Day 188 - 7 July 2021 reflections

Day 188, 7 July 2021

2 Kings 15 ; 2 Chron 26

2 Kings 15

Azariah, King of Judah

2Ch 26:3-23

1 (2Ki 14:21; 15:13) In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel,

Azariah son of Amaziah, king of Judah, became king.

2 He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned 52 years

in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jekoliah from Jerusalem.

3 He did what was right in the sight of the Lord,

according to all that his father Amaziah had done.

4 But the high places were not removed. The people continued sacrificing

and making offerings on the high places.

5 (Lev 13:46; Nu 12:14) The Lord afflicted the king, and he was leprous

until the day of his death. He lived in a separate house. Jotham the king's

son was in charge of the house, judging the people of the land.

6 Now the rest of the deeds of Azariah, and all that he did,

are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?

7 (2Ch 26:23) So Azariah slept with his fathers, and they buried him

with his fathers in the City of David. Jotham his son reigned in his place.

Zechariah, King of Israel

8 In the 38th year of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah the son of Jeroboam

became king of Israel in Samaria for six months.

9 He did evil in the sight of the Lord, as his fathers had done. He did not

turn aside from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who caused Israel

to sin.

10 Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, struck him at Ibleam,

and killed him. Then Shallum reigned in his place.

11 Now the rest of the deeds of Zechariah are written in the book

of the annals of the kings of Israel.

12 (2Ki 10:30) This was the word of the Lord which He spoke to Jehu,

"Your sons will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation."

And it was so.

Shallum, King of Israel

13 (2Ki 15:1) Shallum son of Jabesh became king in the 39th year

of Uzziah king of Judah. He reigned for a month in Samaria.

14 (1Ki 14:17) Then Menahem son of Gadi went up from Tirzah,

entered Samaria, and struck Shallum son of Jabesh in Samaria and killed him.

Then Menahem reigned in his place.

15 Now the rest of the deeds of Shallum and the conspiracy he made are written

in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel.

16 (2Ki 8:12; 1Ki 4:24; Hos 13:16) Then Menahem struck Tiphsah

and all who were in it, and the territories around Tirzah.

Because they did not open up the city to him, he attacked it.

Then he split open all its pregnant woman.

Menahem, King of Israel

17 In the 39th year of Azariah king of Judah, Menahem son of Gadi became king

over Israel for ten years in Samaria.

18 He did evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not turn aside all his days

from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin.

19 (2Ki 14:5; 1Ch 5:25-26) Pul the king of Assyria came against the land,

and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents

[About 38 tons, or 34 metric tons.] of silver, that he might help him

strengthen his control of the kingdom.

20 Menahem exacted the money from Israel, from all the very wealthy men,

fifty shekels [About 1 1/4 pounds, or 575 grams.[ of silver each, to give

to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria left and did not stay there

in the land.

21The rest of the deeds of Menahem, and all that he did,

are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?

22And Menahem slept with his fathers,

and Pekahiah his son reigned in his place.

Pekahiah, King of Israel

23 In the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekahiah the son of Menahem

became king over Israel in Samaria for two years.

24 (2Ki 15:9) He did evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not turn aside

from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin.

25 (2Ch 28:6) But Pekah son of Remaliah, his officer, conspired against him

and struck him in Samaria, in the palace of the king's house, with Argob,

Arieh, and fifty men of the Gileadites with him. He killed him and reigned

in his place.

26 Now the rest of the deeds of Pekahiah and all that he did are written

in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel.

Pekah, King of Israel

27 (Isa 7:1; 2Ki 15:23) In the 52nd year of Azariah king of Judah,

Pekah son of Remaliah became king over Israel in Samaria for twenty years.

28 He did evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not turn aside from the sins

of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin.

29 (Jos 20:7; 1Ki 15:20) In the days of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath-Pileser

king of Assyria came and took Ijon, Abel Beth Maakah, Janoah, Kedesh,

Hazor, Gilead, Galilee, and all the land of Naphtali, and then exiled them

to Assyria.

30 (2Ki 17:1) Then Hoshea son of Elah made a conspiracy against Pekah

son of Remaliah and struck and killed him. Then he reigned in his place

in the twentieth year of Jotham son of Uzziah.

31 The rest of the deeds of Pekah and all that he did are written

in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel.

Jotham, King of Judah

2Ch 27:1–9

32 (2Ki 15:7; 1Ch 3:12) In the second year of Pekah son of Remaliah,

king of Israel, Jotham son of Uzziah, king of Judah, became king.

33 (2Ch 27:1) He was twenty-five years old when he became king,

and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother's name

was Jerusha daughter of Zadok.

34 (2Ch 26:4-5; 2Ki 15:3-4) He did what was right in the sight of the Lord.

He did according to all that his father Uzziah had done.

35 (2Ki 12:3; 2Ch 23:20) Only he did not remove the high places. The people

continued sacrificing and making offerings on the high places.

He built the upper gate of the house of the Lord.

36 Now the rest of the deeds of Jotham, and all that he did,

are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?

37 (2Ki 16:5; Isa 7:1) In those days the Lord began to send Rezin king of Aram

and Pekah son of Remaliah against Judah.

38 Jotham slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers

in the City of David his father. Then Ahaz his son reigned in his place.

2 Chronicles 26

Uzziah, King of Judah

2 Ki 14:21–22; 15:1–7

1 (2Ch 22:1) And all the people of Judah took Uzziah

[Also known as Azariah in 2Ki 15.] and made him king in the place

of his father Amaziah when he was sixteen years old.

2 He built Eloth and restored it to Judah

after Amaziah the king slept with his fathers.

3 (2Ki 15:2-3) Uzziah was sixteen years old when he began to reign,

and he was king in Jerusalem for fifty-two years. The name of his mother

was Jekoliah from Jerusalem.

4 And he did what was correct in the eyes of the Lord as everything

his father Amaziah had done.

5 (2Ch 24:2; Da 1:17) And he sought after God in the days of Zechariah,

the one who instructed him in the fear of the Lord. And in the days

that he sought after the Lord, God caused him to succeed.

6 (Isa 14:29) He went out to make war with the Philistines, and he broke

through the walls at Gath and Jabneh and Ashdod. Then he built cities

in Ashdod and among the Philistines.

7 (2Ch 21:16) And God brought him aid against the Philistines and Arabians,

those living in Gur Baal, and the Meunites.

8 (Ge 19:38; 2Sa 8:2) And the Ammonites gave a gift to Uzziah,

and his name spread even to the border of Egypt because he became

quite powerful.

9 (Ne 3:13; 2Ki 14:13) Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate,

at the Valley Gate, and at the corner buttress; and he fortified them.

10 (Ge 26:18-21) And he built towers in the wilderness, and he dug out

many cisterns because he had a large amount of livestock,

both in the lowland Shephelah and in the plain. He also had workers

in the fields and vineyards in the hills and fertile orchards,

for he loved agriculture.

11 And Uzziah had an army prepared for battle, those who went out

for war as companies in the number of their divisions

by the appointment of Jeiel the scribe, and Maaseiah the officer,

and Hananiah a commander of the king.

12 The total number of chief officers of the mighty men of valor

was two thousand six hundred.

13 And under their hand was a mighty army of 307500 who were able to go

to battle as a strong army and to help the king against his enemies.

14 And Uzziah prepared for the entire army shields, long spears,

helmets, scale armor, bows, and slings for stones.

15 In Jerusalem he made war machines by skilled men to be placed

on towers and corners to shoot arrows and large stones.

And his name went out for a great distance.

He received great help until he was even more powerful.

Uzziah's Punishment for Pride

16 (2Ch 25:19; Dt 8:14) And as he grew strong, his heart grew more proud,

leading to his destruction. Then he acted unfaithfully against the Lord

his God, for he entered the temple main hall of the Lord to burn

incense on the altar.

17 (1Ch 6:10) But Azariah the priest entered in after him,

and with him were eighty priests of the Lord-men of valor.

18 (Ex 30:7-8; Nu 18:7) And they stood against King Uzziah and said to him,

"It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord for it is

for the priests, the sons of Aaron, who are consecrated to burn incense.

Leave from the sanctuary because you have been unfaithful, and there

will be no honor for you from the Lord God."

19 (Nu 12:10) Then Uzziah was enraged, and in his hand was a censer

for incense. And when he became angry with the priests, leprosy appeared

on his forehead in front of the priests in the house of the Lord,

near the altar of incense.

20 Then Azariah the head priest and all the priests turned to him,

and he had leprosy on his forehead; and they hastened to remove

him from there, and he also hurried to leave because the Lord had struck him.

21 (Lev 13:46) So King Uzziah had leprosy until the day of his death.

He dwelt in a separate house with his unclean disease

because he was cut off from the house of the Lord.

Then Jotham his son was over the house of the king,

and he governed the people of the land.

22 (Isa 1:1; 6:1) Now the remainder of the acts of Uzziah,

from beginning to end, Isaiah the prophet, son of Amoz, has written them.

23 (2Ch 21:20; 28:27) So Uzziah slept with his fathers, and they buried him

with his fathers in the burial field belonging to the kings because they said,

"He is a leper." And Jotham his son ruled in his place.

entitled The Wisdom We Need

Proverbs 1:1-9

Proverbs 1

The Purpose and Theme

1 (Pr 10:1; 25:1) The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel:

2 To know wisdom and instruction,

to perceive the words of understanding,

3 to receive the instruction of wisdom,

justice, judgment, and equity;

4 (Pr 8:5) to give subtlety to the simple,

to the young man knowledge and discretion—

5 (Pr 9:9) a wise man will hear and will increase learning,

and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,

6 (Ps 78:2; 49:4) to understand a proverb and the interpretation,

the words of the wise and their riddles.

7 (Pr 9:10; Job 28:28; Ecc 12:13 ) The fear of the Lord

is the beginning of knowledge,

but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The Prologue: Embrace Wisdom

8 (Pr 6:20) My son, hear the instruction of your father,

and do not forsake the teaching of your mother;

9 (Pr 4:9; Ge 41:42) for they will be a garland of grace on your head,

and chains about your neck.

Ellen opened her mailbox and discovered a bulky envelope with her

dear friend's return address. Just a few days prior, she'd shared

a relational struggle with that friend. Curious, she unwrapped the package

and found a colorful beaded necklace on a simple jute string. Attached was

a card with a company's slogan, "Say It in Morse Code," and words translating

the necklace's hidden and wise message, "Seek God's Ways."

Ellen smiled as she fastened it around her neck.

The book of Proverbs is a compilation of wise sayings-many penned by Solomon,

who was acclaimed as the wisest man of his era (1 Kings 10:23).

Its 31 chapters call the reader to listen to wisdom and avoid folly,

starting with the core message of Proverbs 1:7:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”

Wisdom-knowing what to do when-comes from honoring God by seeking His ways.

In the introductory verses, we read, "My son, hear the instruction of your father,

and do not forsake the teaching of your mother;

for they will be a garland of grace on your head,

and chains about your neck.” (vv. 8–9 ).

Ellen's friend had directed her to the Source of the wisdom she needed:

Seek God's ways. Her gift focused Ellen's attention on where to discover

the help she needed.

When we honor God and seek His ways, we'll receive the wisdom

we need for all the matters we face in life. Each and every one.

Week 6 Showing Grace to Others - Day 4 "Formula" for Forgiveness

Luke 17:3 - 4

3 (Lev 19:17; Mt 18:21)"Take heed to yourselves."

"If your brother sins against you, rebuke him. And if he repents, forgive

him. 4 (Mt 18:21–22) If he sins against you seven times in a day,

and seven times in a day turns to you, saying,

'I repent,' you must forgive him."

The context of these verses give us an interesting perspective of Jesus'

disciples. In a corollary passage in Matthew 18, the disciples (through

Peter, the designated mouthpiece) ask Jesus,

21 (Mt 18:15; Lk 17:3–4) Then Peter came to Him and said,

"Lord, how often shall I forgive my brother who sins against me?

Up to seven times?" (Matthew 18:21)

The disciples wanted a "formula" for forgiveness: they wanted to be able to

develop a checklist. Once, twice, maybe three times a brother could be

forgiven, but after that, you could write him off. After all, if

he keeps on offending over and over again, he doesn't deserve to be forgiven!

But Jesus says, " Rebuke him - let him know his fault; if he repents,

forgive him - even seven times in the same day!"

And the disciplines' response is predictable: "Lord, increase our faith!" They

were more comfortable with their own formula for forgiveness than with the

outrageous demands of the love that Christ imposed upon them.

We are so like the disciples. We want to draw a line and say. "This far

- no more. I'll forgive you once, but don't do it again. Now that you're

forgiven, you'd better shape up!". Yet God's love doesn't recognise "again".

He forgives, and no matter how often we come to him inrepentance

for repeated offenses, his arms of forgiveness are open to us.

That is the way God wants us to forgive. He wants us to lay aside our

checklists, put away our suspicaions, abandon our scoreboards, and forgive.

Seven times, or seventy times seven, as often as we have sinned against God

and been forgiven, we are to forgive.

Application

a) Have I ever kept a "scorecard" of performance on someone I

have forgiven ? Why?

b) Why do I need "increased faith" to be able to forgive as

Jesus calls me to?

4) From Prosperity Promises - Kenneth Copeland

2 Cor 9:6

6 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,

and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

5) From a Book called God's Promises for you:

When you are Worried Over Money

1 Tim 6:6-10

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain

that we can carry nothing out. 8 If we have food and clothing,

we shall be content with these things. 9 But those who desire

to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish

and harmful lusts, which drown men in ruin and destruction.

10 For the love of money is the root of all evil.

While coveting after money, some have strayed from the faith

and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.

Remember God's promises when You pray

The Lord's prayer

Matthew 6:9-13

9 "Therefore pray in this manner:

Our Father who is in heaven,

hallowed be Your name.

10 (Mt 3:2; 4:17) Your kingdom come;

Your will be done

on earth, as it is in heaven.

11 (Pr 30:8; Isa 33:16) Give us this day our daily bread.

12 (Ex 34:7; Ps 32:1) And forgive us our debts,

as we forgive our debtors.

13 (1Co 10:13; Jn 17:15) And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."

30 days of prayer for the Muslim World 24 April to 23 May 2020

Under the Keep Praying page

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month

and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days

of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 12 They were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other,

"What does this mean?"

13 (1Co 14:23) Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine."

Peter's Speech at Pentecost

14 (Ac 1:26) But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice

and said to them, "Men of Judea and all you who dwell in Jerusalem,

let this be known to you, and listen to my words.

15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose,

since it is the third hour of the day.

16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 (Isa 44:3; Ac 10:45) 'In the last days it shall be,' says God,

'that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;

your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall dream dreams.'

- Pray for Christian workers an organisations focused on seeing effective

discipleship movements among Muslim people.

- Ask the Holy Spirit to continue to inspire you to have god's heart for

Muslims, to see them as He does, and to be the light that then to Jesus.

Matthew 5:14-15 : 14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a

hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under

a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the

house."

Ideas for prayer

- Pray for opportunities to show the love of Christ to Muslims around you

- Pray for, and offer generous hospitality to, those you know who are serving

Christ among Muslim people -

Romans 12:13 "contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality."

- When you gather with fellow believers, remember to pray for Muslims

throughout the year and encourage them to also participate in 30 Days!

My paternal side is of Muslim heritage and will offer this section to further

call for Muslim converts to Christian and any other converts to Christianity

(Hindus, Jews, aboriginals Canadian, atheists, secular humanists, ...) .
