Matthew 23
The Denouncing of the Scribes and Pharisees
Mk 12:38-40; Lk 11:37-52; 20:45-47
1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to His disciples,
2 (Ezr 7:6; 7:25) "The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.
3 Therefore, whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do,
but do not do their works. For they speak, but do nothing.
4 (Lk 11:46; Ac 15:10) They fasten heavy loads that are hard to carry
and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves will not move
them with their finger.
5 (Dt 6:8; Mt 9:20) "They do all their works to be seen by men.
They make their Scripture boxes broad and lengthen the tassels
on their prayer shawls.
6 They love the places of honor at feasts, and the prominent seats
in the synagogues,
7 (Jn 1:38; 1:49) and greetings in the marketplaces,
and being called 'Rabbi' by men.
8 (Jas 3:1; Mt 23:10) "But do not be called 'Rabbi,'
for you have one Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brothers.
9 (Mal 1:6; Mt 7:11) And call no man on earth your father,
for you have one Father, who is in heaven.
10 Nor be called teachers, for you have one Teacher, the Christ.
11 He who is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 (Lk 14:11; 18:14) For he who exalts himself will be humbled,
and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
13 (Lk 11:52; Mt 23:27) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven against men.
For you neither enter yourselves,
nor allow those who are entering to go in.
14 (Mk 12:40; Lk 20:47) Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! You devour widows' houses and for pretense
make long prayers. Therefore you will receive the greater condemnation.
15 (Ac 13:43; 2:10) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
You travel sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he becomes one,
you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.
16 (Mt 15:14; 23:24) "Woe to you, blind guides, who say,
'If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing. But if anyone swears
by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.'
17 (Mt 23:19) You blind fools! Which is greater, the gold or the temple
that sanctifies the gold?
18 And you say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing.
But if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is obligated.'
19 (Ex 29:37) You blind fools! Which is greater, the gift
or the altar that sanctifies the gift?
20 Therefore he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things
on it.
21 (1Ki 8:13; Ps 26:8) But he who swears by the temple, swears by it
and by Him who dwells in it.
22 (Mt 5:34; Ps 11:4) And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne
of God and by Him who sits on it.
23 (Lk 11:42; Mic 6:8; 1Sa 15:22) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! You tithe mint and dill and cumin, but have neglected
the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith.
These you ought to have done without leaving the others undone.
24 (Mt 19:24) You blind guides who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!
25 (Mt 15:19-20; Lk 11:39-40) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! You cleanse the outside of the cup and dish,
but inside they are full of extortion and greed.
26 You blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish,
that the outside of them may also be clean.
27 (Lk 11:44; Ac 23:3) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
You are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed appear beautiful outwardly,
but inside are full of dead men's bones and of all uncleanness.
28 (Mt 23:5) So you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside
you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 (Lk 11:47-48) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build
the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the memorials of the righteous,
30 and say, 'If we lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have
partaken with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'
31 (Ac 7:51-52) Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves
that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.
32 (Ge 15:16) Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers' guilt.
33 (Mt 3:7; 12:34) "You serpents! You generation of vipers!
How can you escape the judgment of hell?
34 (Mt 10:16-17; 10:23) Therefore I send you prophets,
and wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify,
and some you will scourge in your synagogues
and persecute them from city to city,
35 (Ge 4:8; Zec 1:1) that on you may come all the righteous blood shed
on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah
son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.
36 (Mt 24:34; 10:23) Truly I say to you, all these things will come
on this generation.
The Lament Over Jerusalem
Lk 13:34-35
37 (Ru 2:12; Mt 5:12) "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets
and stone those who are sent to you, how often I would have gathered
your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,
but you would not!
38 (Jer 22:5) Look, your house is left to you desolate.
39 (Ps 118:26; Mt 21:9) For I tell you, you shall not see Me again
until you say, 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.'

Luke 20
The Question of Jesus' Authority
Mt 21:23-27; Mk 11:27-33
1 One day, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel,
the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up to Him,
2 (Ex 2:14; Jn 2:18) and said to Him, "Tell us, by what authority are
You doing these things? Who is he who gave You this authority?"
3 He answered them, "I will also ask you one thing. Answer Me:
4 (Lk 15:18) Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?"
5 They debated with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,'
He will say, 'Why then did you not believe him?'
6 (Mt 21:26; 11:9) But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us,
for they are persuaded that John was a prophet."
7 So they answered that they did not know where it was from.
8 Jesus said to them,
"Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
The Parable of the Vineyard and the Vinedressers
Mt 21:33-46; Mk 12:1-12
9 (Mt 21:33-46; Mk 12:1-12) He began to tell the people this parable:
"A man planted a vineyard, and leased it to vinedressers, and went to
a distant country for a long time.
10 (2Ch 36:15-16; Ne 9:26) At harvest time he sent a servant
to the vinedressers so they might give him some fruit of the vineyard.
But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
11 Again, he sent another servant. But they beat him also, and treated
him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.
12 Once again, he sent a third. And they wounded him also and drove himout.
13 (Mt 3:17) "Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do?
I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him when they see him.'
14 (Ro 8:17; Heb 1:2) "But when the vinedressers saw him, they debated
among themselves, saying, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him,
that the inheritance may be ours.'
15 (Heb 13:12) So they drove him out of the vineyard and killed him.
"What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
16 (Lk 19:27; Mt 21:41) He will come and kill these vinedressers
and will give the vineyard to others."
When they heard this, they said, "May it not be so!"
17 (Ps 118:22; Ac 4:11) He looked at them and said,
What then is this that is written:
‘The stone which the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone'(Ps 118:22.)?
18 (Isa 8:14-15; Da 2:34-35) Whoever falls on that stone will be broken.
But he on whom it falls will be crushed to powder." (Isa 8:14-15).
19 (Lk 19:47-48) The chief priests and the scribes tried to lay their
hands on Him that same hour, but they feared the people.
For they perceived that He had told this parable against them.
The Question of Paying Taxes
Mt 22:18-22; Mk 12:13-17
20 (Mt 27:2; Lk 20:26) They watched Him and sent out spies who pretended
to be righteous men, that they might seize Him in His words to hand Him
over to the power and authority of the governor.
21 (Jn 3:2) So they asked Him, "Teacher, we know that You speak
and teach rightly. And You do not show partiality, but You truly
teach the way of God.
22 Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"
23 (1Co 3:19) He perceived their craftiness and said to them,
"Why do you test Me?
24 (Mt 18:28) Show Me a denarius.
(Gk. denarius, a coin worth about a day's wage.)
Whose image and inscription does it have?"
They said, "Caesar's."
25 (Mt 22:21; Mk 12:17) He said to them, "Then render to Caesar
what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."
26 (Lk 20:20) They could not catch Him in His words before the people.
And they marveled at His answer and were silent.
The Question About the Resurrection
Mt 22:23-33; Mk 12:18-27
27 (Mt 16:1; 22:23-33) Some of the Sadducees, who deny that
there is any resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,
28 "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies,
having a wife but no children, then this man should take the wife
and raise up children for his brother.(Dt 25:5-6.)
29 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife
and died childless.
30 The second took her as wife, and he died childless.
31 And then the third took her, and in like manner,
all seven died and left no children.
32 Last of all, the woman died also.
33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife will she be?
For the seven had her as a wife."
34 (Lk 16:8; 17:27) Jesus answered them, "The sons of this age marry
and are given in marriage.
35 (Ac 5:41; 2Th 1:5) But those who are counted worthy to attain that age,
and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage.
36 (Mt 22:30; Rev 21:4) For they cannot die any more, for they are equal
to the angels and are the sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
37 (Ex 3:2-6) Now, at the bush, even Moses pointed out that the dead
are raised when he called the Lord 'the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob.' (Ex 3:6.)
38 For He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. For to Him all live."
39 Some of the scribes said, "Teacher, You have spoken well."
40 (Mt 22:46; Mk 12:34) After that they dared not ask Him any question at all.
The Question About David's Son
Mt 22:41-46; Mk 12:35-37
41 (Mt 1:1; Mk 12:35-37) Then Jesus said to them, "How do they say
that Christ is David's Son?
42 (Ps 110:1; Ac 2:34-35) David himself says in the Book of Psalms,
'The Lord said to my Lord,
"Sit at My right hand,
43until I make Your enemies
Your footstool."(Ps 110:1.)'
44 David therefore calls Him 'Lord.' How is He then his Son?"
The Denouncing of the Scribes
Mt 23:1-36; Mk 12:38-40; Lk 11:37-54
45 Then as all the people heard, He said to His disciples,
46 (Lk 11:43; 14:7) "Beware of the scribes who desire to walk
in long robes and who love greetings in the marketplaces
and the prominent seats in the synagogues and the seats
of honor at banquets,
47 (Mk 12:40) who devour widows' houses and for a pretense
make long prayers. They will receive greater condemnation."
Luke 21
The Widow's Offering
Mk 12:41-44
1 (Mk 12:41-44; Jn 8:20) He looked up and saw the rich putting
their gifts in the treasury.
2 (Mk 12:42) He also saw a poor widow putting in two mites,
(Gk. 2 lepta. A lepton, meaning "small" or "thin," is a fraction
of a penny and about 1/128 of a denarius, which was a day's wage.
A Jewish bronze or copper coin, it was the smallest coin circulated.)
32 (Co 8:12) and He said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put
in more than all of them.
4 (Lk 8:43) For all these out of their abundance have put in their gifts
for God. But she out of her poverty has put in all the living she had."
The Destruction of the Temple Foretold
Mt 24:1-2; Mk 13:1-2
5 As some spoke of how the temple was adorned
with beautiful stones and gifts, He said,
6 "As for these things which you see, the days will come when
not one stone shall be left on another that will not be thrown down."
Signs and Persecutions
Mt 24:3-14; Mk 13:3-13
7 (Ac 1:6-7) They asked Him, "Teacher, when will these things be,
and what will be the sign when this is about to happen?"
8 (Jer 29:8; Mt 3:2) He said, "Beware lest you be deceived.
For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am He,'
and 'The time has drawn near.' Therefore do not go after them.
9 When you hear of wars and commotions, do not be afraid.
For these things must first take place, but the end will not be at hand."
10 Then He said to them, "Nation will rise against nation,
and kingdom against kingdom.
11 Great earthquakes will occur in various places, and there will be
famines and pestilence. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.
12 (Ac 8:3) "But before all these things, they will seize you
and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons,
and you will be brought before kings and governors for My name's sake.
13 It will turn out as a testimony for you.
14 Therefore resolve in your hearts beforehand not to practice your defense.
15 (Jer 1:9; Ac 6:10) For I will give you a mouth and wisdom,
which all your opponents will be able to neither refute nor resist.
16 You will be betrayed by parents and brothers and relatives and friends.
And they will put some of you to death.
17 (Jn 15:21; Lk 6:22) You will be hated by all men for My name's sake,
18 (Mt 10:30; 1Sa 14:45) but not a hair of your head shall perish.
19 (Ro 5:3; Heb 10:36) In your endurance you will gain your souls.
The Destruction of Jerusalem Foretold
Mt 24:15-21; Mk 13:14-19
20 (Lk 19:43; Da 9:27) "When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies,
then you know that its desolation has drawn near.
21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains,
and let those who are in the city depart, and let not those who are
in the country enter it.
22 (Isa 34:8; 63:4) For these are the days of vengeance,
that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
23 (Lk 23:29; 1Th 2:16) But woe to those who are pregnant and to those
who nurse in those days! For there will be great distress in the land
and wrath upon this people.
24 (Rev 11:2; Isa 63:18; Ro 11:25) They will fall by the edge of the sword
and will be led away captive to all nations. And Jerusalem will
be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
The Coming of the Son of Man
Mt 24:29-31; Mk 13:24-27
25 (Isa 13:10; 24:23) "There will be signs in the sun and the moon
and the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity,
the sea and the waves roaring;
26 (Mt 24:29) men fainting from fear and expectation of what is coming
on the inhabited earth. For the powers of heaven will be shaken.
27 (Da 7:13; Mt 26:64) Then they will see the Son of Man coming in
a cloud with power and great glory.
28 (Ro 8:23; Eph 4:30) When these things begin to happen,
look up and lift up your heads, for your redemption is drawing near."
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
Mt 24:32-35; Mk 13:28-31
29 He told them this parable: "Look at the fig tree, and all the trees.
30 When they are sprouting leaves already,
you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near.
31 So in like manner, when you see these things happening,
you know that the kingdom of God is near.
32 (Mt 24:34; Mk 13:30) "Truly, I tell you, this generation will not pass
away until all these things are fulfilled.
33 (Mt 5:18; Ps 102:26) Heaven and earth will pass away,
but My words will not pass away.
Exhortation to Watch
34 (Mk 4:19; Lev 10:9) "Take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts
become burdened by excessiveness and drunkenness and anxieties of life,
and that Day comes on you unexpectedly.
35 For as a snare it will come on all those who dwell on the face
of the whole earth.
36 (Mt 26:41; 25:13) Therefore watch always and pray that you may be
counted worthy to escape all these things that will happen
and to stand before the Son of Man."
37 (Mt 21:1; 21:17) Each day He was teaching in the temple,
and each night He went out and stayed on the mountain
called the Mount of Olives.
38 And all the people came early in the morning to hear Him in the temple.

2 Corinthians 1:3-8
The Commissioning of the Disciples
Mk 16:14-18; Lk 24:36-49; Jn 20:19-23; Ac 1:6-8
3 (Eph 1:3; 1Pe 1:3; Ro 15:5-6) Blessed be God,
the Father of our Lord ÂJesus Christ,
the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort,
4 (Isa 51:12; 2Co 7:6-7)who comforts us in all our tribulation,
that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble
by the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
5 (Col 1:24; Php 3:10) As the sufferings of Christ abound in us,
so our consolation also abounds through Christ.
6 (2Ti 2:10) If we are afflicted, it is for your consolation
and salvation, which is effective in enduring the same sufferings
which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation
and salvation.
7 Our hope for you is steadfast, knowing that as you partake
in the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.
8 (1Co 15:32) For we would not, brothers, have you ignorant
of our troubles which came to us in Asia. We were pressured
beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life.
When my daughter Hayley came to visit me, I saw her three-year-old son,
Callum, wearing a strange piece of clothing. Called a ScratchMeNot,
it's a long-sleeved top with mittens attached to the sleeves. My grandson
Callum suffers from chronic eczema, a skin disease that makes his skin itch,
making it rough and sore. "The ScratchMeNot prevents Callum from scratching
and injuring his skin," Hayley explained.
Seven months later, Hayley's skin flared up, and she couldn't stop scratching.
"I now understand what Callum endures," Hayley confessed to me.
"Maybe I should wear a ScratchMeNot!"
Hayley's situation reminded me of 2 Corinthians 1:3-5, in which Paul says that
our God is "the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles,
so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves
receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ,
so also our comfort abounds through Christ."
Sometimes God allows us to go through trying times such as an illness, loss,
or crisis. He teaches us through our suffering to appreciate the greatest
suffering that Christ went through on our behalf on the cross. In turn,
when we rely on Him for comfort and strength, we're able to comfort
and encourage others in their suffering. Let's reflect on whom we can extend
comfort to because of what God has brought us through.

Week 7 Promises of Grace - Day 4 - Giving and Receiving
Luke 6:38
38 "Give, and it will be given to you: Good measure, pressed down,
shaken together, and running over will men give unto you.
For with the measure you use, it will be measured unto you."
"Just give the Lord", the voice on the radio declared. "Give, and he will
give back to you, a hundredfold." The preacher went on to explain how
an old woman on social security had sent her last $10 to support his
ministry, and the next day she got an anonymous money order for
a $1000 . "The Lord will be faithful to his Word," the preacher
concluded. "You give, and you'll receive."
The Lord is, of course, faithful to his Word. But many well-meaning Christians
have interpreted Luke 6:38 as a "paymant in kind" bargain with God:
if I give God my dollar, he's obliged to return it to me with interest.
This "seed-sowing" fallacy, where $20 supposedly becomes $2000 by
an act of divine, multiplication, has caused much
disappointment and frustration.
The "giving and receiving" principle is a valid one; the Lord does, indeed say
"Give, and it will be given to you," but he does not specify what the "return"
will be. The verse appears in the context of forgiveness, of not judging; the
principle is not investment, in any material sense, but generosity.
As we give, as few are compassionate with others, we take on the
character of the Lord himself. He is generous and giving, and he gives
to us as we give ourselves in love to others.
Application
a) Have I ever "given" to God ot to others as a bribe, to get something
in return?
b) What is God's concept of giving, as demonstrated
in the gift of Jeus Christ?
c) How can this verse help me to give more selflessly?

As of Autumn 2014, St. John's does not have a local CNMM network. Pray with us
for God's people to come together in prayer and cooperative efforts to reach Muslims with the Good News.
St. John's has one mosque and 2 more musallas , or prayer locations, which
may grow into mosques of their own. The mosque is called Masjid an Noor,
The Mosque of the Light, and mosque historical documents record a trip in 1986
to Saudi Arabia to raise funds for the land purchase and construction costs.
A small number of Muslim families had come prior to 1964, but moved on to
other places after a short time. After this date, a small community began
to remain and grow , reaching about 25 families in the 1980s. A number
of international students also join the community annually
ranging from 25 to 60.
In 2014 the mosque website reports the community is made up of some 200
families and many university students attending Memorial University. A
small number of native Newfoundlanders have also converted to the Islamic
faith, one saying of this religion in Newfoundland, "Islam is a growing face".
With the growth of the community, the current challenge is lack of space
in the mosque, which they are now looking at expanding.
Pray for
- The true Light of life, Jesus Christ, to be revealed to Muslims
in Newfoundland through the word, dreams, visions and answers to prayer.
- Christians to be as "wise as serpents and harmless as doves" regarding
Islam and reaching out in loving witness to Muslims in St. John's.
- for a dedicated, intentional witness to the growing number of Muslim
students on the university, college and trade school campuses.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 : 17 12 They were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other,
"What does this mean?"
13 (1Co 14:23) Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine."
Peter's Speech at Pentecost
14 (Ac 1:26) But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice
and said to them, "Men of Judea and all you who dwell in Jerusalem,
let this be known to you, and listen to my words.
15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose,
since it is the third hour of the day.
16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

- Pray for Christian workers an organisations focused on seeing effective
discipleship movements among Muslim people.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to continue to inspire you to have god's heart for
Muslims, to see them as He does, and to be the light that then to Jesus.
Matthew 5:14-15 : 14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a
hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under
a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the
house."
Ideas for prayer
- Pray for opportunities to show the love of Christ to Muslims around you
- Pray for, and offer generous hospitality to, those you know who are serving
Christ among Muslim people -
Romans 12:13 "contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality."
- When you gather with fellow believers, remember to pray for Muslims
throughout the year and encourage them to also participate in 30 Days!
My paternal side is of Muslim heritage and will offer this section to further
call for Muslim converts to Christian and any other converts to Christianity
(Hindus, Jews, aboriginals Canadian, atheists, secular humanists, ...) .

a) Pray for the province of Alberta as follows:
I) Pray for the leaders of Alberta, that God's Spirit would influence them
to act justly, serve with integrity and honour high moral standards.

supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings for everyone,
2 (Ezr 6:10) for kings and for all who are in authority, that we may lead

in the sight of God our Savior,

The Denouncing of the Scribes and Pharisees

3 Therefore, whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do,

and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves will not move

The Question of Jesus' Authority

You doing these things? Who is he who gave You this authority?"
3 He answered them, "I will also ask you one thing. Answer Me:
4 (Lk 15:18) Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?"
5 They debated with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,'
He will say, 'Why then did you not believe him?'
6 (Mt 21:26; 11:9) But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us,
for they are persuaded that John was a prophet."
7 So they answered that they did not know where it was from.
8 Jesus said to them,
"Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
The Parable of the Vineyard and the Vinedressers
Mt 21:33-46; Mk 12:1-12
9 (Mt 21:33-46; Mk 12:1-12) He began to tell the people this parable:
"A man planted a vineyard, and leased it to vinedressers, and went to
a distant country for a long time.
10 (2Ch 36:15-16; Ne 9:26) At harvest time he sent a servant
to the vinedressers so they might give him some fruit of the vineyard.
But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
11 Again, he sent another servant. But they beat him also, and treated
him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.
12 Once again, he sent a third. And they wounded him also and drove himout.
13 (Mt 3:17) "Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do?
I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him when they see him.'
14 (Ro 8:17; Heb 1:2) "But when the vinedressers saw him, they debated
among themselves, saying, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him,
that the inheritance may be ours.'
15 (Heb 13:12) So they drove him out of the vineyard and killed him.
"What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
16 (Lk 19:27; Mt 21:41) He will come and kill these vinedressers
and will give the vineyard to others."
When they heard this, they said, "May it not be so!"

The Question of Paying Taxes
Mt 22:18-22; Mk 12:13-17
20 (Mt 27:2; Lk 20:26) They watched Him and sent out spies who pretended
to be righteous men, that they might seize Him in His words to hand Him
over to the power and authority of the governor.
21 (Jn 3:2) So they asked Him, "Teacher, we know that You speak
and teach rightly. And You do not show partiality, but You truly
teach the way of God.
22 Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"
23 (1Co 3:19) He perceived their craftiness and said to them,
"Why do you test Me?
24 (Mt 18:28) Show Me a denarius.
(Gk. denarius, a coin worth about a day's wage.)
Whose image and inscription does it have?"
They said, "Caesar's."
25 (Mt 22:21; Mk 12:17) He said to them, "Then render to Caesar
what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."
26 (Lk 20:20) They could not catch Him in His words before the people.
And they marveled at His answer and were silent.
The Question About the Resurrection
Mt 22:23-33; Mk 12:18-27
27 (Mt 16:1; 22:23-33) Some of the Sadducees, who deny that
there is any resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,
28 "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies,
having a wife but no children, then this man should take the wife
and raise up children for his brother.(Dt 25:5-6.)
29 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife
and died childless.
30 The second took her as wife, and he died childless.
31 And then the third took her, and in like manner,
all seven died and left no children.
32 Last of all, the woman died also.
33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife will she be?
For the seven had her as a wife."
34 (Lk 16:8; 17:27) Jesus answered them, "The sons of this age marry
and are given in marriage.
35 (Ac 5:41; 2Th 1:5) But those who are counted worthy to attain that age,
and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage.

to the angels and are the sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

The Question About David's Son
Mt 22:41-46; Mk 12:35-37
41 (Mt 1:1; Mk 12:35-37) Then Jesus said to them, "How do they say
that Christ is David's Son?
42 (Ps 110:1; Ac 2:34-35) David himself says in the Book of Psalms,
'The Lord said to my Lord,

The Denouncing of the Scribes

The Widow's Offering
Mk 12:41-44
1 (Mk 12:41-44; Jn 8:20) He looked up and saw the rich putting
their gifts in the treasury.
2 (Mk 12:42) He also saw a poor widow putting in two mites,
(Gk. 2 lepta. A lepton, meaning "small" or "thin," is a fraction
of a penny and about 1/128 of a denarius, which was a day's wage.
A Jewish bronze or copper coin, it was the smallest coin circulated.)
32 (Co 8:12) and He said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put
in more than all of them.
4 (Lk 8:43) For all these out of their abundance have put in their gifts
for God. But she out of her poverty has put in all the living she had."
The Destruction of the Temple Foretold

5 As some spoke of how the temple was adorned
with beautiful stones and gifts, He said,
6 "As for these things which you see, the days will come when
not one stone shall be left on another that will not be thrown down."
Signs and Persecutions

7 (Ac 1:6-7) They asked Him, "Teacher, when will these things be,
and what will be the sign when this is about to happen?"
8 (Jer 29:8; Mt 3:2) He said, "Beware lest you be deceived.
For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am He,'
and 'The time has drawn near.' Therefore do not go after them.
9 When you hear of wars and commotions, do not be afraid.
For these things must first take place, but the end will not be at hand."
10 Then He said to them, "Nation will rise against nation,
and kingdom against kingdom.
11 Great earthquakes will occur in various places, and there will be
famines and pestilence. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.
12 (Ac 8:3) "But before all these things, they will seize you
and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons,
and you will be brought before kings and governors for My name's sake.
13 It will turn out as a testimony for you.
14 Therefore resolve in your hearts beforehand not to practice your defense.
15 (Jer 1:9; Ac 6:10) For I will give you a mouth and wisdom,
which all your opponents will be able to neither refute nor resist.
16 You will be betrayed by parents and brothers and relatives and friends.
And they will put some of you to death.
17 (Jn 15:21; Lk 6:22) You will be hated by all men for My name's sake,
18 (Mt 10:30; 1Sa 14:45) but not a hair of your head shall perish.
19 (Ro 5:3; Heb 10:36) In your endurance you will gain your souls.
The Destruction of Jerusalem Foretold
Mt 24:15-21; Mk 13:14-19
20 (Lk 19:43; Da 9:27) "When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies,
then you know that its desolation has drawn near.
21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains,
and let those who are in the city depart, and let not those who are
in the country enter it.
22 (Isa 34:8; 63:4) For these are the days of vengeance,
that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
23 (Lk 23:29; 1Th 2:16) But woe to those who are pregnant and to those
who nurse in those days! For there will be great distress in the land
and wrath upon this people.
24 (Rev 11:2; Isa 63:18; Ro 11:25) They will fall by the edge of the sword
and will be led away captive to all nations. And Jerusalem will
be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
The Coming of the Son of Man

25 (Isa 13:10; 24:23) "There will be signs in the sun and the moon
and the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity,
the sea and the waves roaring;
26 (Mt 24:29) men fainting from fear and expectation of what is coming
on the inhabited earth. For the powers of heaven will be shaken.
27 (Da 7:13; Mt 26:64) Then they will see the Son of Man coming in
a cloud with power and great glory.
28 (Ro 8:23; Eph 4:30) When these things begin to happen,
look up and lift up your heads, for your redemption is drawing near."
The Lesson of the Fig Tree

29 He told them this parable: "Look at the fig tree, and all the trees.
30 When they are sprouting leaves already,
you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near.
31 So in like manner, when you see these things happening,
you know that the kingdom of God is near.

away until all these things are fulfilled.

but My words will not pass away.
Exhortation to Watch

become burdened by excessiveness and drunkenness and anxieties of life,
and that Day comes on you unexpectedly.
35 For as a snare it will come on all those who dwell on the face
of the whole earth.

The Commissioning of the Disciples

3 (Eph 1:3; 1Pe 1:3; Ro 15:5-6) Blessed be God,
the Father of our Lord ÂJesus Christ,
the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort,
4 (Isa 51:12; 2Co 7:6-7)who comforts us in all our tribulation,
that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble
by the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
5 (Col 1:24; Php 3:10) As the sufferings of Christ abound in us,
so our consolation also abounds through Christ.
6 (2Ti 2:10) If we are afflicted, it is for your consolation
and salvation, which is effective in enduring the same sufferings
which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation
and salvation.
7 Our hope for you is steadfast, knowing that as you partake

When my daughter Hayley came to visit me, I saw her three-year-old son,
Callum, wearing a strange piece of clothing. Called a ScratchMeNot,
it's a long-sleeved top with mittens attached to the sleeves. My grandson
Callum suffers from chronic eczema, a skin disease that makes his skin itch,
making it rough and sore. "The ScratchMeNot prevents Callum from scratching
and injuring his skin," Hayley explained.
Seven months later, Hayley's skin flared up, and she couldn't stop scratching.
"I now understand what Callum endures," Hayley confessed to me.
"Maybe I should wear a ScratchMeNot!"
Hayley's situation reminded me of 2 Corinthians 1:3-5, in which Paul says that
our God is "the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles,
so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves
receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ,
so also our comfort abounds through Christ."
Sometimes God allows us to go through trying times such as an illness, loss,
or crisis. He teaches us through our suffering to appreciate the greatest
suffering that Christ went through on our behalf on the cross. In turn,
when we rely on Him for comfort and strength, we're able to comfort
and encourage others in their suffering. Let's reflect on whom we can extend
comfort to because of what God has brought us through.

Week 7 Promises of Grace - Day 4 - Giving and Receiving
Luke 6:38
38 "Give, and it will be given to you: Good measure, pressed down,
shaken together, and running over will men give unto you.
For with the measure you use, it will be measured unto you."
"Just give the Lord", the voice on the radio declared. "Give, and he will
give back to you, a hundredfold." The preacher went on to explain how
an old woman on social security had sent her last $10 to support his
ministry, and the next day she got an anonymous money order for
a $1000 . "The Lord will be faithful to his Word," the preacher
concluded. "You give, and you'll receive."
The Lord is, of course, faithful to his Word. But many well-meaning Christians
have interpreted Luke 6:38 as a "paymant in kind" bargain with God:
if I give God my dollar, he's obliged to return it to me with interest.
This "seed-sowing" fallacy, where $20 supposedly becomes $2000 by
an act of divine, multiplication, has caused much
disappointment and frustration.
The "giving and receiving" principle is a valid one; the Lord does, indeed say
"Give, and it will be given to you," but he does not specify what the "return"
will be. The verse appears in the context of forgiveness, of not judging; the
principle is not investment, in any material sense, but generosity.
As we give, as few are compassionate with others, we take on the
character of the Lord himself. He is generous and giving, and he gives
to us as we give ourselves in love to others.
Application
a) Have I ever "given" to God ot to others as a bribe, to get something
in return?
b) What is God's concept of giving, as demonstrated
in the gift of Jeus Christ?
c) How can this verse help me to give more selflessly?

As of Autumn 2014, St. John's does not have a local CNMM network. Pray with us
for God's people to come together in prayer and cooperative efforts to reach Muslims with the Good News.
St. John's has one mosque and 2 more musallas , or prayer locations, which
may grow into mosques of their own. The mosque is called Masjid an Noor,
The Mosque of the Light, and mosque historical documents record a trip in 1986
to Saudi Arabia to raise funds for the land purchase and construction costs.
A small number of Muslim families had come prior to 1964, but moved on to
other places after a short time. After this date, a small community began
to remain and grow , reaching about 25 families in the 1980s. A number
of international students also join the community annually
ranging from 25 to 60.
In 2014 the mosque website reports the community is made up of some 200
families and many university students attending Memorial University. A
small number of native Newfoundlanders have also converted to the Islamic
faith, one saying of this religion in Newfoundland, "Islam is a growing face".
With the growth of the community, the current challenge is lack of space
in the mosque, which they are now looking at expanding.
Pray for
- The true Light of life, Jesus Christ, to be revealed to Muslims
in Newfoundland through the word, dreams, visions and answers to prayer.
- Christians to be as "wise as serpents and harmless as doves" regarding
Islam and reaching out in loving witness to Muslims in St. John's.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 : 17 12 They were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other,
"What does this mean?"
13 (1Co 14:23) Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine."

14 (Ac 1:26) But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice

- Pray for Christian workers an organisations focused on seeing effective
discipleship movements among Muslim people.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to continue to inspire you to have god's heart for
Muslims, to see them as He does, and to be the light that then to Jesus.
Matthew 5:14-15 : 14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a
hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under
a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the
house."
Ideas for prayer
- Pray for opportunities to show the love of Christ to Muslims around you
- Pray for, and offer generous hospitality to, those you know who are serving
Christ among Muslim people -
Romans 12:13 "contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality."
- When you gather with fellow believers, remember to pray for Muslims
throughout the year and encourage them to also participate in 30 Days!
My paternal side is of Muslim heritage and will offer this section to further
call for Muslim converts to Christian and any other converts to Christianity
(Hindus, Jews, aboriginals Canadian, atheists, secular humanists, ...) .

a) Pray for the province of Alberta as follows:
I) Pray for the leaders of Alberta, that God's Spirit would influence them
to act justly, serve with integrity and honour high moral standards.

1 Therefore I exhort first of all that you make
supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings for everyone,
2 (Ezr 6:10) for kings and for all who are in authority, that we may lead
a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and honesty,
3 (1Ti 1:1; Lk 1:47) for this is good and acceptable
in the sight of God our Savior,
4 (Eze 18:23; 18:32) who desires all men to be saved
and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
II) Pray for the churches of the province, that they would be lighthouses
beaming forth the illuminating truth of God's Word.
III) Pray that the Lord would use the Finding the Hope Campaign
and booklet to turn many hearts to Jesus
b) Pray for the Holy Spirit to bring conviction of sin
and Canadian to faith in Christ.

hard times.

and to become a source of comfort to others."
