Plans to Build the Temple



2Ch 2:1-18



1 (2Sa 5:11; 1Ch 14:1) Now Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon,

for he had heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father,

and Hiram had always loved David.

2 (2Ch 2:3)And Solomon sent word to Hiram, saying,

3 (1Ch 28:3; 22:8) "You know how David my father was unable to build a house

for the name of the Lord his God because of the wars all around him,

until the Lord put his enemies under his feet.

4 (1Ki 4:24; 1Ch 22:9) But now the Lord my God has given me peace

on every side, so that there is neither adversary nor misfortune.

5 (1Ch 17:12; 22:10) So know that I plan to build a house to honor the name

of the Lord my God, just as the Lord spoke to my father David, saying,

'Your son, whom I will set on your throne after you,

shall build a house to honor My name.'

6 (2Ch 2:8) "Now therefore command that cedar trees from Lebanon be

cut down for me, and my servants shall be with your servants,

and I will pay your servants whatever you command, for you know

that there are none among my people who can cut timber like the Sidonians."

7 When Hiram heard the words of Solomon, he rejoiced greatly and said,

"Blessed be the Lord this day, who has given David

a wise son over this great people."

8 Hiram sent to Solomon, saying,

"I have considered the things which you contacted me about,

and I will do all you asked concerning timber of cedar and fir.

9 (Ezr 3:7; Eze 27:17) My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon

to the sea, and I will send them by sea in floats to the place that you shall

name and will cause them to be discharged into your care there,

and in return you will meet my wishes by giving food for my household."

10 So Hiram gave Solomon cedar trees and fir trees as he desired.

11 (2Ch 2:10) Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand kors

[Likely about 3,600 tons, or 3,250 metric tons.] of wheat for his household

and twenty baths

[About 120,000 gallons, or 440,000 liters.] of pure oil. This is what Solomon

gave to Hiram each year.

12 (1Ki 3:12; Am 1:9) The Lord gave Solomon wisdom, as He promised,

and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon as they made a treaty together.

13 (1Ki 9:15; 4:6) King Solomon drafted men from all Israel,

totaling 30000 men.

14 He sent them to Lebanon in turns, ten thousand a month,

with each spending a month in Lebanon and two months at home.

Adoniram administered the labor force.

15 (1Ki 9:20-22; 2Ch 2:17-18) Solomon had seventy thousand porters

and eighty thousand stonecutters in the mountains,

16 (1Ki 9:23; 2Ch 2:2) not counting the chief of Solomon's officers

who were over the work, three thousand three hundred,

who ruled over the people who did the work.

17 (1Ki 6:7; 1Ch 22:2) At the king's command, they quarried out great,

costly stones in order to lay the foundation of the house with dressed stones.

18 (Jos 13:5; Eze 27:9) Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders, along

with the stonemasons, cut them and prepared timber and stones

to build the house.



1 Kings 5

Building the Temple

1 And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; for he had heard that

they had anointed him king in the room of his father: for Hiram was ever a

lover of David.

2 And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying,

3 Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house unto the

name of the LORD his God for the wars which were about him on every side,

until the LORD put them under the soles of his feet.

4 But now the LORD my God hath given me rest on every side, so that there

is neither adversary nor evil occurrent.

5 And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God,

as the LORD spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set

upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name.

6 Now therefore command thou that they hew me cedar trees out of Lebanon;

and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee will I give hire

for thy servants according to all that thou shalt appoint: for thou knowest

that there is not among us any that can skill to hew timber like unto the

Sidonians.

7 And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced

greatly, and said, Blessed be the LORD this day, which hath given unto David a

wise son over this great people.

8 And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have considered the things which thou

sentest to me for: and I will do all thy desire concerning timber of cedar,

and concerning timber of fir.

9 My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea: and I will

convey them by sea in floats unto the place that thou shalt appoint me, and

will cause them to be discharged there, and thou shalt receive them: and thou

shalt accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.

10 So Hiram gave Solomon cedar trees and fir trees

according to all his desire.

11 And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his

household, and twenty measures of pure oil: thus gave Solomon to Hiram year

by year.

12 And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him: and there was peace

between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league together.

13 And king Solomon raised a levy out of all Israel; and the levy was thirty

thousand men.

14 And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses: a month they

were in Lebanon, and two months at home: and Adoniram was over the levy.

15 And Solomon had threescore and ten thousand that bare burdens,

and fourscore thousand hewers in the mountains;

16 beside the chief of Solomon's officers which were over the work, three

thousand and three hundred, which ruled over the people that wrought

in the work.

17 And the king commanded, and they brought great stones, costly stones,

and hewed stones, to lay the foundation of the house.

18 And Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders did hew them, and the

stonesquarers: so they prepared timber and stones to build the house.

Plans for Building the Temple



1 Ki 5:1-16

1 (1Ki 5:5; Dt 12:5) Now Solomon wanted to build a temple for the name

of the Lord and a royal house for his kingship.

2 (2Ch 2:18; 1Ki 5:15-16) And Solomon designated seventy thousand men

to carry materials, eighty thousand men to cut stone in the hills,

and three thousand six hundred supervisors to oversee these men.

3 (1Ch 14:1; 2Sa 5:11) And Solomon sent word to Hiram [Huram in the Heb.

text. king of Tyre] saying,

"As you did for David my father and sent him cedar trees in order to build

for himself a house in which to dwell, so deal with me.

4 (Ex 30:7; 25:30) I am going to build a temple for the name of the Lord

my God, sanctified for Him, for making sacrifices before Him,

and for incense of fragrant spices, and for the continual showbread,

for burnt offerings on both morning and evening, and for Sabbaths,

New Moons, and appointed feasts of the Lord our God,

as an ordinance forever for Israel.

5 (1Ch 16:25; Ex 15:11) "And the house that I am building will be great

because our God is greater than all other gods.

6 (1Ki 8:27; 2Ch 6:18) But who is able to build a house for Him,

since the heavens and the highest heavens cannot contain Him?

Who am I that I build a house for Him, except to make offerings before Him?

7 (Ex 31:3-5; 1Ch 22:15-16) "Now may you send to me a wise man who works

with gold, silver, bronze, iron, and in purple, crimson, and violet threads

and knows how to engrave, who will be with the skilled workers

and me in Judah and Jerusalem, which David my father established.

8 (1Ki 5:6) "And may you send me trees of cedar, cypress, and algum

from Lebanon because I realize that your slaves know how to cut timber

in Lebanon; and my servants will be alongside your servants,

9 to prepare an abundance of timber for me, because the temple that I will

build will be great and marvelous.

10 (1Ki 5:11) I will provide for the woodsmen, your servants who cut timber,

twenty thousand dry kors [Likely about 3,600 tons, or 3,200 metric tons]

of wheat. of crushed wheat, twenty thousand kors

[Likely about 3,000 tons, or 2,700 metric tons] of barley. of barley,

twenty thousand liquid baths

[About 120,000 gallons, or 440,000 liters.] of wine, and twenty thousand

liquid baths of oil."

11 (1Ki 10:9; 2Ch 9:8) Then Hiram king of Tyre responded

in a letter that he sent to Solomon,

"Because the Lord loves His people, He has made you king over them."

12 (Ps 33:6) And Hiram said,

"Blessed be the Lord God of Israel who made heaven and earth

and has given King David a wise son, having insight and understanding,

who is building a temple for the Lord and a royal house for his kingship.

13 "And now I have sent a skilled man, endowed with understanding, Huram-Abi,

14 (2Ch 2:7) the son of a woman from the daughters of Dan

and the son of a man of Tyre, who knows gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone,

wood, and purple, violet, blue, and crimson threads, and who knows how

to make all types of engravings and to devise every type of design

that is given to him, with your skilled men and the skilled men of my lord

David your father.

15 (2Ch 2:10)"Now the wheat, the barley, the oil, and the wine that my lord

has declared, may he send these items to his slaves.

16 (Jos 19:46; 1Ki 5:8-9) And let us cut the timber from Lebanon,

whatever you need, and we will bring it to you on rafts on the sea to Joppa,

and you will bring it up to Jerusalem."



2 Chronicles 2

Building the Temple

1 And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the LORD, and

an house for his kingdom.

2 And Solomon told out threescore and ten thousand men to bear burdens,

and fourscore thousand to hew in the mountain,

and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them.

3 And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou didst deal

with David my father, and didst send him cedars to build him an house

to dwell therein, even so deal with me.

4 Behold, I build an house to the name of the LORD my God, to dedicate it

to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual shewbread,

and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the

new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the LORD our God. This is an ordinance

for ever to Israel.

5 And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods.

6 But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of

heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house,

save only to burn sacrifice before him?

7 Send me now therefore a man cunning to work in gold, and in silver, and in

brass, and in iron, and in purple, and crimson, and blue, and that can skill

to grave with the cunning men that are with me in Judah and in Jerusalem,

whom David my father did provide.

8 Send me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon: for

I know that thy servants can skill to cut timber in Lebanon; and, behold,

my servants shall be with thy servants,

9 even to prepare me timber in abundance: for the house which I am about

to build shall be wonderful great.

10 And, behold, I will give to thy servants, the hewers that cut timber,

twenty thousand measures of beaten wheat, and twenty thousand measures of

barley, and twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil.

11 Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon,

Because the LORD hath loved his people, he hath made thee king over them.

12 Huram said moreover, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, that made heaven

and earth, who hath given to David the king a wise son, endued with prudence

and understanding, that might build an house for the LORD, and an house

for his kingdom.

13 And now I have sent a cunning man, endued with understanding, of Huram

my father's,

14 the son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, and his father was a man

of Tyre, skilful to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, in iron,

in stone, and in timber, in purple, in blue, and in fine linen,

and in crimson; also to grave any manner of graving, and to find out every

device which shall be put to him, with thy cunning men,

and with the cunning men of my lord David thy father.

15 Now therefore the wheat, and the barley, the oil, and the wine, which

my lord hath spoken of, let him send unto his servants:

16 and we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as thou shalt need:

and we will bring it to thee in floats by sea to Joppa;

and thou shalt carry it up to Jerusalem.



Foreign Labour



17 (1Ch 22:2) Then Solomon numbered all the male foreigners who were

in the land of Israel, after the census that David his father had taken.

And there were found one hundred and fifty-three thousand six hundred.

18 (2Ch 2:2) And he made seventy thousand of them to carry materials,

eighty thousand to cut stone in the hills, and three thousand six hundred

supervisors to make the people work.



17 And Solomon numbered all the strangers that were in the land of Israel,

after the numbering wherewith David his father had numbered them;

and they were found

an hundred and fifty thousand and three thousand and six hundred.

18 And he set threescore and ten thousand of them to be bearers of burdens,

and fourscore thousand to be hewers in the mountain,

and three thousand and six hundred overseers to set the people a work.

Solomon Builds the Temple



(2Ch 3:1-14)

1 (2Ch 3:1-2; Ac 7:47) In the four hundred and eightieth year

after the children of Israel came out of the land of Egypt,

in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month Ziv

(which is the second month), he began to build the house of the Lord.

2 (Eze 40:1-41; 41:1-15) The house which King Solomon built for the Lord

had a length of sixty cubits, a width of twenty cubits,

and a height of thirty cubits. [About 90 feet long, 30 feet wide,

and 45 feet high, or 27 meters long, 9 meters wide, and 14 meters high.]

3 The porch in front of the temple was twenty cubits

[About 30 feet, or 9 meters; and in vv. 16 and 20. in length,]

the same as the width of the house, and ten cubits

[About 15 feet, or 4.5 meters; and in vv. 23-26. deep in front of the house.

4 (Eze 40:16; 41:16) He made beveled windows for the house.

5 (1Ki 6:16; 6:19-21) He also built a structure against the wall of the house,

running around the walls of the house, both of the temple

and of the inner sanctuary, and he made side chambers all around.

6 The lowest story was five cubits

[About 7 1/2 feet, or 2.3 meters; and in vv. 10 and 24.]

broad, the middle one was six cubits [About 9 feet, or 2.7 meters. ]

broad, and the third was seven cubits [About 11 feet, or 3.2 meters.]

broad. For around the outside of the house, he made offsets on the wall

so that the supporting beams should not be inserted

into the walls of the house.

7 (Dt 27:5-6) The house was built of stone prepared at the quarry,

so that neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron was heard

in the house while it was being built.

8 The door for the middle chamber was in the right side of the house,

and it had winding stairs into the middle chamber

and out of the middle into the third.

9 (1Ki 6:14; 6:38) So he built the house and finished it and covered it

with beams and boards of cedar.

10 Then he built chambers against the whole house, five cubits high,

and they rested on the house with timber of cedar.

11 Now the word of the Lord came to Solomon, saying,

12 (1Ch 22:10) "Concerning this house which you are building,

if you will walk in My statutes and execute My judgments and keep all

My commandments and walk in them, then I will carry out My word

with you, which I spoke to David your father,

13 ( Ex 25:8; Dt 31:6) and I will dwell among the people of Israel

and will not forsake My people Israel."



1 Kings 6

1 And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the

children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year

of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the second month,

that he began to build the house of the LORD.



The House of the Lord



2 And the house which king Solomon built for the LORD, the length thereof was

threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits, and the height

thereof thirty cubits.

3 And the porch before the temple of the house, twenty cubits was the length

thereof, according to the breadth of the house; and ten cubits was the breadth

thereof before the house.

4 And for the house he made windows of narrow lights.

5 And against the wall of the house he built chambers round about, against the

walls of the house round about, both of the temple and of the oracle: and he

made chambers round about:

6 the nethermost chamber was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits

broad, and the third was seven cubits broad: for without in the wall of the

house he made narrowed rests round about, that the beams should not be

fastened in the walls of the house.

7 And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before

it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool

of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.

8 The door for the middle chamber was in the right side of the house: and they

went up with winding stairs into the middle chamber, and out of the middle

into the third.

9 So he built the house, and finished it; and covered the house with beams

and boards of cedar.

10 And then he built chambers against all the house, five cubits high:

and they rested on the house with timber of cedar.

11 And the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying,

12 Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in

my statutes, and execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk

in them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David

thy father:

13 and I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake

my people Israel.

Solomon Builds the Temple



1Ki 6:1-29



1 (1Ch 21:18; Ge 22:2) So Solomon began to build the house of the Lord

in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where He appeared to David his father,

at the place that David established

on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

2 He began to build in the second month Ziv or Iyyar in the Hebrew calendar.

on the second day during the fourth year of his reign.

(April or May in 966 BC.)

3 (1Ki 6:2-3) These are the foundation measurements that Solomon

used for building the house of God. The cubit [The Egyptian cubit

had a royal measure of 20.6 inches (52.3cm)

and a commercial measure of 17.6 inches (44.7 cm). ] The cubit standards

in Egypt and Mesopotamia were slightly different. length in the former

standard measure was sixty cubits and the width twenty cubits.

[About 90 feet long and 30 feet wide, or 27 meters long and 9 meters wide].

4 The porch vestibule that was in front of the nave hall had its length,

like the width of the house, as twenty cubits,

[About 30 feet, or 9 meters; and in vv. 8, 11, and 13.]

and its height was one hundred and twenty cubits;

[About 180 feet, or 54 meters. ]

and he overlaid the inside with pure gold.

5 And he paneled the great house with cypress trees and then covered it

with fine gold. Then he decorated it with palm trees and chain work.

6 And he overlaid the house with precious stones for decoration,

and the gold was from Parvaim.

7 (1Ki 6:20-22) And he covered the house-its beams, thresholds,

walls, and doors-with gold, and he engraved cherubim on the walls.

8 (Ex 26:33) Then he made the dwelling of the Most Holy Place.

Its length was as the width of twenty cubits, and its width

also twenty cubits; and he covered it with fine gold, six hundred talents

[About 23 tons, or 21 metric tons. ] worth.

9 And the weight in gold for the nails was fifty shekels.

[About 1 1/4 pounds, or 575 grams.] And he covered the upper chamber in gold.

10 (1Ki 6:23-28) Then in the dwelling of the Most Holy Place, he made

two cherubim that were cast metal and overlaid them with gold.

11 And the wings of the cherubim were the length of twenty cubits.

The wing of one cherub was five cubits, reaching the wall of the house,

and the wing of the other was five cubits,

[About 7 1/2 feet, or 2.3 meters; and in v. 15. ]reaching to the wing

of the other cherub.

12 And the wing of this cherub was five cubits, reaching to the other wall

of the house, and the other wing was five cubits, touching the wing

of the first cherub.

13 So the wings of these cherubim spread out were twenty cubits;

they were upright on their feet facing inward toward the house.

14 (Heb 9:3) Then he made the curtain of violet, purple, crimson,

and blue thread, and he wove cherubim into it.



2 Chronicles 3

The Temple Building

1 Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount

Moriah, where the LORD appeared unto David his father, in the place that

David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

2 And he began to build in the second day of the second month,

in the fourth year of his reign.

3 Now these are the things wherein Solomon was instructed for the building

of the house of God. The length by cubits after the first measure

was threescore cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits.

4 And the porch that was in the front of the house, the length of it was

according to the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and the height was

an hundred and twenty: and he overlaid it within with pure gold.

5 And the greater house he cieled with fir tree, which he overlaid with

fine gold, and set thereon palm trees and chains.

6 And he garnished the house with precious stones for beauty:

and the gold was gold of Parvaim.

7 He overlaid also the house, the beams, the posts, and the walls thereof,

and the doors thereof, with gold; and graved cherubims on the walls.

8 And he made the most holy house, the length whereof was according to the

breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits:

and he overlaid it with fine gold, amounting to six hundred talents.

9 And the weight of the nails was fifty shekels of gold.

And he overlaid the upper chambers with gold.

10 And in the most holy house he made two cherubims of image work,

and overlaid them with gold.

11 And the wings of the cherubims were twenty cubits long: one wing

of the one cherub was five cubits, reaching to the wall of the house:

and the other wing was likewise five cubits, reaching to the wing of

the other cherub.

12 And one wing of the other cherub was five cubits, reaching to the wall

of the house: and the other wing was five cubits also, joining to the wing

of the other cherub.

13 The wings of these cherubims spread themselves forth twenty cubits:

and they stood on their feet, and their faces were inward.

14 And he made the vail of blue, and purple, and crimson,

and fine linen, and wrought cherubims thereon.



2 Chronicles 3:15-17



15 And he made two pillars in front of the house35 cubits

[About 53 feet, or 16 meters. high, ] with a five cubit capital on the top

of the pillar.

16 (1 Ki 7:20) Then he made ornamental chain work,

like in the Most Holy Place, and set it on the top of the pillars.

Then he designed a hundred pomegranates and set them on the chain work.

17 (1Ki 7:21) He then raised the pillars in front of the temple, with one

on the right to the south and the other on the left to the north,

and the pillar to the south he called Jakin,

and the pillar to the north he called Boaz.



15 Also he made before the house two pillars of thirty and five cubits high,

and the chapiter that was on the top of each of them was five cubits.

16 And he made chains, as in the oracle, and put them on the heads of the

pillars; and made an hundred pomegranates, and put them on the chains.

17 And he reared up the pillars before the temple, one on the right hand,

and the other on the left; and called the name of that on the right hand

Jachin, and the name of that on the left Boaz.



1 Kings 6



14 (1Ki 6:9; 6:38) So Solomon built the house and finished it.

15 (1Ki 7:7) He built the interior walls of the house with boards of cedar.

From the floor of the house to the ceiling, he covered them on the inside

with wood; and he covered the floor of the house with planks of fir.

16 (1Ki 8:6; 2Ch 3:8) He lined twenty cubits on the sides of the house,

both the floor and the walls, with boards of cedar, and he even lined

them within, even the inner sanctuary and the Most Holy Place.

17The house, that is, the nave in front of the inner sanctuary,

was forty cubits [About 60 feet, or 18 meters. long. ]

18 (1Ki 7:24) The cedar of the house within had carvings of gourds

and open flowers. All was cedar. There was no stone seen.

19 He prepared the inner sanctuary in the inner part of the house

in order to set there the ark of the covenant of the Lord.

20 The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide,

and twenty cubits high. He overlaid it with pure gold.

He also overlaid the altar of cedar.

21 So Solomon overlaid the interior of the house with pure gold,

and he made a partition with gold chains in front of the inner sanctuary,

and he overlaid it with gold.

22 (Ex 30:1; 30:3) He overlaid the whole house with gold as well as

the whole altar that was by the inner sanctuary.

23 (Ex 37:7-9) Within the inner sanctuary, he made two cherubim

from olive wood, each ten cubits high.

24 One wing of the cherub was five cubits, and the other wing

was also five cubits. From the furthest part of the one wing

to the furthest part of the other was ten cubits.

25 The other cherub was ten cubits. Both the cherubim were

the same shape and size.

26 The height of the one cherub was ten cubits,

and so was that of the other cherub.

27 (Ex 25:20; 37:9) He set the cherubim within the inner sanctuary,

and they stretched forth the wings of the cherubim, so that the wing

of the one touched the one wall and the wing of the other cherub

touched the other wall, and their wings touched

one another in the middle of the house.

28 He overlaid the cherubim with gold.

29 (1Ki 6:32) He carved all the walls of the house with carved figures

of cherubim and palm trees and open flowers both inside and out.

30 He overlaid the floor of the house with gold, both inside and out.

31 For the entrance to the inner sanctuary, he made doors of olive wood;

the lintel and doorposts were 5-sided.

32 The two doors were also made of olive wood. He carved on them cherubim,

palm trees, and open flowers, overlaid them with gold, and spread gold upon

the cherubim and upon the palm trees.

33 So also he made for the entrance to the nave four-sided posts of olive wood.

34 (Eze 41:23-25) The two doors were made from fir tree,

with two leaves of each door folding.

35 He carved on them cherubim and palm trees and open flowers and covered them

with gold fitted upon the carved work.

36 (1Ki 7:12) He built the inner court with three rows of hewed stone

and a row of cedar beams.

37 (1Ki 6:1) In the fourth year, in the month Ziv,

the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid,

38 and in the eleventh year, in the month Bul (which is the eighth month),

the house was completely finished. All the details and plans were met.

So he took seven years to build it.



14 So Solomon built the house, and finished it.

15 And he built the walls of the house within with boards of cedar,

both the floor of the house, and the walls of the cieling:

When the Titanic hit an iceberg in April 1912, Pastor John Harper

secured a spot for his six-year-old daughter in one of the limited

number of lifeboats. He gave his life-vest to a fellow passenger

and shared the gospel with anyone who would listen. As the vessel

sank and hundreds of people awaited an unlikely rescue, Harper swam

from one person to another and said,

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31 kjv).



During a meeting for survivors of the Titanic in Ontario, Canada,

one man referred to himself as "the last convert of John Harper."

Having rejected Harper’s first invitation, the man received Christ

when the preacher asked him again. He watched as Harper devoted

the last moments of his life to sharing Jesus before succumbing

to hypothermia and sinking below the surface of the icy water.



In his charge to Timothy, the apostle Paul encourages a similar

urgency and dedication to selfless evangelism. Affirming God's

constant presence and the inevitable return of Jesus, Paul charges

Timothy to preach with patience and precision (2 Timothy 4:1-2).

The apostle reminds the young preacher to remain focused,

though some people will reject Jesus (vv. 3-5).



Our days are limited, so every moment counts. We can be confident

that our Father secured our spot in heaven as we proclaim, "Jesus saves!"

Jackie's preschool class took on an exciting project: they were going to grow

flowers from seeds, Each child took the seed, planted it carefully in the

bedding soil, watered, and waited. But Jackie couldn't wait. Every day

for a week he ran to the window box, looked for his plants, poked, prodded,

unplanted the seeds and then planted them again. "It's no use,"

he pouted after the first week. "Nothing's gonna grow in there."

We live in an instant society - microwave dinners, quick fixes, easy answers.

We are conditioned by our environment to expect - even to demand -

immediate response, and when we have to wait,

we become impatient and irritable.

Paul's exhortation to the Galatians, "Let us not become weary in doing good,"

is as appropriate for twentieth-century believers as it was for the new church

at Galatia. We lose motivation when we don't see results,

and weariness sets in.

If our work does not seem to be producing as we hope, we want to abandon it

and move on to a new project.

But God says, "You will reap a harvest if you don't give up." We give up too

soon in our prayers for a loved one's salvation. We abandon hope too readily

when we don't see spiritual growth in our own lives, when our investment in

another's spiritual maturity seems to have no return. The Lord says,

"The harvest is coming; be patient; trust me."

In due season the harvest comes; when it's the right time. When the seed has

had time to germinate, when the roots are string enough, when the conditions

are right, the reaping time will come. But we must be willing to wait for

the due season, the moment of ripeness, when our labor brings its return.



Application



a) Have I ever felt that my spiritual labours have produced no harvest at all?

for reaping the harvest?

There is a growing Muslim population in Quebec City and a smattering

of Muslims scattered around the rest of the province, yet the vast majority

of Muslims live in the greater Montreal area. n fact, 23% of Canada's Muslim

population live in Quebec. Why is that? It is largely because Francophone

African Muslims are attracted to La Belle Provence.

And here's an interesting, perhaps even shocking fact: There are more

Muslims in Montreal than there are evangelical Christians.

This is one demographic factor creates a challenging environment for churches

and believers here: The size of the available 'workforce' is small

by comparison to begin with. Believers are already is a host culture that

is often either indifferent to religion or resistant to it. And now

this 'new' religious community of Muslims - many of whom do not visibly

or socially conform to Quebec society - are a growing population. It might br

easy for Christians to feel overwhelm by this cultural double-whammy,

yet God has always worked miracles through the small, the few.

Agree in prayer for :



- The people of Quebec, Muslim or otherwise, to be open to the Gospel

- for Muslims who are encountering believers and responding

-for a new group of Muslim background believers who are meeting

together for worship!

- For pastors and believers to be full of passion, faith and vision for

reaching Muslims in Quebec.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month

and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days

of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.



For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.



You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"



Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:



- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,

"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;

your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.

18 Even on My menservants and maidservants

I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.

19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below:

blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,

and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.

I struggled with depression, brokenness, and addiction to

cannabis. I didn't know how to stop or how to get help.
