John 18:1-2
The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
Mt 26:47-56; Mk 14:43-50; Lk 22:47-53
1 (Mt 26:36; 2Sa 15:23; Mk 14:32)When Jesus had spoken these words,
He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley.
There was a garden which He and His disciples entered.
2 (Lk 21:37; 22:39) Now Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place,
for Jesus often met there with His disciples.
[1] When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over
the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his
disciples.
[2] And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes
resorted thither with his disciples.
Mark 14:32-42
The Prayer in Gethsemane
Mt 26:36-46; Lk 22:39-46
32 (Mt 26:36-46; Mk 14:36) They came to a place which was named Gethsemane.
And He said to His disciples, "Sit here while I pray."
33 (Mk 5:37; 9:2) He took Peter and James and John with Him
and began to be greatly distressed and very troubled.
34 (Jn 12:27) And He said to them, "My soul is deeply sorrowful unto death.
Remain here and keep watch."
35 (Mk 14:41; Heb 5:7) He went a little farther and fell on the ground
and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him.
36 (Gal 4:6; Jn 5:30) He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible
for You. Remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will."
37 Then He came and found them sleeping and said to Peter,
"Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not keep watch one hour?
38 (Mt 26:41; Mk 14:34) Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation.
The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
39 Again He went away and prayed the same words.
40 When He returned, He again found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
And they did not know what to answer Him.

"Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough! The hour has come.
Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

[33] And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore
amazed, and to be very heavy;
[34] And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry
ye here, and watch.
[35] And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that,
if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
[36] And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away
this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
[37] And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon,
sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?
[38] Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is
ready, but the flesh is weak.
[39] And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.
[40] And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were
heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.
[41] And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and
take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is
betrayed into the hands of sinners.
[42] Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

The Prayer in Gethsemane

36 (Mt 26:39; 26:42) Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane
and said to the disciples, "Sit here while I go and pray close by."
37 (Mt 4:21; 17:1) He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee
and began to be sorrowful and troubled.
38 (Jn 12:27) Then He said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful,
even to death. Wait here, and keep watch with Me."
39 (Mt 20:22; 26:42) He went a little farther, and falling on His face,
He prayed, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me.
Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will."
40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter,
"So, could you not keep watch with Me one hour?

[35] Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny
thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.

Luke 22:39-46
The Prayer on the Mount of Olives

39 (Lk 21:37; Mt 21:1) According to His custom, He came out and went
to the Mount of Olives. And His disciples followed Him.
40 (Mt 6:13; Lk 22:46) When He came there, He said to them,
"Pray that you may not fall into temptation."
41 (Mt 26:39; Mk 14:35) He withdrew from them about a stone's throw,
and He knelt down and prayed,
42 (Mt 20:22) "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me.
Nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done."
43 (Mt 4:11; 1Ti 3:16) An angel from heaven appeared to Him,
strengthening Him.
44 (La 1:12; Heb 5:7) And being in anguish, He prayed more earnestly.
And His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45 When He rose from prayer and had come to His disciples,
He found them sleeping from sorrow.

Mark 14:43-52
The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

43 (Ac 1:16) Immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas,
one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs,
came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
44 Now he who betrayed Him had given them a sign, saying,
"Whomever I kiss, He is the One. Seize Him and lead Him away safely."
45 So as soon as he came, he went to Him immediately and said,
"Rabbi, Rabbi!" and kissed Him.
46 They laid hands on Him and seized Him.
47 Then one of those who stood by drew his sword
and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
48 Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords
and clubs to arrest Me as you would a thief?
49 (Mk 12:35; Jn 8:2) Every day I was with you in the temple teaching,
and you did not seize Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled."
50 (Mk 14:27; Ps 38:11) Then they all deserted Him and fled.
The Young Man Who Fled
51 A young man followed Him, wearing a linen cloth around himself.
And the young men laid hold of him,
52 so he left the linen cloth, and fled from them unclothed.
[43] And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve,
and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief
priests and the scribes and the elders.
[44] And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I
shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.
[45] And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith,
Master, master; and kissed him.
[46] And they laid their hands on him, and took him.
[47] And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the
high priest, and cut off his ear.
[48] And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a
thief, with swords and with staves to take me?
[49] I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but
the scriptures must be fulfilled.
[50] And they all forsook him, and fled.
[51] And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast
about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:

48 Now he who betrayed Him had given them a sign, saying,
"Whomever I shall kiss is the Man. Seize Him."
49 (Mt 26:25) He immediately came to Jesus and said, "Hail, Rabbi!"
and kissed Him.
50 (Mt 20:13; 22:12) And Jesus said to him, "Friend, why have you come?"
Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him.
51 (Mk 14:47) Immediately, one of those who were with Jesus stretched
out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest,
and cut off his ear.
52 (Ge 9:6; Rev 13:10) Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back
in its place. For all those who take up the sword will perish by the sword.
53 (Mt 4:11; 2Ki 6:17; Da 7:10) Do you think that I cannot now pray to My
Father, and He will at once give Me more than twelve legions of angels?

kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.
[49] And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
[50] And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came
they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.
[51] And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand,
and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off
his ear.
[52] Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for
all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
[53] Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall
presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?
[54] But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
[55] In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as
against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you
teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.
[56] But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be
fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
Luke 22:47-53
The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 While He was yet speaking, a crowd came. And he who was called Judas,
one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.
48 But Jesus said to him, "Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"
49 (Lk 22:38) When those who were around Him saw what would follow, they said,
"Lord, shall we strike with the sword?"
50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off
his right ear.
51 But Jesus said, "This is enough!" And He touched his ear and healed him.
52 (Lk 22:4) Then Jesus said to the chief priests, and captains of the temple
guard, and the elders who had come for Him, "Have you come out with swords
and clubs as against a rebel?
53 (Jn 12:27; Ac 26:18) Daily, while I was with you in the temple,
you did not lay hands on Me.
But this is your hour, and the power of darkness!"
[47] And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called
Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss
him.
[48] But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a
kiss?
[49] When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto
him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?
[50] And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his
right ear.
[51] And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his
ear, and healed him.
[52] Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and
the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with
swords and staves?
[53] When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands
against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
John 18:3-24
3 (Jn 18:12; Lk 22:47-53) So Judas, having taken a detachment
of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees,
came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
4 (Jn 13:1; 18:7) Jesus therefore, knowing everything that would happen
to Him, went forward and said to them, "Whom do you seek?"
5 They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth."
Jesus said to them, "I am He." And Judas, who betrayed Him,
was standing with them.
6 When He said, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 (Jn 18:4) Again Jesus asked them, "Whom do you seek?"
They said, "Jesus of Nazareth."
8 Jesus answered, "I told you that I am He.
So then let these go their way if you are looking for Me."
9 (Jn 17:12) This was to fulfill the word which He had spoken,
"I have lost none of those whom You have given Me."
10 (Mk 14:47) Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it
and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear.
The servant's name was Malchus.
11 (Mt 20:22; 26:39) Then Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword
into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?"

which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
Jesus Before the High Priest

12 (Jn 18:3; Mt 26:57) Then the detachment of soldiers and the commander
and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.
13 (Jn 18:24; Lk 3:2; Mt 26:3) First they led Him to Annas,
for he was the father-in-law to Caiaphas,
who was the high priest that year.
14 Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient
that one man should die for the people.
[12] Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and
bound him,
[13] And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas,
which was the high priest that same year.
[14] Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was
expedient that one man should die for the people.
Peter's Denial of Jesus
Mt 26:69-70; Mk 14:66-68; Lk 22:55-57
15 (Mk 14:54; Lk 22:54) Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another
disciple. That disciple was known to the high priest and went with Jesus
into the courtyard of the high priest.
16 But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple,
who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper
and brought Peter in.
17 Then the servant girl, being the doorkeeper, said to Peter,
"Are you not also one of this Man’s disciples?"
He said, "I am not."
18 (Mk 14:54; Jn 18:25) Now the servants and officers stood there
and warmed themselves, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold.
Peter also stood with them and warmed himself.
[15] And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that
disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the
palace of the high priest.
[16] But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple,
which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door,
and brought in Peter.
[17] Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also
one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
[18] And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of
coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with
them, and warmed himself.
The High Priest Questions Jesus
Mt 26:59-66; Mk 14:55-64; Lk 22:66-71
19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His teaching.
20 (Jn 7:26; Mt 4:23) Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world.
I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple,
where the Jews always meet, and I said nothing in secret.
21 Why do you ask Me? Ask those who heard Me and what I have said to them.
Certainly they know what I said."
22 When He had said this, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus
with the palm of his hand, saying, "Is that how You answer the high priest?"
23 Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil,
but if well, why do you strike me?"
24 (Jn 18:13) Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
[19] The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.
[20] Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the
synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret
have I said nothing.
[21] Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto
them: behold, they know what I said.
[22] And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck
Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
[23] Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil:
but if well, why smitest thou me?
[24] Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
2) Our Daily Bread for 4 November 2023 Titled
God's Rescue
Psalm 40:1-4
1 I waited patiently for the Lord,
and He turned to me, and heard my cry.
2 (Ps 63:1; 84:2) He also brought me up out of a horrible pit,
out of the miry clay,
and set my feet on a rock,
and established my steps.
3 (Ps 79:10; 80:5) He has put a new song in my mouth,
even praise to our God;
many will see it, and fear,
and will trust in the Lord.
4 (Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8) Blessed is the man
who places trust in the Lord,
but does not turn toward the proud,
nor those falling away to falsehood.
[1] I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my
cry.
[2] He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and
set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
[3] And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many
shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
[4] Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not
the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
A compassionate volunteer was called a "guardian angel" for his heroic
efforts. Jake Manna was installing solar panels at a job site when he joined
an urgent search to find a missing five-year-old girl. While neighbours
searched their garages and yards, Manna took a path that led him into a nearby
wooded area where he spotted the girl waist-deep in a marsh. He waded
carefully into the sticky mud to pull her out of her predicament
and return her, damp but unharmed, to her grateful mother.
Like that little girl, David also experienced deliverance. The singer "waited
patiently" for God to respond to his heartfelt cries for mercy (Psalm 40:1).
And He did. God leaned in, paid close attention to his cry for help
and responded by rescuing him from the "mud and mire" of his circumstances
(v. 2)-providing sure footing for David's life. The past rescues from the
muddy marsh of life reinforced his desire to sing songs of praise, to make God
his trust in future circumstances and to share his story with others (vv. 3-4).
When we find ourselves in life challenges such as financial difficulties,
marital turmoil, and feelings of inadequacy, let's cry out to God and
patiently wait for Him to respond (v. 1). He's there, ready to help us in our
time of need and give us a firm place to stand.

Misty was only 4 when her parents divorced. Her dad moved away,
and the following summer she went with her grandparents to visit him
in his new apartment. In the swimming pool one afternoon, Grandpa stood
Misty on the side of the pool, held out his arm, and called, "Jump!"
But Misty, normally a little fish, suddenly seemed afraid of the water,
and stood trembling on the sidewalk shaking her head.
"Jump, Misty - I'll catch you!"
"Are you sure, Grandpa?"
"Of course I'm sure! Jump!"
But Misty wouldn't jump. Finally Grandpa, a bit irritated, said, "Misty, do
you think I Won't catch you? Do you think I'll just walk away?"
The tears spilled over, and Misty sobbed. "Daddy did!"
Human support systems often fail us. We disappoint those we love, and
are disappointed by them. People simply aren't there for us
when we need them most.
But God promises that with him things are different. He's always there,
always listening, always caring, always ready to support us.
"Underneath his everlasting arms".
Sometimes those arms reach out clothed in flesh, in the warm embrace
of a loved one. Sometimes they support us through the Word, sometimes through
the quiet peace that comes in prayer. Sometimes we are not aware of them
at all, but they still hold us up, supporting, surrounding, loving.
Underneath us are the everlasting arms.
Application
a) Have I ever felt abandoned by someone I loved and depended upon?
b) How have I experienced the faithfulness of God's "Everlasting arms"?
c) Now can this verse help me in times when I feel my supports have given way?

As of Autumn 2014, St. John's does not have a local CNMM network. Pray with us
for God's people to come together in prayer
and cooperative efforts to reach Muslims with the Good News.
St. John's has one mosque and 2 more musallas , or prayer locations, which
may grow into mosques of their own. The mosque is called Masjid an Noor,
The Mosque of the Light, and mosque historical documents record a trip in 1986
to Saudi Arabia to raise funds for the land purchase and construction costs.
A small number of Muslim families had come prior to 1964, but moved on to
other places after a short time. After this date, a small community began
to remain and grow , reaching about 25 families in the 1980s. A number
of international students also join the community annually
ranging from 25 to 60.
In 2014 the mosque website reports the community is made up of some 200
families and many university students attending Memorial University. A
small number of native Newfoundlanders have also converted to the Islamic
faith, one saying of this religion in Newfoundland, "Islam is a growing face".
With the growth of the community, the current challenge is lack of space
in the mosque, which they are now looking at expanding.

- The true Light of life, Jesus Christ, to be revealed to Muslims
in Newfoundland through the word, dreams, visions and answers to prayer.
- Christians to be as "wise as serpents and harmless as doves" regarding
Islam and reaching out in loving witness to Muslims in St. John's.

students on the university, college and trade school campuses.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 : 17 12 They were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other,
"What does this mean?"
13 (1Co 14:23) Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine."
Peter's Speech at Pentecost

hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under
a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the
house."

- Pray for, and offer generous hospitality to, those you know who are serving
Christ among Muslim people -
Romans 12:13 "contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality."
- When you gather with fellow believers, remember to pray for Muslims
throughout the year and encourage them to also participate in 30 Days!

Jesus Before the High Priest
Mt 26:57-58; Mk 14:53-54; Lk 22:54
12 (Jn 18:3; Mt 26:57) Then the detachment of soldiers and the commander
and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.
13 (Jn 18:24; Lk 3:2; Mt 26:3) First they led Him to Annas,
for he was the father-in-law to Caiaphas,
who was the high priest that year.
14 Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient
that one man should die for the people.

Peter's Denial of Jesus
Mt 26:69-70; Mk 14:66-68; Lk 22:55-57
15 (Mk 14:54; Lk 22:54) Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another
disciple. That disciple was known to the high priest and went with Jesus
into the courtyard of the high priest.
16 But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple,
who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper
and brought Peter in.
17 Then the servant girl, being the doorkeeper, said to Peter,
"Are you not also one of this Man’s disciples?"
He said, "I am not."
18 (Mk 14:54; Jn 18:25) Now the servants and officers stood there
and warmed themselves, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold.
Peter also stood with them and warmed himself.
[15] And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that

The High Priest Questions Jesus
Mt 26:59-66; Mk 14:55-64; Lk 22:66-71
19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His teaching.
20 (Jn 7:26; Mt 4:23) Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world.
I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple,
where the Jews always meet, and I said nothing in secret.
21 Why do you ask Me? Ask those who heard Me and what I have said to them.
Certainly they know what I said."
22 When He had said this, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus
with the palm of his hand, saying, "Is that how You answer the high priest?"
23 Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil,
but if well, why do you strike me?"
24 (Jn 18:13) Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
[19] The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

God's Rescue
Psalm 40:1-4
1 I waited patiently for the Lord,
and He turned to me, and heard my cry.
2 (Ps 63:1; 84:2) He also brought me up out of a horrible pit,
out of the miry clay,
and set my feet on a rock,
and established my steps.
3 (Ps 79:10; 80:5) He has put a new song in my mouth,
even praise to our God;
many will see it, and fear,
and will trust in the Lord.
4 (Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8) Blessed is the man
who places trust in the Lord,
but does not turn toward the proud,
nor those falling away to falsehood.
[1] I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my
cry.
[2] He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and
set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
[3] And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many
shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
[4] Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not
the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
A compassionate volunteer was called a "guardian angel" for his heroic
efforts. Jake Manna was installing solar panels at a job site when he joined
an urgent search to find a missing five-year-old girl. While neighbours
searched their garages and yards, Manna took a path that led him into a nearby
wooded area where he spotted the girl waist-deep in a marsh. He waded
carefully into the sticky mud to pull her out of her predicament
and return her, damp but unharmed, to her grateful mother.
Like that little girl, David also experienced deliverance. The singer "waited
patiently" for God to respond to his heartfelt cries for mercy (Psalm 40:1).
And He did. God leaned in, paid close attention to his cry for help
and responded by rescuing him from the "mud and mire" of his circumstances
(v. 2)-providing sure footing for David's life. The past rescues from the
muddy marsh of life reinforced his desire to sing songs of praise, to make God
his trust in future circumstances and to share his story with others (vv. 3-4).
When we find ourselves in life challenges such as financial difficulties,
marital turmoil, and feelings of inadequacy, let's cry out to God and
patiently wait for Him to respond (v. 1). He's there, ready to help us in our
time of need and give us a firm place to stand.

Misty was only 4 when her parents divorced. Her dad moved away,
and the following summer she went with her grandparents to visit him
in his new apartment. In the swimming pool one afternoon, Grandpa stood
Misty on the side of the pool, held out his arm, and called, "Jump!"
But Misty, normally a little fish, suddenly seemed afraid of the water,
and stood trembling on the sidewalk shaking her head.
"Jump, Misty - I'll catch you!"
"Are you sure, Grandpa?"
"Of course I'm sure! Jump!"
But Misty wouldn't jump. Finally Grandpa, a bit irritated, said, "Misty, do
you think I Won't catch you? Do you think I'll just walk away?"
The tears spilled over, and Misty sobbed. "Daddy did!"
Human support systems often fail us. We disappoint those we love, and
are disappointed by them. People simply aren't there for us
when we need them most.
But God promises that with him things are different. He's always there,
always listening, always caring, always ready to support us.
"Underneath his everlasting arms".
Sometimes those arms reach out clothed in flesh, in the warm embrace
of a loved one. Sometimes they support us through the Word, sometimes through
the quiet peace that comes in prayer. Sometimes we are not aware of them
at all, but they still hold us up, supporting, surrounding, loving.
Underneath us are the everlasting arms.
Application
a) Have I ever felt abandoned by someone I loved and depended upon?
b) How have I experienced the faithfulness of God's "Everlasting arms"?
c) Now can this verse help me in times when I feel my supports have given way?

As of Autumn 2014, St. John's does not have a local CNMM network. Pray with us
for God's people to come together in prayer
and cooperative efforts to reach Muslims with the Good News.
St. John's has one mosque and 2 more musallas , or prayer locations, which
may grow into mosques of their own. The mosque is called Masjid an Noor,
The Mosque of the Light, and mosque historical documents record a trip in 1986
to Saudi Arabia to raise funds for the land purchase and construction costs.
A small number of Muslim families had come prior to 1964, but moved on to
other places after a short time. After this date, a small community began
to remain and grow , reaching about 25 families in the 1980s. A number
of international students also join the community annually
ranging from 25 to 60.
In 2014 the mosque website reports the community is made up of some 200
families and many university students attending Memorial University. A
small number of native Newfoundlanders have also converted to the Islamic
faith, one saying of this religion in Newfoundland, "Islam is a growing face".
With the growth of the community, the current challenge is lack of space
in the mosque, which they are now looking at expanding.
Pray for
- The true Light of life, Jesus Christ, to be revealed to Muslims
in Newfoundland through the word, dreams, visions and answers to prayer.
- Christians to be as "wise as serpents and harmless as doves" regarding
Islam and reaching out in loving witness to Muslims in St. John's.
- for a dedicated, intentional witness to the growing number of Muslim
students on the university, college and trade school campuses.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 : 17 12 They were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other,
"What does this mean?"
13 (1Co 14:23) Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine."
Peter's Speech at Pentecost
14 (Ac 1:26) But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice
and said to them, "Men of Judea and all you who dwell in Jerusalem,
let this be known to you, and listen to my words.

hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under
a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the
house."

Christ among Muslim people -
Romans 12:13 "contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality."
- When you gather with fellow believers, remember to pray for Muslims
throughout the year and encourage them to also participate in 30 Days!
My paternal side is of Muslim heritage and will offer this section to further
call for Muslim converts to Christian and any other converts to Christianity
(Hindus, Jews, aboriginals Canadian, atheists, secular humanists, ...)
