Speaker Biography

Shaykh (Zak) Sheikh

Muslim Chaplain at the University of Alberta

Shaykh Zak Sheikh, BSc, was born on Sept. 11, 1949 -- a date that

proved ominous 52 years later -- to a Muslim family in Egypt, a

majority Sunni Muslim society. At first he took his religion for

granted, but three Middle-East wars (1956, 1967 and 1973) and trips

to Europe in 1969 and 1970 changed that.

At 28 years old, he had acquired a BSc in horticulture from Cairo

University and worked as a marketing director for a major Egyptian

company that exported perishables to Europe and cosmetics to Russia.

Life was good, but Zak felt empty in the knowledge department.

On Sept. 11, 1978, Zak left Egypt. After a solo, one-night soul-

searching birthday celebration in London, three weeks visiting with

friends in New York City, a month with relatives in Detroit, and a

few days in Toronto, Zak landed as a new immigrant in Edmonton.

With a totally new attitude towards life, Zak started his second life

in Canada mainly looking for an answer to the question that nagged

him throughout his previous life: what happens to us after we die?

Having survived in different jobs in sales and otherwise, including a

five-year stint as a product manager for an aerosol manufacturer back

in Egypt in the 1990s, and looking deeply into Islam while comparing

it to most other religions large and small, Zak thinks he has finally

found some answers.

For the past three years, Zak has been the Muslim chaplain at the

University of Alberta. Zak Sheikh considers himself a Shaykh -- an

elder or spiritual counselor.

Upcoming for 2006/2007

Our feature speaker is:

A. Anne McLellan, P.C. , LL.M. , LL.B. , B.A. (born August 31, 1950, in Hants County, Nova Scotia) was the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada under Paul Martin.

She will be talking on Canadian Security.

Biography of Speaker from Wikipedia with some corrections.

Early life

Anne McLellan earned bachelor degrees in Arts and Law from Halifax's Dalhousie University. She then earned a Master of Laws from King's College London in the UK.

She became a professor of law, first at the University of New Brunswick and then, beginning in 1980, at the University of Alberta where she served at various times as associate dean and dean. She has also served on the board of directors of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.

Political career

Her first foray into politics was as the Liberal candidate for the riding of Edmonton Northwest in the 1993 general election, when she won her seat by 12 votes. She is known as "Landslide Annie" for her frequent, narrow electoral victories.

She quickly became a rising star in the Liberal Party, being one of 4 Liberals elected in Alberta, namely in the City of Edmonton, and was named to cabinet as Minister of Natural Resources. McLellan has the prenomial "the Honourable" and the postnomial "PC" for life by virture of being made a member of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada on November 4, 1993.

She managed to get re-elected in the new riding of Edmonton West in 1997 and 2000 despite Liberal unpopularity in Alberta being one of 2 Liberals from Alberta. She moved around the cabinet table, serving as Minister of Justice from 1997 to 2002 and Minister of Health from 2002 to 2003. As Justice Minister, she was responsible for implementing new anti-terror and security laws following the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, and administered the implementation of the Canadian gun registry, a Liberal program criticized for its expense and inefficiency.

Prominence in Martin cabinet

On being sworn-in as Prime Minister on December 12, 2003, Paul Martin showed renewed confidence in McLellan and sent a message to the west about his plans to reduce western alienation by naming her his Deputy Prime Minister. McLellan was also named minister for the newly created Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.

During the 2004 Canadian federal election, she was re-elected by 721 votes, or just over 1% of the vote, defeating Laurie Hawn of the Conservative Party of Canada in the riding of Edmonton Centre.

However, in the 2006 Canadian federal election on 23 January 2006, McLellan was defeated by Laurie Hawn, taking 38.36% to Hawn's 45.01% of the popular vote in Edmonton Centre.

President of U of Alberta March Speaker

Professor Indira V. Samarasekera will be talking at the Canadian Club of Edmonton on 15 March 2005 at noon at the Chateau Lacombe on her vision forthe University of Alberta.

Indira V. Samarasekera

President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Alberta

By the time she reached her early teens, Indira Vasanti Samarasekera knew her calling was engineering. In 1974, as a newly graduated mechanical engineer, she joined the petroleum industry in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), the country of her birth and formative education. With an imposing natural talent for mathematics and physics, the young engineer was quickly drawn back to university - this time in the USA, where she earned a master's degree, as a Hayes Fulbright Scholar, from the University of California.

She moved to Vancouver in 1977 to pursue doctoral studies in metallurgical engineering at the University of British Columbia. She remained at UBC for close to three decades, where she built a world-wide research reputation in the Department of Materials Engineering.

Dr. Samarasekera's specialty was the development and use of mathematical models to predict defect formation during continuous casting and mechanical properties of hot-rolled steel. In continuous casting her work led to the development of designs for moulds for the elimination of defects, which have been implemented in steel plants world-wide. She has consulted extensively for the global steel industry.

Her last position at UBC was in the role of Vice President Research, where she served for five years. In that capacity, her natural gifts as a leader were evident. She relentlessly drove her university's research agenda and advocated for greater provincial and national funding across disciplines. She enhanced the participation of undergraduate students in research, stressed the integral role of graduate students in the modern research university, and advocated for expanded support for knowledge and technology transfer.

Dr. Samarasekera is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIMM). She is a recipient of the E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship, the British Columbia Science Council New Frontiers in Research Award, the Dofasco Award, and the UBC Killam Research Prize.

Dr. Samarasekera served on the boards of Discovery Parks Inc., Genome BC, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, the Provincial Health Services Authority, the Canadian Microelectronics Corporation, the Stem Cell Network, and the Canadian Genetics Diseases Network. She was a member of Industry Canada's panel on Commercialization, on the Council of the National Research Council (NRC), and on numerous committees for NSERC. She is currently on a visiting committee for MIT.

Her international experience has greatly informed her view of the world, and her deep connection with Sri Lanka shaped her humanitarian consciousness. She is passionate about eradicating intolerance, as she is passionate about the value of education as a means of achieving prosperity and wellbeing, both in Canada and around the world.

Dr. Samarasekera is devoted to her family, including her children, Dinesh and Anjalika, both students in Canada, and her parents. Dr. and Mrs. A.C. Arulpragasam retired and living in Sri Lanka.
