2 SAMUEL 8
David’s Victories
1Ch 18:1-13
1 (1Ch 18:1-17) Afterward, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them,
and David took Metheg Ammah from the hand of the Philistines.
2 (Nu 24:17; 2Sa 8:6) He also defeated Moab. He measured them with a length
of rope, forcing them to lie down on the ground. He measured two lengths
of rope to be put to death, but the entirety of one length he allowed
to live. So the Moabites became subject to David, bearing tribute.
3 (1Sa 14:47; 2Sa 10:16) David also defeated Hadadezer the son of Rehob,
king of Zobah, when he went to restore his authority
over the River Euphrates.
4 (Jos 11:6; 11:9) David seized from him 1700 horsemen
and 20000 foot soldiers, and David hamstrung all of the chariot horses,
save those for 100 chariots.
5 (1Ki 11:23-25) The Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer
king of Zobah, but David defeated twenty-two thousand men of the Arameans.
6 (2Sa 8:14; 7:9) David put garrisons in Aram of Damascus; and the Arameans
became servants who bore tribute to David.
The Lord helped David wherever he went.
7 David took the shields of gold that were issued to the servants of Hadadezer
and brought them to Jerusalem.

cities of Hadadezer, King David took great quantities of bronze.
9 (1Ki 8:65) When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire
army of Hadadezer,
10 Toi sent his son Joram to King David to greet him and bless him on account
of his fighting with Hadadezer and his defeat of him,
for Hadadezer was an opponent of Toi. Joram brought with him implements
of silver, gold, and bronze,
11 (1Ki 7:51) which King David dedicated to the Lord along with the silver
and gold that he dedicated from all of the nations that he had subdued,
12 (2Sa 10:14; 8:2) that is, from Aram,[About 25 pounds, or 12 kilograms.]

13 (2Ki 14:7; 2Sa 7:9) So David made a name for himself upon his return
from defeating eighteen thousand Arameans

in the Valley of Salt.
14 (Ge 27:29; 25:23) He set up garrisons in Edom. Throughout all of Edom,

10 (2Sa 8:10) he sent his son Hadoram to King David to ask about his welfare
and to bless him because he fought and defeated Hadadezer
(for Hadadezer had been at war with Tou).
He sent all kinds of articles of gold, silver, and bronze.
11 King David also dedicated these to the Lord, together with the silver
and gold which he had carried away from all the surrounding nations,
from Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and Amalek.
12 (1Sa 26:6) Also Abishai the son of Zeruiah struck down 18000 men of Edom
in the Valley of Salt.

2 (2Sa 16:1-4; 19:17) Now there was a servant from the house of Saul
whose name was Ziba. So they summoned him to David.
The king said to him, "Are you Ziba?"
He replied, "I am your servant."
3 (2Sa 4:4) The king said, "Is there no one else from the house of Saul
to whom I may show the kindness of God?"
Ziba responded to the king, "There is still a son of Jonathan who
is crippled in both feet."
4 (2Sa 17:27-29) The king said to him, "Where is he?"
Ziba told the king, "He is at the house of Makir the son of Ammiel
at Lo Debar."
5 So King David sent for and brought him from the house of Makir
the son of Ammiel, from Lo Debar.
6 (1Sa 25:23; 2Sa 16:4) Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan the son of Saul
came to David and fell upon his face and bowed down. Then David said,
"Mephibosheth," and he responded, "I am your servant."

show you kindness on account of Jonathan, your father.
I will return to you every field of Saul, your father,
and you will eat at my table perpetually."

9 (2Sa 16:4; 19:29) The king summoned Ziba the servant of Saul, and he said
to him, "All that belonged to Saul and to all his house, I have given
to the son of your master.
10 (2Sa 9:7; 19:28) You will work the ground for him-you, your sons,
and your servants. You will bring in the produce so that the son of
your master will have food to eat; but Mephibosheth,
the son of your master, will always eat at my table."
Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
11 (2Sa 16:1-4; 19:26) Ziba said to the king, "Everything that my lord
the king has commanded his servant, your servant will do."
So Mephibosheth ate at the table of David like one of the sons of the king.
12 Now Mephibosheth had a young son whose name was Mika,
and all who dwelled in the house of Ziba were servants to Mephibosheth.
13 (2Sa 9:7) So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he ate continually
at the table of the king. Now he was lame in both of his feet.

Life in the Spirit
1 (1Co 1:30; 2Co 5:17) There is therefore now no condemnation
for those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according
to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
2 (1Co 15:45; Ro 6:18; Jn 8:32) For the law of the Spirit of life in
Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death.
10 (Eph 3:17; Col 1:27) And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead
because of sin, the Spirit is alive because of righteousness.
11 (Ac 2:24; Ro 8:2) But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from
the dead lives in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will
also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit that lives in you.
12 Therefore, brothers, we are debtors not to the flesh,
to live according to the flesh.
13 (Gal 6:8) For if you live according to the flesh, you will die,
but if through the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body,
you will live.

these are the sons of God.

Liz cried for joy when she and her husband received the birth certificate
and passport for their child, making the adoption legally binding.
Now Milena would always be their daughter, forever part of their family.
As Liz pondered the legal process, she also thought of the "true exchange"
that happens when we become part of Jesus' family: "No longer are we held
down by our birthright of sin and brokenness."
Rather, she continued, we enter into the fullness of God's kingdom
legally when we're adopted as His children.
In the apostle Paul's day, if a Roman family adopted a son, his legal status
would change completely. Any debts from his old life would be canceled
and he would gain all of the rights and privileges of his new family.
Paul wanted the Roman believers in Jesus to understand that this new status
applied to them too. No longer were they bound to sin and condemnation
but now they lived "according to the Spirit" (Romans 8:4). And those
the Spirit leads are adopted as God’s children (vv. 14-15).
Their legal status changed when they became citizens of heaven.
If we have received the gift of salvation, we too are God's children,
heirs of His kingdom and united with Christ. Our debts have been
canceled by the gift of Jesus' sacrifice. We no longer need to live
in fear or condemnation.

Week 5 Rejoice in Grace – Day 7 Break up Your Fallow Ground
Hosea 10:12
12 Sow to yourselves righteousness, reap mercy,
break up your fallow ground; for it is time to seek the Lord,
until He comes and rains righteousness upon you.
When a farmer prepares to plant his crop, a great deal od preparation
is necessary before the seen can be sown. He has to plow up the ground,
turning under the stubble from the previous harvest, harrow the field to
break up the clods, and fertilise- readying the soil for optimum growht.
A fallow field, one that was not planted the previous season, must be
broken and worked so that the seed can find root in the ground.
The Bible likens spiritual growth to raising crops. God is the one
who brings rain and gives growth, but the success or failure
of the seed - both in initial salvation and in ongoing maturity -
is often linked to how well the soil has been prepared.
That preparation isn't always a pleasant or rewarding process.
We may resist the plowing or harrowing that comes through
the Holy Spirit's convictoin of sin. We may need to dig up boulders
of bitterness and thistles of anger; we may have to plow under the
stubble of the last crop of lessons, working that mulch deep into our lives.
But the final outcome is worth the effort - even the pain - that
preparation brings. Broken up, harrowed, readied for the seed of God's Word,
we are rich and fertile ground, and the seed of righteousness produces
an abundant crop in us.
Application

Spirit to prepare me for God's work in me?

"sow in righteousness," "reap in mercy,"

Ontario has 55% of all of Canada's entire Muslim population. This means that
the whole of the Muslim world is represented somewhere in this province. Most
Musslims are understandably located along the southern border stretching
from Windsor eastward all the way up to Ottawa. Yet Muslims are constantly
resettling in more and more suburban and even small towns of Ontari. Mosques
are springing up, and where there are enough gathered, Islamic schools
are starting.
And they're not comlacent, either. Many Islamic leaders are energetic in their
advancement of Islam in Canadian society. Recently in the Niagara Region,
the local mosqoe distributed via Canada Post as many as 50000 full-colour
brochures on Islam. An that mosque's Facebook page proudly show pictures of
"reverts", or white Canadians who havve converted to Islam as a result of
receiving the flier and engaging with the mosque community. Antoerh town
reports Muslims going door-to-door evangelism.
Agree in prayer for:
- net network leaders - the need is great
- the development of network leadership teams
- good connectiosn with local pastors, congregations and individuals
whom God is calling into this ministry.
- wisdom facilitating outreach and training activities for mobilising
believers
- new full and part-time workers among Muslims throughout all these areas
- for pastors and churches to respond not in fear, but full of faith and love
towards Muslims, sharing Jesus with them.

VULNERABLE IN VANCOUVER
OPEN FRIENDSHIPS LEAD TO HONEST SHARING
Burnaby, Surrey, and New Westminster-three bustling cities on Canada's
western coast-are home to one of the fastest growing Muslim populations
in North America, with most hailing from Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
But some Afghans are Muslim only in name. Consider the case of Omar,
a 25-year-old who arrived in Vancouver in 2019 and was soon meeting
a Christian friend for meals and discussion.
Omar was frustrated with religion and with God, feeling it was cruel for God
to demand that Muslims do enough good deeds to outweigh their bad deeds.
Resistant to the Gospel message, Omar opened up during their fourth meeting,
sharing his struggles with depression and other personal issues.
His Christian friend shared how God had helped her through her struggles.
She explained the difference between following religion and knowing God.
As she spoke about Christ's teaching on forgiving those who have caused
hurt and pain, loving our enemies, and repaying evil with good-concepts
that are foreign to Muslims-Omar was intrigued.
"I have only shared about my depression with my three closest friends,
including you," Omar admitted.
"It touches me to know that you’ve counted me among your closest friends,"
the friend replied.
Christians don't always need a detailed evangelistic game plan.
Sometimes, being a good friend is more than enough.
Pray that refugees, many of them lonely and depressed, will encounter
the love of Jesus and see that God is their loving Father (Isaiah 49:15).
15 (Isa 44:21) Can a woman forget her nursing child,
and have no compassion on the son of her womb?
Even these may forget, yet I will not forget.
Pray that believers will welcome Muslims around them
and show them Christ's love (Matt. 25:35).
35 (Eze 18:7; 18:16) For I was hungry and you gave Me food,
I was thirsty and you gave Me drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in.
Pray that believers will be vulnerable and open to talk with Muslims
about how God encountered them in their weakness (2 Cor. 12:9).

"My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness."
Therefore most gladly I will boast in my weaknesses,

Pray to the Lord to be slow to anger .
Pray for Muslims in Ontario to receive Christ as Saviour
and that chirstian outreach will be strong.

10 (2Sa 8:10) he sent his son Hadoram to King David to ask about his welfare
and to bless him because he fought and defeated Hadadezer
(for Hadadezer had been at war with Tou).

David's Kindness to Mephibosheth
1 (1Sa 20:42; 20:14-17) David said, "Is there still anyone left from
the house of Saul to whom I may show kindness on behalf of Jonathan?"
2 (2Sa 16:1-4; 19:17) Now there was a servant from the house of Saul
whose name was Ziba. So they summoned him to David.
The king said to him, "Are you Ziba?"
He replied, "I am your servant."
3 (2Sa 4:4) The king said, "Is there no one else from the house of Saul
to whom I may show the kindness of God?"
Ziba responded to the king, "There is still a son of Jonathan who
is crippled in both feet."
4 (2Sa 17:27-29) The king said to him, "Where is he?"
Ziba told the king, "He is at the house of Makir the son of Ammiel
at Lo Debar."
5 So King David sent for and brought him from the house of Makir
the son of Ammiel, from Lo Debar.

9 (2Sa 16:4; 19:29) The king summoned Ziba the servant of Saul, and he said
to him, "All that belonged to Saul and to all his house, I have given
to the son of your master.
10 (2Sa 9:7; 19:28) You will work the ground for him-you, your sons,
and your servants. You will bring in the produce so that the son of
your master will have food to eat; but Mephibosheth,
the son of your master, will always eat at my table."
Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
11 (2Sa 16:1-4; 19:26) Ziba said to the king, "Everything that my lord
the king has commanded his servant, your servant will do."
So Mephibosheth ate at the table of David like one of the sons of the king.
12 Now Mephibosheth had a young son whose name was Mika,
and all who dwelled in the house of Ziba were servants to Mephibosheth.
13 (2Sa 9:7) So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he ate continually
at the table of the king. Now he was lame in both of his feet.

Life in the Spirit

Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death.
10 (Eph 3:17; Col 1:27) And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead
because of sin, the Spirit is alive because of righteousness.
11 (Ac 2:24; Ro 8:2) But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from
the dead lives in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will
also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit that lives in you.
12 Therefore, brothers, we are debtors not to the flesh,

Liz cried for joy when she and her husband received the birth certificate
and passport for their child, making the adoption legally binding.
Now Milena would always be their daughter, forever part of their family.
As Liz pondered the legal process, she also thought of the "true exchange"
that happens when we become part of Jesus' family: "No longer are we held
down by our birthright of sin and brokenness."
Rather, she continued, we enter into the fullness of God's kingdom
legally when we're adopted as His children.
In the apostle Paul's day, if a Roman family adopted a son, his legal status
would change completely. Any debts from his old life would be canceled
and he would gain all of the rights and privileges of his new family.
Paul wanted the Roman believers in Jesus to understand that this new status
applied to them too. No longer were they bound to sin and condemnation
but now they lived "according to the Spirit" (Romans 8:4). And those
the Spirit leads are adopted as God’s children (vv. 14-15).
Their legal status changed when they became citizens of heaven.
If we have received the gift of salvation, we too are God's children,
heirs of His kingdom and united with Christ. Our debts have been
canceled by the gift of Jesus' sacrifice. We no longer need to live
in fear or condemnation.

Week 5 Rejoice in Grace – Day 7 Break up Your Fallow Ground
Hosea 10:12
12 Sow to yourselves righteousness, reap mercy,
break up your fallow ground; for it is time to seek the Lord,
until He comes and rains righteousness upon you.
When a farmer prepares to plant his crop, a great deal od preparation
is necessary before the seen can be sown. He has to plow up the ground,
turning under the stubble from the previous harvest, harrow the field to
break up the clods, and fertilise- readying the soil for optimum growht.
A fallow field, one that was not planted the previous season, must be
broken and worked so that the seed can find root in the ground.
The Bible likens spiritual growth to raising crops. God is the one
who brings rain and gives growth, but the success or failure
of the seed - both in initial salvation and in ongoing maturity -
is often linked to how well the soil has been prepared.
That preparation isn't always a pleasant or rewarding process.
We may resist the plowing or harrowing that comes through
the Holy Spirit's convictoin of sin. We may need to dig up boulders
of bitterness and thistles of anger; we may have to plow under the
stubble of the last crop of lessons, working that mulch deep into our lives.
But the final outcome is worth the effort - even the pain - that
preparation brings. Broken up, harrowed, readied for the seed of God's Word,
we are rich and fertile ground, and the seed of righteousness produces
an abundant crop in us.
Application
a) In what ways have I been "broken up" and "harrowed" by the Holy
Spirit to prepare me for God's work in me?
b) How can I apply these verses to myself? How can I
"sow in righteousness," "reap in mercy,"
"break up my fallow ground"?

Ontario has 55% of all of Canada's entire Muslim population. This means that
the whole of the Muslim world is represented somewhere in this province. Most
Musslims are understandably located along the southern border stretching
from Windsor eastward all the way up to Ottawa. Yet Muslims are constantly
resettling in more and more suburban and even small towns of Ontari. Mosques
are springing up, and where there are enough gathered, Islamic schools
are starting.
And they're not comlacent, either. Many Islamic leaders are energetic in their
advancement of Islam in Canadian society. Recently in the Niagara Region,
the local mosqoe distributed via Canada Post as many as 50000 full-colour
brochures on Islam. An that mosque's Facebook page proudly show pictures of
"reverts", or white Canadians who havve converted to Islam as a result of
receiving the flier and engaging with the mosque community. Antoerh town
reports Muslims going door-to-door evangelism.
Agree in prayer for:
- net network leaders - the need is great
- the development of network leadership teams
- good connectiosn with local pastors, congregations and individuals
whom God is calling into this ministry.
- wisdom facilitating outreach and training activities for mobilising
believers
- new full and part-time workers among Muslims throughout all these areas
- for pastors and churches to respond not in fear, but full of faith and love
towards Muslims, sharing Jesus with them.

VULNERABLE IN VANCOUVER
OPEN FRIENDSHIPS LEAD TO HONEST SHARING
Burnaby, Surrey, and New Westminster-three bustling cities on Canada's
western coast-are home to one of the fastest growing Muslim populations
in North America, with most hailing from Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
But some Afghans are Muslim only in name. Consider the case of Omar,
a 25-year-old who arrived in Vancouver in 2019 and was soon meeting
a Christian friend for meals and discussion.
Omar was frustrated with religion and with God, feeling it was cruel for God
to demand that Muslims do enough good deeds to outweigh their bad deeds.
Resistant to the Gospel message, Omar opened up during their fourth meeting,
sharing his struggles with depression and other personal issues.
His Christian friend shared how God had helped her through her struggles.
She explained the difference between following religion and knowing God.
As she spoke about Christ's teaching on forgiving those who have caused
hurt and pain, loving our enemies, and repaying evil with good-concepts
that are foreign to Muslims-Omar was intrigued.
"I have only shared about my depression with my three closest friends,
including you," Omar admitted.
"It touches me to know that you’ve counted me among your closest friends,"
the friend replied.
Christians don't always need a detailed evangelistic game plan.
Sometimes, being a good friend is more than enough.
Pray that refugees, many of them lonely and depressed, will encounter
the love of Jesus and see that God is their loving Father (Isaiah 49:15).
15 (Isa 44:21) Can a woman forget her nursing child,
and have no compassion on the son of her womb?
Even these may forget, yet I will not forget.
Pray that believers will welcome Muslims around them
and show them Christ's love (Matt. 25:35).
35 (Eze 18:7; 18:16) For I was hungry and you gave Me food,
I was thirsty and you gave Me drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in.
Pray that believers will be vulnerable and open to talk with Muslims
about how God encountered them in their weakness (2 Cor. 12:9).
9 (Php 4:13; 2Co 12:10; Isa 40:29-31) But He said to me,
"My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness."
Therefore most gladly I will boast in my weaknesses,

Pray for Muslims in Ontario to receive Christ as Saviour
and that chirstian outreach will be strong.
