BOOK THREE

Psalms 73-89



A Psalm of Asaph.



1 Truly God is good to Israel,

to the pure in heart.

2 (Ps 63:1; 84:2) But as for me, my feet almost stumbled;

my steps had almost slipped.

3 (Ps 79:10; 80:5) For I was envious at the boastful;

I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

4 (Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8) For there are no pains in their death;

their bodies are fat.

5 (Ps 42:11; 43:5) They are not in trouble as other people;

nor are they plagued like others.

6 (2Sa 17:22; Dt 3:8-9) Therefore pride is their necklace;

violence covers them as a garment.

7 (Ps 88:7; Jnh 2:3) Their eyes bulge with fatness;

they have more than a heart could wish.

8 (Job 35:10; Ps 63:6) They mock and speak with evil oppression;

they speak loftily.

9 (Ps 38:6; 18:2) They set their mouth against the heavens,

and their tongue struts through the earth.

10 (Ps 42:3; Joel 2:17) Therefore people turn to them,

and abundant waters are drunk by them.

11 (Ps 42:5; 43:5) They say, "How does God know?

And is there knowledge with the Most High?"

12 Observe, these are the wicked, always at ease;

they increase in riches.

13 Surely I have kept my heart pure for nothing,

and washed my hands in innocence.

14 For all the day long I am plagued,

and chastened every morning.

15 If I said, "I will speak thus,"

I would have betrayed the generation of Your children.

16 When I thought to understand this,

it was troublesome in my eyes,

17 until I went into the sanctuary of God;

then I understood their end.

18 Surely You have set them in slippery places;

You have brought them down to ruin.

19 How they come to desolation, as in a moment!

They have come to an end, utterly consumed with terrors.

20 As a dream when one awakes,

so, O Lord, when You awake,

You will despise their form.

21 Thus my heart was embittered,

and I was pierced in my feelings.

22 I was a brute and did not understand;

I was as a beast before You.

23 Nevertheless I am continually with You;

You have held me by my right hand.

24 You will guide me with Your counsel,

and afterward receive me to glory.

25 Whom have I in heaven but You?

And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides You.

26 My flesh and my heart fails,

but God is the strength of my heart

and my portion forever.

27 For those who are far from You will perish;

You destroy everyone who is unfaithful to You.

28 But it is good for me to draw near to God;

I have taken my refuge in the Lord God,

that I may declare all Your works.



Psalm 73

[1] Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.

[2] But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.

[3] For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the

wicked.

[4] For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.

[5] They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like

other men.

[6] Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them

as a garment.

[7] Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.

[8] They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak

loftily.

[9] They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh

through the earth.

[10] Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung

out to them.

[11] And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most

High?

[12] Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase

in riches.

[13] Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in

innocency.

[14] For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.

[15] If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the

generation of thy children.

[16] When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;

[17] Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.

[18] Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down

into destruction.

[19] How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly

consumed with terrors.

[20] As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt

despise their image.

[21] Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.

[22] So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.

[23] Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my

right hand.

[24] Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to

glory.

[25] Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I

desire beside thee.

[26] My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and

my portion for ever.

[27] For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed

all them that go a whoring from thee.

[28] But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the

Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.



PSALMS 77



For the Music Director. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of Asaph.

1 I cried out to God with my voice,

even to God with my voice; and He listened to me.

2 (Ps 63:1; 84:2) In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord;

in the night my hand is stretched out and does not weary,

my soul refuses to be comforted.

3 (Ps 79:10; 80:5) I remember God, and I groan;

I complain, and my spirit is overwhelmed. Selah

4 (Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8) You hold my eyelids open;

I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

5 (Ps 42:11; 43:5) I have considered the days of old,

the years long ago.

6 (2Sa 17:22; Dt 3:8-9) May I remember my song in the night;

may I meditate in my heart;

my spirit made a diligent search:

7 (Ps 88:7; Jnh 2:3) "Will the Lord cast off forever,

and will He be favorable no more?

8 (Job 35:10; Ps 63:6) Has His mercy ceased forever,

and have His promises failed for all time?

9 (Ps 38:6; 18:2) Has God forgotten to be gracious,

and has He in anger shut up His tender mercies?" Selah

10 (Ps 42:3; Joel 2:17) Then I said, "This is my grief;

yet I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High."

11 (Ps 42:5; 43:5) I will remember the works of the Lord;

surely I will remember Your wonders of old.

12 I will meditate also on all Your work

and ponder on Your mighty deeds.

13 Your way, O God, is holiness;

what god is as great as our God?

14 You are the God who can do wonders;

You have declared Your strength among the nations.

15 You have with Your arm redeemed Your people,

the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

16 The waters saw You, O God.

The waters saw You; they were afraid;

the depths also trembled.

17 The clouds poured out water;

the skies thundered.

Your arrows flashed about.

18 The sound of Your thunder was in the whirlwind,

and Your lightning lit up the world;

the earth trembled and shook.

19 Your way is through the sea,

and Your path in the great waters,

and your footsteps are not seen.

20 You led Your people like a flock

by the hand of Moses and Aaron.



Psalm 77

[1] I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave

ear unto me.

[2] In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night,

and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.

[3] I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was

overwhelmed. Selah.

[4] Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

[5] I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.

[6] I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own

heart: and my spirit made diligent search.

[7] Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?

[8] Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?

[9] Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender

mercies? Selah.

[10] And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the

right hand of the most High.

[11] I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy

wonders of old.

[12] I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.

[13] Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?

[14] Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength

among the people.

[15] Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and

Joseph. Selah.

[16] The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee; they were afraid: the

depths also were troubled.

[17] The clouds poured out water: the skies sent out a sound: thine arrows

also went abroad.

[18] The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened

the world: the earth trembled and shook.

[19] Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy

footsteps are not known.

[20] Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
