Remediation is the term that refers to the removal of pollution or contaminants from environmental media such as soil, groundwater, sediment, or surface water for the general protection of human health and the environment.

For the purpose of this document, remediation refers to the removal of mould contaminants from indoor environments. These indoor environments include but are not limited to commercial, industrial, office, multiple family dwellings, and other residential structures.

Remediation is generally subject to an array of regulatory requirements, and also can be based on assessments of human health and ecological risks where no legislated standards exist or where standards are advisory.

Mould Remediation is...

The effective removal of mould growth and settled spores to a level that is less than or equal to typical background or outside levels.

The ultimate goal of remediation is to insure that a structure can be reoccupied by it’s occupants without adverse reactions.

Mould is normally found indoors at levels that do not affect most healthy individuals. When these levels become abnormally high as determined by indoor air quality testing or a mould inspection remediation is recommended to be carried out by a professional remediation company.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) deals with the content of interior air that could affect health and comfort of building occupants. The IAQ may be compromised by microbial contaminants (mould, bacteria), chemicals (such as carbon monoxide, radon), allergens, or any mass or energy stressor that can induce health effects.

The presence of mould should be suspected if there is visible moisture (condensation) on building surfaces or if there has been water damage, for example, due to roof leaks, plumbing failures, or flooding. The presence of moulds may also be indicated by a musty odour.

Recent findings have demonstrated that indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air (albeit with different pollutants) although this has not changed the common understanding of Air pollution. In fact, indoor air is often a greater health hazard than the corresponding outdoor setting.

Using ventilation to dilute contaminants, filtration, source control, and removal of contaminants are the primary methods for improving indoor air quality in most buildings.
