DEUTERONOMY 17

1 (Dt 15:21; 23:18) You must not sacrifice to the Lord your God any bull

or sheep that has a blemish or any defect, for that is detestable

which the Lord your God gives you, man or woman, who has acted

wickedly in the sight of the Lord your God, by transgressing His covenant,

DEUTERONOMY 18



Provision for Priests and Levites

2 They will have no inheritance among their brothers.

The Lord is their inheritance, just as He has said to them.

3 (Lev 7:30-34) This shall be the priest's due from the people,

from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be an ox or sheep:

they shall give to the priest the shoulder, the two cheeks,

and the stomach.

4 (Ex 22:29; 23:19) You must give him the first fruit of your grain,

of your wine, and of your oil, and the first of the fleece of your

sheep also.

5 (Dt 10:8; 17:12) For the Lord your God has chosen him out of all

your tribes to stand to minister in the name of the Lord, him

12 (Lev 18:24; Dt 9:4) For all that do these things are an abomination

to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God

will drive them out from before you.

thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.

[10] There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his

14 For these nations, which you shall possess, listened to soothsayers

and to diviners, but as for you, the Lord your God has not permitted

you to do so.

from the midst of you, of your brothers, like me. You must listen to him.

whose land the Lord your God is giving you, and you dispossess them,

and dwell in their cities, and in their houses,

2 (Ex 21:13) you shall set apart three cities for yourselves in the midst

of your land, which the Lord your God is giving you to possess.

3 You shall prepare a roadway for yourself, and divide the territory

of your land into three parts, which the Lord your God is giving you

to inherit, so that every manslayer may flee there.

4 (Nu 35:15-24; Dt 4:42) This is the word concerning the manslayer

who will flee there, so that he may live: Whoever kills his neighbor

unintentionally, whom he did not hate previously,

5like when a man goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood,

then he may flee to one of those cities, and live.

Timothy Accompanies Paul and Silas



1 (Ac 14:6; 17:14) Then he came to Derbe and then to Lystra.

A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewess who believed,

but his father was a Greek.

2 He was well spoken of by the brothers who were at Lystra and Iconium.

3 (Gal 2:3) Paul wanted him to travel with him. So he took him

and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places,

for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

4 (Ac 15:28-29; 15:2) As they went through the cities,

they delivered to them the decrees to observe,

that were set forth by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem.

5 (Ac 9:31; 2:47) So the churches were strengthened in the faith,

and increased in number daily.

Paul's Vision of the Macedonian



6 (Ac 18:23; 1Pe 1:1; Gal 1:2) They went through the region of Phryg­ia

and Galatia and were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.

7 (Ro 8:9; Gal 4:6) When they came near Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia,

but the Spirit did not allow them.

8 (2Co 2:12; 2Ti 4:13) So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.

9 (Ac 18:5; 19:21) During the night a vision appeared to Paul:

A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying,

"Come over to Macedonia and help us."

10 After he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go into Macedonia,

concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.



[6] Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and

were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,

[7] After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the

Spirit suffered them not.

[8] And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.

[9] And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of

Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

[10] And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavored to go into

Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the

gospel unto them.



In 1701, the Church of England founded the Society for the Propagation

of the Gospel in order to send missionaries around the globe. The motto they

chose was transiens adiuva nos-Latin for "Come over and help us!" This has

been the call on gospel ambassadors since the first century, as followers

of Jesus take the message of His love and forgiveness to a world

in desperate need of it.



The phrase "come over and help us" comes from the "Macedonian call" described

in Acts 16. Paul and his team had arrived at Troas on the west coast of Asia

Minor (modern-day Turkey, v. 8-). There, "Paul had a vision of a man of

Macedonia standing and begging him, 'Come over to Macedonia and help us'"

(v. 9). Having received the vision, Paul and his companions "got ready

at once to leave for Macedonia" (v. 10). They understood the vital importance

of the call.



Not everyone is called to cross the seas, but we can support those who do with

our prayers and finances. And all of us can tell someone, whether across the

room, the street, or the community, about the good news of Jesus. Let's pray

that our good God will enable us to cross over and give people the greatest

help of all-the opportunity for forgiveness in Jesus' name.

Rom 8:1-2



Life in the Spirit



1 (1Co 1:30; 2Co 5:17) There is therefore now no condemnation

for those who are in Christ Jesus,

who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

2 (1Co 15:45; Ro 6:18; Jn 8:32) For the law of the Spirit of life

in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death.



The Spirit of God Within You

1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus,

who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free

from the law of sin and death.



In the classic movie, I want to live! actress Susan Hayward

plays a woman convicted of murder and sentenced to be executed.

The suspense builds; the execution is delayed as the officials

wait for a word of pardon. Finally, the woman in executed;

the call comes, and the pardon has been granted, but it is too late.

When no pardon is granted, condemnation leads to death. Our sin

marks us as "guilty" before God, and we deserve the wages of sin,

which is death. But in Jesus Christ, the pardon does come - and

it comes in time. Our sin deserves condemnation by God, and yet

he forgives us because Christ paid the penalty for us,

But we face other kinds of condemnation as well - self-condemnation,

that internal accusation that we still, somehow, must pay the price

of our own sin. Others often condemn us as well, offering much less

forgiveness and mercy than God does. And the Enemy of our souls condemns

us, trying to convince us that we don't, after all, have real freedom

from sin.

Yet Paul tells us in Romans 8, "There is therefore now no condemnation

for those who are in Christ Jesus". God has forgiven us freely; he has

granted his pardon. And in light of his forgiveness, how can we live

under the condemnation of others - or even of ourselves?

We are free, Paul says - free from the "law of sin and death,"

free to live in the liberty of the Spirit. The stay of execution

has come: the pardon has been granted. Never again can we tried

for the same crimes: never again must we live under the burden

of condemnation.



Application



a) Have I ever lived under the burden of condemnation from myself

or others? Why?



b) How can Romans 8:1-2 help me live in freedom of such condemnation?

Saskatoon has seen quick growth in its Muslim population over the past

5 years, which maybe as high as 5000 today. Islamic leaders have

focused specifically on this city , having twice already sent cohorts

of about 70 families to start mosques. There are now 7 Islamic centres

of worship and an ISlamic madrassah (school) located right next to a

Christian school.

Of particular concern recently is the number of young adults who grew up

in evangelical churches and converted to Islam. Most of these are young

women who were wooed by Muslim man and became emotionally bonded.

Both prior to and after marrying, these women are known to convert to ISlam.



Agree in prayer with us for:

- entire congregations and individual believers to catch God's heart

and passion for reaching Muslims in Saskatoon and the other growing

Muslim population centres of Saskatchewan.

- for the eyes and understanding of Canadian youth to be opened to the

spiritual reality of Islam, and not deceived nor manipulated into

converting to a religion which cannot offer assurance of salvation.

- for the few workers among Muslims now engaged there, and for many more

to be raised up into effective witness.

- for prayer and training events that are starting in Saskatoon

to spread and grow to other cities.

Revelation 3:20



20 Listen! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice

and opens the door, I will come in and dine with him, and he with Me.



[20] Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and

open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.



Wan is an elder in a fishing village in West Sumatra, the Indonesian homeland

of the Minangkabau people. He won $150,000 in a slogan-writing competition

but died before claiming the prize. His fellow villagers plotted to hide his

death so that the prize money could still be claimed for the communal good.



Interestingly, their scheme almost perfectly mimics the plot of a recent

Indonesian comedy, 'Onde Mande!' (Oh No!). The dialogue of the film is mostly

in the local language, so that the Minangkabau director's father

(who comes from a village just like the one portrayed in the film)

can enjoy it more fully. The film showcases Minangkabau pride in their local

language and ancestral village, their values of mutual cooperation and shrewdness,

and their Muslim identity.

The Minangkabau face many challenges in life, such as tensions between their

traditional creative problem-solving skills and the rules regulating Muslim

society. Other tensions between Islam and Minangkabau culture exist, as well.

For example, in the Mingangkabau culture, only women inherit ancestral land,

which stands in stark contrast to more paternalistic Islamic values.



As cultural values, traditions and religious complexities intersect, pray

that God would reveal various aspects of His character

and lead many Mingangkabau to Himself.



How to Pray



May God give the Minangkabau people grace to see that Jesus

is the exact image of the invisible God.



The Bible is available in the Minangkabau language, but a major revision

is needed for it to be useful. Ask God to raise up followers of Jesus who

will engage with the Minangkabau people in the Minangkabau language

and in culturally appropriate ways.



Ask God to call Minangkabau people to become followers of Jesus.

And that they will then influence others to come to Him.



My paternal side is of Muslim heritage and will offer this section to further

call for Muslim converts to Christian and any other converts to Christianity

(Hindus, Jews, aboriginals Canadian, ...) .
