James 3:1-12
The Tongue
1 (Mt 23:13; Ro 2:20-21) My brothers, not many of you should become teachers,
knowing that we shall receive the greater judgment.
2 (Mt 12:37; Jas 1:26) We all err in many ways. But if any man does not err
in word, he is a perfect man and able also to control the whole body.
3 (Ps 32:9) See how we put bits in the mouths of horses that they may obey
us, and we control their whole bodies.
4 And observe ships. Though they are so great and are driven by fierce winds,
yet they are directed with a very small rudder wherever the captain pleases.
5 (Ps 73:8-9) Even so, the tongue is a little part of the body
and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles.
6 (Pr 16:27) The tongue is a fire, a world of evil. The tongue is among
the parts of the body, defiling the whole body,
and setting the course of nature on fire, and it is set on fire by hell.
7 All kinds of beasts, and birds, and serpents, and things in the sea
are tamed or have been tamed by mankind.
8 (Ps 140:3; Ro 3:13) But no man can tame the tongue.
It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 (1Co 11:7; Ge 1:26-27) With it we bless the Lord and Father,
and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing.
My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
11 Does a spring yield at the same opening sweet and bitter water?
12 Can the fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a vine, figs?
So no spring can yield both salt water and fresh water.
[1] My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the
greater condemnation.
[2] For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the
same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
[3] Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we
turn about their whole body.
[4] Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of
fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm,
whithersoever the governor listeth.
[5] Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things.
Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
[6] And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among

of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

James 1:19

and does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's

James 3:5 (Ps 73:8-9) Even so, the tongue is a little part of the body

The Tongue is small, but powerful.
The tongue is uncontrollably dangerous.
The Tongue is terribly Inconsistent.
James 3:9-10

The tongue can be tamed
Let's address inappropriate use of our tongue.
Eph 4:29
29 (Col 4:6) Let no unwholesome word proceed out of your mouth, but only
that which is good for building up, that it may give grace to the listeners.
[29] Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which
is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
1st - We should avoid profanity and vulgar talk
Matthew 12:34
34 (Mt 23:33; Lk 6:45; Mt 3:7O) generation of vipers, how can you, being evil,
speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
[34] O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things?
for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
The truth is that our words come from what is deep within our hearts.
So what lies deep down in your heart?
2nd - We can and should avoid complaining and arguing.
Philip 2:14
14 (1Pe 4:9; 1Co 10:10) Do all things without murmuring and disputing,

3rd - We should avoid gossip and slander.
Proverbs 20:19
19 (Pr 11:13; Ro 16:18) He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets;
therefore do not meddle with him who flatters with his lips.
[19] He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets:
Therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
Proverbs 17:4
4 A wicked doer gives heed to false lips,
and a liar gives ear to a wayward tongue.
[4] A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips;
And a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
Proverbs 26:20
20 (Pr 22:10; 16:28) Where there is no wood, the fire goes out;
so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceases.
[20] Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out:
So where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.

4th , We should avoid lying.
5th , We should avoid negative speech that criticises and tear people down.
Matthew 7:3
3 (Jn 8:7-9) "And why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye,
but do not consider the plank that is in your own eye?"
[3] And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye,
but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
A) We should use our tongue for praise, prayer, confession and thanksgiving
to God.
B) We should use our tongue for teaching others of the love of God
and Word of God
C) We should use our tongue to encourage and build others up according
to their needs.
Proverbs 25:11
11 (Pr 15:23; Isa 50:4) A word fitly spoken
is like apples of gold in settings of silver.

Proverbs 12:25
25 (Pr 15:13; 15:23) Heaviness in the heart of man makes it droop,
but a good word makes it glad.

A) Ask God for Help.
B) Be slow to speak
Proverbs 17:28
28 (Job 13:5) Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise;
and he who shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

A Prophecy Against Ammon

of the Lord God. Thus says the Lord God: Because you said, "Aha!" against
My sanctuary when it was profaned, and against the land of Israel
when it was made desolate, and against the house of Judah
when they went into captivity,
4 (Dt 28:33; 28:51) therefore, I will deliver you to the men of the East
for a possession, and they shall set their camps among you
and make their dwellings among you. They shall eat your fruit
and drink your milk.
5 (Eze 21:20; 2Sa 12:26) I will make Rabbah a meadow for camels,
and the sons of Ammon a couching place for flocks. Thus you shall know
that I am the Lord.

your hands and stamped your feet and rejoiced in heart with all your spite
against the land of Israel,
7 (Zep 1:4; Eze 25:13) therefore, I will stretch out My hand against you
and deliver you for destruction to the nations. And I will cut you off
from the peoples and cause you to perish from the countries.
I will destroy you. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.
A Prophecy Against Moab
8 (Isa 15:1-9; Jer 25:21) Thus says the Lord God: Because Moab and Seir say,
Look, the house of Judah is like all the nations,
9 (Jos 13:17; Jer 48:23) therefore, I will deprive the side of Moab
of its cities, of its cities which are on its frontiers, the glory
of the country, Beth Jeshimoth, Baal Meon, and Kiriathaim,
10 (Eze 21:32) and I will give it for a possession with the Ammonites
to the men of the East, so that the sons of Ammon may not be remembered
among the nations.
11 I will execute judgments on Moab. And they shall know
that I am the Lord.
A Prophecy Against Edom
12 (Ps 137:7; Jer 49:7-22) Thus says the Lord God: Because Edom
has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance
and has greatly offended and revenged themselves upon them,
13 (Jer 25:23; Eze 29:8) therefore thus says the Lord God:
I will also stretch out My hand against Edom and cut off man
and beast from it. And I will make it desolate. From Teman even
to Dedan they shall fall by the sword.
14 (Isa 11:14) I will lay My vengeance upon Edom by the hand
of My people Israel. And they shall do in Edom according to My anger
and according to My fury. And they shall know My vengeance, says the Lord God.
A Prophecy Against Philistia
15 (Isa 14:29-31; Eze 25:6) Thus says the Lord God: Because the Philistines
have dealt by revenge and have taken vengeance with a spiteful heart
to destroy with everlasting hatred,
16 (1Sa 30:14; Eze 25:13) therefore thus says the Lord God:
I will stretch out My hand against the Philistines
and will cut off the Kerethites and destroy the remnant of the seacoast.
17 (Eze 25:11; Ps 9:16) I will execute great vengeance upon them
with furious rebukes. And they shall know that I am the Lord when
I lay My vengeance upon them.

possession, and they shall set their palaces in thee, and make their
dwellings in thee: they shall eat thy fruit, and they shall drink thy milk.

couchingplace for flocks: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
[6] For thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast clapped thine hands, and
stamped with the feet, and rejoiced in heart with all thy despite against
the land of Israel;

deliver thee for a spoil to the heathen; and I will cut thee off from the
people, and I will cause thee to perish out of the countries: I will destroy
thee; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.

they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them.

Zedekiah to Die in Exile
1 (Jer 1:15; 32:2) The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord
when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army
and all the kingdoms of the earth of his dominion
and all the people fought against Jerusalem and against all the cities,
saying:
2 (Jer 21:10; 34:22) Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Go and speak
to Zedekiah king of Judah and tell him: Thus says the Lord: I will give
this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.
3 (Jer 32:4; 21:7) And you will not escape out of his hand, but will surely
be taken and delivered into his hand. And you will see the king of Babylon
eye to eye, and he will speak with you face to face,
and you will go to Babylon.
4 Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah!
Thus says the Lord concerning you: You will not die by the sword.
5 (2Ch 16:14; Jer 22:18) But you will die in peace; and as spices
were burned for your fathers, the former kings who were before you,
so they burn spices for you. And they will lament for you, saying,
"Alas, lord!" For I have pronounced the word, says the Lord.
6 (1Sa 3:18; 15:16-24) Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words
to Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem,
7 (Jos 10:3; 15:35) when the king of Babylon's army fought against Jerusalem,
and against all the cities of Judah that were left,
against Lachish and Azekah,
for these fortified cities remained of the cities of Judah.
Slaves to be Free
8 (Lev 25:10; 2Ki 11:17) This is the word that came to Jeremiah
from the Lord after the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people
who were in Jerusalem to proclaim liberty to them:
9 (Ge 14:13; Ex 2:6) that every man should let his male slave and every man
his female slave, being a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, go free so that
no one should keep them, a Jew his brother, in bondage.
10 (Jer 26:10; 26:16) Now when all the officials and all the people who had
entered into the covenant heard that everyone should let his male slave
and everyone his female slave go free, so that no one should keep them
any more in bondage, then they obeyed and let them go.
11 But afterward they turned around and caused the male slaves
and the female slaves whom they had set free to return, and brought
them into subjection for male slaves and female slaves.
12 Therefore the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying:
13 (Jos 24:17; Jdg 6:8) Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I made
a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land
of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying:
14 (Dt 15:12; 1Sa 8:7-8) "At the end of seven years, each of you shall set
free his Hebrew brother who has been sold to you; and when he has served
you six years, you shall let him go free from you." But your fathers did not
obey Me nor incline their ear.
15 (Jer 34:8; 2Ki 23:3; Ne 10:29) You recently turned and did what was right
in My sight by proclaiming liberty, every man to his neighbour; and you made
a covenant before Me in the house that is called by My name.
16 (Lev 19:12; Ex 20:7) But then you turned around and profaned My name
when every one of you took back his male and female slaves,
whom you had set free, at their pleasure, and you brought them
into subjection to be your slaves.
17 (Mt 7:2; Dt 28:25) Therefore thus says the Lord: You have not obeyed Me
in proclaiming liberty, everyone to his brother and every man
to his neighbor. I proclaim a liberty to you, says the Lord, to the sword,
to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you a terror to all
the kingdoms of the earth.
18 (Ge 15:10; Dt 17:2) I will give the men who have transgressed My covenant,
who have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made
before Me, when they cut the calf in two and passed between the parts,
19 (Zep 3:3-4; Jer 29:2) the officials of Judah
and the officials of Jerusalem,
the court officers, and the priests, and all the people of the land,
who passed between the parts of the calf,
20 (Jer 7:33; 11:21) I will even give them into the hand of their enemies
and into the hand of those who seek their life; and their dead bodies
shall be food to the fowl of heaven and to the beasts of the earth.
21 (Jer 39:6; 52:24-27) Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials I will give
into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek
their life and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army,
which has gone away from you.
22 (Jer 9:11; 39:1-2) I will command, says the Lord, and cause them
to return to this city, and they will fight against it and take it
and burn it with fire; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation
without an inhabitant.
[1] The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, when Nebuchadnezzar
king of Babylon, and all his army, and all the kingdoms of the earth of his
dominion, and all the people, fought against Jerusalem, and against all the
cities thereof, saying,
[2] Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Go and speak to Zedekiah king of
Judah, and tell him, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into
the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire:
[3] And thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt surely be taken,
and delivered into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the
king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shalt
go to Babylon.
[4] Yet hear the word of the LORD, O Zedekiah king of Judah; Thus saith the
LORD of thee, Thou shalt not die by the sword:
[5] But thou shalt die in peace: and with the burnings of thy fathers, the
former kings which were before thee, so shall they burn odours for thee; and
they will lament thee, saying, Ah lord! for I have pronounced the word,
saith the LORD.
[6] Then Jeremiah the prophet spake all these words unto Zedekiah king of
Judah in Jerusalem,
[7] When the king of Babylon's army fought against Jerusalem, and against
all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish, and against Azekah:
for these defenced cities remained of the cities of Judah.
[8] This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, after that the
king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people which were at
Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them;
[9] That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant,
being an Hebrew or an Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of
them, to wit, of a Jew his brother.
[10] Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into
the covenant, heard that every one should let his manservant, and every one
his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any
more, then they obeyed, and let them go.
[11] But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids,
whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for
servants and for handmaids.
[12] Therefore the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
[13] Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; I made a covenant with your
fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out
of the house of bondmen, saying,
[14] At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew,
which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou
shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me,
neither inclined their ear.
[15] And ye were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming
liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in
the house which is called by my name:
[16] But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant,
and every man his handmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to
return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and
for handmaids.
[17] Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in
proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his
neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the
sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be
removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.
[18] And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have
not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when
they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof,
[19] The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and
the priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts
of the calf;
[20] I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand
of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto
the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.
[21] And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of
their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the
hand of the king of Babylon's army, which are gone up from you.
[22] Behold, I will command, saith the LORD, and cause them to return to
this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with
fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an
inhabitant.
Jeremiah 21
Zedekiah's Request Denied
1 (Jer 29:25; 37:3) The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord
when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Malkijah,
and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying,
2 (Jer 37:3; 37:7) "Please inquire of the Lord for us.
For Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is making war against us.
Perhaps the Lord will deal with us according to all His wondrous works,
so that the enemy withdraws from us."
3 Then Jeremiah said to them: Thus you shall say to Zedekiah:
4 (Jer 32:5; Isa 13:4) Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Behold, I will turn
back the weapons of war that are in your hands with which you fight
against the king of Babylon and against the Chaldeans who besiege
you outside the walls; and I will assemble them into the midst of this city.
5 (Ex 6:6; Isa 5:25) I Myself will fight against you with an outstretched
hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath.
6 (Jer 32:24) I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast;
they will die of a great pestilence.
7 (Jer 37:17; Eze 7:9) Afterwards, says the Lord, I will deliver Zedekiah
king of Judah and his servants and the people and such as are left
in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine
into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and
into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those
who seek their life. And he will strike them with the edge of the sword.
He will not spare them or have pity or mercy.
8 (Dt 30:15; 30:19) To this people you shall say: Thus says the Lord:
See, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.
9 (Jer 38:2; 39:18; 45:5) He who abides in this city will die by the sword
and by the famine and by the pestilence. But he who goes out and falls
away to the Chaldeans who besiege you, he will live, and he will have
his own life as booty.
10 (Jer 44:11; 52:13) For I have set My face against this city for disaster
and not for good, says the Lord. It will be given into the hand of
the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.
Message to the House of David
11 (Jer 13:18; 17:20) Concerning the house of the king of Judah, say,
Hear the word of the Lord,
12 (Isa 1:17; Ps 101:8) O house of David; thus says the Lord:
Execute justice each morning,
and deliver him who has been robbed
from the hand of the oppressor,
lest My fury go out like fire
and burn so that no one can quench it,
because of the evil of your deeds.

The Tongue

in word, he is a perfect man and able also to control the whole body.
3 (Ps 32:9) See how we put bits in the mouths of horses that they may obey
us, and we control their whole bodies.
4 And observe ships. Though they are so great and are driven by fierce winds,
yet they are directed with a very small rudder wherever the captain pleases.
5 (Ps 73:8-9) Even so, the tongue is a little part of the body
and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles.
6 (Pr 16:27) The tongue is a fire, a world of evil. The tongue is among
the parts of the body, defiling the whole body,
and setting the course of nature on fire, and it is set on fire by hell.
7 All kinds of beasts, and birds, and serpents, and things in the sea
are tamed or have been tamed by mankind.
8 (Ps 140:3; Ro 3:13) But no man can tame the tongue.
It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.

My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
11 Does a spring yield at the same opening sweet and bitter water?
12 Can the fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a vine, figs?
So no spring can yield both salt water and fresh water.

The tongue can be tamed
Let's address inappropriate use of our tongue.
Eph 4:29
29 (Col 4:6) Let no unwholesome word proceed out of your mouth, but only
that which is good for building up, that it may give grace to the listeners.
[29] Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which
is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
1st - We should avoid profanity and vulgar talk
Matthew 12:34
34 (Mt 23:33; Lk 6:45; Mt 3:7O) generation of vipers, how can you, being evil,
speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

The truth is that our words come from what is deep within our hearts.
So what lies deep down in your heart?
2nd - We can and should avoid complaining and arguing.

3rd - We should avoid gossip and slander.

A) We should use our tongue for praise, prayer, confession and thanksgiving
to God.
B) We should use our tongue for teaching others of the love of God
and Word of God
C) We should use our tongue to encourage and build others up according
to their needs.

16 (1Sa 30:14; Eze 25:13) therefore thus says the Lord God:
I will stretch out My hand against the Philistines
and will cut off the Kerethites and destroy the remnant of the seacoast.
17 (Eze 25:11; Ps 9:16) I will execute great vengeance upon them
with furious rebukes. And they shall know that I am the Lord when
I lay My vengeance upon them.
[1] The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,
[2] Son of man, set thy face against the Ammonites, and prophesy against them;
[3] And say unto the Ammonites, Hear the word of the Lord GOD; Thus saith
the Lord GOD; Because thou saidst, Aha, against my sanctuary, when it was
profaned; and against the land of Israel, when it was desolate; and against
the house of Judah, when they went into captivity;
[4] Behold, therefore I will deliver thee to the men of the east for a
possession, and they shall set their palaces in thee, and make their
dwellings in thee: they shall eat thy fruit, and they shall drink thy milk.
[5] And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels, and the Ammonites a
couchingplace for flocks: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
[6] For thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast clapped thine hands, and
stamped with the feet, and rejoiced in heart with all thy despite against
the land of Israel;
[7] Behold, therefore I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and will
deliver thee for a spoil to the heathen; and I will cut thee off from the
people, and I will cause thee to perish out of the countries: I will destroy
thee; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.
[8] Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because that Moab and Seir do say, Behold, the
house of Judah is like unto all the heathen;
[9] Therefore, behold, I will open the side of Moab from the cities, from
his cities which are on his frontiers, the glory of the country,
Beth-jeshimoth, Baal-meon, and Kiriathaim,
[10] Unto the men of the east with the Ammonites, and will give them in
possession, that the Ammonites may not be remembered among the nations.
[11] And I will execute judgments upon Moab; and they shall know that I am
the LORD.
[12] Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because that Edom hath dealt against the house
of Judah by taking vengeance, and hath greatly offended, and revenged
himself upon them;
[13] Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also stretch out mine hand
upon Edom, and will cut off man and beast from it; and I will make it
desolate from Teman; and they of Dedan shall fall by the sword.
[14] And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel:
and they shall do in Edom according to mine anger and according to my fury;
and they shall know my vengeance, saith the Lord GOD.
[15] Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge,
and have taken vengeance with a despiteful heart, to destroy it for the old
hatred;
[16] Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will stretch out mine hand
upon the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethims, and destroy the
remnant of the sea coast.
[17] And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and
they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them.

Zedekiah to Die in Exile
1 (Jer 1:15; 32:2) The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord
when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army
and all the kingdoms of the earth of his dominion
and all the people fought against Jerusalem and against all the cities,
saying:
2 (Jer 21:10; 34:22) Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Go and speak
to Zedekiah king of Judah and tell him: Thus says the Lord: I will give
this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.
3 (Jer 32:4; 21:7) And you will not escape out of his hand, but will surely
be taken and delivered into his hand. And you will see the king of Babylon
eye to eye, and he will speak with you face to face,
and you will go to Babylon.
4 Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah!
Thus says the Lord concerning you: You will not die by the sword.
5 (2Ch 16:14; Jer 22:18) But you will die in peace; and as spices
were burned for your fathers, the former kings who were before you,
so they burn spices for you. And they will lament for you, saying,
"Alas, lord!" For I have pronounced the word, says the Lord.
6 (1Sa 3:18; 15:16-24) Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words
to Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem,
7 (Jos 10:3; 15:35) when the king of Babylon's army fought against Jerusalem,
and against all the cities of Judah that were left,
against Lachish and Azekah,
for these fortified cities remained of the cities of Judah.
Slaves to be Free
8 (Lev 25:10; 2Ki 11:17) This is the word that came to Jeremiah
from the Lord after the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people
who were in Jerusalem to proclaim liberty to them:
9 (Ge 14:13; Ex 2:6) that every man should let his male slave and every man
his female slave, being a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, go free so that
no one should keep them, a Jew his brother, in bondage.
10 (Jer 26:10; 26:16) Now when all the officials and all the people who had
entered into the covenant heard that everyone should let his male slave
and everyone his female slave go free, so that no one should keep them
any more in bondage, then they obeyed and let them go.
11 But afterward they turned around and caused the male slaves
and the female slaves whom they had set free to return, and brought
them into subjection for male slaves and female slaves.
12 Therefore the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying:
13 (Jos 24:17; Jdg 6:8) Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I made
a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land
of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying:
14 (Dt 15:12; 1Sa 8:7-8) "At the end of seven years, each of you shall set
free his Hebrew brother who has been sold to you; and when he has served
you six years, you shall let him go free from you." But your fathers did not
obey Me nor incline their ear.
15 (Jer 34:8; 2Ki 23:3; Ne 10:29) You recently turned and did what was right
in My sight by proclaiming liberty, every man to his neighbour; and you made
a covenant before Me in the house that is called by My name.
16 (Lev 19:12; Ex 20:7) But then you turned around and profaned My name
when every one of you took back his male and female slaves,
whom you had set free, at their pleasure, and you brought them
into subjection to be your slaves.
17 (Mt 7:2; Dt 28:25) Therefore thus says the Lord: You have not obeyed Me
in proclaiming liberty, everyone to his brother and every man
to his neighbor. I proclaim a liberty to you, says the Lord, to the sword,
to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you a terror to all
the kingdoms of the earth.
18 (Ge 15:10; Dt 17:2) I will give the men who have transgressed My covenant,
who have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made
before Me, when they cut the calf in two and passed between the parts,
19 (Zep 3:3-4; Jer 29:2) the officials of Judah
and the officials of Jerusalem,
the court officers, and the priests, and all the people of the land,
who passed between the parts of the calf,
20 (Jer 7:33; 11:21) I will even give them into the hand of their enemies
and into the hand of those who seek their life; and their dead bodies
shall be food to the fowl of heaven and to the beasts of the earth.
21 (Jer 39:6; 52:24-27) Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials I will give
into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek
their life and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army,
which has gone away from you.
22 (Jer 9:11; 39:1-2) I will command, says the Lord, and cause them
to return to this city, and they will fight against it and take it
and burn it with fire; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation
without an inhabitant.

[5] But thou shalt die in peace: and with the burnings of thy fathers, the
former kings which were before thee, so shall they burn odours for thee; and
they will lament thee, saying, Ah lord! for I have pronounced the word,
saith the LORD.
[6] Then Jeremiah the prophet spake all these words unto Zedekiah king of
Judah in Jerusalem,
[7] When the king of Babylon's army fought against Jerusalem, and against
all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish, and against Azekah:
for these defenced cities remained of the cities of Judah.
[8] This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, after that the
king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people which were at
Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them;
[9] That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant,
being an Hebrew or an Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of
them, to wit, of a Jew his brother.
[10] Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into
the covenant, heard that every one should let his manservant, and every one
his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any
more, then they obeyed, and let them go.
[11] But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids,
whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for
servants and for handmaids.
[12] Therefore the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
[13] Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; I made a covenant with your
fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out
of the house of bondmen, saying,
[14] At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew,
which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou
shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me,
neither inclined their ear.
[15] And ye were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming
liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in
the house which is called by my name:
[16] But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant,
and every man his handmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to
return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and
for handmaids.
[17] Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in
proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his
neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the
sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be
removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.
[18] And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have
not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when
they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof,
[19] The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and
the priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts
of the calf;
[20] I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand
of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto
the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.
[21] And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of
their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the
hand of the king of Babylon's army, which are gone up from you.
[22] Behold, I will command, saith the LORD, and cause them to return to
this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with
fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an
inhabitant.
Jeremiah 21
Zedekiah's Request Denied
1 (Jer 29:25; 37:3) The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord
when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Malkijah,
and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying,
2 (Jer 37:3; 37:7) "Please inquire of the Lord for us.
For Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is making war against us.
Perhaps the Lord will deal with us according to all His wondrous works,
so that the enemy withdraws from us."
3 Then Jeremiah said to them: Thus you shall say to Zedekiah:
4 (Jer 32:5; Isa 13:4) Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Behold, I will turn
back the weapons of war that are in your hands with which you fight
against the king of Babylon and against the Chaldeans who besiege
you outside the walls; and I will assemble them into the midst of this city.
5 (Ex 6:6; Isa 5:25) I Myself will fight against you with an outstretched
hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath.
6 (Jer 32:24) I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast;
they will die of a great pestilence.
7 (Jer 37:17; Eze 7:9) Afterwards, says the Lord, I will deliver Zedekiah
king of Judah and his servants and the people and such as are left
in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine
into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and
into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those
who seek their life. And he will strike them with the edge of the sword.
He will not spare them or have pity or mercy.
8 (Dt 30:15; 30:19) To this people you shall say: Thus says the Lord:
See, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.
9 (Jer 38:2; 39:18; 45:5) He who abides in this city will die by the sword
and by the famine and by the pestilence. But he who goes out and falls
away to the Chaldeans who besiege you, he will live, and he will have
his own life as booty.
10 (Jer 44:11; 52:13) For I have set My face against this city for disaster
and not for good, says the Lord. It will be given into the hand of
the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.
Message to the House of David
11 (Jer 13:18; 17:20) Concerning the house of the king of Judah, say,
Hear the word of the Lord,
12 (Isa 1:17; Ps 101:8) O house of David; thus says the Lord:
Execute justice each morning,
and deliver him who has been robbed
from the hand of the oppressor,
lest My fury go out like fire
and burn so that no one can quench it,
because of the evil of your deeds.
13 (Ps 125:2; Ob 1:3-4) See, I am against you,
O inhabitant of the valley,
O rocky plain,
says the Lord,
you men who say,
"Who shall come down against us?
Or who shall enter our dwellings?"
14 (2Ch 36:19; Isa 3:10-11) But I will punish you
according to the fruit of your deeds,
says the Lord,
and I will kindle a fire in the forest,
and it will devour all things around it.

[8] And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I set
before you the way of life, and the way of death.
[9] He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine,
and by the pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans
that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.
[10] For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good,
saith the LORD: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and
he shall burn it with fire.
[11] And touching the house of the king of Judah, say, Hear ye the word of
the LORD;
[12] O house of David, thus saith the LORD; Execute judgment in the morning,
and deliver him that is spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my
fury go out like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil
of your doings.
[13] Behold, I am against thee, O inhabitant of the valley, and rock of the
plain, saith the LORD; which say, Who shall come down against us? or who
shall enter into our habitations?
[14] But I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith the
LORD: and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall devour
all things round about it.
