and his brothers came to comfort him.

23 Then he went in to his wife, and she conceived and bore a son,

1 CHRONICLES 9

1 So all Israel was registered by genealogies, and these were written

in the book of the kings of Israel. And Judah was led into exile

to Babylon for their unfaithfulness.

2 (Ne 7:73; Ezr 2:43; 2:58) Now the first ones to dwell in their possessions

in their cities were children of Israel, priests, Levites, and temple servants.

A Post-Exilic Genealogy

Ne 11:3-19

3 (Ne 11:1) Some of the sons of Judah dwelt in Jerusalem alongside

some of the sons of Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh:

4 (Ge 46:12; Nu 26:20) Uthai the son of Ammihud, the son of Omri,

the son of Imri, the son of Bani, of the sons of Perez the son of Judah;

5 of the Shilonites: Asaiah the firstborn and his sons;

6of the sons of Zerah: Jeuel and their brothers, six hundred and ninety.

7 Those of the sons of Benjamin were

Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Hodaviah, the son of Hassenuah;

8 Ibneiah the son of Jeroham; Elah the son of Uzzi, the son of Mikri;

Meshullam the son of Shephatiah, the son of Reuel, the son of Ibnijah;

9 and their brothers according to their generations, 956.

All these men were heads of families according to their fathers' houses.

10 Those of the priests were Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jakin;

11 (Ne 11:11) Azariah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam,

the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub,

the head official of the house of God;

12 Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pashhur, the son of Malkijah;

Maasai the son of Adiel, the son of Jahzerah, the son of Meshullam,

the son of Meshillemith, the son of Immer;

13 and their brothers, heads of the houses of their fathers, 1760

very able men for the work of the service of the house of God.

14 Those of the Levites were Shemaiah the son of Hasshub,

the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, of the sons of Merari;

15 (Ne 11:22) Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal, and Mattaniah the son of Mika,

the son of Zikri, the son of Asaph;

16 Obadiah the son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun;

Berekiah the son of Asa, the son of Elkanah,

who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.

17 Now the gatekeepers were Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman,

and their brothers (Shallum was the head officer

18 (Eze 46:1-2) who until then had served at the king's eastern gate).

They were the gatekeepers for the camps of the Levites.

19 Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah,

and his brothers from his father's house, the Korahites,

were over the work of the service, gatekeepers of the tabernacle.

Their fathers had been over the camp of the Lord, guards at the entrance.

20 Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the official over them in previous times,

and the Lord was with him.

21 (1Ch 26:14; 26:2) Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was gatekeeper

at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

22 (1Sa 9:9) All those chosen as gatekeepers were two hundred and twelve.

They were registered by their genealogy in their villages. Now David

and Samuel the seer established them in their trusted offices.

23 So they and their sons were in charge of the gates of the house

of the Lord, that is, the house of the tabernacle, as guards.

24 The gatekeepers were on four sides: east, west, north, and south.

25 (2Ki 11:5; 2Ch 23:8) Their brothers in their villages were to come

for seven days from time to time to serve with them.

26 For in their trusted offices the four main gatekeepers who were

Levites had charge over the chambers and treasuries of the house of God.

27 They spent the night around the house of God, for the watch

was entrusted to them, and they were responsible for opening it every morning.

28 Some of them were in charge of the vessels of service, that they should

bring them in and out by number.

29 (1Ch 23:29) Some others were appointed over the furnishings

and all the implements of the sanctuary as well as the fine flour, the wine,

the oil, the frankincense, and the spices.

30 (Ex 30:23-25) And some of the sons of the priests mixed the ointment

of the spices.

31 (1Ch 9:19; 9:22) Mattithiah, one of the Levites (he was the firstborn of

Shallum the Korahite), was entrusted with making the flat cakes.

32 (Lev 24:5-8) Others of the sons of the Kohathites and from their brothers

were given charge over the showbread to prepare it every Sabbath.

33 (1Ch 6:31-33; 25:1-31) Now these are the singers, heads of the fathers'

houses of the Levites, who stayed in the temple chambers, free from

other service, because they were occupied with the work day and night.

34 These were the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites according

to their generations, leaders, who dwelt in Jerusalem.

The Genealogy of Saul

1Ch 8:28-38

35 Now Jeiel the father of Gibeon,

whose wife’s name was Maakah, dwelt in Gibeon.

36 His firstborn son was Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab,

37 Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth.

38 Mikloth became the father of Shimeam. These also dwelt in Jerusalem

with their own families near their brothers.

39 (1Sa 13:22) Ner became the father of Kish; Kish the father of Saul;

Saul the father of Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab, and Esh-Baal.

40The son of Jonathan was Merib-Baal, and Merib-Baal

became the father of Micah.

41 (1Ch 8:35) The sons of Micah were Pithon, Melek, Tahrea, and Ahaz.

42 () 1Ch 8:36Ahaz became the father of Jarah,

and Jarah the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri.

Zimri became the father of Moza,

43 (1Ch 8:37) and Moza became the father of Binea, Rephaiah his son,

Eleasah his son, and Azel his son.

44 Azel had six sons, and these were their names:

Azrikam, Bokeru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan.

These were the sons of Azel.

1 CHRONICLES 10

The Death of Saul

1Sa 31:1-13; 2Sa 1:4-12

1 (1Sa 31:1-13; 1Ch 10:8) Now when the Philistines fought against Israel,

every Israelite fighter fled before the Philistines, and the slain fell

on Mount Gilboa.

2 But the Philistines pursued Saul and his sons and struck down Saul's sons

Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua.

3 As the battle with Saul became heavy, the archers' bows found their target

and mortally wounded him.

4 (1Sa 31:4) So Saul said to his armor bearer, "Draw your sword and pierce me

through lest these uncircumcised Philistines come and make a fool of me."

But his armor bearer was unwilling to do it because he was overwhelmed

with fear, so Saul took the sword and fell on it himself.

5 When the armor bearer saw that Saul was dead,

he too fell on his sword and died.

6 Thus, Saul and his three sons, namely all his house, died together.

7 Now when all the children of Israel in the valley saw that they had fled

the battlefield, and Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities

and escaped, leaving the Philistines to come and dwell in them.

8 The next day, when the Philistines came to pillage the slain,

they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

9 So they stripped Saul, removed his head and his armor,

and circulated the news of his demise throughout the land of the Philistines

to their idols as well as the people.

10 Then they placed his armor in the temple of their gods, while his head

they impaled in the house of Dagon.

11 Now all Jabesh Gilead heard about everything the Philistines did to Saul,

12 so their valiant men rose up and carried the body of Saul and the bodies

of his sons to Jabesh. They buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh

and fasted, mourning seven days.

13 (Lev 19:31; 20:6) So Saul died because of his unfaithful

deeds against the Lord,

because of his failure to keep the word of the Lord, and because he sought

to consult a spirit of divination

14 (1Sa 15:28; 13:14) but did not seek the Lord. So He killed him and turned

the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

Psalm 116:1–7

PSALMS 116

1 I love the Lord, because He has heard my voice

and my supplications.

2 (Ps 63:1; 84:2) Because He has inclined His ear to me,

therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.

3 (Ps 79:10; 80:5) The cords of death encircled me,

and the pains of Sheol took hold ofme;

I found trouble and sorrow.

4 (Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8) Then called I upon the name of the Lord:

"O Lord, I plead with You, deliver my soul."

5 (Ps 42:11; 43:5) Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;

indeed, our God is merciful.

6 (2Sa 17:22; Dt 3:8-9) The Lord protects the simple;

I was brought low, and He helped me.

7 (Ps 88:7; Jnh 2:3) Return to your rest, O my soul;

for the Lord has vindicated you.

"Daddy, will you read to me?" my daughter asked. It's not an unusual question

for a child to make of a parent. But my daughter is eleven now. These days,

such requests are fewer than they were when she was younger. "

“Yes," I said happily, and she curled up next to me on the couch.

As I read to her (from The Fellowship of the Ring), she practically melted

into me. It was one of those glorious moments as a parent, when we feel

perhaps just an inkling of the perfect love our Father has for us and

His deep desire for us to "cuddle in" to His presence and love.

I realized in that moment that I'm a lot like my eleven-year-old.

Much of the time, I’m focused on being independent. It's so easy to lose

touch with God's love for us, a tender and protective love that Psalm 116

describes as "gracious and righteous . . . full of compassion" (v. 5).

It's a love where, like my daughter, I can curl up in God's lap,

at home in His delight for me.

Psalm 116:7 suggests that we might need to regularly remind

ourselves of God's good love, and then crawl up into His waiting arms:

“Return to your rest, O my soul, for the Lord has vindicated you.”

And indeed, He has.

Reflect & Pray

When was the last time you rested quietly in God's love?

What barriers, if any, might keep you from experiencing

the Father's delight for you?

Father, thank You for Your perfect love for me.

Help me to remember that love and to rest in Your goodness and delight in me.

Week 4 - The Blessings of Grace Day 4 - freedom from Fear

Psalms 27:1

The Lord is my light and my salvation;

whom will I fear?

The Lord is the strength of my life;

of whom will I be afraid?

Marcy was afraid of the dark. As a child she slept with a nightlight on,

and even she matured, she still had a fear of dark places.

When she was at home alone, she kept all the lights on,

and a small lamp at her bedside glowed through the night.

The psalmist David reflects that common fear of darkness when he says

"The Lord is my light and my salvation - whom shall I fear?"

David does not say, "The Lord brings light," but "The Lord is my light".

God is the source of understanding and security in our lives.

He is the One who can expose and deal with our fears.

When we are afraid - afraid of losing a job or a loved one,

afraid of making mistakes, afraid of being hurt, afraid of what others may

say about us - we can turn to the Lord who can handle our fears.

He is a "stronghold", a fortress of protection around us,

and in him we are safe.

Often we turn to other places for our security - to the bank account,

to a spouse or loved one, to the approval of the world.

We mistakenly think that these sources can provide a foundation of defence

against uncertainty of life. But when we find that people disappoint us, money l

oses its value, and the praise of others is fleeting,

we must turn again to the true source of security, God alone.

Application

a) What sources of security have I trusted in besides God?

What was the result of that trust?

b) In what ways have I depended upon God for my security?

4) Prosperity verses from Kenneth Copeland

Joshua 1:8

8 (Ps 19:14; 119:15) This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth.

Meditate on it day and night so that you may act carefully according to all

that is written in it. For then you will make your way successful,

and you will be wise.

5) From a Book called God's Promises for you:

When you are discouraged or Depressed

Matthew 11: 25-30

25 (Ps 8:2; Jn 11:41) At that time Jesus said, "I thank You, O Father,

Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things

from the wise and prudent and revealed them to infants.

26 Even so, Father, for it seemed good in Your sight.

27 (Jn 10:15; Mt 28:18; Jn 1:18) "All things are delivered to Me

by My Father, and no one knows the Son, except the Father.

And no one knows the Father, except the Son and he to whom

the Son will reveal Him.

28 (Jn 7:37; 6:37) "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavily

burdened, and I will give you rest.

29 (Jer 6:16; Jn 13:15) Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me.

For I am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(Jer 6:16).

30 (1Jn 5:3) For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light."

The Lord's prayer

Matthew 6:9-13

9 "Therefore pray in this manner:

Our Father who is in heaven,

hallowed be Your name.

10 (Mt 3:2; 4:17) Your kingdom come;

Your will be done

on earth, as it is in heaven.

11 (Pr 30:8; Isa 33:16) Give us this day our daily bread.

12 (Ex 34:7; Ps 32:1) And forgive us our debts,

as we forgive our debtors.

13 (1Co 10:13; Jn 17:15) And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."

Quick facts on Muslims in Manitoba

Saskatchewan 2015 population 1 282 000

est Muslim Population 21 349

CNMM Networks: Winnipeg

The Muslim population of Manitoba, understandably centred in Winnipeg, is very

diverse and represents some 48 different cultural and ethinic backgrounds.

Conservative estimates put their number at 21000 , with some suggesting

it might be twice that size.

Some outreach among Muslims has started, yet in comparison to the size

of this community, there is the need and opportunity for far more engagement.

Continued influx of new immigrants and refugees continues to see the growth

of this Muslim centre in Manitoba.

We rejoice in the Arabic fellowship meeting there and the energetic workers

among Muslims in Winnipeg.

Let us intercede in unity for:

- new Christian workers among Manitoba's growing Muslim population

- new church ministries focused on prayer, equipping and reaching Muslim

communities around them, as well as training new workers

- the Arabic fellowship and their ministries of discipiling new Muslim

background believers and for effectiveness in outreach

- for the recent Somali woman who found faith in Jesus and stood her ground

in the face of opposition to her new faith.

- for current workers among Muslims to be blessed, refreshed and encouraged

with great support

BAY-AREA AFGHANS

CHRISTIANS REACH OUT TO PEOPLE FLEEING DECADES OF WAR

Afghans first came to the San Francisco Bay area in the late 1970s

after the Russian invasion. They kept coming through years of civil wars

and the 20 years of American and NATO fighting. Now, the Bay Area is home

to more than 60 000 Afghan immigrants and refugees.

Some of the new arrivals were well-educated and secular Muslims.

They were leaders in business and education and have assimilated

into American life. Others were widows and children with a limited

understanding of English, a lack of education, and minimal financial

resources. These Afghans often struggle with housing, language

and job skills, and chronic illness. Still others were translators who

assisted the U.S. military and desperately sought asylum.

Many of these Afghans could benefit from mental health services

to treat their war trauma. Having endured decades of war and tribalism,

Afghans understandably struggle with trusting others, but many seem

comfortable engaging with their Western neighbors.

A core group of Christians in the Bay Area has reached out to their Afghan

neighbors with the love of Christ for more than 15 years. Mike, an Afghan

pastor in the Bay Area, disciples groups of Afghans throughout California

and spends hours each day reaching Afghans worldwide through Facebook.

Mike is grateful that Afghans responded to the Gospel in such positive ways.

But he prays that God will send more workers to connect with more Afghans,

many of whom still remain in touch with family and friends back home.

Pray that Afghan war victims will heal from their trauma.

Pray that local churches will extend hospitality and resources

to the Afghan community.

Ask God to grant wisdom and courage to Mike and other Afghan

believers as they share Jesus with Afghans in California and Afghanistan.
