Digital Breast Tomosynthesis creates a three-dimensional picture of the breast using x-rays.

This is a new imaging technology which was developed to improve visualization of structures within the breast by obtaining multiple images at different levels in the breast.

The x-ray tube moves in an arc across the breast taking a series of low dose images at different angles. The information is reconstructed into 1 mm slices and the images appear on a monitor screen for the radiologist.

The difference as compared with standard 2D mammograms is the same as the difference between a chest x-ray and a CT scan . one is three-dimensional, the other is flat.

Recent studies have shown that because of the ability of Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) to reduce overlapping tissue, it can reduce unnecessary recalls for additional investigation as well as increase cancer detection.
