Day 200 of My 3rd Bible Study Journey - 19 July 2023 reflections
Day 200, 19 July 2023
1) Hosea 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Hosea 1
1 (Isa 1:1; Mic 1:1; Am 1:1) The word of the Lord that came to Hosea
son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah,
kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.
Hosea's Wife and Children
2 (Hos 3:1; Dt 31:16) When the Lord first spoke by Hosea, the Lord said
to Hosea: "Go, take for yourself a wife of harlotry and children of harlotry,
for the land has committed great harlotry, departing from the Lord."
3 So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim as a wife.
She conceived, and bore him a son.
4 (2Ki 10:7-8; 10:10-11) The Lord said to him: "Call his name Jezreel,That is,
May God make fertile. for in a little while, I will punish the house of Jehu
for the blood of Jezreel,
and will bring to an end the kingdom of the house of Israel.
5 (Jos 17:16; Jdg 6:33) On that day, I will break the bow of Israel
in the Valley of Jezreel."
6 (2Ki 17:6; Hos 2:4) Then Gomer conceived again, and bore a daughter.
And the Lord said to Hosea: "Call her name Lo-Ruhamah,
[Or the great king.] for I will no longer have mercy upon the house of Israel
but will utterly sweep them away.
7 (Zec 4:6; 2Ki 19:35) But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah,
and will save them by the Lord their God, and will not save them by bow,
or by sword, or by battle, or by horses, or by horsemen."
8 When Gomer had weaned Lo-Ruhamah, she conceived, and bore a son.
9 Then the Lord said: "Call his name Lo-Ammi, [That is, Not My people.]
for you are not My people, and I am not your God."
10 (Hos 1:9; Ge 13:16) Yet the number of the children of Israel will be
as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered.
And in the place where it was said to them, "You are not My people,"
there it will be said to them, "You are the children of the living God."
11 (Isa 11:12-13; Hos 3:5) Then will the Judahites and the children of Israel
be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they will come
up out of the land, for great will be the day of Jezreel.
Hosea 1
[1] The word of the LORD that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the
days
of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of
Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.
[2] The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD said to
Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms:
for
the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD.
[3] So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim; which conceived, and
bare him a son.
[4] And the LORD said unto him, Call his name Jezreel; for yet a little
while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and
will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel.
[5] And it shall come to pass at that day, that I will break the bow of
Israel in the valley of Jezreel.
[6] And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him,
Call her name Lo-ruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of
Israel; but I will utterly take them away.
[7] But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by
the
LORD their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle,
by horses, nor by horsemen.
[8] Now when she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived, and bare a son.
[9] Then said God, Call his name Lo-ammi: for ye are not my people, and I
will not be your God.
[10] Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the
sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that
in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it
shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.
[11] Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered
together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of
the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel.
Hosea 2:1-13
Hosea 2
1 (Hos 2:2) 3Say to your brothers, Ammi,
[That is, My people.] and to your sisters, Ruhamah. That is, Pitied.
Israel's Unfaithfulness Punished
2 (Isa 50:1; Eze 23:45) Plead with your mother, plead-
for she is not My wife,
and am I not her husband-
that she put away her harlotry from her face,
and her adultery from between her breasts,
3 (Isa 32:13-14; Eze 16:22) lest I strip her naked
and leave her as in the day that she was born,
and turn her into a wilderness,
and turn her into a dry land,
and kill her with thirst.
4 (Jer 13:14; Eze 8:18) I will not have mercy upon her children,
for they are children of harlotry.
5 (Isa 1:21; Jer 44:17-18) For their mother has played the whore.
She that conceived them has acted shamefully.
For she said, "I will pursue my lovers,
who provide my bread and my water,
my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink."
6 (Job 19:8; 3:23) Therefore, behold, I will hedge up your way with thorns,
and make a wall, so that she will not find her paths.
7 (Jer 2:2; Hos 5:13) She will pursue her lovers, but she will not reach them;
and she will seek them but will not find them.
Then she will say,
"I will go and return to my first husband,
for it was better for me then than now."
8 (Isa 1:3; Eze 16:16-19) But she did not know that it was I who provided her
the grain, the wine, and the oil,
and multiplied her silver and gold
that they used for Baal.
9 (Hos 2:3) Therefore I will take back My grain in its time
and My wine in its season,
and I will recover My wool and My flax,
given to cover her nakedness.
10 (Eze 23:29) Therefore I will uncover her shame
in the sight of her lovers,
and no one will deliver her from My hand.
11 (Jer 7:34; Isa 1:13-14) I will also bring to an end all her joy,
her annual feasts, her New Moons,
and her Sabbaths, and all her solemn assemblies.
12 (Isa 5:5; 7:23) I will destroy her vines and her fig trees,
of which she has said, "These are my rewards that my lovers have given me."
I will make them a forest,
and the beasts of the field will eat them.
13 (Hos 11:2; Jdg 3:7) I will punish her for the days of the Baals,
when she burned incense to them
and adorned herself with her earrings and her jewelry,
and pursued her lovers, but forgot Me, declares the Lord.
[1] Say ye unto your brethren, Ammi; and to your sisters, Ru-hamah.
[2] Plead with your mother, plead: for she is not my wife, neither am I her
husband: let her therefore put away her whoredoms out of her sight, and her
adulteries from between her breasts;
[3] Lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day that she was born, and
make her as a wilderness, and set her like a dry land, and slay her with
thirst.
[4] And I will not have mercy upon her children; for they be the children of
whoredoms.
[5] For their mother hath played the harlot: she that conceived them hath
done shamefully: for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my
bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink.
[6] Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns, and make a wall,
that she shall not find her paths.
[7] And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them;
and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then shall she say, I will
go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now.
[8] For she did not know that I gave her corn, and wine, and oil, and
multiplied her silver and gold, which they prepared for Baal.
[9] Therefore will I return, and take away my corn in the time thereof, and
my wine in the season thereof, and will recover my wool and my flax
given to cover her nakedness.
[10] And now will I discover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and
none shall deliver her out of mine hand.
[11] I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new
moons, and her sabbaths, and all her solemn feasts.
[12] And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, whereof she hath said,
These are my rewards that my lovers have given me: and I will make them a
forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them.
[13] And I will visit upon her the days of Baalim, wherein she burned
incense to them, and she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels,
and she went after her lovers, and forgat me, saith the LORD.
God's Mercy on Israel
14 (Eze 20:35-36) Therefore, I will allure her,
and bring her into the wilderness,
and speak tenderly to her.
15 (Jer 2:2; Jos 7:26) From there, I will give her vineyards to her,
and the Valley of Achor as a door of hope.
She will respond there as in the days of her youth,
and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.
16 (Isa 54:5; Hos 2:7) On that day, declares the Lord,
you will call Me, "My husband,"
and will no longer call Me, "My Baal." Or My master.
17 (Ex 23:13; Jos 23:7) I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth,
and they will no longer be remembered by their name.
18 (Eze 34:25; Isa 2:4; Jer 23:6) On that day, I will make a covenant for them
with the beasts of the field, with the fowls of heaven,
and with the creeping things of the ground.
I will break the bow and the sword and the battle
from the earth,
and will make them to lie down safely.
19 (Jer 3:14-15; 2Co 11:2) I will take you for My wife forever.
I will take you for My wife in righteousness and in justice,
in mercy and in compassion.
20 (Jer 31:33-34; Jn 17:3) I will take you for My wife in faithfulness,
and you will know the Lord.
21 (Zec 8:12) On that day I will answer,
declares the Lord;
I will answer the heavens,
and they will answer the earth.
22 (Hos 1:4; 1:11) The earth will answer the grain,
the wine, and the oil;
and they will answer Jezreel.
23 (Hos 1:6; Jer 31:27) Then I will sow her for Myself in the earth.
I will have mercy upon Lo-Ruhamah,
and I will say to Lo-Ammi, "You are My people,"
and they will say, "You are my God."
[14] Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the
wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her.
[15] And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor
for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth,
and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.
[16] And it shall be at that day, saith the LORD, that thou shalt call me
Ishi; and shalt call me no more Baali.
[17] For I will take away the names of Baalim out of her mouth, and they
shall no more be remembered by their name.
[18] And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the
field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the
ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the
earth, and will make them to lie down safely.
[19] And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto
me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies.
[20] I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know
the LORD.
[21] And it shall come to pass in that day, I will hear, saith the LORD, I
will hear the heavens, and they shall hear the earth;
[22] And the earth shall hear the corn, and the wine, and the oil; and they
shall hear Jezreel.
[23] And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her
that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my
people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God.
Hosea 3
Hosea Redeems His Wife
1 (Jer 3:20; Hos 1:2-3) Then the Lord said to me, "Go, again, love a woman
who is loved by a lover and is committing adultery, just as the Lord loves
the children of Israel, who look to other gods and love raisin cakes."
2 (Lev 27:16; Eze 45:11) So I purchased her for myself for fifteen shekels
of silver, and for a homer of barley, and a half homer of barley.
3 (Dt 21:13) Then I said to her, "You will remain with me many days.
You will not play the whore, and you will not belong to another man.
And also I will be with you."
4 (Jdg 17:5; Ge 31:19; Ex 28:4) For the children of Israel will remain
many days without a king and without a prince, without a sacrifice
and without a standing stone, and without an ephod and teraphim.
5 (Isa 2:2; Jer 30:9) Afterward the children of Israel will return
and seek the Lord their God and David their king.
They will come in fear to the Lord and to His goodness in the latter days.
[1] Then said the LORD unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend,
yet an adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of
Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.
[2] So I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of
barley, and an half homer of barley:
[3] And I said unto her, Thou shalt abide for me many days; thou shalt not
play the harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be
for thee.
[4] For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and
without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and
without
an ephod, and without teraphim:
[5] Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their
God, and David their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the
latter days.
Hosea 4
God Accuses Israel
1 (Jer 4:22; Mic 6:2) Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel,
for the Lord has a dispute
with the inhabitants of the land:
There is no truth or mercy,
and no knowledge of God in the land.
2 (Hos 6:9; 7:1) Swearing, lying, and killing,
and stealing and adultery
break out,
and bloodshed follows bloodshed.
3 (Zep 1:3; Jer 4:25) Therefore the land dries up,
and everyone who lives in it withers
with the beasts of the field
and the birds of the sky;
even the fish of the sea disappear.
4 (Dt 17:12; Hos 4:17) Yet let no one contend,
and let none reprove another,
for your people are like those
that contend with a priest.Meaning of Heb. uncertain.
5 (Jer 15:8; Hos 2:2) You will stumble in the day,
and the prophet also will stumble with you in the night,
and I will destroy your mother.
6 (Isa 5:13; Hos 4:1) My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Because you have rejected knowledge,
I will reject you from being My priest.
And because you have forgotten the law of your God,
I will also forget your children.
7 (Hos 13:6; 1Sa 2:30) As they increased, so they sinned against Me.
I will change Or like/at Adam. their glory
MT; Ancient Heb. tradition My glory. into shame.
8 (Isa 56:11; Mic 3:11) They feed upon the sin of My people,
and they are greedy for their iniquity.
9 (Isa 24:2; Jer 5:31) It will be like people, like priest.
I will punish them for their ways
and reward them for their deeds.
10 (Lev 26:26; Mic 6:14) They will eat, but not be satisfied;
they will play the whore, but not multiply,
because they have forsaken the Lord
by devoting themselves to
11 (Pr 20:1; Isa 28:7; 5:12) harlotry;
wine and new wine
take away understanding.
The Idolatry of Israel
12 (Jer 2:27; Hos 5:4) My people seek counsel from their wood,
and their staff informs them.
For the spirit of harlotry has led them astray,
and they have played the whore in defiance of their God.
13 (Isa 1:29; Jer 3:6) They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains,
and burn incense upon the hills
under oak, poplar, and elm
because their shade is good.
Therefore your daughters play the whore,
and your daughters-in-law commit adultery.
14 (Hos 4:1) I will not punish your daughters
when they play the whore,
nor your daughters-in-law
when they commit adultery.
For the men separate themselves with whores,
and they sacrifice with cult prostitutes.
A people without understanding will come to ruin.
15 (Hos 9:15; 12:11) Though you play the whore, O Israel,
do not let Judah offend.
Do not come to Gilgal,
or go up to Beth Aven,
and do not swear, "As the Lord lives."
16 Like a stubborn heifer,
Israel is stubborn.
Now will the Lord feed them
like a lamb in a wide pasture?
17 (Ps 81:12; Hos 4:4) Ephraim is joined to idols;
let him alone.
18 (Mic 3:11) Their drink has soured,
they have played the whore continually.
Her rulers dearly love shame.
19 (Isa 1:29; Jer 51:1) A wind has wrapped her in its wings,
and they will be ashamed because of their sacrifices.
[1] Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a
controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth,
nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
[2] By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing
adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
[3] Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein
shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven;
yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
[4] Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they
that strive with the priest.
[5] Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall
with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.
[6] My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast
rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no
priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God,
I will also forget thy children.
[7] As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I
change their glory into shame.
[8] They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their
iniquity.
[9] And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them
for their ways, and reward them their doings.
[10] For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom,
and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the
LORD.
[11] Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.
[12] My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto
them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have
gone a whoring from under their God.
[13] They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon
the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is
good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your spouses
shall commit adultery.
[14] I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your
spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with
whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that doth not
understand shall fall.
[15] Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and
come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Beth-aven, nor swear, The LORD
liveth.
[16] For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will
feed them as a lamb in a large place.
[17] Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.
[18] Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her
rulers with shame do love, Give ye.
[19] The wind hath bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed
because of their sacrifices.
Hosea 5
Judgment Against Israel and Judah
1 (Hos 9:8; 6:9) Hear this, O priests!
Pay attention, O house of Israel!
Listen, O house of the king!
For the judgment is for you,
because you have been a snare at Mizpah
and a net spread over Tabor,
2 (Hos 9:15; Isa 29:15) and a pit dug deep in Shittim;
but I will discipline them all.
3 (Am 3:2) I know Ephraim,
and Israel is not hidden from Me;
for now, O Ephraim, you have played the whore.
Israel is defiled.
4 (Hos 4:12) Their deeds do not allow them
to return to their God;
for a spirit of harlotry is in their midst,
and they do not know the Lord.
5 (Hos 7:10; Eze 23:31-35) The pride of Israel testifies against him.
Israel and Ephraim stumble in their iniquity.
Judah also stumbles with them.
6 (Pr 1:28; Mic 6:6-7) With their flocks and their herds they will go
to seek the Lord,
but they will not find Him.
He has withdrawn from them.
7 (Hos 6:7; Isa 48:8) They have dealt faithlessly with the Lord,
for they have given birth to illegitimate children.
Now the New Moon will devour them
along with their portion.
War, Wrath, and Repentance
8 (Hos 9:9; 1Sa 15:34) Blow the horn in Gibeah,
and the trumpet in Ramah.
Cry aloud at Beth Aven,
"Look behind you, O Benjamin!"Or "After you, O Benjamin!"
9 (Isa 46:10; Hos 9:11-17) Ephraim will become desolate
in the day of punishment.
Among the tribes of Israel
I make known that which is sure.
10 (Dt 19:14; 27:17) The princes of Judah have become
like those who remove a boundary marker.
Upon them I will pour out
My wrath like water.
11 (Dt 28:33; Mic 6:16) Ephraim is oppressed
and broken in judgment,
because he eagerly followed after vanity.
12 (Isa 51:8; Job 13:28) Therefore I will be like pus to Ephraim
and like rottenness to the house of Judah.
13 (Hos 7:11; Jer 30:12) When Ephraim saw his sickness
and Judah saw his wound,
then Ephraim went to Assyria,
and sent to King Jareb.Or the great king.
Yet he cannot cure you
or heal your wound.
14 (Ps 7:2; Mic 5:8) For I will be like a lion to Ephraim
and like a young lion to the house of Judah.
I, Myself, will tear and go away.
I will carry off, and no one will rescue.
15 (Jer 2:27; Lev 26:40-42) I will again return to My place
until they acknowledge their offense
and seek My face.
In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me.
[1] Hear ye this, O priests; and hearken, ye house of Israel; and give ye
ear, O house of the king; for judgment is toward you, because ye have
been a snare on Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor.
[2] And the revolters are profound to make slaughter, though I have been a
rebuker of them all.
[3] I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hid from me: for now, O Ephraim, thou
committest whoredom, and Israel is defiled.
[4] They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God: for the spirit
of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known the LORD.
[5] And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face: therefore shall
Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity; Judah also shall fall with them.
[6] They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD;
but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them.
[7] They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten
strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions.
[8] Blow ye the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah: cry aloud at
Beth-aven, after thee, O Benjamin.
[9] Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of
Israel have I made known that which shall surely be.
[10] The princes of Judah were like them that remove the bound: therefore I
will pour out my wrath upon them like water.
[11] Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly
walked after the commandment.
[12] Therefore will I be unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the house of Judah
as rottenness.
[13] When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went
Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not heal you,
nor cure you of your wound.
[14] For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house
of Judah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none
shall rescue him.
[15] I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence,
and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.
Hosea 6
A Call to Repentance
1 (Dt 32:39; Jer 50:4) Come, let us return to the Lord,
for He has torn, and He will heal us. He has struck,
and He will bind us up.
2 (1Co 15:4) After two days He will revive us.
On the third day He will raise us up, that we may live before Him.
3 (Ps 72:6; Job 29:23) Let us know, let us press on to know the Lord.
His appearance is as sure as the dawn. He will come to us like the rain;
like the spring rains He will water the earth. Impenitence of Israel and Judah
4 (Hos 11:8; 13:3) What shall I do to you, O Ephraim?
What shall I do to you, O Judah? Your faithfulness is like a morning cloud,
and like the early dew it goes away.
5 (Jer 23:29; 1:10) Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets.
I have killed them by the words of My mouth,
and My [Gk. Syr.: Heb. Your.] judgments go forth like light.
6 (Mt 9:13; 12:7) For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice,
and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
7 (Hos 5:7; 8:1) But like men [Or like/at Adam.]
they have transgressed the covenant. There they dealt faithlessly with Me.
8 (Hos 12:11) Gilead is a city of evildoers, polluted with blood.
9 (Hos 7:1; 5:1) As robbers lie in wait for someone, so a company of priests
murder on the way to Shechem. They commit a shameful deed.
10 (Hos 5:3; Jer 5:30-31) I have seen a horrible thing in the house of Israel.
The harlotry of Ephraim is there; Israel is defiled.
11 (Joel 3:13; Jer 51:33) Also, O Judah, a harvest is appointed for you,
when I restore the fortunes of My people.
[1] Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will
heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.
[2] After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up,
and we shall live in his sight.
[3] Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is
prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the
latter and former rain unto the earth.
[4] O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto
thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it
goeth away.
[5] Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the
words of my mouth: and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth.
[6] For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more
than burnt offerings.
[7] But they like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt
treacherously against me.
[8] Gilead is a city of them that work iniquity, and is polluted with blood.
[9] And as troops of robbers wait for a man, so the company of priests
murder in the way by consent: for they commit lewdness.
[10] I have seen an horrible thing in the house of Israel: there is the
whoredom of Ephraim, Israel is defiled.
[11] Also, O Judah, he hath set an harvest for thee, when I returned the
captivity of my people.
Hosea 7
1 (Hos 4:2; 6:4) When I would heal Israel,
the iniquity of Ephraim is revealed,
and the wickedness of Samaria.
For they deal deceitfully;
the thief breaks in;
the robbers raid outside,
2 (Jer 2:19; 14:10) but they did not consider in their hearts
that I remember all their wickedness.
Now their own deeds surround them;
they are before My face.
Corrupt and Disloyal Politics
3 (Mic 7:3; Ro 1:32) They make the king glad with their wickedness,
and the princes with their lies.
4 (Jer 9:2) They are all adulterers,
like an oven heated by a baker,
who ceases stirring the fire
after kneading the dough until it is leavened.
5 (Isa 28:1) On the day of our king the princes made him sick
from the heat of wine.
He stretched out his hand with scorners.
6 For they are kindled [Gk. Syr.: Heb. brought near.] like an oven.
Their heart burns within them;Or while they lie in wait.
their anger smolders [Or Their baker sleeps.] all night;
in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
7 (2Ki 15:10; 15:14) They are all hot as an oven,
and they devour their judges.
All their kings have fallen,
and none of them calls to Me.
8 (Ps 106:35; Hos 5:13) Ephraim mixes himself with the people.
Ephraim is a cake not turned.
9 (Hos 8:7) Foreigners devour his strength,
but he does not know it.
Gray hairs are here and there upon him,
but he does not know it.
10 (Isa 9:13; Hos 5:5) The pride of Israel testifies against him,
but they do not return to the Lord their God,
nor seek Him for all this.
11 (Hos 5:13; 12:1) Ephraim is like a dove,
silly and without sense;
they call to Egypt,
they go to Assyria.
12 (Eze 12:13; Dt 28:15-68) Wherever they go, I will spread My net over them;
I will bring them down like the birds of the sky;
I will discipline them according to
the report to their congregation.
13 (Hos 9:12; 11:12) Woe to them,
for they have fled from Me!
Destruction to them,
for they have rebelled against Me!
Though I would redeem them,
yet they speak lies against Me.
14 (Am 2:8; Jdg 9:27) They do not cry to Me with their heart
when they howl on their beds.
They gather together for grain and wine,
they rebel against Me.
15 (Na 1:9) Though I trained and strengthened their arms,
yet they devise mischief against Me.
16 (Ps 78:57; Hos 9:3) They return, but not to the Most High.
They are like a loose bow.
Their princes will fall by the sword
for the rage of their tongue.
This will be their derision
in the land of Egypt.
[1] When I would have healed Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim was
discovered, and the wickedness of Samaria: for they commit falsehood; and
the thief cometh in, and the troop of robbers spoileth without.
[2] And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their
wickedness: now their own doings have beset them about; they are before my
face.
[3] They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their
lies.
[4] They are all adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker, who ceaseth
from raising after he hath kneeded the dough, until it be leavened.
[5] In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of
wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners.
[6] For they have made ready their heart like an oven, whiles they lie in
wait: their baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it burneth as a
flaming fire.
[7] They are all hot as an oven, and have devoured their judges; all their
kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth unto me.
[8] Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not
turned.
[9] Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray
hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not.
[10] And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return
to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this.
[11] Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt,
they go to Assyria.
[12] When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them
down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them, as their
congregation
hath heard.
[13] Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: destruction unto them!
because they have transgressed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet
they have spoken lies against me.
[14] And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon
their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel
against me.
[15] Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine
mischief against me.
[16] They return, but not to the most High: they are like a deceitful bow:
their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this
shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.

Slow-Walking Sin Out the Door
Proverbs 28:13-18
13 (Job 31:33; Ps 32:3-5) He who covers his sins will not prosper,
but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.
14 (Pr 23:17; Isa 66:2) Happy is the man who always fears,
but he who hardens his heart will fall into mischief.
15 (Mt 2:16; 1Pe 5:8) As a roaring lion and a charging bear,
so is a wicked ruler over the poor people.
16 (Isa 3:12) The prince who lacks understanding is also a great oppressor,
but he who hates covetousness will prolong his days.
17 (Ge 9:6; Ex 21:14) A man burdened with bloodshed of any person
will flee until death; let no man help him.
18 (Pr 10:9; 28:6) Whoever walks uprightly will be saved,
but he who is perverse in his ways will fall at once.
[13] He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and
forsaketh them shall have mercy.
[14] Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart
shall fall into mischief.
[15] As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the
poor people.
[16] The prince that wanteth understanding is also a great oppressor: but he
that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.
[17] A man that doeth violence to the blood of any person shall flee to the
pit; let no man stay him.
[18] Whoso walketh uprightly shall be saved: but he that is perverse in his
ways shall fall at once.
Winston knows he's not supposed to chew them. So he's adopted a sly strategy.
We call it slow-walking. If Winston spies a discarded, unguarded shoe, he'll
casually meander in that direction, grab it, and just keep walking. Slowly.
Nothing to see here. Right out the door if no one notices.
"Uh, Mom, Winston just slow-walked your shoe out the door."
It's apparent that sometimes we think we can "slow-walk" our sin past God.
We're tempted to think that He won't notice. It's no big deal, we
rationalise-whatever "it" is. But, like Winston, we know better.
We know those choices don't please God.
Like Adam and Eve in the garden, we may try to hide due to the shame of our
sin (Genesis 3:10) or pretend like it didn't happen. But Scripture invites us
to do something very different: to run to God's mercy and forgiveness.
Proverbs 28:13 tells us, "Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper,
but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy."
We don't have to try to slow-walk our sin and hope no one notices. When we
tell the truth about our choices-to ourselves, to God, to a trusted friend
-we can find freedom from the guilt and shame of carrying secret sin
(1 John 1:9).

Reflect & Pray
Are there any ways you're sometimes tempted to "slow-walk" your sin?
What barriers keep you from confession?
Heavenly Father, thank You that my sin doesn't have
the last word. Help me to remember, as I tell You and others the truth,
that I can be confident of Your mercy and forgiveness.

Week 8 Guided by Grace Day 4 - Send for Help !
James 1:5
5 (Pr 2:3-6; Jn 15:7) If any of you lacks wisdom,
let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally
and without criticism, and it will be given to him.
5 If any of you lack wisdom,
let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally,
and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
A new employee in an electronics plant had the responsibility
for overseeing one machine. The machine worked fine when the young man
came on duty, but soon it began to run a bit rough. The employee
tinkered with the machine, trying to "fix" it, until finally if stopped
working altogether
In fear and trembling the worker sent for the foreman, and stammered,
"I - I, well, sir, I did my best to fix it."
"Son", the foreman thundered, "you need to know only one thing. Around
here, doing you best means sending for me!"
Wisdom, James 1:5 says, has its source in God alone. And if we are
to attain wisdom, we need to learn doing our best means sending for God.
Often we spend time tinkering with our lives or the the lives of others.
We don't think to as God for his wisdom in the decisions we must take;
instead, we use our human reasoning and take our best guess.
But the path to wisdom does not lie in guesswork. The scriptures
give us clear indication of God's direction for his people, and through Bible
study, application, prayer, and meditation,
we can understand what God wants to reveal to us.
"If any of you lacks wisdom," James says, "he should ask God, who gives
generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him."
The first step to attaining wisdom is recognising that we are not wise.
The second step is to ask. And God, who is faithful to his Word
and His people, will respond.
Application
a) Under what circumstances have I tinkered with my life,
making it worse rather then fixing it?
b) What practical steps can I take to ask God for wisdom?

Your will be done

30 days of prayer for the Muslim World 24 April to 23 May 2020
Under the Keep Praying page
When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,
"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even on My menservants and maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below:
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
21 And whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."[a]

- Pray for Christian workers an organisations focused on seeing effective
discipleship movements among Muslim people.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to continue to inspire you to have god's heart for
Muslims, to see them as He does, and to be the light that then to Jesus.
Matthew 5:14-15 : 14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a
hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under
a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the
house."
Ideas for prayer
- Pray for opportunities to show the love of Christ to Muslims around you
- Pray for, and offer generous hospitality to, those you know who are serving
Christ among Muslim people -
Romans 12:13 "contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality."
- When you gather with fellow believers, remember to pray for Muslims
throughout the year and encourage them to also participate in 30 Days!
And
Thank you for praying through the
5 Days of Prayer for Sikhs.
"My name is Kam. I'm 29 years of age, and I grew up Sikh. As a teenager,
I struggled with depression, brokenness, and addiction to
cannabis. I didn't know how to stop or how to get help.
Then a friend invited me to church. As I spent time with Christians
and heard the message of the Gospel, I experienced the
love of Jesus Christ, and it was like nothing I'd known before.
One night I had a dream where I saw Him - a figure surrounded by
light who I knew was Jesus, the light of the world.
As I began to understand the gospel message, I encountered a reassuring and
confident solution to the problem of sin. I knew that I needed a solution
to my sin problem, and I gave my life to Christ.
Slowly, God began to heal my broken heart and my addiction.
Nine years have passed, and I am a devoted husband and a father
to two beautiful boys. I grow deeper in love with Jesus each day.
I ask you to continue praying with me, and others around the world, for Sikhs.
God is the only one who can draw people to Himself. He works in and through
the prayers of His people. I want Sikhs to know the freedom
and healing that is only available through Jesus Christ."
13 (Ro 14:17; 12:12) Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy
and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope,
through the power of the Holy Spirit.
[13] Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that
ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

7 (Jer 2:2; Hos 5:13) She will pursue her lovers, but she will not reach them;
and she will seek them but will not find them.
[2] Plead with your mother, plead: for she is not my wife, neither am I her
husband: let her therefore put away her whoredoms out of her sight, and her
adulteries from between her breasts;
[7] And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them;
and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then shall she say, I will
go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now.
21 (Zec 8:12) On that day I will answer,
declares the Lord;
I will answer the heavens,
and they will answer the earth.
22 (Hos 1:4; 1:11) The earth will answer the grain,
the wine, and the oil;
and they will answer Jezreel.
[20] I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know
the LORD.
[21] And it shall come to pass in that day, I will hear, saith the LORD, I
will hear the heavens, and they shall hear the earth;
3 (Zep 1:3; Jer 4:25) Therefore the land dries up,
and everyone who lives in it withers
with the beasts of the field
and the birds of the sky;
even the fish of the sea disappear.
10 (Lev 26:26; Mic 6:14) They will eat, but not be satisfied;
they will play the whore, but not multiply,
because they have forsaken the Lord
by devoting themselves to
11 (Pr 20:1; Isa 28:7; 5:12) harlotry;
wine and new wine
take away understanding.
The Idolatry of Israel
12 (Jer 2:27; Hos 5:4) My people seek counsel from their wood,
and their staff informs them.
For the spirit of harlotry has led them astray,
and they have played the whore in defiance of their God.
13 (Isa 1:29; Jer 3:6) They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains,
and burn incense upon the hills
under oak, poplar, and elm
because their shade is good.
Therefore your daughters play the whore,
and your daughters-in-law commit adultery.
14 (Hos 4:1) I will not punish your daughters
when they play the whore,
nor your daughters-in-law
when they commit adultery.
For the men separate themselves with whores,
and they sacrifice with cult prostitutes.
A people without understanding will come to ruin.
15 (Hos 9:15; 12:11) Though you play the whore, O Israel,
do not let Judah offend.
Do not come to Gilgal,
or go up to Beth Aven,
and do not swear, "As the Lord lives."
16 Like a stubborn heifer,
Israel is stubborn.
Now will the Lord feed them
like a lamb in a wide pasture?
17 (Ps 81:12; Hos 4:4) Ephraim is joined to idols;
let him alone.
[3] Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein
shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven;
yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
For the judgment is for you,
because you have been a snare at Mizpah
and a net spread over Tabor,
2 (Hos 9:15; Isa 29:15) and a pit dug deep in Shittim;
but I will discipline them all.
3 (Am 3:2) I know Ephraim,
and Israel is not hidden from Me;
for now, O Ephraim, you have played the whore.
Israel is defiled.
4 (Hos 4:12) Their deeds do not allow them
to return to their God;
for a spirit of harlotry is in their midst,
and they do not know the Lord.
[6] They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD;
but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them.
His appearance is as sure as the dawn. He will come to us like the rain;
like the spring rains He will water the earth.
For they deal deceitfully;
the thief breaks in;
the robbers raid outside,
2 (Jer 2:19; 14:10) but they did not consider in their hearts
that I remember all their wickedness.
Now their own deeds surround them;
they are before My face.
Corrupt and Disloyal Politics
3 (Mic 7:3; Ro 1:32) They make the king glad with their wickedness,
and the princes with their lies.
4 (Jer 9:2) They are all adulterers,
like an oven heated by a baker,
who ceases stirring the fire
after kneading the dough until it is leavened.
5 (Isa 28:1) On the day of our king the princes made him sick
from the heat of wine.
He stretched out his hand with scorners.
6 For they are kindled [Gk. Syr.: Heb. brought near.] like an oven.
Their heart burns within them;Or while they lie in wait.
their anger smolders [Or Their baker sleeps.] all night;
in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
11 (Hos 5:13; 12:1) Ephraim is like a dove,
silly and without sense;
they call to Egypt,
they go to Assyria.
12 (Eze 12:13; Dt 28:15-68) Wherever they go, I will spread My net over them;
I will bring them down like the birds of the sky;

We don't think to as God for his wisdom in the decisions we must take;
instead, we use our human reasoning and take our best guess.
Application
a) Under what circumstances have I tinkered with my life,
making it worse rather then fixing it?
b) What practical steps can I take to ask God for wisdom?

to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.
17 (Mt 28:9) When they saw Him, they worshipped Him. But some doubted.
18 (Mt 11:27; Ro 14:9) Then Jesus came and spoke to them, saying,
"All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit,

The Lord's prayer
Matthew 6:9-13
9 "Therefore pray in this manner:
Our Father who is in heaven,
hallowed be Your name.
10 (Mt 3:2; 4:17) Your kingdom come;
Your will be done
on earth, as it is in heaven.
11 (Pr 30:8; Isa 33:16) Give us this day our daily bread.
12 (Ex 34:7; Ps 32:1) And forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors.
13 (1Co 10:13; Jn 17:15) And lead us not into temptation,

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."
9 After this manner therefore pray ye:
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,
"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
21 And whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."[a]
Footnotes
Acts 2:21 Joel 2:28-32.
