The Queen of Sheba
2Ch 9:1-12
1 (Mt 12:42; Lk 11:31; Ge 10:7) Now when the queen of Sheba
heard of Solomon's fame connected to the name of the Lord,
she came to test him with hard questions.
2 She came to Jerusalem with a very great retinue,
with camels bearing spices, and very much gold, and precious stones;
and when she came to Solomon, she told him all that was on her mind.
3 Solomon answered all her questions; there was not anything
too difficult for the king which he could not answer.
4 When the queen of Sheba observed Solomon's wisdom and the house he had built
5 (1Ch 26:16) and the meat of his table and the sitting of his servants
and the attendance of his ministers and their clothing and his cupbearers
and his entryway by which he went up to the house of the Lord,
it took her breath away.
6 She said to the king, "What I heard in my own land about your acts
and your wisdom was true!
7 I did not believe it until I came and saw it with my own eyes!
In fact, I was not even told half. Your wisdom and prosperity
are greater than the stories I heard!
8 (Pr 8:34) Happy are your men, and happy are these your servants
who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom!
9 (2Sa 8:15; 1Ki 5:7) Blessed be the Lord your God, who delighted in you
and set you on the throne of Israel, because the Lord loved Israel forever;
therefore He made you king in order to execute judgment and justice."
10 (1Ki 10:2) She gave the king a hundred and twenty talents
[About 41/2 tons, or 4 metric tons.] of gold and a great amount of spices
and precious stones. No one gave as many spices as the queen of Sheba
gave to King Solomon.
11 (1Ki 9:27-28) The ships of Hiram, which brought gold from Ophir,
also brought from Ophir a large quantity of almug wood and precious stones.
12 The king made pillars for the house of the Lord out of the almug trees
and harps also and psalteries for singers for the king's house.
Never before had such almug wood been brought,
nor has any such been seen to this day.
13 King Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all she desired,
no matter what she asked for, in addition to what Solomon gave her
from his royal bounty. So she turned and went to her own country,
she and her servants.

The Queen of Sheba
1 And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning

bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when she was
come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.

4 And when the queen of Sheba had seen all Solomon's wisdom,
and the house that he had built,
5 and the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the
attendance of his ministers, and their apparel, and his cupbearers, and his
ascent by which he went up unto the house of the LORD;
there was no more spirit
in her.
6 And she said to the king, It was a true report that I heard in mine own land
of thy acts and of thy wisdom.
7 Howbeit I believed not the words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it:
and, behold, the half was not told me: thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth
the fame which I heard.
8 Happy are thy men, happy are these thy servants, which stand continually
before thee, and that hear thy wisdom.
9 Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee, to set thee on the
throne of Israel: because the LORD loved Israel for ever, therefore made he
thee king, to do judgment and justice.
10 And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices
very great store, and precious stones: there came no more such abundance of
spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.
11 And the navy also of Hiram, that brought gold from Ophir, brought in from
Ophir great plenty of almug trees, and precious stones.
12 And the king made of the almug trees pillars for the house of the LORD,
and for the king's house, harps also and psalteries for singers:
there came no such almug trees, nor were seen unto this day.
13 And king Solomon gave unto the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever
she asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she
turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.

The Queen of Sheba Visits
1Ki 10:1-13
1 (Mt 12:42; Lk 11:31) The queen of Sheba heard a report of Solomon,
and she came to Jerusalem with a very impressive retinue-with camels
carrying spices, an abundance of gold, and precious stones-to test
Solomon with riddles. When she came to Solomon she shared with him
everything that was on her heart.
2 Solomon declared to her everything that she asked, and there was not
any matter concealed from Solomon that he did not declare to her.
3 When the queen of Sheba had observed the wisdom of Solomon,
the house that he had built, 4the food on his table, the seating
of his officials, and the attendance of his servants, and their clothing,
his valets, and their clothing, and his burnt offerings that he offered
at the house of the Lord, there was no more spirit left in her.
5 Then she said to the king, "True was the report that I heard
in my land concerning your words and wisdom.
6 But I did not believe their reports until I came and my eyes saw;
and indeed, half the greatness of your wisdom was not declared to me.
You have exceeded the report that I heard.
7 How happy your men must be! How happy these servants,
those who are continually before you listening to your wisdom.
8 (2Ch 2:11; Dt 7:8) May the Lord your God be blessed, who has delighted
in you, to set you as king on the throne of the Lord your God.
Your God has loved Israel to establish them continually
and has set you as king over them to perform justice and righteousness."
9 Then she gave the king one hundred and twenty talents
[About 41/2 tons or 4 metric tons.[ of gold and a great abundance
of spices and precious stones. And there were no spices like those
that the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.
10 [2Ch 8:18; 1Ki 10:11] Moreover, the servants of Hiram and Solomon
who brought gold from Ophir also brought algum wood and precious stones.
11 (1Ki 10:12) And the king used the algum wood for steps for the house
of the Lord and the palace of the king, even for lyres and harps
for the singers. And there had not been anything seen
like these in the land of Judah.
12 (1Ki 10:13) And King Solomon gave everything to the queen of Sheba
in which she had pleasure, even what she asked for in addition to what
she brought to the king. Then she turned and left for her own land with
her servants.

8 Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee to set thee on his
throne, to be king for the LORD thy God: because thy God loved Israel,
to establish them for ever, therefore made he thee king over them,
to do judgment and justice.
9 And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices
great abundance, and precious stones: neither was there any such spice
as the queen of Sheba gave king Solomon.
10 And the servants also of Huram, and the servants of Solomon,
which brought gold from Ophir, brought algum trees and precious stones.
11 And the king made of the algum trees terraces to the house of the LORD,
and to the king's palace, and harps and psalteries for singers: and there
were none such seen before in the land of Judah.
12 And king Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever
she asked, beside that which she had brought unto the king. So she turned,
and went away to her own land, she and her servants.

Solomon's Wealth
2 Ch 1:14-17; 9:13-28
14 (1Ki 9:28) Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon
in one year was six hundred and sixty-six talents
[About 25 tons, or 23 metric tons.] of gold.
15 In addition, he collected from the merchantmen and the traffic
of the spice merchants and from all the kings of Arabia
and the governors of the country.
16 (1Ki 14:26-28; 2Ch 12:9-10) King Solomon made two hundred
large shields of beaten gold made of six hundred shekels
[About 15 pounds, or 6.9 kilograms; and in v. 29.] of gold each.
17 (1Ki 7:2) He made three hundred shields of beaten gold with three pounds
[About 3 3/4 pounds, or 1.7 kilograms,]
or if double minas,
[about 7 1/2 pounds, or 3.5 kilograms.] of gold in each shield.
And the king put them in the House of the Forest of Lebanon.
18 (1Ki 10:22; Ps 45:8) The king also made a great throne of ivory
and overlaid it with the best gold.
19 The throne had six steps, and the back of the throne was round,
and there were armrests on either side of the seat with two lions
standing beside the armrests.
20 Twelve lions stood on the sides of the six steps,
and there was no other like it in any kingdom.
21 (1Ki 10:17) All of King Solomon's drinking cups were made of gold,
and all the cups of the House of the Forest of Lebanon were made of pure gold.
None were made of silver, for it was not considered valuable
in the days of Solomon.
22 (1Ki 22:48; Ge 10:4) For the king had ships at sea at Tarshish
with the ships of Hiram. Every three years the ships of Tarshish
came bringing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.
23 (1Ki 3:12-13) So King Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth in terms
of riches and wisdom.
24 (1Ki 3:9; 3:12) All the earth came to Solomon to hear his wisdom,
which God had put in his heart. 25Everyone brought an annual tribute
in the form of presents, silver and gold cups, garments, armor, spices,
horses, and mules.
26 (2Ch 9:25; 1Ki 4:26; Dt 17:16) Solomon gathered together chariots
and horsemen. He had one thousand four hundred chariots
and twelve thousand horsemen whom he stationed in the cities for chariots
and with the king at Jerusalem.
27 The king made silver to be in Jerusalem as plentiful as stones,
and he made cedars to be as plentiful as sycamore trees in the valley.
28 (Dt 17:16; 2Ch 9:28) Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt along
with linen yarn. The king's merchants received the linen yarn at a price.
29 He brought chariots from Egypt at a price of six hundred shekels of silver
and a horse for a hundred and fifty.
[About 3 3/4 pounds, or 1.7 kilograms.]
And he exported them to all the kings of the Hittites
and the kings of Aram, by their means.
Wealth and Splendour
14 Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred
threescore and six talents of gold,
15 beside that he had of the merchantmen, and of the traffick of the spice
merchants, and of all the kings of Arabia,
and of the governors of the country.
16 And king Solomon made two hundred targets of beaten gold:
six hundred shekels of gold went to one target.
17 And he made three hundred shields of beaten gold; three pound of gold
went to one shield: and the king put them in the house of the
forest of Lebanon.
18 Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it
with the best gold.
19 The throne had six steps, and the top of the throne was round behind:
and there were stays on either side on the place of the seat,
and two lions stood beside the stays.
20 And twelve lions stood there on the one side and on the other upon
the six steps: there was not the like made in any kingdom.
21 And all king Solomon's drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels
of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold; none were of silver:
it was nothing accounted of in the days of Solomon.
22 For the king had at sea a navy of Tharshish with the navy of Hiram: once
in three years came the navy of Tharshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory,
and apes, and peacocks.
23 So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches
and for wisdom.
24 And all the earth sought to Solomon, to hear his wisdom,
which God had put in his heart.
25 And they brought every man his present, vessels of silver, and vessels
of gold, and garments, and armour, and spices, horses, and mules,
a rate year by year.
26 And Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand
and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, whom he bestowed in
the cities for chariots, and with the king at Jerusalem.
27 And the king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made
he to be as the sycomore trees that are in the vale, for abundance.
28 And Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt, and linen yarn: the king's
me chants received the linen yarn at a price.
29 And a chariot came up and went out of Egypt for six hundred shekels
of silver, and an horse for an hundred and fifty: and so for all the kings
of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria,
did they bring them out by their means.

The Splendor of Solomon
1Ki 10:14-29; 2Ch 1:14-17
13 The weight of gold that came to Solomon every year was 660 talents
[About 25 tons, or 23 metric tons.] of gold.
14 In addition to what the explorers and merchants brought in,
all the kings of Arabia and governors of the land brought in gold
and silver to Solomon.
15 King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold,
and six hundred gold pieces [About 15 pounds, or 6.9 kilograms.]
were used for each large shield.
16 (1Ki 7:2) And he made three hundred shields of hammered gold;
three hundred gold pieces [About 7 1/2 pounds, or 3.5 kilograms.]
were used for each shield. And the king put them in the House
of the Forest of Lebanon.
17 And the king made a great throne of ivory,
and he covered it with fine gold.
18 And there were six steps and a gold footstool attached to the throne,
and on each side at the place of the seat were armrests with two lions
standing beside the armrests.
19 So twelve lions stood there on the six steps, one on each side,
and there was nothing like this in any kingdom.
20 Even all the drinking vessels of King Solomon were gold,
and all the vessels in the House of the Forest of Lebanon were fine gold.
And silver was not thought to be valuable in the days of Solomon.
21 The ships of Solomon went to Tarshish with the servants of Hiram.
Once every three years the ships of Tarshish returned carrying gold,
silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.
22 (2Ch 1:12) So King Solomon was greater than all the kings of the earth
in wealth and wisdom.
23 (1Ki 4:34) All the kings of the earth sought out an audience
before Solomon to hear his wisdom that God gave to his mind.
24 Every year each man brought his own tribute, vessels of silver and gold,
garments, myrrh, spices, horses, and mules.
25 (1Ki 4:26; 10:26; 2Ch 1:14) Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses
and chariots and twelve thousand horses, and he put them in designated cities
and with him in Jerusalem.
26 (Ge 15:18; 1Ki 4:21) He ruled over all the kings from the River
[Euphrates River.] to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt.
27 (2Ch 1:15-17) So the king made silver in Jerusalem as abundant as stones
and cedar as plentiful as sycamore trees in the lowlands of the Shephelah.
28 (2Ch 1:16) The horses of Solomon were imported from Egypt
and from all other lands.
Solomon's Wealth

His Wisdom
22 And king Solomon passed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom.
23 And all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon,
to hear his wisdom, that God had put in his heart.
24 And they brought every man his present, vessels of silver, and vessels
of gold, and raiment, harness, and spices, horses, and mules,
a rate year by year.
25 And Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots,
and twelve thousand horsemen; whom he bestowed in the chariot cities,
and with the king at Jerusalem.
26 And he reigned over all the kings from the river even unto the land
of the Philistines, and to the border of Egypt.
27 And the king made silver in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar trees made
he as the sycomore trees that are in the low plains in abundance.
28 And they brought unto Solomon horses out of Egypt, and out of all lands.
29 Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, first and last, are they not written
in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the prophecy of Ahijah
the Shilonite, and in the visions of Iddo the seer against Jeroboam
the son of Nebat?
30 And Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years.
31 And Solomon slept with his fathers, and he was buried in the city
of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.
1 Kings 11
Solomon's Apostasy
1 (Dt 17:17; Ne 13:23-27) But King Solomon loved many foreign women
in addition to the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites,
Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites,
2 (Ex 34:16; 23:32-33) from the nations which the Lord warned the children
of Israel about, saying, "You shall not go in to them, nor shall they come
in to you, for they will surely turn your heart away toward their gods."
Solomon clung to these in love.
3 (2Sa 5:13-16) He had seven hundred wives who were princesses
and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart away.
4 (1Ki 9:4; 8:61) For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away
after other gods, and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God
as the heart of David his father had been.
5 (Jdg 2:13; 1Ki 11:7) For Solomon went after Ashtoreth, the goddess
of the Sidonians, and after Molek, the abomination of the Ammonites.
6 Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not fully
follow the Lord as his father David had done.
7 (Nu 21:29; Jdg 11:24) Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh,
the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is close to Jerusalem,
and for Molek, the abomination of the children of Ammon.
8 He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense
and sacrificed to their gods.
9 (1Ki 3:5; 9:2) The Lord was angry with Solomon
because he turned his heart away from the Lord God of Israel,
who had appeared to him twice,
10 and had warned him about this, that he should not follow other gods,
but he was disobedient to the Lord's command.
11 (1Ki 11:31; 12:15-16) Therefore the Lord said to Solomon,
"Since you have done this and have not kept My covenant and statutes,
which I commanded you, I will surely take the kingdom from you
and give it to your servant.
12 I will not do this in your lifetime for your father David's sake,
but I will tear it out of the hand of your son.
13 (1Ki 12:20; Dt 12:11) However, I will not take the whole kingdom away,
but will preserve one tribe for your son for David My servant's sake
and for the sake of Jerusalem which I chose."
Solomon's Adversaries
14 The Lord stirred up an adversary against Solomon, Hadad the Edomite.
He was a prince of Edom.
15 (2Sa 8:14; Dt 20:13) For when David was in Edom, and Joab the commander
of the army had gone to bury the slain, he had killed every male in Edom
16 (for six months Joab stayed there with his men
until he had killed every male in Edom).
17 But Hadad fled to Egypt, he and some Edomites who served his father,
Hadad still being a small child.
18 (Nu 10:12; Dt 1:1) They set out from Midian and went to Paran,
and they gathered men from Paran and then arrived in Egypt
and presented him before Pharaoh king of Egypt,
who gave him a house and provisions and land.
19 Pharaoh had great affection for Hadad, so much so that he gave
him his sister-in-law, the sister of Tahpenes the queen, as a wife.
20 Tahpenes' sister gave birth to his son, Genubath, whom Tahpenes
weaned in Pharaoh's house. Genubath lived in Pharaoh's house
among the sons of Pharaoh.
21 (1Ki 2:10) When Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers
and that Joab, the commander of the army, was dead, he said to Pharaoh,
"Allow me to depart and go to my own country."
22 Then Pharaoh said to him, "But what have you lacked with me that
you want to go to your own country?"
And he answered, "Nothing, however let me go anyway."
23 (2Sa 8:3; 1Ki 11:14) God stirred up another adversary against him,
Rezon the son of Eliada, who fled from his lord Hadadezer, king of Zobah.
24 (2Sa 10:8; 10:18) He gathered a group of men and became leader over
a band when David killed the men of Zobah, and they fled to Damascus
and lived and reigned there.
25 He was an enemy of Israel all the days of Solomon in addition
to the troubles caused by Hadad, and he hated Israel and reigned over Aram.
Jeroboam's Rebellion
26 (1Ki 12:2; 2Ch 13:6) Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah,
who was Solomon's servant and whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman,
even he lifted up his hand against the king.
27 (1Ki 9:24; 9:15) This is what led to his rebellion against the king.
Solomon built Millo and repaired the wall of the City of David his father.
28 (Pr 22:29) Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor, and when Solomon
saw that the young man was industrious, he made him ruler over all the labor
force of the house of Joseph.
29 (1Ki 12:15; 14:2) At that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem,
the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him along the way, and he had dressed
himself in a new garment, and the two of them were alone in the field.
30 (1Sa 15:27-28) Ahijah took off the new garment that he wore
and tore it into twelve pieces,
31 (1Ki 11:11-12) and he said to Jeroboam: Take ten pieces,
for thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,
"See, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon
and will give ten tribes to you
32 (1Ki 11:13) (but he shall have one tribe for My servant David's sake
and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen out of all
the tribes of Israel),
33 because they have forsaken Me and have worshipped
Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites,
and Molek the god of the children of Ammon and have not walked
in My ways and have not done that which is right in My eyes,
to keep My statutes and judgments, as his father David had done.
34 "However, I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand,
but I will make him prince all the days of his life
for David My servant's sake, whom I chose, because he kept
My commandments and My statutes.
35 But I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand
and will give ten tribes to you.
36 (1Ki 11:13; 15:4) To his son will I give one tribe,
so that My servant David will always have a light
before Me in Jerusalem, the city in which I have chosen to put My name.
37 (2Sa 3:21) I will take you, and you shall reign according to all
that your soul desires and shall be king over Israel.
38 (Jos 1:5; 2Sa 7:11) It shall be, if you will listen to all that I command
you and will walk in My ways and do what is right in My sight to keep
My statutes and My commandments, as David My servant did,
I will be with you and build you a sure house, as I built for David,
and will give Israel to you.
39 I will thus afflict the seed of David, but not forever."
40 (2Ch 12:2-9) Solomon therefore sought to kill Jeroboam.
And Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt to Shishak, king of Egypt,
and he stayed in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
The Death of Solomon
2Ch 9:29-31
41 (2Ch 9:29-31) The rest of the acts of Solomon and all that he did
and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?
42 And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel
was forty years.
43 (1Ki 2:10; 2Ki 21:18) Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried
in the City of David his father, and his son Rehoboam reigned after him.
1 Kings 11
His Fall
1 But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter
of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians,
and Hittites;
2 of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel,
Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely
they will turn away your heart after their gods:
Solomon clave unto these in love.
3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines:
and his wives turned away his heart.
4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away
his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD
his God, as was the heart of David his father.
5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after

14 And the LORD stirred up an adversary unto Solomon, Hadad the Edomite: he
was of the king's seed in Edom.
15 For it came to pass, when David was in Edom, and Joab the captain
of the host was gone up to bury the slain, after he had smitten every
male in Edom;
16( for six months did Joab remain there with all Israel, until he had cut
off every male in Edom:)
17 that Hadad fled, he and certain Edomites of his father's servants
with him, to go into Egypt; Hadad being yet a little child.
18 And they arose out of Midian, and came to Paran: and they took men with
them out of Paran, and they came to Egypt, unto Pharaoh king of Egypt; which
gave him an house, and appointed him victuals, and gave him land.
19 And Hadad found great favour in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him
to wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen.

23 And God stirred him up another adversary, Rezon the son of Eliadah, which
fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah:
24 and he gathered men unto him, and became captain over a band, when David
slew them of Zobah: and they went to Damascus, and dwelt therein,
and reigned in Damascus.
25 And he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, beside
the mischief that Hadad did: and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.
Jeroboam's Revolt
26 And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon's servant,
whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand
against the king.
27 And this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon
built Millo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father.
28 And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour: and Solomon seeing
the young man that he was industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge
of the house of Joseph.
29 And it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that
the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had clad himself
with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field:
30 and Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve
pieces:
31 and he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith the LORD,
the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon,
and will give ten tribes to thee:
32 (but he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake, and for
Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of
Israel: )
33 because that they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth
the goddess of the Zidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom
the god of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in my ways, to do
that which is right in mine eyes, and to keep my statutes and my judgments,
as did David his father.
34 Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make

The summer after my sophomore year of college, a classmate died unexpectedly.
I'd seen him just a few days prior and he looked fine. My classmates and I
were young and in what we thought was the prime of our lives, having just
become sisters and brothers after pledging our respective sorority and
fraternity.
But what I remember most about my classmate's death was witnessing my
fraternity friends live out what the apostle James calls “Pure
religion” (James 1:27). The men in the fraternity became like brothers to the
sister of the deceased. They attended her wedding and traveled to her baby
shower years after her brother's death. One even gifted her a cell phone
to contact him whenever she needed to call.
True religion, according to James, is "To visit the fatherless and widows
in their affliction" (v. 27). While my friend's sister wasn't an orphan in the
literal sense, she no longer had her brother. Her new "brothers" filled in
the gap.
And that's what all of us who want to practice true and pure life in Jesus
can do-"be ye doers of the word" (v. 22), including caring for those in
need (2:14-17). Our faith in Him prompts us to look after the vulnerable as we keep
ourselves from the negative influences of the world as He helps us. After all,
it's the true religion God accepts.

Week 4 - The Blessings of Grace Day 3 - From Darkness to Light
Col 1:13-14
13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and has transferred us
into the kingdom of His dear Son,
14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
Most of us have no real concept of darkness. We live in a world illuminated
not only by sun, moon and start, bit by streetlights and electric lamps and,
when the power goes off, flashlights and candles. We resist the darkness
For the sighted, being in absolute darkness is a frightening experience.
The dark blots out everything; we can see nothing, not even our own bodies,
and we may become disoriented. The dark seems to press in upon us,
with an almost physical weight that oppresses.
Spiritual darkness is like that. Spiritual darkness,
the absence of light in Christ, is oppressive, weighing us down,
distorting our perceptions of realty.
We cannot judge clearly, for we cannot see at all.
Yet God breaks into our darkness, bringing his light - Jesus Christ,
The Light of the World. When the awareness of Christ invades our lives,
our eyes are opened and we can see for the first time. We see our sin,
God's grace, and the Way he has provided for escape from the dark.
And as we continue to walk in his light, we see even more - the need
for changes in our lives, and God's power to work those changes.
Discernment and wisdom come through his light,
and we understand spiritual truths we could never see before.
Paul says that God has 'rescued' us from darkness and brought us
into the light. We cannot, on our own, accomplish this rescue,
but god through Christ's sacrifice brings it about in us.
He is the light who illuminates our darkness.
Application
a) Many different kinds of spiritual darkness invade our lives
and keep us blind to the truth - sin, lack of understanding,
resistance to the Holy Spirit. What kinds of spiritual darkness
have I experienced?
b) What changes took place in me when I first 'came into the light'?
c) What spiritual truths can I see now that I could not see
when I lived in darkness?

There is a growing Muslim population in Quebec City and a smattering
of Muslims scattered around the rest of the province, yet the vast majority
of Muslims live in the greater Montreal area. n fact, 23% of Canada's Muslim
population live in Quebec. Why is that? It is largely because Francophone
African Muslims are attracted to La Belle Provence.
And here's an interesting, perhaps even shocking fact: There are more
Muslims in Montreal than there are evangelical Christians.
This is one demographic factor creates a challenging environment for churches
and believers here: The size of the available 'workforce' is small
by comparison to begin with. Believers are already is a host culture that
is often either indifferent to religion or resistant to it. And now
this 'new' religious community of Muslims - many of whom do not visibly
or socially conform to Quebec society - are a growing population. It might br
easy for Christians to feel overwhelm by this cultural double-whammy,
yet God has always worked miracles through the small, the few.
Agree in prayer for :
- The people of Quebec, Muslim or otherwise, to be open to the Gospel
- for Muslims who are encountering believers and responding
-for a new group of Muslim background believers who are meeting
together for worship!
- For pastors and believers to be full of passion, faith and vision for
reaching Muslims in Quebec.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,
"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even on My menservants and maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below:
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.

The Queen of Sheba

The Queen of Sheba
1 And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning
the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with hard questions.
2 And she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that
bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when she was
come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.
3 And Solomon told her all her questions: there was not any thing hid
from the king, which he told her not.
4 And when the queen of Sheba had seen all Solomon's wisdom,
and the house that he had built,
5 and the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the
attendance of his ministers, and their apparel, and his cupbearers, and his
ascent by which he went up unto the house of the LORD;
there was no more spirit
in her.
6 And she said to the king, It was a true report that I heard in mine own land
of thy acts and of thy wisdom.
7 Howbeit I believed not the words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it:
and, behold, the half was not told me: thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth
the fame which I heard.
8 Happy are thy men, happy are these thy servants, which stand continually
before thee, and that hear thy wisdom.
9 Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee, to set thee on the
throne of Israel: because the LORD loved Israel for ever, therefore made he
thee king, to do judgment and justice.
10 And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices
very great store, and precious stones: there came no more such abundance of
spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.
11 And the navy also of Hiram, that brought gold from Ophir, brought in from
Ophir great plenty of almug trees, and precious stones.
12 And the king made of the almug trees pillars for the house of the LORD,
and for the king's house, harps also and psalteries for singers:
there came no such almug trees, nor were seen unto this day.
13 And king Solomon gave unto the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever
she asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she
turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.

The Queen of Sheba Visits
1Ki 10:1-13
1 (Mt 12:42; Lk 11:31) The queen of Sheba heard a report of Solomon,
and she came to Jerusalem with a very impressive retinue-with camels
carrying spices, an abundance of gold, and precious stones-to test
Solomon with riddles. When she came to Solomon she shared with him
everything that was on her heart.
2 Solomon declared to her everything that she asked, and there was not
any matter concealed from Solomon that he did not declare to her.
3 When the queen of Sheba had observed the wisdom of Solomon,
the house that he had built, 4the food on his table, the seating
of his officials, and the attendance of his servants, and their clothing,
his valets, and their clothing, and his burnt offerings that he offered
at the house of the Lord, there was no more spirit left in her.
5 Then she said to the king, "True was the report that I heard
in my land concerning your words and wisdom.
6 But I did not believe their reports until I came and my eyes saw;
and indeed, half the greatness of your wisdom was not declared to me.
You have exceeded the report that I heard.
7 How happy your men must be! How happy these servants,
those who are continually before you listening to your wisdom.
8 (2Ch 2:11; Dt 7:8) May the Lord your God be blessed, who has delighted
in you, to set you as king on the throne of the Lord your God.
Your God has loved Israel to establish them continually
and has set you as king over them to perform justice and righteousness."
9 Then she gave the king one hundred and twenty talents
[About 41/2 tons or 4 metric tons.[ of gold and a great abundance
of spices and precious stones. And there were no spices like those
that the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.
10 [2Ch 8:18; 1Ki 10:11] Moreover, the servants of Hiram and Solomon
who brought gold from Ophir also brought algum wood and precious stones.
11 (1Ki 10:12) And the king used the algum wood for steps for the house
of the Lord and the palace of the king, even for lyres and harps
for the singers. And there had not been anything seen
like these in the land of Judah.
12 (1Ki 10:13) And King Solomon gave everything to the queen of Sheba
in which she had pleasure, even what she asked for in addition to what
she brought to the king. Then she turned and left for her own land with
her servants.

as the queen of Sheba gave king Solomon.
10 And the servants also of Huram, and the servants of Solomon,
which brought gold from Ophir, brought algum trees and precious stones.
11 And the king made of the algum trees terraces to the house of the LORD,
and to the king's palace, and harps and psalteries for singers: and there
were none such seen before in the land of Judah.
12 And king Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever
she asked, beside that which she had brought unto the king. So she turned,
and went away to her own land, she and her servants.

Solomon's Wealth
2 Ch 1:14-17; 9:13-28
14 (1Ki 9:28) Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon
in one year was six hundred and sixty-six talents
[About 25 tons, or 23 metric tons.] of gold.
15 In addition, he collected from the merchantmen and the traffic
of the spice merchants and from all the kings of Arabia
and the governors of the country.
16 (1Ki 14:26-28; 2Ch 12:9-10) King Solomon made two hundred
large shields of beaten gold made of six hundred shekels
[About 15 pounds, or 6.9 kilograms; and in v. 29.] of gold each.
17 (1Ki 7:2) He made three hundred shields of beaten gold with three pounds
[About 3 3/4 pounds, or 1.7 kilograms,]
or if double minas,
[about 7 1/2 pounds, or 3.5 kilograms.] of gold in each shield.
And the king put them in the House of the Forest of Lebanon.
18 (1Ki 10:22; Ps 45:8) The king also made a great throne of ivory
and overlaid it with the best gold.
19 The throne had six steps, and the back of the throne was round,
and there were armrests on either side of the seat with two lions
standing beside the armrests.
20 Twelve lions stood on the sides of the six steps,
and there was no other like it in any kingdom.
21 (1Ki 10:17) All of King Solomon's drinking cups were made of gold,
and all the cups of the House of the Forest of Lebanon were made of pure gold.
None were made of silver, for it was not considered valuable
in the days of Solomon.
22 (1Ki 22:48; Ge 10:4) For the king had ships at sea at Tarshish
with the ships of Hiram. Every three years the ships of Tarshish
came bringing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.
23 (1Ki 3:12-13) So King Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth in terms
of riches and wisdom.
24 (1Ki 3:9; 3:12) All the earth came to Solomon to hear his wisdom,
which God had put in his heart. 25Everyone brought an annual tribute
in the form of presents, silver and gold cups, garments, armor, spices,
horses, and mules.
26 (2Ch 9:25; 1Ki 4:26; Dt 17:16) Solomon gathered together chariots
and horsemen. He had one thousand four hundred chariots
and twelve thousand horsemen whom he stationed in the cities for chariots
and with the king at Jerusalem.
27 The king made silver to be in Jerusalem as plentiful as stones,
and he made cedars to be as plentiful as sycamore trees in the valley.
28 (Dt 17:16; 2Ch 9:28) Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt along
with linen yarn. The king's merchants received the linen yarn at a price.
29 He brought chariots from Egypt at a price of six hundred shekels of silver
and a horse for a hundred and fifty.
[About 3 3/4 pounds, or 1.7 kilograms.]
And he exported them to all the kings of the Hittites
and the kings of Aram, by their means.
Wealth and Splendour
14 Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred
threescore and six talents of gold,
15 beside that he had of the merchantmen, and of the traffick of the spice
merchants, and of all the kings of Arabia,
and of the governors of the country.
16 And king Solomon made two hundred targets of beaten gold:
six hundred shekels of gold went to one target.
17 And he made three hundred shields of beaten gold; three pound of gold
went to one shield: and the king put them in the house of the
forest of Lebanon.
18 Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it
with the best gold.
19 The throne had six steps, and the top of the throne was round behind:
and there were stays on either side on the place of the seat,
and two lions stood beside the stays.
20 And twelve lions stood there on the one side and on the other upon
the six steps: there was not the like made in any kingdom.
21 And all king Solomon's drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels
of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold; none were of silver:
it was nothing accounted of in the days of Solomon.
22 For the king had at sea a navy of Tharshish with the navy of Hiram: once
in three years came the navy of Tharshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory,
and apes, and peacocks.
23 So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches
and for wisdom.
24 And all the earth sought to Solomon, to hear his wisdom,
which God had put in his heart.
25 And they brought every man his present, vessels of silver, and vessels
of gold, and garments, and armour, and spices, horses, and mules,
a rate year by year.
26 And Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand
and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, whom he bestowed in
the cities for chariots, and with the king at Jerusalem.
27 And the king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made
he to be as the sycomore trees that are in the vale, for abundance.
28 And Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt, and linen yarn: the king's
me chants received the linen yarn at a price.
29 And a chariot came up and went out of Egypt for six hundred shekels
of silver, and an horse for an hundred and fifty: and so for all the kings
of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria,
did they bring them out by their means.

The Splendor of Solomon

13 The weight of gold that came to Solomon every year was 660 talents

14 In addition to what the explorers and merchants brought in,
all the kings of Arabia and governors of the land brought in gold
and silver to Solomon.
15 King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold,
and six hundred gold pieces [About 15 pounds, or 6.9 kilograms.]
were used for each large shield.
16 (1Ki 7:2) And he made three hundred shields of hammered gold;
three hundred gold pieces [About 7 1/2 pounds, or 3.5 kilograms.]
were used for each shield. And the king put them in the House
of the Forest of Lebanon.
17 And the king made a great throne of ivory,
and he covered it with fine gold.
18 And there were six steps and a gold footstool attached to the throne,
and on each side at the place of the seat were armrests with two lions
standing beside the armrests.
19 So twelve lions stood there on the six steps, one on each side,
and there was nothing like this in any kingdom.
20 Even all the drinking vessels of King Solomon were gold,
and all the vessels in the House of the Forest of Lebanon were fine gold.
And silver was not thought to be valuable in the days of Solomon.
21 The ships of Solomon went to Tarshish with the servants of Hiram.
Once every three years the ships of Tarshish returned carrying gold,
silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.
22 (2Ch 1:12) So King Solomon was greater than all the kings of the earth
in wealth and wisdom.
23 (1Ki 4:34) All the kings of the earth sought out an audience
before Solomon to hear his wisdom that God gave to his mind.
24 Every year each man brought his own tribute, vessels of silver and gold,
garments, myrrh, spices, horses, and mules.
25 (1Ki 4:26; 10:26; 2Ch 1:14) Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses
and chariots and twelve thousand horses, and he put them in designated cities
and with him in Jerusalem.
26 (Ge 15:18; 1Ki 4:21) He ruled over all the kings from the River
[Euphrates River.] to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt.
27 (2Ch 1:15-17) So the king made silver in Jerusalem as abundant as stones
and cedar as plentiful as sycamore trees in the lowlands of the Shephelah.
28 (2Ch 1:16) The horses of Solomon were imported from Egypt
and from all other lands.

His Wisdom
22 And king Solomon passed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom.

to hear his wisdom, that God had put in his heart.
24 And they brought every man his present, vessels of silver, and vessels
of gold, and raiment, harness, and spices, horses, and mules,
a rate year by year.
25 And Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots,
and twelve thousand horsemen; whom he bestowed in the chariot cities,
and with the king at Jerusalem.
26 And he reigned over all the kings from the river even unto the land
of the Philistines, and to the border of Egypt.
27 And the king made silver in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar trees made
he as the sycomore trees that are in the low plains in abundance.
28 And they brought unto Solomon horses out of Egypt, and out of all lands.
29 Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, first and last, are they not written
in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the prophecy of Ahijah
the Shilonite, and in the visions of Iddo the seer against Jeroboam
the son of Nebat?
30 And Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years.
31 And Solomon slept with his fathers, and he was buried in the city
of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.
1 Kings 11
Solomon's Apostasy
1 (Dt 17:17; Ne 13:23-27) But King Solomon loved many foreign women
in addition to the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites,
Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites,
2 (Ex 34:16; 23:32-33) from the nations which the Lord warned the children
of Israel about, saying, "You shall not go in to them, nor shall they come
in to you, for they will surely turn your heart away toward their gods."
Solomon clung to these in love.
3 (2Sa 5:13-16) He had seven hundred wives who were princesses
and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart away.
4 (1Ki 9:4; 8:61) For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away
after other gods, and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God
as the heart of David his father had been.
5 (Jdg 2:13; 1Ki 11:7) For Solomon went after Ashtoreth, the goddess
of the Sidonians, and after Molek, the abomination of the Ammonites.
6 Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not fully
follow the Lord as his father David had done.
7 (Nu 21:29; Jdg 11:24) Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh,
the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is close to Jerusalem,
and for Molek, the abomination of the children of Ammon.
8 He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense
and sacrificed to their gods.
9 (1Ki 3:5; 9:2) The Lord was angry with Solomon
because he turned his heart away from the Lord God of Israel,
who had appeared to him twice,
10 and had warned him about this, that he should not follow other gods,
but he was disobedient to the Lord's command.
11 (1Ki 11:31; 12:15-16) Therefore the Lord said to Solomon,
"Since you have done this and have not kept My covenant and statutes,
which I commanded you, I will surely take the kingdom from you
and give it to your servant.
12 I will not do this in your lifetime for your father David's sake,
but I will tear it out of the hand of your son.
13 (1Ki 12:20; Dt 12:11) However, I will not take the whole kingdom away,
but will preserve one tribe for your son for David My servant's sake
and for the sake of Jerusalem which I chose."
Solomon's Adversaries
14 The Lord stirred up an adversary against Solomon, Hadad the Edomite.
He was a prince of Edom.
15 (2Sa 8:14; Dt 20:13) For when David was in Edom, and Joab the commander
of the army had gone to bury the slain, he had killed every male in Edom
16 (for six months Joab stayed there with his men
until he had killed every male in Edom).
17 But Hadad fled to Egypt, he and some Edomites who served his father,
Hadad still being a small child.
18 (Nu 10:12; Dt 1:1) They set out from Midian and went to Paran,
and they gathered men from Paran and then arrived in Egypt
and presented him before Pharaoh king of Egypt,
who gave him a house and provisions and land.
19 Pharaoh had great affection for Hadad, so much so that he gave
him his sister-in-law, the sister of Tahpenes the queen, as a wife.
20 Tahpenes' sister gave birth to his son, Genubath, whom Tahpenes
weaned in Pharaoh's house. Genubath lived in Pharaoh's house
among the sons of Pharaoh.
21 (1Ki 2:10) When Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers
and that Joab, the commander of the army, was dead, he said to Pharaoh,
"Allow me to depart and go to my own country."
22 Then Pharaoh said to him, "But what have you lacked with me that
you want to go to your own country?"
And he answered, "Nothing, however let me go anyway."
23 (2Sa 8:3; 1Ki 11:14) God stirred up another adversary against him,
Rezon the son of Eliada, who fled from his lord Hadadezer, king of Zobah.
24 (2Sa 10:8; 10:18) He gathered a group of men and became leader over
a band when David killed the men of Zobah, and they fled to Damascus
and lived and reigned there.
25 He was an enemy of Israel all the days of Solomon in addition
to the troubles caused by Hadad, and he hated Israel and reigned over Aram.
Jeroboam's Rebellion
26 (1Ki 12:2; 2Ch 13:6) Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah,
who was Solomon's servant and whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman,
even he lifted up his hand against the king.
27 (1Ki 9:24; 9:15) This is what led to his rebellion against the king.
Solomon built Millo and repaired the wall of the City of David his father.
28 (Pr 22:29) Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor, and when Solomon
saw that the young man was industrious, he made him ruler over all the labor
force of the house of Joseph.
29 (1Ki 12:15; 14:2) At that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem,
the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him along the way, and he had dressed
himself in a new garment, and the two of them were alone in the field.
30 (1Sa 15:27-28) Ahijah took off the new garment that he wore
and tore it into twelve pieces,
31 (1Ki 11:11-12) and he said to Jeroboam: Take ten pieces,
for thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,
"See, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon
and will give ten tribes to you
32 (1Ki 11:13) (but he shall have one tribe for My servant David's sake
and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen out of all
the tribes of Israel),
33 because they have forsaken Me and have worshipped
Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites,
and Molek the god of the children of Ammon and have not walked
in My ways and have not done that which is right in My eyes,
to keep My statutes and judgments, as his father David had done.
34 "However, I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand,
but I will make him prince all the days of his life
for David My servant's sake, whom I chose, because he kept
My commandments and My statutes.
35 But I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand
and will give ten tribes to you.
36 (1Ki 11:13; 15:4) To his son will I give one tribe,
so that My servant David will always have a light
before Me in Jerusalem, the city in which I have chosen to put My name.
37 (2Sa 3:21) I will take you, and you shall reign according to all
that your soul desires and shall be king over Israel.
38 (Jos 1:5; 2Sa 7:11) It shall be, if you will listen to all that I command
you and will walk in My ways and do what is right in My sight to keep
My statutes and My commandments, as David My servant did,
I will be with you and build you a sure house, as I built for David,
and will give Israel to you.
39 I will thus afflict the seed of David, but not forever."
40 (2Ch 12:2-9) Solomon therefore sought to kill Jeroboam.
And Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt to Shishak, king of Egypt,
and he stayed in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
The Death of Solomon
2Ch 9:29-31
41 (2Ch 9:29-31) The rest of the acts of Solomon and all that he did
and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?
42 And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel
was forty years.
43 (1Ki 2:10; 2Ki 21:18) Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried
in the City of David his father, and his son Rehoboam reigned after him.

His Fall
1 But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter
of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians,
and Hittites;
2 of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel,
Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely
they will turn away your heart after their gods:
Solomon clave unto these in love.
3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines:
and his wives turned away his heart.
4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away
his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD
his God, as was the heart of David his father.
5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after
Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.
6 And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after
the LORD, as did David his father.
7 Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab,
in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech,
the abomination of the children of Ammon.
8 And likewise did he for all his strange wives,
which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.
9 And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from
the LORD God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice,
10 and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after
other gods: but he kept not that which the LORD commanded.
11 Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee,
and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded
thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy
servant.
12 Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy father's sake:
but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son.
13 Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to
thy son for David my servant's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake which
I have chosen.
14 And the LORD stirred up an adversary unto Solomon, Hadad the Edomite: he
was of the king's seed in Edom.
15 For it came to pass, when David was in Edom, and Joab the captain
of the host was gone up to bury the slain, after he had smitten every
male in Edom;
16( for six months did Joab remain there with all Israel, until he had cut
off every male in Edom:)
17 that Hadad fled, he and certain Edomites of his father's servants
with him, to go into Egypt; Hadad being yet a little child.
18 And they arose out of Midian, and came to Paran: and they took men with
them out of Paran, and they came to Egypt, unto Pharaoh king of Egypt; which
gave him an house, and appointed him victuals, and gave him land.
19 And Hadad found great favour in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him
to wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen.
20 And the sister of Tahpenes bare him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned
in Pharaoh's house: and Genubath was in Pharaoh's household among the sons of
Pharaoh.
21 And when Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers, and that
Joab the captain of the host was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, Let me depart,
that I may go to mine own country.
22 Then Pharaoh said unto him, But what hast thou lacked with me, that,

Jeroboam's Revolt
26 And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon's servant,

built Millo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father.

Hearing and Doing the Word

The summer after my sophomore year of college, a classmate died unexpectedly.
I'd seen him just a few days prior and he looked fine. My classmates and I
were young and in what we thought was the prime of our lives, having just
become sisters and brothers after pledging our respective sorority and
fraternity.
But what I remember most about my classmate's death was witnessing my
fraternity friends live out what the apostle James calls “Pure
religion” (James 1:27). The men in the fraternity became like brothers to the
sister of the deceased. They attended her wedding and traveled to her baby
shower years after her brother's death. One even gifted her a cell phone
to contact him whenever she needed to call.
True religion, according to James, is "To visit the fatherless and widows
in their affliction" (v. 27). While my friend's sister wasn't an orphan in the
literal sense, she no longer had her brother. Her new "brothers" filled in
the gap.
And that's what all of us who want to practice true and pure life in Jesus
can do-"be ye doers of the word" (v. 22), including caring for those in
need (2:14-17). Our faith in Him prompts us to look after the vulnerable as we keep
ourselves from the negative influences of the world as He helps us. After all,
it's the true religion God accepts.

Week 4 - The Blessings of Grace Day 3 - From Darkness to Light
Col 1:13-14
13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and has transferred us
into the kingdom of His dear Son,
14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
Most of us have no real concept of darkness. We live in a world illuminated
not only by sun, moon and start, bit by streetlights and electric lamps and,
when the power goes off, flashlights and candles. We resist the darkness
For the sighted, being in absolute darkness is a frightening experience.
The dark blots out everything; we can see nothing, not even our own bodies,
and we may become disoriented. The dark seems to press in upon us,
with an almost physical weight that oppresses.
Spiritual darkness is like that. Spiritual darkness,
the absence of light in Christ, is oppressive, weighing us down,
distorting our perceptions of realty.
We cannot judge clearly, for we cannot see at all.
Yet God breaks into our darkness, bringing his light - Jesus Christ,
The Light of the World. When the awareness of Christ invades our lives,
our eyes are opened and we can see for the first time. We see our sin,
God's grace, and the Way he has provided for escape from the dark.
And as we continue to walk in his light, we see even more - the need
for changes in our lives, and God's power to work those changes.
Discernment and wisdom come through his light,
and we understand spiritual truths we could never see before.
Paul says that God has 'rescued' us from darkness and brought us
into the light. We cannot, on our own, accomplish this rescue,
but god through Christ's sacrifice brings it about in us.
He is the light who illuminates our darkness.
Application
a) Many different kinds of spiritual darkness invade our lives
and keep us blind to the truth - sin, lack of understanding,
resistance to the Holy Spirit. What kinds of spiritual darkness
have I experienced?
b) What changes took place in me when I first 'came into the light'?
c) What spiritual truths can I see now that I could not see
when I lived in darkness?

There is a growing Muslim population in Quebec City and a smattering
of Muslims scattered around the rest of the province, yet the vast majority
of Muslims live in the greater Montreal area. n fact, 23% of Canada's Muslim
population live in Quebec. Why is that? It is largely because Francophone
African Muslims are attracted to La Belle Provence.
And here's an interesting, perhaps even shocking fact: There are more
Muslims in Montreal than there are evangelical Christians.
This is one demographic factor creates a challenging environment for churches
and believers here: The size of the available 'workforce' is small
by comparison to begin with. Believers are already is a host culture that
is often either indifferent to religion or resistant to it. And now
this 'new' religious community of Muslims - many of whom do not visibly
or socially conform to Quebec society - are a growing population. It might br
easy for Christians to feel overwhelm by this cultural double-whammy,
yet God has always worked miracles through the small, the few.
Agree in prayer for :
- The people of Quebec, Muslim or otherwise, to be open to the Gospel
- for Muslims who are encountering believers and responding
-for a new group of Muslim background believers who are meeting
together for worship!
- For pastors and believers to be full of passion, faith and vision for
reaching Muslims in Quebec.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,
"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even on My menservants and maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below:
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
