Hi,

Will people with FrontPage 2000 (and maybe even FP98) be able to work with an Apache webserver under Linux when I install the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions!? Is it downwards compatible!?

And the other way around: when I install the FP2000 extensions, will be people with FP2002 be able to use them?

Greetings

I recently changed hosting providers for my domain. I had a FP Discussion Web in a subweb off the main web, and now it does not work correctly. When posting an article to the Discussion Web it does not seem to know that other posts have been made. (i.e.: post goes to _disc/00000001.htm instead of _disc/00000378.htm at it should have) Anyone out there seen this before, or know how to fix this??

i am using apache 1.3.22,php4.0.6,FP ver5.0 all the packages installed successfully. I can publish a FP web into the server without problem. When i try to create an email form with onSubmit="" webbot-action="--WEBBOT-SELF--", the result returns cannot run frontpage server extension in this dir. can anyone tell me what i am missing here? thanks.

Which FrontPage Server Extensions should be used with a Windows 2000 Server?

You can fill out our front page 2000 forms and they will submit to the server. However, we rarely get them...

When I use fpadmcgi.exe I keep getting this in my error log:

File does not exist: /usr/local/frontpage/version5.0/admin-exes/_vti_bin/_vti_adm/1033/IMAGESDIRbluedot.gif

Is the Photo Gallery feature in FrontPage 2002 supported on the Unix platform?

After upgrading from fp2000se to fp2002se, discussion webs and email forms emailing their output in HTML formats are writing/sending the html output on one line. For large discussion webs, this is creating problems when a new post tries to add to a very very long (single) line in the tocproto.htm file.

Likewise, some clients are having email from their forms bounce due to the HTML output line being over 1024 characters long. Certain MDA's are configured to disallow long lines to prevent buffer overflow attacks.

Anyone know of a fix for this?

Many thanks

Where would I look for additional information when I have problems with FrontPage Server Extensions?

I keep getting (1) Saving Form Results to E-Mail will not work unless with the "SMTPHost" or "SendMailCommand" server configuration parameters are set., how do I fix that?

I've tried everything - reinstalling, owsadm.exe -check, and I still can't open my webs with a FrontPage client. What else there to check?

FrontPage 2003 has been announced. How does it interact with the FrontPage 2003 Server Extensions?

What are the changes in SR1.2?

I am currently hosting (non-FP) pages and have someone who is requiring me to support FP2003. If I install your 2002 support on Redhat 9.0, will they be loosing the new features provided in FP2003?

How do I troubleshoot a front page form that is not working

I am trying to upload my site using Front Page and am getting the following error: 404 Not Found. The requested URL /_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.exe was not found on this server. Apache/1.3.29 Server at atlantacarservice.com Port 80, what could this mean?

Hi everyone,

I really need help from someone who has been able to make changes to the Forms that is created with Frontpage in a UNIX platform.

The problem we have is that the Form we use on our website, once they are filled out submitted by the visitor to the site and is sent to other customers who use our service. The From address email is "Username@lunarpages.com" and we don't want that, we want the From Address email to be one that we select by ourselves. Is there a code that we can include in the Frontpage Form or a instruction we can give to our host company on how to do this in their UNIX server that will allow us to change the From Address email. The hosting company told us that we need to find on how to do it and email it to them and then they will do the changes.

Thanks for the help.

Install Questions

When I run owsadm.exe -setadminport 9999 -u username -s /httpd.conf it fails. What should I do instead?

I was wondering... Do you have any sample installations using the fp_install.sh script?

I have already compiled in mod_frontpage when I built the server in the first place, and the module seems to be fine, however, now I don't know what to do to do the rest of the install process to do things like install the root web, listen on ports etc. etc. I have started the install script and its has unpacked all the files to /usr/local/frontpage However the install script quits when I tell it not to replace the currently installed httpd with the stock 1.3.19 one. How can I finish the process manually so I can get Frontpage working? Thanks for all your help in advance!

I have a new install on Linux. It appears that all went well with the install but I can't author anything. When I try to "Publish Web" with FP 2002, I get a username and password box repeatedly. I'm using the admin username and pwd that I typed in when I installed FP2002.

Specifically, I'm seeing this in the log: 192.168.0.18 - - [12/Aug/2001:14:21:31 -0700] "POST /_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.exe HTTP/1.1" 401 264

Everything is owned by apache:apache (uid 504).

This is happening BEFORE I type in the username and password the first time and each subsequent time.

Error 401 means something is not authorized, right?

Is there any way to get more debugging information out of this? I don't have much to work with here.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks for any assistance.

During installation I received the following error: The top-level folder for web is a symbolic link and the 'FollowSymLinks' server configuration is not set. Error / installation failed. What do I need to do?

During installation I received the following error:

Now what?

I'm trying to install the extensions, but I keep getting srm.conf file does not exist (apache 1.3.19). I have checked and the file does exist. I have had the same problem with Frontpage 2000 extensions on 1.3.20. Help.

Where is fp_install.sh?

How does one install a virtual web on port 443 instead of port 80?

I am getting this error message after executing the following:

./owsadm.exe -o install -u fpadm -pw test -s /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf \

-xuser customer -xgroup firm -p 80

Error message is:

Cannot chown content: user customer does not exist.

Cannot chown content: group firm does not exist.

I am getting this error message after executing the following:

./owsadm.exe -o install -u fpadm -pw test -s /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf \

-p 80

Installed FP Extension 2002 on RH Linux 7.1. Run fp_install.sh without choosing root web, sub web and virtual web. But still cannot publish web site to the server. Front Page module seems to be running (checked by httpd -l).

The server you are you are publishing to does not have the Front Page Server Extensions installed and therefore does not support publishing via HTTP.

How do I resolve this issue?

How do I install FrontPage 2002 Server extensions on my apache 1.3.22 server that is already running?

I've installed the frontpage extensions and am almost positive they are in correctly. When I go to publish a web site it asks me for a login and password. Then it tells me that FrontPage extensions aren't installed on the server. How do I test it to make sure. Where is the default directories that everything is kept?

Set up a Unix user where the login begins with a number, e.g. 1coolguy

Set up a virtual host for www.1coolguy.com or something for that user.

Attempt to install frontpage extensions for that virtual host as follows:

'owsadm.exe -o install -u 1coolguy -pw password -p 80 -m

www.1coolguy.com -servconf /path/to/httpd.conf -xu 1coolguy -xg usergroup

View the error message:

Error:

Value "1coolguy" is incorrect.

Syntax error in value of "xuser" parameter.

Why is 1coolguy not valid?

I have many domains in my apache server. I would like to only have 2 use FP extensions. How can this be done?

Every time I run fp_install.sh it fails with ERROR: "/usr/local/apache/htdocs" does not exist. I checked the directory is there. Why can't fp_install.sh find it?

I would like to put a second web server on my Solaris machine and have it use a separate copy of FrontPage Extensions. It will be on a different port and in a different location. I do not want to interfere with the production server that is running. What would be involved with making this happen? Would I have to modify fp_install.sh to point the second copy of the server extensions some place other than /usr/local?

During installation using fp_install.sh I received the following error:

Are you sure that you want to do this (y/n) [N]? y

Upgrading FrontPage Webs...

cp: omitting directory `/etc/httpd/'

ERROR: Unable to copy /etc/httpd/ to /etc/httpd/.orig

ERROR: Unable to upgrade Apache daemon!

Exiting due to an error! Please fix the error and try again.

How do I fix the error?

Using the FP2002 extensions and the owsadm.exe utility I run into the oft mentioned (yet not solved situation) of "Error: Cannot open 'srm.conf': no such file or folder." when running owsadm.exe (Solaris 9, btw).

./owsadm.exe -o install -p www.somehost.com:80 -s /etc/apache/httpd.conf -u thename -pw -xu nobody -xg nobody

What is the solution?

During installation I'm getting "Error: '80' server is not a valid virtual server. How do I install?

The latest download does not support apache 2.0.48 contrary to website message.

Run fp_install to install fp on a server I just install apache 2.0.48 on.

Your site says:

"This release also includes support for Apache 1.3.29 and Apache 2.0.48."

ErrorMessage:

WARNING: The Apache you are running is newer than the one

supported by this kit.

You are running Apache 2.0.48 .

What is the true story?

I have a gentoo box with apache 2.0.49. I have to change some of the names on t

he script to match gentoo file names. But when installing, everything went fine

until the compile step where it game me the error bellow:

In fact there was no apache2 dir under frontpage/version5.0

What I need to fix this?

When I attempt to install the FrontPage Server Extensions for my web site with fp_install.sh or owsadm.exe I get:

installing server / on port 80

Will chown web to apache as part of install.

Will chgrp web to apache as part of install.

Error: '80' server is not a valid virtual server.

ERROR: / installation failed.

How to I resolve this behavior?

Apache

I try to compile a custom server (Apache 1.3.22), following the instructions

on the Microsoft Web Site. But, when I run the ./configure script, it can't

find the mod_frontpage.c module! There isn't on the FrontPage 2002 Server

Extensions Distribution!!

Where I can locate this file?

I am running apache 1.3.22 and am trying to install FrontPage 2002 extension

to it. I copied fp-patch-apache_1.3.19 to fp-patch-apache_1.3.22 . I am trying to apply the patch with the following command patch -p0

Hi. What is the command steps to execute the patch fp-patch-apache_1.3.22.Z

please, and what Directory should it be in? I am running Linux Mandrake 8.2 RC1

and apache version is 1.3.23.

I installed the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions and now my Apache won't start. First it couldn't find the httpd.conf on my system and now it complains. Why?

I have downloaded the frontpage patch, and the extensions, to my computer, but how do I get them to the server?

i downloaded 2002 extensions and installed, they installed fine, but when i start apache now, i get a Syntax error on line 210 of /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf : invalid command 'LoadModule', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration so i comment out line 210, then get the same error for line 211, so i comment out 211 and get the same error for line 212 etc... I checked the modules folder, and the modules its saying it cant load are there, any ideas ?

I've using Redhat 7.1 and it's built with apache, php, mysql, ssl from RPM. How do I do an install?

I have been trying to load frontpage 2002 into my apache 1.3.24 & when i start

apache this is written to my /var/log/httpd/error.log (see below)

[Mon May 20 15:34:51 2002] [error] (2)No such file or directory: Incorrect permissions on key directory "/usr/local/frontpage/version5.0/apache-fp" in FrontPageCheckup(). Until this problem is fixed, the FrontPage security patch is disabled and the FrontPage extensions may not work correctly

Any hints to this would be greatly appreciated

Apache DSO Questions

Does anyone have fp Extensions running on RH 8.0 or 9.0? Spent past week installing/reading/tweaking/trying to make work. About ready to go back to RH 7.0. It should not be this hard to install these. I did it on a 6.1 box a while back worked like a champ. HELP!! Any would be appreciated!!

I've tried installing on my Redhat 8 servers and the fp_install.sh script fails with can't find apxs. Why?

I've installed the extensions on Redhat9 with Apache 2.0.40. The fp_install.sh script ran with no problem. I am still unable to access the web with a FrontPage client. I noticed that the LoadModule line for mod_frontpage was within my directives. What do I need to do?

Back to FAQ

I have other modules compiled in my existing apache daemon. What do I need to do to run the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions?

If you have other modules that you need compiled into Apache then you should manually patch your server prior to installing or upgrading. To install the patch manually, use the following steps:

bullet Untar fp50_platform_tar.Z

bullet Copy the Fp-patch-apache_1.3.x into your Apache server build directory

(usually /usr/local/Apache_1.3.x). The Fp-patch-apache_1.3.x file is found in/usr/local/frontpage/version5.0/apache-fp/fp-patch-apache_1.3.x.

bullet Using the GNU version of the patch utility, run the patch command on the

FrontPage 2002 Apache patch source file:

patch -p0

bullet Configure the server (you should include your modules and mod_frontpage.c)

./configure --add-module=mod_frontpage.c

bullet Build the Apache server: make

bullet Install the server: make Install

When I click on "send an invitation" in the HTML based fpadmcgi.exe, I get the error message: "You cannot enable this feature because your server has not been configured to send mail" What can I do?

You need to configure your webserver to send mail before you can use this feature. This needs to be set up by adding one of the following lines to your we80.cnf file:

SMTPHOST:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

or

SendMailCommand:/path/to/sendmail

Excerpt from the SharePoint document:

Mail settings

Periodically, the server sends e-mail notification or other messages to users of your site or to you, the administrator. You can specify the SMTP mail server to use for these messages. You also can type the From and Reply-to address to use for these messages, and specify which mail encoding option and character set to use in the e-mail messages. Server administrators can change these settings by using the Change Configuration Settings page (in the Virtual Server Administration pages). Web site administrators can also change the From and Reply-to addresses on the Change Web Subscription Settings page (in the Site Administration pages).

Hi, I have an old server running version 3 FP extensions and I want to move my web onto my new server running version 5 FP extensions. I tried manually moving the files and I ran into a bunch of functionality problems. What is the easiest way to make this transition?

The most efficient way to transfer your web on to your new server is to:

bullet Install the extensions on the new server

bullet If you are using straight Apache then you have to install your subwebs too

If you are using Apache with Mod FP then the subs will be created for you

bullet Open up the web in your Front Page Client on the old server

bullet Publish web to the new server

This should take care of any functionality problems.

My forms work fine when I send from port 80. But I receive errors when I attempt to send from port 443. How do I get my secure forms to work?

You need to install the extensions against both ports (80 and 443). You can use owsadm.exe -o install -p 443 -s /path/to/httpd.conf or if your port 443 documentroot is the same as your port 80 documentroot you can simply:

cd /usr/local/frontpage

cp we80.cnf we443.cnf

Make sure ownership/permissions of we443.cnf matches we80.cnf ownership and permissions.

Greetings

The Server Extensions are backwardly compatible.

Folks with FP2002 publishing against a FP2000 enabled web will not be able to use and of the new functions. For more information check out the product guide or knowledgebase.

In order for you to have the relocated web resume postings at the correct count, you need to edit the /_vti_pvt/service.cnf and change the vti_disc_articlenumber setting to the correct number.

Sample:

/www/content/_vti_pvt/service.cnf

vti_disc_articlenumber:IX|378

Please note: you may have to have your ISP make the change if you do not have access to the _vti_pvt directory.

You can fill out our front page 2000 forms and they will submit to the server. However, we rarely get them...

If your ISP has set up your web correctly, with either SendMailCommand or SMTPHost in your FrontPage config file (hostname:80.cnf), then they should be able to look in the system logs file for why you aren't always getting the results.

While waiting form them to resolve this issue you may want to change your forms to both send you mail and store the results in to file. You can then use your FrontPage client to view this file.

From your Client: Open the Form Page, and go to form properties

FormProperties

Sendto: _private/results

Email: user@hostname.com

Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Show hidden files and folders

apply

Then you should be able to view the information stored in _private/results.

How do I install FrontPage 2002 Server extensions on my apache 1.3.22 server that is already running?

If you are already running Apache 1.3.22 you need to confirm that your daemon has the mod_frontpage patch applied. You can do this by running httpd -l and grepping the results for mod_frontpage. If your daemon is patched, then run fp_install.sh and answer the questions appropriately for your system. During installation your httpd was moved to httpd.orig and the daemon which shipped with the FPSEs was copied to httpd. You can simply replace httpd with httpd.orig.

cd httpd.orig

mv httpd.orig httpd

Then restart your daemon.

If your 1.3.22 Apache does not have mod_frontpage you will need to download the Apache source code, download the frontpage patch and recompile.

Syntax error in value of "xuser" parameter.

Why is 1coolguy not valid?

While 1coolguy may be a valid UNIX user on your system on many systems (the extensions must support 8 different versions of UNIX), this is not a valid UNIX user on all platforms. From the Solaris documentation:

"User names, also called login names, let users access their own systems and remote systems that have the appropriate access privileges. You must choose a user name for each user account you create. User names must:

bullet Be unique within your organization, which might span multiple domains

bullet Contain from two to eight letters and numerals (the first character must be a letter and at least one character must be a lowercase letter)

bullet Not contain an underscore or space "

I have many domains in my apache server. I would like to only have 2 use FP extensions. How can this be done?

You need to enable the extensions on only those domains which require them. You can use fp_install.sh and select only those domains (VirtualWebs) that you want to have the extensions or you can use owsadm.exe and specify which domains. Check the SharePoint Documentation.

owsadm.exe -o install -s -u -pw -xu -xg -m

Every time I run fp_install.sh it fails with ERROR: "/usr/local/apache/htdocs" does not exist. I checked the directory is there. Why can't fp_install.sh find it?

fp_install.sh has a problem with the quotes "'s in your httpd.conf file. If you removed them from the DocumentRoot directive it should work.

DocumentRoot "/usr/local/apache/htdocs"

to

DocumentRoot /usr/local/apache/htdocs

I would like to put a second web server on my Solaris machine and have it use a separate copy of FrontPage Extensions. It will be on a different port and in a different location. I do not want to interfere with the production server that is running. What would be involved with making this happen? Would I have to modify fp_install.sh to point the second copy of the server extensions some place other than /usr/local?

You don't need to have 2 separate copies of the FrontPage Server Extensions. You can simple place your test web on a different port and have it's document root in a different place than your production server. The FrontPage Server Extensions require placement in /usr/local/frontpage or a link to that directory.

How do I fix the error?

You need to give the full path to the apache deamon, not just which directory it is in. Instead of /etc/httpd you probably need to use /usr/httpd/sbin/httpd. You can use the system find to locate your Apache daemon.

The solution for Apache 2 webs is:

When installing the FrontPage Server Extensions for an Apache 2.0 web the commands are:

Root web:

owsadm.exe -o install -t apache-2.0 -p 80 -s /etc/apache/httpd.conf -u -pw

-ux nobody -xg nogroup

Virtual Web:

owsadm.exe -o install -t apache-2.0 -p 80 -s /etc/apache/httpd.conf -u -pw

-xu nobody -xg nobody -m www.somehost.name

The solution for Apache 1.3 webs is to add

ResourceConfig /dev/null

AccessConfig /dev/null

to your httpd.conf file prior to running owsadm.exe. (Please note that the -t variable for Apache 1.3 webs is apache-fp.)

By Richard Clarke at Emirates Stadium

It was the end of an era and the start of another.

Arsenal Football Club played their first game at their new home on Saturday but, alas, it was a farewell testimonial for Dennis Bergkamp

After 11 years, 423 games, 120 goals and millions of wonderful memories, it was time for this exceptionally talented footballer to hang up his boots. Only something massive and memorable would be good enough to rightly reflect his impact on Arsenal Football Club and fortunately this occasion fitted the bill perfectly. The ground, the atmosphere and the legendary level of the players involved were just right.

Emirates Stadium was limited to 54,000, around 6,000 below capacity, but the demand for tickets had been incredible. Specially-made T-shirts were left on the seats as they had been for the final game at Highbury so the ground was a sea of red, white and orange when the stadium was formally opened with a small ceremony 45 minutes before kick-off.

At the start of the game, the current squads of Ajax and Arsenal came out and formed a guard of honour for Bergkamp, along with his family, to walk out and wave their hello’s. The goodbyes would be for later.

Dennis’ father Wim ceremonially kicked off the match and the first few flicks were exchanged by three generations of Bergkamps with 10-year-old Mitchell playing a role.

This would be a proper game of two halves. The first 45 minutes was current Arsenal v current Ajax. The second 45 minutes would be Arsenal Legends v Ajax Legends. In truth no one would care about the result as long as Bergkamp got a goal.

The current Arsenal was shorn of the vast majority of its World Cup players. Alex Hleb, Mathieu Flamini and Pascal Cygan provided the bulk of the experience. The visitors, backed by a few thousand fans in the south-east corner of the ground, captured the early initiative.

In the ninth minute Klaas Jan Huntelaar unleashed a shot that Manuel Almunia fisted wide from the corner, Hedwiges Maduro steered a header around the post.

On the quarter-hour Arsenal got their first chance. Armand Traore had already produced a couple of thumping challenges. The left back impressed further when he got to the by-line and cut the ball back for Jeremie Aliadiere to swivel on the six-yard box and fire off a shot that Maarten Stekelenburg held high above his head.

A few minutes later Hleb’s pull-back allowed Bergkamp to go for one of his famous chips. For once it drifted just over the bar.

The game did not really match the occasion after that with neither side creating much in front of goal. Eight minutes before the break, Edgar Manucharyan found some space on the left and cross the near post where the leaping Hunterlaar volley past Mart Poom. A minute later the Estonian keeper did just enough to stop the unmarked Manucharyan adding a second.

At the break ex-Arsenal keeper Bob Wilson announced the Legends team for the second half. Ajax included Frank Rijkaard, Jan Wouters, Wim Jonk, the De Boer brothers, Edgar Davids and Edwin van der Sar in their side. Johan Cryuff was their manager. Arsenal included Thierry Henry, David Seaman, Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn, Patrick Vieira, Ian Wright, Steve Bould, Marc Overmars, Edu, Ray Parlour, Kanu and Emmanuel Petit. The stars truly had come out to honour Bergkamp.

Eight minutes in the second half, Arsenal equalised. Bergkamp fed Dixon on the right, who floated a cross to the near post as he had throughout the ‘90s at Highbury. Henry latched on to it, held off his marker and side-footed a shot past Van der Sar from close range.

Arsenal now had the upperhand. Gilles Grimandi sprayed a perfect long ball to Overmars and the little winger cut inside to thump a drive into Van der Sar’s chest.

Just past the hour, Davids burst through and flicked the ball past Seaman. All he had to do was tap the ball into the net but Grimandi raced up and brought him down. Given that the ex-Tottenham midfielder had been getting so playful stick from the crowd ever since he came on, this was a very popular move. However justice was not served when Ronald de Boer hoofed the penalty over the bar.

With 10 minutes left, the crowd was sprung two surprises. Ajax brought on two players from whom the word ‘legend’ is not good enough — Johan Cryuff and Marco van Basten.

The latter showed his class almost immediately, flicking the ball over the head of Bould at the near post and forcing a fine one-handed save out of Alex Manninger.

Ian Wright hit the sidenetting then, in the final minute, Kanu darted inside and saw his shot deflect off Jaap Stam and beat keeper Stanley Menzo at the near post for the winning goal.

All we needed now was a Bergkamp goal. It almost came with the last kick of the match but Menzo saved with his legs.

After the final whistle, Bergkamp received a special presentation from the chairman of Arsenal and the board of Ajax. He said a few words to the crowd, did a lap of honour and was lifted on to the shoulders of the Legends.

With that, and a fanfare of fireworks, Bergkamp’s career ended.

Some players elicit admiration, some provide inspiration, a precious few can do both. But this man was one of them. His cast-iron technique was forged on the youth team training ground at Ajax and his steely character developed at Inter but his best years will always belong to Arsenal.

And we were so, so lucky to have him.

Bergkamp given rousing farewell

Dennis Bergkamp cradles daughter Yasmin

It was a family day for Bergkamp as he said his footballing farewells

Dennis Bergkamp bowed out of football on a entertaining, celebratory opening day at Arsenal's new Emirates Stadium.

A sell-out crowd revelled in seeing some of the club's greats play in a second-half Legends match against Bergkamp's first club, Dutch side Ajax.

Ian Wright, Emmanuel Petit, Patrick Vieira and Marc Overmars were some of the names to return for the Gunners.

And 59-year-old Johan Cruyff and Holland manager Marco van Basten came on for Ajax in the last 10 minutes.

Ajax's Dutch international striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar had the honour of scoring the first goal at the 60,000 capacity stadium in a first half in which the clubs sent out a host of youngsters for a regulation pre-season run-out.

Huntelaar went close on a couple of occasions before turning in Edgar Manucharyan's low, flat cross from the left.

After the break the girths were a little wider and the legs, in some cases, a bit slower than in their heyday as a new match began between two teams of legends.

But it was Arsenal's only present day player on show who gave the hosts the lead.

It's difficult to say goodbye

Dennis Bergkamp

Thierry Henry, having chartered a private jet to fly back from a family holiday in the USA for the match, converted Lee Dixon's cross to the delight of the home fans.

And after Ronald De Boer blazed a penalty over following Gilles Grimandi's foul on Tottenham's Edgar Davids - the day's pantomime villain, Kanu's deflected shot made it two to Arsenal.

He may not have scored, despite being put through one-on-one on the right in the closing minutes, but the day was all about one man and Bergkamp was given a rousing send off.

"If I was to have a testimonial it was always going to be against Ajax and their fans have put in a lot of effort to come here," he said in an emotional speech after the final whistle when he gave thanks to one and all.

"My mum and dad were always there from the beginning and have probably seen every game.

"And my wife has been amazing over the years. You can't do a career like this alone and if it wasn't for her I would not be here.

"It's difficult to say goodbye. I've had a fantastic time over the last 11 years and a big part were the fans and how they treated me - they have been fantastic."

Bergkamp was carried shoulder high during a lap of honour by Vieira and Henry - Arsenal captains past and present.

It was applauded long and loud by the legends on the pitch as well as the crowd who have marvelled at his Arsenal displays for the last 11 years during which he has scored 120 goals in 423 games.

And look at BBC remembers Bergkamp the Footballer

COnservatives under fire for spending.

Re: Improper Treatment of Delegate Fees for Conservative Party of Canada Conventions

Dear Sirs:

We wish to bring to your attention that the Conservative Party of Canada may be treating delegate registration fees to its functions improperly and in contravention of the Canada Elections Act and the Income Tax Act. We ask that you investigate what, if true, would include millions of dollars of unreported and undisclosed contributions to the Conservative Party of Canada.

Delegate Registration Fees:

We understand that the Conservative Party has not treated any portion of delegate registration fees as a contribution to the Conservative Party and, therefore, has not issued income tax receipts or receipts required under the Canada Elections Act for any portion of such delegate registration fees. Hon. John Baird, Treasury Board President, indicated publicly that this was the case with regard to the 2005 Conservative Party annual convention. This was confirmed in subsequent media reports which included statements by the Conservative Party itself. They further stated that this practice had been ongoing for some time, implying that this possible contravention has occurred numerous times.

We further understand that since the Conservative Party of Canada has not recorded any portion of the delegate registration fees as a contribution, then accordingly, they may have misstated contribution information of the Conservative Party of Canada (or its predecessor parties) in public filings as required to be made by all registered political parties.

While a delegate may receive some value in materials and services for his or her registration fee, it is highly unlikely that such value amounts to the entire delegate registration fee at the current levels of such a fee. Whether or not the function involved results in a financial surplus is irrelevant as it is the calculation of the value received by the delegate in exchange for his or her registration fee that determines whether the person paying the delegate registration fee has made a contribution to the Conservative Party of Canada and, if so, the amount of such contribution. In not issuing a receipt for the amount of the delegate registration fee that is a contribution to the Conservative Party of Canada there may have been what I am certain you will agree is an egregious violation of the Canada Elections Act.

Possible Excess Contributions:

Further, as the Conservative Party of Canada did not issue receipts for the contribution portion of delegate or observer registration fees it could not track the total contributions of an individual delegate or observer in the year during which the function was held to ensure that total did not exceed the maximum contribution allowed pursuant to the Canada Elections Act. Accordingly, it is quite possible that a person who paid delegate or observer registration fees exceeded the allowable contribution limits under the Canada Elections Act.

We would, therefore, ask you to investigate the refusal of the Conservative Party of Canada to recognize contributions by persons who paid delegate and observer registration fees, issue receipts to such persons and treat such payments as contributions.

Yours very truly,

Steven MacKinnon

Re: Improper Treatment of Observer Registration Fees for Conservative Party of Canada Conventions

Dear Sirs:

We wish to bring to your attention that the Conservative Party of Canada may be treating observer registration fees to its conventions improperly and in contravention of the Canada Elections Act and possibly, the Income Tax Act. Specifically, we believe that the Conservative Party of Canada may have accepted prohibited contributions from corporations and/or associations.

Observer Registration Fees:

The situation with regard to observer registration fees is the same as for delegate registration fees, referred to in a letter sent to you today under separate cover. Some portion of the observer registration fee must, we believe, be considered a contribution to the Conservative Party of Canada and should have been shown in a receipt issued by the Conservative Party of Canada and included as a contribution in financial returns made by the Conservative Party of Canada.

We further understand that some observer registration fees paid to the Conservative Party of Canada were paid by corporations. If that is correct, such corporations have made a contribution to the Conservative Party of Canada in the amount of the observer registration fee that is in excess of the value received by the observer attending the function. Such a corporate contribution to the Conservative Party of Canada is prohibited by the Canada Elections Act. However, the Conservative Party of Canada specifically invited such contributions in its convention registration literature.

I would therefore ask you to investigate whether the Conservative Party of Canada received prohibited contributions from corporations and/or associations who paid observer registration fees.

Yours very truly,

Steven MacKinnon

Harper looks bad in Middle East crisis

FRom The Liberal Party of Canada:

Conservatives Ignored Pending Crisis in the Middle East

July 20, 2006

Ottawa – The bungled Lebanese evacuation is a direct result of the Conservative government’s desire to keep warnings of a pending crisis in the Middle East under wraps, Liberal Consular Affairs Critic Dan McTeague said today.

“The Harper government has once again put politics ahead of policy and the people of this country. By ignoring warnings of the pending crisis for political reasons, the government lost a valuable window of opportunity to evacuate Canadians in a timely fashion. This inept interference and ensuing delays have resulted in a badly botched evacuation that has failed Canadians and left them to endure difficult circumstances and unnecessary threats to their safety,” said Mr. McTeague.

According to media reports, Foreign Affairs staff realized an emergency was brewing in the region last week that would affect tens of thousands of Canadians, but an edict handed down from the Prime Minister’s office ordered the situation be kept confidential.

Since the crisis broke, eight Canadians in Lebanon have been killed in the conflict. There have been widespread reports of confusion and inaction at the Canadian embassy and delays in arranging ships to carry people to safety.

Only one of seven chartered vessels managed to collect any Canadians on Wednesday, and only 261 of about 2,000 Canadians who were supposed to have been evacuated in the first wave actually made it out.

Officials in the region attribute the catastrophic delays to the Prime Minister’s centralized command and communications policies dictating all decisions be routed through Ottawa – a practice both impractical and painfully slow due to the six time zones between locations.

“While other countries were already evacuating their citizens on Sunday, the Conservative government spent two days discussing the matter before any calls were made – this inaction is unacceptable, and Canadians still stranded in Lebanon are paying the price,” said Mr. McTeague.

And again from The Liberal Party of Canada :

Liberals Call For A More Balanced Approach from Canada

July 18, 2006

Prime Minister Stephen Harper must move away from his hard-line position on the Middle East crisis in favor of one which enables Canada to maintain its historic role as a bridge builder in the region, Liberal Leader Bill Graham said today.

“We're very concerned about Mr. Harper's change in Canada’s traditional position of working with all sides in the Middle East for long-term peace by being able to work with all sides of the conflict to bring them together and in a dialogue,” Mr. Graham said. “Canada has always been able to act as an intermediary, but we can only serve in that capacity if both our comportment and our actions enable us to play that role.”

Mr. Graham urged Prime Minister Harper to look to the G-8 communique as a starting point for a balanced approach to help all parties in the region come together.

“Israelis have always thanked us for the moderating role we have been able to play,” he said. “Therefore I urge the government not to take actions which will eliminate the possibility to build peaceful coalitions.”

Mr. Graham explained that the government has a responsibility to take into account the larger geopolitical issues in the Middle East when establishing Canadian foreign policy.

“What is presently taking place in Lebanon is destabilizing the possibility of a democratic government there and I think Canada should be expressing a greater concern about that element if, in fact, we want to be able to help Israel and help the region return to peace,” he said.“We will not be able to be helpful in the long run to Israel or to anyone else in the region if we do not recognize the complexity of the factors at play here. “Mr. Harper has to get a better hold on what Canada is trying to achieve.”

Mr. Graham also echoed the concerns of many Canadians that the government has been too slow in evacuating the thousands of Canadian citizens stranded in Lebanon.

Mr. Graham pointed to the fact that Great Britain, France and the United States have already begun the evacuation process, while Foreign Affairs Minister Peter McKay stated Canadians would not be able to begin exiting Lebanon until mid-week.

“Our officials at Foreign Affairs work around the clock and are dedicated to help people exit the region, but they have to be given the given the facilities and the capacity to act,” he said. “Other countries have moved more quickly to get that capacity. I don’t see why it would be any more difficult for us than for them.”

Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay told reporters yesterday that Canada has been working on an evacuation plan for Canadians in Lebanon for "close to a week," but has kept the planning secret for security reasons.

But for many Canadians in Lebanon, one of the few sources of information is relatives back in Canada.

Many Lebanese-Canadians have expressed frustration that the government chose not to take advantage of these unofficial lines of communications and make details of their plan for evacuating Canadians available to the public as soon as possible.

Liberal Consular Affairs Critic Dan McTeague agreed with this criticism.

“It is unacceptable and a dereliction of responsibility for Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay to talk about an evacuation only after eight Canadians had been killed,” he said.

As Liberals, we are disappointed with Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s decision to depart from Canada’s traditional role of peace broker and follow U.S. President Bush’s Mideast policy prior to the release of the joint statement by G-8 leaders. But right now Canada’s number one job should be to ensure the safety of Canadians by getting them home as quickly as possible.

Peace can only be obtained on the foundation of respect for the security, well-being and legitimacy of the states and peoples of Israel, Palestine and Lebanon. We must all continue to work toward an end to any government sanctioned incitement to hatred and violence, and the condemnation of terrorism from whatever quarter for whatever purpose.

Harper's Policies on Foreign affairs should be Canadian Unique NOT USA scripted. He will

find a major Multicultural rebelion on his hands.

WC 2006 Cup Game France Vs Italy

From Benny of Soccer-europe:

9 July 2006

ITALY 1-1 FRANCE

Materazzi 18 Zidane 6 (Pen)

In the 6th minute Malouda made the most of Materazzi's clumsy challenge to win

a penalty. Zidane took one step forward then chipped the ball against the

underside of the crossbar and fortunately for him and France it bounced over the

line. Materazzi, who was clearly rattled, almost doubled France's lead with a

poor header which had Buffon scrambling at his past. Italy began to take

control and equalised when Materazzi punished abysmal marking in the French box

to head in Pirlo's corner. From a throw-on Gattuso burst past two players before

giving the ball to Totti, Totti rode a tackle from Vieira as he ran inside the

box, Gattuso fed the ball to Toni and just as he shot Thuram slid in to clear.

That was the one moment of magic Italy provided in the entire match. From the

resulting corner Toni headed against the underside of the crossbar.

At the start of the second half Henry gathered a loose ball, ran through

Gattuso's tackle and darted between two defenders in the box but hit a weak shot

with Buffon easily saved. Pirlo flashed a free kick just wide of Barthez's left

post.

A fabulous move in which the French strung together 11 passes ended with Ribery

cutting inside Iaquinta and sliding a ball through to Malouda, who was flattened

by Cannavaro's heavy tackle from behind on the edge of the box, Ribery gathered

possession and a subtle feint took him clear of De Rossi but he dragged his shot

wide of a post. Seconds later he made way for Trezeguet. Another wonderfully

constructed move started with Gallas intercepting a Iaquinta pass and giving the

ball to Zidane, who was deep in his own half. The ball was worked down the right

through Zidane before he eventually passed out wide to Sagnol and ran into the

box where he met the defenders cross with a fantastic header which was matched

by Buffon's spectacular one handed save.

Early in the second half Wiltord came on for Henry who appeared to be struggling

with a minor knock. In an incident which will go down in World Cup infamy,

Zidane was sent off for head-butting Materazzi in the chest after the two

exchanged words when walking away from the Italy penalty area. This was similar

to the Rooney mess in that the ref missed the incident but on the advice of one

of the officials took action, well we assume that's what happened. In any case

it was a deserved red card and a sad way for Zidane to bring an end to a

glittering career. Despite their numerical advantage Italy couldn't put together

any meaningful attacks and the game went to penalties but without Zidane,

Henry and Vieira, who went off injured mid-way through the second half, the odds

were in Italy's favour.

Penalty Shoot-Out

Pirlo hits the ball high straight down the middle, awful penalty but Barthez

goes the wrong way

Wiltord blasts the ball into the bottom right corner, perfect penalty

Materazzi copies Wiltord by smashing the ball into the bottom right corner

Trezeguet crashes the ball against the underside of the crossbar

De Rossi. CRACKERJACK, top left corner, no chance for Barthez

Abidal sends the ball left of centre at a perfect height for Buffon who once

again dives early

Del Piero. I sure as hell thought he'd miss but he didn't thanks largely to

Barthez diving early

Sagnol hits the ball with extreme prejudice, poor height, poor placement, poor

goalkeeping, Buffon has been useless in this shoot-out

Grosso. Championship point. Top right corner, unstoppable. Great penalty

France were as good in the second half and extra-time as Italy were in the

first. The game was played at a painfully slow pace. Toni dived more in 120

minutes than Cristiano Ronaldo has in his last three matches. Pirlo reverted to

type i.e. kept giving the ball away, Totti was beyond useless and Cannavaro

didn't look anywhere near as assured as he has done in previous matches. Good

job Gattuso was off the charts, as he has been all tournament. IMO Malouda was

France's best player. Nothing Materazzi said can excuse Zidane's headbutt.

Zidane is no stranger to red cards.

France were the better side on the day but in the 2002 European Championship

final they came away with the silverware having been outplayed. What goes

around, comes around.

Italy survived the group of death, survived a cheap red card against Australia

(and got the break of a last second penalty) before crushing Ukraine and beating

an excellent Germany side in the game of the tournament. France peaked last

week, with their excellent victories over Spain and Brazil. It would have sucked

had they won the World Cup on the back of two dodgy penalties, they haven't

scored in open play since beating Spain. Anyway two World Cups for one

generation of players is beyond greedy.

I enjoyed this tournament far more than the last World Cup, largely because the

traditional powers made it to the knockout stages. Germany played the best

football, Gattuso was the best player.

England are edged out by Portugal as the worst team in the tournament. Both

teams played negative football, Portugal showed more imagination, in bursts,

but cannot be forgiven for their histrionics and I loath teams with second rate

players that punch above their weight.

Penalties are a stain on the face of humanity but nothing will change while the

current, corrupt regime are in charge of the game. Let's hope by 2010 either

Sepp Bladder is out of power or six foot under and someone who has actually

played the bloody game at a high level is in charge i.e. Beckenbauer and not

Bladder's stooge Platini.

Congratulations to Italy supporters everywhere and thanks to everyone for

reading. Stats will follow and enjoy your summer.

Italy win 5-3 on penalties

Arsenal investigated by FIFA over Beveren

From BBC sports:

FA wants clarity on Arsenal probe

Arsenal badge

Arsenal say they do not have control of any other clubs

The Football Association have asked Fifa to clarify what rules Arsenal might have broken regarding their relationship with Belgian club Beveren.

Fifa want the FA to look into claims they made payments to Beveren.

FA spokesman Mark Hooper said: "We will await clarification on whether the allegations breach Fifa rules."

Premier League rules prohibit clubs making loans or owning shares but these rules do not apply to dealings with a club based outside of England.

A Belgian police inquiry discovered secret money links between Arsenal and Beveren to fund the club's takeover.

But Beveren club spokesman Dirk Dobbeleir said: "We have nothing to fear.

"A joint venture agreement has been made between Arsenal and Beveren but the police said everything was in order and there was no case to answer.

"We don't know why the media suddenly made so much of the matter though probably because the name Arsenal made it newsworthy."

Fifa communications director Markus Siegler said: "According to the structure of rules which are in place, the FA have to look into the matter.

"Fifa are interested in all cases around the world but individual members must run football in their country.

"They must take responsibility for their members so absolutely this is a case for the FA to deal with."

If found guility, Arsenal could be punished with anything from a fine to being relegated from the Premiership or kicked out of the Champions League.

The investigation, which was shown in a television report on Newsnight on Thursday, suggested that Arsenal had used Belgium's slack rules to recruit players from Africa.

The Gunners signed Emmanuel Eboue from Beveren for £1.5m.

While the FA have been instructed to lead the investigation, leading sports lawyer Mel Goldberg does not think Arsenal have anything to fear.

Goldberg told Five Live Sport: "Uefa and Fifa have rules about clubs owning shares in foreign teams.

"I don't think that's happened here because Arsenal say, rightly, they have no control of a foreign club."

Goldberg added: "There are two sets of rules you need to look at.

"One is the Premier League rules which prevent clubs owning shares or an interest in another Premiership or Football League club. That hasn't happened here.

"Then there are Uefa and Fifa rules which are similar, about clubs owning shares in foreign teams, and I don't think that's happened either."

The Belgian police investigation forced Arsenal to admit they had indirectly loaned Beveren £1m, although previously they had denied putting any money into the club.

A statement from the Gunners said: "Arsenal confirms it has never owned, directly or indirectly, any shares in Beveren or had any power whatsoever to influence its management or administration."

From BBC Sports:

Arsenal say it has never owned any shares in Beveren

Fifa has written to the Football Association requesting it investigates the relationship between Arsenal and Belgium club Beveren.

The BBC's Newsnight programme claims the Gunners made payments to Beveren.

The letter said: "We kindly ask you to carry out an investigation into the relevant relationship between your affiliated club, Arsenal, and Beveren.

"We would be grateful to be updated on the developments and informed of the findings as soon as possible."

The statement added: "We ask you to carry out an investigation to ensure proper clarification of the issue."

Newsnight learned that a police probe in Belgium had concluded Arsenal made secret payments of £1m to Beveren.

Arsenal have admitted providing a loan to Beveren indirectly, but say they have never had a controlling influence over the Belgian club.

Premier League rules prohibit clubs making loans or owning shares but these rules do not apply to dealings with a club based outside of England.

The Gunners have an arrangement with the Belgium club to play friendly matches and loan players.

Arsenal deny allegations of making irregular financial payments to Beveren.

An FA spokesman said: "We have received Fifa's letter asking us to carry out an appropriate investigation into the allegations relating to Arsenal.

"As requested our compliance department will be in contact with Arsenal regarding this matter."

From BBC Sports:

Arsenal probe finds no evidence

The Football Association has announced that it has not uncovered any evidence of wrongdoing by Arsenal in the club's relationship with Belgian side Beveren.

BBC Newsnight said Belgian police found that Arsenal made irregular payments to Beveren, charges the club denied.

Football's world governing body Fifa asked the FA to investigate, but it concluded the Gunners had not breached any FA or Premier League rules.

The material obtained during the FA's investigation has been sent to Fifa.

"As a result of our inquiries, we can confirm that we have not identified any evidence to suggest that Arsenal have breached any rules of the FA or the FA Premier League (FAPL) in relation to their dealings with Beveren," read an FA statement.

"In order to protect the integrity of matches and competitions, these rules prohibit clubs in the same competition from being owned, influenced or controlled by the same person or entity.

The FA has established that Beveren is a Belgian football club and therefore does not compete against Arsenal in the Premiership or the FA Cup. This is not what Sepp Blatter asked for

FA response

Newsnight & FA statements in full

"In this case, the relevant competitions are the FA Cup and the FA Premier League. The rules also prevent a Premier League club from owning or controlling another Premier League or Football League club."

Newsnight responded to the announcement by saying: "After its investigation the Football Association has concluded that because Beveren is a Belgian football club, there is no evidence that Arsenal has breached any of its own FA or FAPL rules.

"But this is not what Sepp Blatter asked it to investigate.

"The FA has not investigated any of the allegations in the original Newsnight film which related to dealings between Arsenal, Beveren and the Ivory Coast."

However an FA spokesman insisted: "We have conducted an inquiry in line with their request.

"The FA has undertaken a thorough and appropriate inquiry and will continue to offer any assistance that Fifa may require."

Newsnight revealed on 1 June how Belgian police uncovered an investment into Beveren of £1m from an anonymous donor, which they subsequently concluded had been provided by Arsenal.

Arsenal admitted providing a loan to Beveren indirectly, but said they have never had a controlling influence over the Belgian club.

Premier League rules prohibit clubs making loans or owning shares but these rules do not apply to dealings with a club based outside of England.

The Gunners have an arrangement with the Belgium club to play friendly matches and loan players.

Ivory Coast defender Emmanuel Eboue moved to Arsenal following a successful spell with the Belgian team.

From BBC Sports:

Fifa clears Arsenal after probe

Fifa has cleared Arsenal of any breach of club ownership rules over their dealings with Belgian side Beveren.

BBC Newsnight said Belgian police found Arsenal made an irregular £1m payment to Beveren - a charge the club denied.

Fifa asked the Football Association to look into the allegation and it absolved Arsenal of any wrongdoing.

And Fifa will not take the matter further, saying: "There is no evidence or indication of any infringement of the relevant regulations."

Arsenal always maintained the £1m payment to Beveren was by way of a loan "to assist in stabilising the finances of Beveren" and vehemently denied having a controlling influence over the club.

The FA earlier found the Gunners had not breached any rules of the FA or the FA Premier League in relation to their dealings with Beveren.

The Fifa statement backed up these findings.

It read: "After carefully analysing the documents and statements provided by the Football Association in relation to an alleged breach of club ownership rules by Arsenal and Belgian club Beveren, Fifa confirmed there is no evidence or indication of any infringement of the relevant regulations.

"The FA had already reached the same conclusion, having been requested by Fifa to investigate the case.

"Under the Fifa statutes, it is the responsibility of the member associations to ensure that neither a natural nor a legal person exercises control over more than one club whenever the integrity of any match or competition could be jeopardised.

Emmanuel Eboue

Eboue joined Arsenal from Beveren

"In view of these findings, Fifa does not see any reason for further investigation or for any additional measures to be taken in this connection."

Premier League rules prohibit clubs making loans or owning shares but these rules do not apply to dealings with a club based outside England.

The Gunners have an arrangement with the Belgium club to play friendly matches and there is an option for players to be loaned between the clubs.

Ivory Coast defender Emmanuel Eboue moved to Arsenal following a successful spell with the Belgian team.

World Cup 2006 Germany vs Portugal for 3rd Place

FRom Benny:

8 July 2006

GERMANY 3-1 PORTUGAL

Schweinsteiger 56, 79 Gomes 88

Petit 61 (og)

Metzelder headed down a Schneider free kick and Kehl flashed a volley just wide

of a post. Simao dribbled from the half-way line and played in Pauleta with a

lovely disguised pass, Kahn covered his near post and like an idiot Pauleta shot

straight at him. Ricardo, trying to look busy for the cameras, made an

un-necessarily spectacular save from a Podolski free kick.

Ricardo, who is an accident waiting to happen, was beaten for the second time in

the tournament when he misjudged the flight of speculative shot from

Schweinsteiger. Five minutes later he was picking the ball of his net again when

Petit sliced a Schweinsteiger free kick past him. It took the Portuguese over an

hour to really trouble Kahn, Deco forcing the Bayern 'keeper into a superb two

handed save. Minutes after coming on as a substitute for Klose, Neuville sprayed

a ball out wide to Schweinsteiger, Petit backed off as the midfielder ran in on

goal, Schweinsteiger took a step inside and let rip with an amazing right foot

shot which arched away from Ricardo before nestling into the corner of the net.

Kahn was almost caught by a ferocious 40 yard Ronaldo free kick, deceived by the

flight of the ball he managed to make a split second adjustment and punch the

ball clear. Figo, in his last ever international appearance, and Gomes combined

to score a consolation goal. Gomes met Figo's outswinging cross with a brilliant

diving header.

That reprehensible cheating Ronaldo, who was once again booed unmercifully,

should have been booked for an outrageous dive in the box at the end of the

first half. He's in for a long season regardless of whether he stays at Man

United or leaves for another club.

AFAIK, Christiano Ronaldo is a punk he should be tossed into the dunk!

World Cup 2006 Game 2 France takes on Portugal

From Benny:

5 July 2006

PORTUGAL 0-1 FRANCE

Zidane 33 (Pen)

The Portuguese defence got caught on a longball out of defence, Malouda,

probably because he was being shadowed by the brilliant Miguel, wasted the

opportunity by snatching at his shot. Barthez flapped at a tame Deco effort but

no one was on hand to take advantage. Just past the half hour mark Malouda

dribbled his way past a couple of Portuguese players before giving a reverse

pass to Henry and he made the most of Carvalho's clumsy challenge as he turned

inside the defender to win a penalty. Up stepped Zidane to blast the ball into

the bottom left corner. Henry wasted a good opening with a poor finish and

Ricardo, like slap-head Barthez, made hard work of a tame long range shot.

The French should have finished off Portugal on the break early in the second

half but Zidane screwed up a pass to Henry with the striker open in the box.

Les Blues made no concerted attempts to attack probably confident in the

knowledge that Portugal's strikers would have problems scoring in the MLS &

J-League let alone in the World Cup but with prize clown Barthez in goal there's

always a chance. He dropped an almighty bollock when he scooped a Ronaldo free

kick high in the air with both hands but Figo bailed him out by heading over. In

injury time Thuram fell under a challenge from Postiga when they battled for a

longball but Meira smashed it into row Z.

After last night's classic both teams served up a magnitude of shite. As far as

Portugal are concerned good riddance to bad rubbish. One goal in three games

in the knockout stages speaks for itself and their part in the disgraceful match

against the Dutch cannot be overlooked. I expected more from Scolari, especially

given the way Brazil played in 2002 and Portugal in 2004 but I guess, given the

abysmal quality of the squad he had to work with, surely one of the worst teams

to ever play in a World Cup semi-final, he did well to get them this far.

Ronaldo was unmercifully booed by the French, presumably because people thought

he was disingenuous in his comments over the Rooney red card and because he

continues the long tradition of simulation that plagues Portuguese players

(Greeks and Turks are equally as bad). Ronaldo and Postiga should have been

booked for diving in the box.

Zidane looked exhausted after 60 minutes, as did many of the other players which

makes Sunday's midfield battle all the more intriguing. Gattuso and Pirlo can

keep going for 90 minutes and beyond, can Vieira and Makelele? Unfortunately for

Italy Saha is out of the final having picked up his second yellow of the

knockout stages which means Trezeguet will play some part and we all know what

happened last time he played against Italy.

SO Saturday Germany and Portugal and the BIG game:

France versus Italy. In Euro 2000 France 2 Italy 1

ALLEZ LES BLEUS!!

World Cup 2006 Semi-Finals Game 1

From Benny

4 July 2006

GERMANY 0-2 ITALY

Grosso 118

Del Piero 120

Totti chipped a delightful pass to Roma team-mate Perrotta but a poor first

touch was the invitation Lehmann needed to come off his line and smother the

ball. Germany's forwards tore through the heart of the Italian defence with a

rapid series of one-twos but as Klose played the ball out wide to Schneider the

imposing figure of Buffon had advanced off his line to close down the angles and

Schneider blazed over.

Early in the second half Klose gathered a pass 30 yards from goal and headed

straight from the centre of the box and showed tremendous strength to hold off

Gattuso then probably became the first player in this tournament to beat

Cannavaro but Buffon rushed off his line and kicked the ball clear. Schneider

dropped a ball between Grosso and Gattuso, Podolski rolled Materazzi as he

turned before drawing a good save from Buffon and Friedrich snatched at the

rebound.

With the spectre of penalties looming Italy made an aggressive start to extra

time. Metzelder fell on the right edge of the box as he battled with Gilardino

for a loose ball, Ballack arrived to cover, as Gilardino got to the by-line he

cut inside Ballack only to see his shot come back of Lehmann's post, shades of

Milan vs Barcelona. A minute later Zambrotta rattled the crossbar after Pirlo's

corner was only half cleared. Late in first half injury time Podolski, who did a

tremendous amount of work in midfield, wasted what was arguably Germany's

clearest opening. As Grosso backed off from the jet heeled Odonkor the

midfielder floated a super deep cross to the back post and Podolski headed yards

wide.

Seconds after Del Piero wasted a good opening by getting the ball caught in his

feet the Germans poured forward on the break through Kehl and Odonkor, Kehl's

angled pass took Podolski wide of Cannavaro but his shot was brilliantly saved

by Buffon. Gilardino laid off Iaquinta's delightful back heel to Del Piero but

he slashed his shot horribly wide. Iaquinta helped setup another chance with a

volleyed pass infield to Pirlo, he took advantage of Kehl's slip to unleash a

shot from 25 yards which Lehmann tipped out for a corner. Kehl didn't get enough

on Del Piero's corner, clearing the ball as far as Pirlo who was standing inside

the D, he took four steps forward (and three defenders with him) before slipping

a disguised pass to Grosso who struck a fantastic, first time left foot shoot

into the bottom left corner of Lehmann's net, queue Marco Tardelli style

celebrations from the Palermo defender. Cannavaro headed out a deep Ballack

cross then burst out of his box to follow up as Podolski intercepted, Cannavaro

headed the ball down and continued to run forward before Totti took the ball off

him and sent Gilardino racing down the left, Gilardino turned off the pace as he

approached the box and stepped past Metzelder before playing in the galloping

Del Piero with magnificent reverse pass, the Juve forward curled the ball first

time into the top corner of the net and seconds later the ref blew for full

time.

Klinsmann consoled his players after the match. He has proved all his critics

totally and utterly wrong and took the German football back 2 decades, back to

when the team played an aggressive brand of direct, attacking football. They

have a bright future with him as coach.

One of the all time great football matches played in a wonderful spirit by two

adventurous teams matched by Mexican referee Benito Archundia's officiating.

High on precision, high on flair and composed defending, especially from the

Italians. In extra time Italy were playing with three forwards (Gilardino,

Iaquinta and Del Piero) in addition to Totti and Pirlo. Pirlo and Gattuso were

outstanding and there aren't enough superlatives to describe the level of

performance of Fabio Cannavaro.

"Some foreign critics have too negative a view of Italian football. No top level

Italian club for example play the old-style man-marking game. Our football

has evolved." - Marcello Lippi, World Soccer April 2006

"This team often plays with three men up front, we play an attacking game and

one that calls for me and the other strikers to help out in midfield too. It

calls for the whole side to be involved all the time and it a long way from the

old catenaccio label that people like to stick on us."

So Germany in Saturday's Games and Italy in Sunday's Game.

Today determines the other halp with Portugal vs France

World Cup 2006 QFs Day 2

From Benny's Report on Quarterfinals Day 2:

1 July 2006

BRAZIL 0-1 FRANCE

Henry 56

Ronaldo passed up what was by most forwards standards a great chance from a

Ronaldinho free kick but then in the air he's about as useless as Henry. On the

stroke of half time Zidane received possession on the edge of his box and burst

forward, pushing the ball wide of Lucio's despairing sliding tackle and leaping

over Gilberto's dangerous challenge before threading a pass through the heart of

the Brazil defence but Vieira's run was cynically brought to an end by Juan.

Early in the second half another chance went begging for Vieira when he headed

an immaculate Zidane free kick wide of a post. However it seemed only a matter

of time before the French would make their dominance count and in the 56th

minute they broke through. Zidane, standing on the left touchline, floated a

free kick towards the back post and the unmarked Henry slammed the ball into the

roof of the net, Zidane's first ever assist to Henry in a France shirt. Ribery

mugged Lucio on the left touchline, rolling the ball away from the powerful

defender before firing the ball across the face of goal and as Juan tried to

clear he almost sliced into his own net. Dida saved at the feet of Ribery on a

Henry lead counter attack. Govou and Saha wasted chances on the break and it

would have been a travesty had Ze Roberto equalised in injury time but he

volleyed substitute Cicinho's driving low cross well wide of a post.

A magnificent performance from a France side in which Zidane was at his

enchanting best. Vieira and Makelele absolutely massacred the Brazilian midfield

with an awesome display of power. France should have won by a larger margin and

playing football of this quality who would begrudge them a second World Cup?

It's ironic to see Brazil repeat the EXACT same mistake as France did 4 years

ago by continuing to field past it's like Cafu, Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo

(record of nor record) with better alternatives on the bench (Gilberto, Cicinho

and Fred) and more left at home.

ENGLAND 0-0 PORTUGAL

Lennon came on for the injured Beckham on 51 minutes and manufactured the games

first genuine chance. Running inside from the right flank, he skinned Valente,

took the ball past Carvalho and Meira, let it roll to Rooney who miss-kicked

horribly, the ball fell to Cole and he ballooned high over the bar. TWAT. Rooney

stamped on Carvalho's bollocks after the defender wrestled him to the ground. He

appeared to be sent off after Ronaldo had a word with the ref, which was

irrelevant as he deserved to go. The Portuguese, who were even less of an

attacking threat then 10 man England finally drew a good save from Robinson when

Figo almost caught him out with a clever first time shot. A minute later

Portugal's joke of a 'keeper Ricardo (yes he's good on penalties but he's

hopeless at everything else) parried a Lampard free kick up into the air but

substitute Lennon's weak follow-up was easily saved. Miguel made a fantastic

clearance as Crouch, who was climbing all over him, was about to head in a

Gerrard cross.

Penalty Shoot Out

Simao drills the ball low into the bottom corner

Lampard. What did I say about the player most likely to miss a penalty?

Telegraphed, low, right of centre and not hit with enough pace

Viana strikes the outside of a post

Hargreaves strikes a firm penalty low to the left, in off a post

Petit goes to the left and, just like Viana, hits a post

Gerrard. Despite shouts of 'Come on Gerad you bastad' from my 2 year old (don't

let toddlers in the room when watching shoot-outs) Liverpool's captain hits an

awful penalty too centrally and at a poor height, no challenge for a penalty

expert like Ricardo

(Benny teach you children some manners!!)

Postiga sends Robinson the wrong way. Robinson is FAT and needs to go on a diet

Carragher scores but has to re-take as the ref hadn't blown his whistle.

Predictably his second effort is saved

Ronaldo curls the ball over Robinson who finally tries something different by

actually diving but misses completely

Portugal win 3-1 on penalties

England bottled it and despite playing with ten men had the chances to win the

match, well two of them. I was disappointed in Scolari's negative approach but

that isn't going to work against France. What must be galling for England is

that this is a decidedly average Portugal team who were missing their best

player (Deco) and they still couldn't take advantage. Typical of the

limp-wristed performances we have come to expect of England under Eriksson. On

the bright side they've sparred themselves a through thrashing from the French

in the semi-finals and Hargreaves was great.
