1 Samuel 24

[1] And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the

Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the

wilderness of En-gedi.

[2] Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to

seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.

[3] And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul

went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of

the cave.

[4] And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD

said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that

thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and

cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.

[5] And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he

had cut off Saul's skirt.

[6] And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing

unto my master, the LORD's anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him,

seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.

[7] So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to

rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

[8] David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after

Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David

stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.

[9] And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying,

Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?

[10] Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered

thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine

eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord;

for he is the LORD's anointed.

[11] Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand:

for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe and killed thee not, know thou

and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I

have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.

[12] The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but

mine hand shall not be upon thee.

[13] As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the

wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.

[14] After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue?

after a dead dog, after a flea.

[15] The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see,

and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.

[16] And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words

unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted

up his voice, and wept.

[17] And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast

rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.

[18] And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me:

forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst

me not.

[19] For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore

the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.

[20] And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that

the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.

[21] Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my

seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's

house.

[22] And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men

gat them up unto the hold.

From Death to Life



1 (Col 2:13; Lk 15:24) And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,

2 (Jn 12:31; Eph 6:12; 2:3) in which you formerly walked according

to the age of this world and according to the prince of the power of the air,

the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,

3 (Gal 2:15-16; Ps 51:5) among them we all also once lived in the lusts

of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind,

and we were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

4 (Ro 2:4; Eph 1:7) But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love

with which He loved us,

5 (Eph 2:1; Ac 15:11; Eph 2:8) even when we were dead in sins, made us alive

together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

6 (Eph 1:3) and He raised us up and seated us together in the heavenly places

in Christ Jesus,

7 (Titus 3:4; Eph 2:4) so that in the coming ages He might show

the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

8 (Eph 2:5; Mk 16:16) For by grace you have been saved through faith,

and this is not of yourselves. It is the gift of God,

9 (2Ti 1:9; Ro 3:20) not of works, so that no one should boast.

When Mark was pulled over by an officer for driving while intoxicated, he was

afraid his college football career was over. He was sure he was going to jail.

But the policeman instead dropped him off at his college. When Mark asked why,

he said, "I'm giving you grace."



Still, the young man was certain his coach would find out, and he'd lose his

scholarship. So when his coach asked to see Mark after practice the next day,

he was very apprehensive. Surprisingly the coach said, "I know what happened

last night, but I'm giving you grace."

He then suggested that Mark consider attending church the next Sunday.



He went. And guess what the pastor talked about? The grace of Jesus in

offering us salvation when we don't deserve it. Mark got the message. That

day, he trusted Jesus as Saviour, and he spent the rest of his life serving

Him - starting a ranch for boys who need a second chance - who need grace.



It's by God's grace that believers in Jesus "have been saved" (Ephesians 2:8).

Grace does what good works can't do (v. 9; Romans 11:6). It's a gift provided

by Jesus' sacrifice on the cross.



The burden of our sin doesn't have to weigh us down. As Mark discovered, God's

grace can free us and give us life "to the full" (John 10:10).

Week 7 Promises of Grace - Day 2 - Due Season



Gal 6:9



9 And let us not grow weary in doing good,

for in due season we shall reap, if we do not give up.



9 And let us not be weary in well doing:

for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.



Jackie's preschool class took on an exciting project: they were going to grow

flowers from seeds, Each child took the seed, planted it carefully in the

bedding soil, watered, and waited. But Jackie couldn't wait. Every day

for a week he ran to the window box, looked for his plants, poked, prodded,

unplanted the seeds and then planted them again. "It's no use,"

he pouted after the first week. "Nothing's gonna grow in there."

We live in an instant society - microwave dinners, quick fixes, easy answers.

We are conditioned by our environment to expect - even to demand -

immediate response, and when we have to wait,

we become impatient and irritable.

Paul's exhortation to the Galatians, "Let us not become weary in doing good,"

is as appropriate for twentieth-century believers as it was for the new church

at Galatia. We lose motivation when we don't see results,

and weariness sets in.

If our work does not seem to be producing as we hope, we want to abandon it

and move on to a new project.

But God says, "You will reap a harvest if you don't give up." We give up too

soon in our prayers for a loved one's salvation. We abandon hope too readily

when we don't see spiritual growth in our own lives, when our investment in

another's spiritual maturity seems to have no return. The Lord says,

"The harvest is coming; be patient; trust me."

In due season the harvest comes; when it's the right time. When the seed has

had time to germinate, when the roots are string enough, when the conditions

are right, the reaping time will come. But we must be willing to wait for

the due season, the moment of ripeness, when our labor brings its return.

a) Have I ever felt that my spiritual labours have produced no harvest at all?

for reaping the harvest?
