David Anointed King Over Judah
1 (1Sa 23:2; 30:31) After this, David consulted the Lord, asking,
"Shall I go to one of the cities of Judah?"
The Lord responded to him, "Go up."
David asked, "Where should I go?"
And He said, "Hebron."
2 (1Sa 25:42-43; 30:5) So David went up there, along with his two wives,
Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite.
3 (1Sa 27:2-3; 30:1) And David brought the men who were with him,
each man with his household, and they lived in the cities of Hebron.
4 (1Sa 31:11-13; 2Sa 5:5) Then the men of Judah came and there anointed
David as king over the house of Judah, and they informed David
that it was the men of Jabesh Gilead who had buried Saul.
5 (1Sa 23:21; Ru 2:20) So David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh
Gilead saying, "May you be blessed by the Lord,
you who have shown this loyalty to your lord Saul by burying him.
6 Now may the Lord show you loyalty and faithfulness, even as I deal kindly
with you who have done this thing.
7 Now may your hands be strong and may you be courageous, since your lord
Saul is dead and the house of Judah has anointed me as king over them."
War Between the Houses of David and Saul
1Ch 3:1-4
8 (1Sa 14:50; Ge 32:2) However, Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army
of Saul, had taken Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul
and brought him over to Mahanaim.
9 He installed him as king over Gilead, the Ashurites, Jezreel, Ephraim,
and Benjamin, over Israel in its entirety.
10 Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul was forty years old when he began to reign
over Israel, and he ruled for two years.
However, the house of Judah followed David.
11 (1Ki 2:11) The length of time during which David was king in Hebron
over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
12 (Jos 18:25; 10:12) Abner the son of Ner, with the servants of Ish-Bosheth
the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim toward Gibeon.
13 (2Sa 8:16; 1Ch 2:16) And Joab the son of Zeruiah,
with the servants of David, went out in order to meet together
at the pool of Gibeon. They sat down, one group on one side of the pool
and the other group on the side of the pool opposite them.
14 (2Sa 2:17) Abner suggested to Joab,
"Let the young men come forward and compete before us."
And Joab replied, "Let them come."
15 So they stepped forward and were counted, twelve from Benjamin
and Ish-Bosheth and twelve from the servants of David.
16 Each one grabbed his opponent by the head and thrust his sword
in his opponent's side; so they fell down together.
Therefore that place was called Helkath Hazzurim, which is at Gibeon.
17 (2Sa 3:1) The fighting was very fierce that day, but Abner and the men
of Israel were defeated by the servants of David.
18 (1Ch 12:8; Hab 3:19) Now the three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab,
Abishai, and Asahel; and Asahel was as fast as a wild gazelle.
19 So Asahel pursued Abner, and as he went, he did not turn to the right
hand or to the left from following Abner.
20 Abner looked behind him and said, "Is that you, Asahel?"
He answered, "It is I."
21 Abner said to him, "Turn aside to your right or left, overtake
one of the young men, and take his equipment for yourself,"
but Asahel was not willing to desist.
22 (2Sa 3:27) Abner continued still to reason with Asahel,
"Abandon your pursuit. Why should I strike you down?
How then could I show my face to your brother Joab?"
23 (2Sa 3:27; 4:6) But he refused to desist. So Abner struck him
in the abdomen with the butt of his spear,
so that the spear came out of his back.
He fell there and died on the spot.
When all of the others came to the place
where Asahel fell and died, they halted.
24 But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. As the sun was setting, they came
to the hill of Ammah, which is next to Giah on the way
to the Wilderness of Gibeon.
25 The sons of Benjamin gathered to the rear of Abner into a single formation,
and they took their stand atop one of the hills.
26 (Jer 46:10; 46:14) Abner called to Joab, "Must the sword consume forever?
Do you not understand that a bitter taste will result in the end?
How long will you refuse to command the people to withdraw
from chasing their brothers?"
27 (2Sa 2:14; Pr 17:14) Joab responded, "As God lives, I assure you that
if you had not said this, the people would have each pursued his brother
throughout the night."
28 So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still.
They pursued Israel no longer, nor did they continue to fight anymore.
29 (2Sa 2:8)( So Abner and his men traveled through the Arabah
all that night, crossed the Jordan, and marched all morning
until they returned to Mahanaim.
30 Joab refrained from pursuing Abner, but instead mustered all
of the people. There were nineteen men besides Asahel
missing from among the servants of David.
31 But the servants of David routed Benjamin and the men of Abner;
three hundred and sixty of their men died.
32 They carried Asahel back and interred him in his father's tomb,
which was at Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men traveled throughout
the night and reached Hebron at dawn.
2 Samuel 2
[1] And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of the LORD, saying,
Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him,
Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
[2] So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the
Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal's wife the Carmelite.
[3] And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his
household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.
[4] And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the
house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabesh-gilead
were they that buried Saul.
[5] And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto
them, Blessed be ye of the LORD, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your
lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.
[6] And now the LORD shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will
requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.
[7] Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for
your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king
over them.
[8] But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, took Ish-bosheth the
son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;
[9] And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel,
and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
[10] Ish-bosheth Saul's son was forty years old when he began to reign over
Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
[11] And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was
seven years and six months.
[12] And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of
Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
[13] And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and
met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one
side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
[14] And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before
us. And Joab said, Let them arise.
[15] Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which
pertained to Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of
David.
[16] And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword
in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was
called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.
[17] And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and
the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
[18] And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and
Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.
[19] And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right
hand nor to the left from following Abner.
[20] Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he
answered, I am.
[21] And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy
left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour.
But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
[22] And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me:
wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my
face to Joab thy brother?
[23] Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end
of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind
him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to
pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died
stood still.
[24] Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when
they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of
the wilderness of Gibeon.
[25] And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner,
and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.
[26] Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever?
knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long
shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their
brethren?
[27] And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in
the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.
[28] So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued
after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
[29] And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and
passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.
[30] And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all
the people together, there lacked of David's servants nineteen men and
Asahel.
[31] But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner's men,
so that three hundred and threescore men died.
[32] And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father,
which was in Bethlehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came
to Hebron at break of day.

1 (1Ki 14:30; 2Sa 2:17) The struggle between the house of Saul
and the house of David endured, but David grew stronger as Saul became weaker.
2 (1Ch 3:1-4) Sons were born to David in Hebron:
his firstborn was Amnon, by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;
3 (1Sa 27:8; 25:42) and his second, Kileab, by Abigail
the widow of Nabal, the Carmelite;
and the third, Absalom the son of Maakah
the daughter of Talmai, the king of Geshur;
4 and the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith;
and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;
5 and the sixth, Ithream, was born to Eglah, the wife of David.
These were born to David in Hebron.
2 Samuel 3
[1] Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David:
but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker
and weaker.
[2] And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of
Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;
[3] And his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and
the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;
[4] And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah
the son of Abital;
[5] And the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David's wife. These were born to David
in Hebron.

The Generations of David
(2Sa 3:2-5; 5:14-16; 1Ch 14:4-7)
1 (2Sa 3:2-5; Jos 15:56) Now these were the sons of David, who were born
to him in Hebron:
The firstborn was Amnon by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;
the second, Daniel by Abigail the Carmelitess;
2 the third was Absalom the son of Maakah, the daughter of Talmai
king of Geshur;
the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith;
3 the fifth, Shephatiah by Abital;
the sixth, Ithream by Eglah his wife.
4 (2Sa 2:11; 5:4-5) Six sons were born to him in Hebron,
and he reigned there seven years and six months.
He also reigned 37 years in Jerusalem.
House of David
1 Now these were the sons of David, which were born unto him in Hebron;
the firstborn Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second Daniel,
of Abigail the Carmelitess:
2 the third, Absalom the son of Maachah the daughter of Talmai
king of Geshur: the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith:
3 the fifth, Shephatiah of Abital: the sixth, Ithream by Eglah his wife.
4 These six were born unto him in Hebron; and there he reigned seven years
and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years.

David's Mighty Warriors
1Ch 11:10-41
8 (1Ch 27:2)These are the names of the warriors whom David had:
Josheb-Basshebeth, a Tahkemonite, was head of the three.
Or captains, or thirty. [Cf. 1Ch 11:11. ]
He was also known as Adino the Eznite,
on account of eight hundred slain on one occasion.
9 (1Ch 27:4) After him was Eleazar the son of Dodai the son of Ahohi.
He was among the three warriors with David when they defied the Philistines
who were gathered together there to fight when the men of Israel withdrew.
10 (1Sa 11:13; 19:5) He arose and attacked the Philistines until his hand
grew weary and stuck to the sword. The Lord brought about a great victory
that day, and the people returned only to plunder.
11 After him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. The Philistines
had gathered into a troop, where the plot of the field was full of lentils,
and the people fled before the Philistines.
12 (2Sa 23:10) He took his stand in the midst of the plot of land,
defended it, and defeated the Philistines.
The Lord brought about a great victory.
13 (1Sa 22:1; 2Sa 5:18) Then three [Text reads thirty], but three has been
translated here on the basis of other textual witnesses and Masoretic
marginal notation. (Cf. 22:16). of the thirty chief men went down
and came to David at the cave of Adullam during the harvest.
Now the Philistine army was in the Valley of Rephaim.
14 (1Sa 22:4-5)At that time, David was in the stronghold
while the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem.
15 (Jn 4:14) David said longingly, "O that someone would give me
a drink of water from the well in Bethlehem by the gate!"
16 The three warriors breached the Philistine camp and drew up water from
the well in Bethlehem by the gate, and they brought it to David. However,
he was not willing to drink it,
so he poured it out as a drink offering to the Lord.
17 (Lev 17:10) He said, "Far be it from me, O Lord, to drink this,
the blood of the men who risked their lives."
So he was not willing to drink it.
These things the three warriors did.
[8] These be the names of the mighty men whom David had: The Tachmonite that
sat in the seat, chief among the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite: he
lift up his spear against eight hundred, whom he slew at one time.
[9] And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three
mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there
gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away:
[10] He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his
hand clave unto the sword: and the LORD wrought a great victory that day;
and the people returned after him only to spoil.
[11] And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the
Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground
full of lentiles: and the people fled from the Philistines.
[12] But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and slew the
Philistines: and the LORD wrought a great victory.
[13] And three of the thirty chief went down, and came to David in the
harvest time unto the cave of Adullam: and the troop of the Philistines
pitched in the valley of Rephaim.
[14] And David was then in an hold, and the garrison of the Philistines was
then in Bethlehem.
[15] And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the
water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!
[16] And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and
drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it,
and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured
it out unto the LORD.
[17] And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: is not
this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he
would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men.

who strengthened him in his kingdom, along with all Israel,
to establish him as king according to the word of the Lord to Israel.
11 (2Sa 23:8) These make up the number of the mighty men who fought for David:
Jashobeam, the son of Hakmoni, the head of the thirty, who lifted his spear
in triumph over three hundred slain at one time.
12 (1Ch 27:4) After him was Eleazar, the son of Dodai the Ahohite,
who was among the three mighty men.
13 He was with David at Pas Dammim when the Philistines were gathered
there for battle. There was a piece of ground full of barley.
Now the men fled from the Philistines.
14 But they stood their ground in the middle of the field, defended it,
and killed the Philistines; and the Lord saved them by a great victory.
15 (1Ch 14:9; Isa 17:5) Now three of the thirty captains climbed
down the rock to David at the cave of
while the camp of the Philistines was set up in the Valley of Rephaim.
16 (1Sa 10:5) (At that time, David was in the stronghold, but a garrison
of the Philistines was in Bethlehem.)
17 Now David was overcome with longing and said,
"Who will get me a drink of water from the well of Bethlehem by the gate?"
18 These three broke through the Philistine camp, drew water from the well
of Bethlehem by the gate, and carried it back to David. However, he was not
willing to drink it but poured out the water to the Lord.
19 For he said, "Far be it from me before my God to do this.
Should I drink the life blood of these men who put their lives in jeopardy?
For at the risk of their lives they brought it." Therefore
he would not drink it.
The three mighty men did these things.

10 These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had,
who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel,
to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.
11 And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Jashobeam,
an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: he lifted up his spear against
three hundred slain by him at one time.
12 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one
of the three mighties.
13 He was with David at Pas-dammim, and there the Philistines were gathered
together to battle, where was a parcel of ground full of barley; and the
people fled from before the Philistines.
14 And they set themselves in the midst of that parcel, and delivered it,
and slew the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great deliverance.
15 Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into
the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley
of Rephaim.
16 And David was then in the hold, and the Philistines' garrison
was then at Beth-lehem.
17 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water
of the well of Beth-lehem, that is at the gate!
18 And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water
out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and
brought it to David: but David would not drink of it,
but poured it out to the LORD,
19 and said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink
the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the
jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it.
These things did these three mightiest.
2 Samuel 23
18 (2Sa 10:10; 10:14) Now Abishai, the brother of Joab and son of Zeruiah,
was chief of the thirty. [Or another three, Cf. 11:20.] He wielded his spear
against three hundred men and killed them, and won a name beside the three.
19 Was he more honored than the three? He became their commander,
but he did not attain to the three.
20 (Jos 15:21; 2Sa 8:18) And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man
of Kabzeel, who had done great acts. He struck down two sons
of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in the middle
of a pit on a snowy day.
21 He struck down an Egyptian, an impressive man. Now the Egyptian
had a spear in his hand, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff,
seized the spear from the Egyptian, and killed him with his own spear.
22 These things Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did and won for himself
a name alongside the three.
23 He was more honored than the thirty, but he did not attain to the three.
So David set him over his bodyguard.
24 (2Sa 2:18; 1Ch 27:7) Among the thirty were
Asahel the brother of Joab,
Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,
25 Shammah the Harodite,
Elika the Harodite,

[18] And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief among
three. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred, and slew them, and
had the name among three.
[19] Was he not most honourable of three? therefore he was their captain:
howbeit he attained not unto the first three.
[20] And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, of Kabzeel,
who had done many acts, he slew two lionlike men of Moab: he went down also
and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow:
[21] And he slew an Egyptian, a goodly man: and the Egyptian had a spear in
his hand; but he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of
the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear.
[22] These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among
three mighty men.
[23] He was more honourable than the thirty, but he attained not to the
first three. And David set him over his guard.
[24] Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan the son of
Dodo of Bethlehem,
[25] Shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite,
[26] Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite,
[27] Abiezer the Anethothite, Mebunnai the Hushathite,
[28] Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite,
[29] Heleb the son of Baanah, a Netophathite, Ittai the son of Ribai out of
Gibeah of the children of Benjamin,
[30] Benaiah the Pirathonite, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash,
[31] Abi-albon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite,
[32] Eliahba the Shaalbonite, of the sons of Jashen, Jonathan,
[33] Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Hararite,
[34] Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maachathite, Eliam the son
of Ahithophel the Gilonite,
[35] Hezrai the Carmelite, Paarai the Arbite,
[36] Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite,
[37] Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, armourbearer to Joab the
son of Zeruiah,
[38] Ira an Ithrite, Gareb an Ithrite,
[39] Uriah the Hittite: thirty and seven in all.

20 (1Sa 26:6) Also Abishai himself, the brother of Joab,
was a captain of the three who lifted his spear in triumph
over three hundred slain and was given a name among the three.
21 He was honored as a leader by the second company of the three,
but he did not attain to the first three.
22 (Jos 15:21; 2Sa 8:18) Benaiah son of Jehoiada was
the son of a valiant man from Kabzeel, who had done many deeds.
He killed two Moabite warriors. Indeed, once he went down into a well
and struck a lion on a snowy day.
23 (1Sa 17:7) And he killed an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits
[About 7 feet 6 inches, or 2.3 meters.] tall. The Egyptian had in his hand a
spear like a weaver's beam, and he went down to him with a staff,
wrested the spear from the Egyptian's hand, and killed him with his own spear.
2 4Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, did these things, and won a name among
the three mighty men.
25 Out of the thirty captains, he himself was honored, and although
he did not attain to the three, David set him over his guard.
26 (1Ch 27:7)Now the other mighty men of valor of the army were

Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,
27 Shammoth the Harorite,
Helez the Pelonite,
28 (1Ch 27:12) Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite,

Ilai the Ahohite,
30 Maharai the Netophathite,
Heled the son of Baanah, the Netophathite,

Live as Servants of God

The Example of Christ's Suffering

"Are you still upset that I want to reduce the size of your favourite
department?" Evelyn's manager asked. "No." She tightened her jaw. She was more
frustrated that he seemed to be teasing her about it. She’'d been trying to
help the company by finding ways to draw in different interest groups, but
limited space made this nearly impossible. Evelyn fought back tears, but she
made the decision to do whatever her manager asked. Maybe she couldn't bring
about the changes she'd hoped, but she could still do her job to the best of
her ability.
In the apostle Peter's first letter, he urged first-century believers in
Jesus to submit “yourselves to every ordinance of man” (1 Peter 2:13).
Maintaining integrity in a tough work situation isn't easy. But Peter gives
us a reason to continue doing good: "Live such good lives among the pagans
that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds
and glorify God" (v. 12). Additionally, this helps us set a godly example
for other believers who are watching.
If we're in a truly abusive work situation, it may be best to leave if at all
possible (1 Corinthians 7:21). But in a safe environment, with the Spirit's
help we can continue to do good in our work remembering "this is commendable
before God" (1 Peter 2:20). When we submit to authority, we have an
opportunity to give others reason to follow and glorify God.

How might God be trying to work in you through this?
Heavenly Father, help me to continue to honour You
in my response to those in authority despite the difficult situations
I may face. Help me to live each day in a way that glorifies You.

Jackie's preschool class took on an exciting project: they were going to grow
flowers from seeds, Each child took the seed, planted it carefully in the
bedding soil, watered, and waited. But Jackie couldn't wait. Every day
for a week he ran to the window box, looked for his plants, poked, prodded,
unplanted the seeds and then planted them again. "It's no use,"
he pouted after the first week. "Nothing's gonna grow in there."
We live in an instant society - microwave dinners, quick fixes, easy answers.
We are conditioned by our environment to expect - even to demand -
immediate response, and when we have to wait,
we become impatient and irritable.
Paul's exhortation to the Galatians, "Let us not become weary in doing good,"
is as appropriate for twentieth-century believers as it was for the new church
at Galatia. We lose motivation when we don't see results,
and weariness sets in.
If our work does not seem to be producing as we hope, we want to abandon it
and move on to a new project.
But God says, "You will reap a harvest if you don't give up." We give up too
soon in our prayers for a loved one's salvation. We abandon hope too readily
when we don't see spiritual growth in our own lives, when our investment in
another's spiritual maturity seems to have no return. The Lord says,
"The harvest is coming; be patient; trust me."
In due season the harvest comes; when it's the right time. When the seed has
had time to germinate, when the roots are string enough, when the conditions
are right, the reaping time will come. But we must be willing to wait for
the due season, the moment of ripeness, when our labor brings its return.
Application

for reaping the harvest?

The Muslim population of Manitoba, understandably centred in Winnipeg, is very
diverse and represents some 48 different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Conservative estimates put their number at 21000 , with some suggesting
it might be twice that size.
Some outreach among Muslims has started, yet in comparison to the size
of this community, there is the need and opportunity for far more engagement.
Continued influx of new immigrants and refugees continues to see the growth
of this Muslim centre in Manitoba.
We rejoice in the Arabic fellowship meeting there and the energetic workers
among Muslims in Winnipeg.
Let us intercede in unity for:
- new Christian workers among Manitoba's growing Muslim population
- new church ministries focused on prayer, equipping and reaching Muslim
communities around them, as well as training new workers
- the Arabic fellowship and their ministries of discipling new Muslim
background believers and for effectiveness in outreach
- for the recent Somali woman who found faith in Jesus and stood her ground
in the face of opposition to her new faith.
- for current workers among Muslims to be blessed, refreshed and encouraged

A married couple walking along a shore is stopped and interrogated by police
asking for proof of their marriage. Elsewhere, citizens guard their words
when critiquing the government.
That's life in the Islamic theocracy of Iran, at least since the Iranian
revolution of 1979. Here, elements of democracy are pitted against the
ultimate authority residing in an autocratic "Supreme Leader." Human rights
are routinely suppressed, especially for women and children.
Ironically, a theocracy designed to enforce Islam is leading to widespread
disillusionment with Islam itself. As a result, more people in Iran reject the
faith and turn to other religions and worldviews.
Today, more than a million of Iran's 83 million people are followers of Jesus,
say estimates from the Group for Analyzing and Measuring Attitudes in Iran.
Siamak is a prime example of these changes. After his brother, Farhad, became
a believer, he mocked him for turning from Islam. But during the COVID
pandemic, Siamak began to think about one common belief held by both Muslims
and Christians: the return of Jesus.
Siamak's search for religious truth inspired a search for Jesus that led him
to surrender his life to Christ and baptize five other Iranian Christians who
had a similar spiritual journey.
The road ahead will be difficult for these new Iranian believers. Persecution
for turning from Islam is common and severe. But God's plan for the expansion
of His kingdom has never been an easy one.
Pray for more Iranian Muslims to see the limitations of Islamic theocracy and
to yearn to know God.
Ask Jesus to reveal Himself to the millions of Iranians who do not know Him.
May they see that He is their only hope
(John 14:6

and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

David Anointed King Over Judah
1 (1Sa 23:2; 30:31) After this, David consulted the Lord, asking,
"Shall I go to one of the cities of Judah?"
The Lord responded to him, "Go up."
David asked, "Where should I go?"
And He said, "Hebron."
2 (1Sa 25:42-43; 30:5) So David went up there, along with his two wives,
Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite.

each man with his household, and they lived in the cities of Hebron.

War Between the Houses of David and Saul
1Ch 3:1-4
8 (1Sa 14:50; Ge 32:2) However, Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army
of Saul, had taken Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul
and brought him over to Mahanaim.
9 He installed him as king over Gilead, the Ashurites, Jezreel, Ephraim,
and Benjamin, over Israel in its entirety.
10 Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul was forty years old when he began to reign
over Israel, and he ruled for two years.
However, the house of Judah followed David.
11 (1Ki 2:11) The length of time during which David was king in Hebron
over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
12 (Jos 18:25; 10:12) Abner the son of Ner, with the servants of Ish-Bosheth
the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim toward Gibeon.
13 (2Sa 8:16; 1Ch 2:16) And Joab the son of Zeruiah,
with the servants of David, went out in order to meet together
at the pool of Gibeon. They sat down, one group on one side of the pool
and the other group on the side of the pool opposite them.
14 (2Sa 2:17) Abner suggested to Joab,
"Let the young men come forward and compete before us."
And Joab replied, "Let them come."

Abishai, and Asahel; and Asahel was as fast as a wild gazelle.
19 So Asahel pursued Abner, and as he went, he did not turn to the right
hand or to the left from following Abner.
20 Abner looked behind him and said, "Is that you, Asahel?"
He answered, "It is I."
21 Abner said to him, "Turn aside to your right or left, overtake
one of the young men, and take his equipment for yourself,"
but Asahel was not willing to desist.
22 (2Sa 3:27) Abner continued still to reason with Asahel,
"Abandon your pursuit. Why should I strike you down?
How then could I show my face to your brother Joab?"
23 (2Sa 3:27; 4:6) But he refused to desist. So Abner struck him
in the abdomen with the butt of his spear,
so that the spear came out of his back.
He fell there and died on the spot.
When all of the others came to the place
where Asahel fell and died, they halted.
24 But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. As the sun was setting, they came
to the hill of Ammah, which is next to Giah on the way
to the Wilderness of Gibeon.
25 The sons of Benjamin gathered to the rear of Abner into a single formation,
and they took their stand atop one of the hills.
26 (Jer 46:10; 46:14) Abner called to Joab, "Must the sword consume forever?
Do you not understand that a bitter taste will result in the end?
How long will you refuse to command the people to withdraw
from chasing their brothers?"
27 (2Sa 2:14; Pr 17:14) Joab responded, "As God lives, I assure you that
if you had not said this, the people would have each pursued his brother
throughout the night."
28 So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still.
They pursued Israel no longer, nor did they continue to fight anymore.
29 (2Sa 2:8)( So Abner and his men traveled through the Arabah
all that night, crossed the Jordan, and marched all morning
until they returned to Mahanaim.
30 Joab refrained from pursuing Abner, but instead mustered all
of the people. There were nineteen men besides Asahel
missing from among the servants of David.
31 But the servants of David routed Benjamin and the men of Abner;
three hundred and sixty of their men died.
32 They carried Asahel back and interred him in his father's tomb,
which was at Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men traveled throughout
the night and reached Hebron at dawn.
2 Samuel 2
[1] And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of the LORD, saying,
Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him,
Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
[2] So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the
Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal's wife the Carmelite.
[3] And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his
household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.
[4] And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the
house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabesh-gilead
were they that buried Saul.
[5] And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto
them, Blessed be ye of the LORD, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your
lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.
[6] And now the LORD shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will
requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.
[7] Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for
your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king
over them.
[8] But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, took Ish-bosheth the
son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;
[9] And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel,
and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
[10] Ish-bosheth Saul's son was forty years old when he began to reign over
Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
[11] And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was
seven years and six months.
[12] And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of
Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
[13] And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and
met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one
side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
[14] And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before
us. And Joab said, Let them arise.
[15] Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which
pertained to Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of
David.
[16] And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword
in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was
called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.
[17] And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and
the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
[18] And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and
Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.
[19] And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right
hand nor to the left from following Abner.
[20] Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he
answered, I am.
[21] And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy
left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour.
But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
[22] And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me:
wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my
face to Joab thy brother?
[23] Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end
of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind
him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to
pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died
stood still.
[24] Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when
they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of
the wilderness of Gibeon.
[25] And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner,
and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.
[26] Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever?
knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long
shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their
brethren?
[27] And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in
the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.

David's Mighty Warriors
1Ch 11:10-41
8 (1Ch 27:2)These are the names of the warriors whom David had:
Josheb-Basshebeth, a Tahkemonite, was head of the three.
Or captains, or thirty. [Cf. 1Ch 11:11. ]
He was also known as Adino the Eznite,
on account of eight hundred slain on one occasion.
9 (1Ch 27:4) After him was Eleazar the son of Dodai the son of Ahohi.
He was among the three warriors with David when they defied the Philistines
who were gathered together there to fight when the men of Israel withdrew.
10 (1Sa 11:13; 19:5) He arose and attacked the Philistines until his hand
grew weary and stuck to the sword. The Lord brought about a great victory
that day, and the people returned only to plunder.
11 After him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. The Philistines
had gathered into a troop, where the plot of the field was full of lentils,
and the people fled before the Philistines.
12 (2Sa 23:10) He took his stand in the midst of the plot of land,
defended it, and defeated the Philistines.
The Lord brought about a great victory.
13 (1Sa 22:1; 2Sa 5:18) Then three [Text reads thirty], but three has been
translated here on the basis of other textual witnesses and Masoretic
marginal notation. (Cf. 22:16). of the thirty chief men went down
and came to David at the cave of Adullam during the harvest.
Now the Philistine army was in the Valley of Rephaim.
14 (1Sa 22:4-5)At that time, David was in the stronghold
while the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem.
15 (Jn 4:14) David said longingly, "O that someone would give me
a drink of water from the well in Bethlehem by the gate!"
16 The three warriors breached the Philistine camp and drew up water from
the well in Bethlehem by the gate, and they brought it to David. However,
he was not willing to drink it,
so he poured it out as a drink offering to the Lord.
17 (Lev 17:10) He said, "Far be it from me, O Lord, to drink this,
the blood of the men who risked their lives."
So he was not willing to drink it.
These things the three warriors did.
[8] These be the names of the mighty men whom David had: The Tachmonite that
sat in the seat, chief among the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite: he
lift up his spear against eight hundred, whom he slew at one time.
[9] And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three
mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there
gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away:
[10] He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his
hand clave unto the sword: and the LORD wrought a great victory that day;
and the people returned after him only to spoil.
[11] And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the

Should I drink the life blood of these men who put their lives in jeopardy?

of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in the middle
of a pit on a snowy day.
21 He struck down an Egyptian, an impressive man. Now the Egyptian
had a spear in his hand, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff,
seized the spear from the Egyptian, and killed him with his own spear.
22 These things Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did and won for himself
a name alongside the three.
23 He was more honored than the thirty, but he did not attain to the three.

The Example of Christ's Suffering

"Are you still upset that I want to reduce the size of your favourite
department?" Evelyn's manager asked. "No." She tightened her jaw. She was more
frustrated that he seemed to be teasing her about it. She’'d been trying to
help the company by finding ways to draw in different interest groups, but
limited space made this nearly impossible. Evelyn fought back tears, but she
made the decision to do whatever her manager asked. Maybe she couldn't bring
about the changes she'd hoped, but she could still do her job to the best of
her ability.
In the apostle Peter's first letter, he urged first-century believers in
Jesus to submit “yourselves to every ordinance of man” (1 Peter 2:13).
Maintaining integrity in a tough work situation isn't easy. But Peter gives
us a reason to continue doing good: "Live such good lives among the pagans
that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds
and glorify God" (v. 12). Additionally, this helps us set a godly example
for other believers who are watching.
If we're in a truly abusive work situation, it may be best to leave if at all
possible (1 Corinthians 7:21). But in a safe environment, with the Spirit's
help we can continue to do good in our work remembering "this is commendable
before God" (1 Peter 2:20). When we submit to authority, we have an
opportunity to give others reason to follow and glorify God.

Heavenly Father, help me to continue to honour You
in my response to those in authority despite the difficult situations

Jackie's preschool class took on an exciting project: they were going to grow
flowers from seeds, Each child took the seed, planted it carefully in the
bedding soil, watered, and waited. But Jackie couldn't wait. Every day
for a week he ran to the window box, looked for his plants, poked, prodded,
unplanted the seeds and then planted them again. "It's no use,"
he pouted after the first week. "Nothing's gonna grow in there."
We live in an instant society - microwave dinners, quick fixes, easy answers.
We are conditioned by our environment to expect - even to demand -
immediate response, and when we have to wait,
we become impatient and irritable.
Paul's exhortation to the Galatians, "Let us not become weary in doing good,"
is as appropriate for twentieth-century believers as it was for the new church
at Galatia. We lose motivation when we don't see results,
and weariness sets in.
If our work does not seem to be producing as we hope, we want to abandon it
and move on to a new project.
But God says, "You will reap a harvest if you don't give up." We give up too
soon in our prayers for a loved one's salvation. We abandon hope too readily
when we don't see spiritual growth in our own lives, when our investment in
another's spiritual maturity seems to have no return. The Lord says,
"The harvest is coming; be patient; trust me."
In due season the harvest comes; when it's the right time. When the seed has
had time to germinate, when the roots are string enough, when the conditions
are right, the reaping time will come. But we must be willing to wait for
the due season, the moment of ripeness, when our labor brings its return.
Application
a) Have I ever felt that my spiritual labors have produced no harvest at all?
b) What does it mean to my own spiritual growth that there is a "due season"
for reaping the harvest?

The Muslim population of Manitoba, understandably centred in Winnipeg, is very
diverse and represents some 48 different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Conservative estimates put their number at 21000 , with some suggesting
it might be twice that size.
Some outreach among Muslims has started, yet in comparison to the size
of this community, there is the need and opportunity for far more engagement.
Continued influx of new immigrants and refugees continues to see the growth
of this Muslim centre in Manitoba.
We rejoice in the Arabic fellowship meeting there and the energetic workers
among Muslims in Winnipeg.
Let us intercede in unity for:
- new Christian workers among Manitoba's growing Muslim population
- new church ministries focused on prayer, equipping and reaching Muslim
communities around them, as well as training new workers
- the Arabic fellowship and their ministries of discipling new Muslim
background believers and for effectiveness in outreach
- for the recent Somali woman who found faith in Jesus and stood her ground
in the face of opposition to her new faith.
- for current workers among Muslims to be blessed, refreshed and encouraged

A married couple walking along a shore is stopped and interrogated by police
asking for proof of their marriage. Elsewhere, citizens guard their words
when critiquing the government.
That's life in the Islamic theocracy of Iran, at least since the Iranian
revolution of 1979. Here, elements of democracy are pitted against the
ultimate authority residing in an autocratic "Supreme Leader." Human rights
are routinely suppressed, especially for women and children.
Ironically, a theocracy designed to enforce Islam is leading to widespread
disillusionment with Islam itself. As a result, more people in Iran reject the
faith and turn to other religions and worldviews.
Today, more than a million of Iran's 83 million people are followers of Jesus,
say estimates from the Group for Analyzing and Measuring Attitudes in Iran.
Siamak is a prime example of these changes. After his brother, Farhad, became
a believer, he mocked him for turning from Islam. But during the COVID
pandemic, Siamak began to think about one common belief held by both Muslims
and Christians: the return of Jesus.
Siamak's search for religious truth inspired a search for Jesus that led him
to surrender his life to Christ and baptize five other Iranian Christians who
had a similar spiritual journey.
The road ahead will be difficult for these new Iranian believers. Persecution
for turning from Islam is common and severe. But God's plan for the expansion
of His kingdom has never been an easy one.
Pray for more Iranian Muslims to see the limitations of Islamic theocracy and
to yearn to know God.
Ask Jesus to reveal Himself to the millions of Iranians who do not know Him.
May they see that He is their only hope
(John 14:6

and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
