Doctor Who A christmas Carol reviewed

9/10 !!

One imperfection!

Great start and yeah a bit of a Star Trek holiday ship rip off I must

admit!!

The Doctor first begs for the lives of those on board and gets the boot.

He then here a Christmas Carol and decides to play Dickens.

I do not fault Moffatt for the interference in Time Travel.

That actually enhnces to the art.

And this is fun ( Anyone for a Doctor Who and MArilyn Monroe meetup?)

What I did not like was the young Sarkis meeting the old Sarkis.

Anyone recall Maydryn Undead and what one brigadier did to another?

Also, political power and influence, Moffatt weaves these themes well.

Well casted!!

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Doctor Who might be the world's most perfect series because it never has to end. (Let's ignore the hiatus in the 1990s.)

On the air nonconsecutively since 1963, Who comes with a built-in reboot system: a lead whose alien properties allow him to regenerate his body (letting a new actor fill old shoes). So fans who know where to look already will be aware of the Doctor's latest incarnation: He has gone from plucky-yet-worldly-wise David Tennant to bow-tie-wearing goof Matt Smith, who debuts Saturday, April 17 at 9 p.m. ET on Space.

Additionally, his travelling time machine, the TARDIS, has been revamped into a steampunker's dream, and his travelling companion has gotten even younger, perhaps to match up with Smith's wide-open, baby face.

There's little to be said about Who that fans don't know; for example, they probably know just how the series is going to find a loophole in the Doctor's 13-regeneration limit (Smith is No. 11). But newcomers to the series owe it to themselves to start making this appointment television as it's some of the best-produced, cheekiest and imaginative storytelling on the tube.

It's family-friendly and adult-pleasing, over-the-top and nightmarish, witty and deep all at the same time: "You are not of this world," someone tells the Doctor; the longtime saviour of Earth replies, "No, but I've put a lot of work into it."

Hard to tell how Smith's Doctor stands up yet. He spends a long time doing slapstick spit-takes with a child in her kitchen, and easing into the main plot (a spaceship run by a giant eyeball is seeking a prisoner who hides in the girl's home) takes time. But by the time the Doctor's full powers regain strength, Smith finds his feet and summons the menace and authority to make that eyeball blink. In that moment, he becomes the Doctor.

However, there's a dismaying trend away from scary and into silly in the Doctor trend (Christopher Eccleston, the first since the 2005 series re-start, was eccentric and sinister even when laughing). But the fact is, the Brits know how to be self-deprecating and tell a ripping yarn at the same time. Those just now hopping into that big blue box for a trip around space and time are in for a treat, because even when imperfect, Doctor Who is always worth keeping your eye on.

Doctor Who series 5 news round-up by Simon Brew

From Den of Geek :

More casting news, episode titles, and filming locations, as we gather together the latest Doctor Who stories…

Published on Feb 4, 2010

Firstly, we should address the series numbering confusion. We're plumping for calling the upcoming run of Doctor Who series five for the time being, given that it's the fifth series since the BBC revived the show. We're traditionalists at heart, so would like to go with a different number (and certainly not the series one that the BBC is reportedly touting Matt Smith's adventures as), but series 5 seems to be the one most people are centering on. So we'll stick with it for the minute. We figure we're going to make someone unhappy whichever we plump for.

Anyway, on with the latest news round-up...

The latest issue of Doctor Who magazine has revealed the first three episode titles for the upcoming series of the show. The first two stories, both written by Steven Moffat, will be The Eleventh Hour and The Beast Below. Then Mark Gatiss' Victory Of The Daleks will be third in line.

Sophie Okonedo is lined up to appear in the new series. We understand that the actress, who starred in the film Hotel Rwanda, is playing someone by the name of Liz Ten, and will turn up in the second episode of the new run. The story was reported by The Sun, but we'd heard this one before, and believe it to be true.

Filming for the show has headed to Stonehenge over the last week. If you want to read more about that, and beware that there are spoilers, then follow this link.

Finally, and this should be taken with a pinch of salt as it's coming from the Daily Star, it's been reported that the Doctor will have two assistants during the new series. We know about Karen Gillan as Amy Pond who comes with a back story and fiancée of her own, apparently, but there's also another companion due to hop on board the Tardis later in the series. As we said though, it's the Daily Star.

Doctor Who returns to our screens in the spring.

End of Time - Review with spoilers

9.2 out of 10 . I was going to say 9.5/10 but RTD's Long goodbye really

kills it down.

Excellent performance even Timothy Dalton is great

(Who wanted him ditch as JAmes Bond, mistake)!

Tennant gives a grand bow out.

RTD does repeat theme as the Corrupt Gallifrey (see Trial of a Time Lord

and 5 Doctors) very well.

Gallifrey could come back, but a Battle Royale should

happen from 11 to 12 to cure the Time Lock Issue!

Even John Simm as the Master is funny and insane. Loved it.

The Doctor is back and even MAtt Smith is Funny

(Hope he can fix the TARDIS).

End of TIme ie is it the End ofthe Time Lords?

In fact there were in the wrong side of time to return.

Also President Rassilon? Something is wrong here.

I doubt the original Rassilon will approve.

I look forward to MAtt Smith.

The twists and turns in End of Time is GRAND.

None of the TARDIS in ex machina. Thr RTD and Tennant eras

go out on a high note!

Simply I am overwhelmed.

Review of Waters of Mars

8/10 and this had the potential of Topping Turn Right.

The Ending reminds me of Death Comes to TIme, good build up but

ends of a sour note.

Nice to see a mention of the Dalek and the Ice Warriors (nostalgia

works for me).

Start pretty good (THe Doctor gets blamed for the start of an incident).

Ancient MArs (Anyone recalls the Fendahl tkaing MARs out).

What kills it for me The Time Lord Victorious.

Thank RTD for the religious mockery in GridLock

AND moral the power nuttiness in the end of Water of MArs.

Instead Adelaide commits suicide in meaninglessness

(meninglessness and purposelessness is a major RTD Theme)

and shakes the Doctor.

1) Bring back Gallifrey! I doubt they are 'dead'

(Note how many time the Daleks have reappeared from the Time War)

2) Get back to meaningful themes.

If Moffatt going along with meaninglessness of life like RTD

bot RTD and Moffatt are going to make JN-T look like a genius!

Doctor Who NS3 E12/E13 - The Sound of Drums / The Last of the TimeLords

Before Rating this, congratulations to the

CBC for merging these 2 back to back creating

the effect of a continuous drama that flowed smoothly.

7.1/10 .

So you need a Time Lords to Escape trouble .

Dare I say big deal.

The Master did a job of posing as the predominant

Saxon trying to trap the Doctor all this time. So the Master is Lumic

with Arch Angel. Can RTD please try something unique?

For all the Bad there is, the combined 2 tells us why

we as humanity should fight corruption and never give up

hope.

These are are a pale imitation of Rise of the Cybermen/ Age of Steel

using Utopia as the driving paradox. I know this is supposed to be scifi,

but RTD take up scientific logic to improve on your constitency.

Still some wonder Master versus Doctor moments for

times gone by.

You have to wonder if the Time Lords did escape and became

human.

Jack who is the Face of Bo will always remember

this moment forever.

Martha Jones now see her importance as a Doctor in the world.

I look forward to Christmas with Kylie.

Doctor Who NS3 E11 - Utopia

8/10 or 4/5

This one really wraps many of the element of Doctor Who Since

Jon Pertwee.

So the TARDIS picks up Captain Jack after he jumps for it.

I still like the blogging reference.

This pushes the TARDIS to future plus, but what surprises

awaits?

So future indicates humanity would be animals of still the same.

Let's look look at the silo where you are identified by teeth and most of the action takes place.

IT is run by Professor Yana or that Y.A.N.A.

Tying up loose ends.

Jack survived via Rose from the Heart of the TARDIS. So much

that when he went from Year 200100 to 1869 then waited for

the Doctor to 2007 that he does not age. He is so immortal that

he can walk into a room full of radiation and not get ill.

Y.A.N.A. You are not alone . The other Time Lord Bo refers to.

In fact the 'watch' managed to keep the Master alive for a long time

(wasn't he swallowed by the TARDIS) and then there is the reference

to the Daemons.

The watch or rather the chameleon arch. First seen is a redo

of Human Nature is also found on Professor Yana (so

where is his TARDIS?). Still a brillian arc.

YEs the Doctor gets a rocket going but the key to this is to

reintroduce the Master who regenerates into a younger person,

Saxon!!

So Saxon aka the Master knew about the Spider and the rhinos

but this happened earlier in the Doctor's life.

So time travel is not time linear in this case.

I look forward ot the back to back next week.

Doctor Who NS3 E10 - Blink

8/10 .

Super mystery with whatever looks normal is not.

Opening:

Sally Sparrow comes to a delapidated house in the middle of London.

She takes photographs of the deserted house only to see a message

in the wall from 1969 (my year of birth).

Strange what effect writing on the wall would have. Stone Angel?

Now how would anyone know about this event?

Sally comes back to her friend Cathy Nightingale's house and see the DVDs

with the Doctor (she does not know it is the Doctor).

All right, and she tells Ms. Nightingale about the delapidated house.

Both Sparrow and Nightingale (ITV joke) decides to investigate. Sally is a bit odd. They both look at the statue and Sally notices the Angel is a bit closer.

Why would someone be ringing at the door. Nice young gentlemen asking for Sally Sparrow and asks for id to make certain it is Sally Sparrow. The young man he is Catherine Nightingale's grandson.

Wasn't Catherine Nightingale looking about and then touch by an angel sending her back to 1920 Hull? 4 angel statues are standing on the upstairs with one having the key in its hand. She takes the key.

In the letter she says Lawrence is the only surviving member of the family

and to let him know she loves him .

Sally shows up at the DVD store and sees the Doctor yet again. Spooky and stressed she makes for the police after listening to Lawrence's mate

making a remark on a movie.

Turns out this is where she meets Inspector Shipton and he explains the mystery of the delapidated house including cars of people who have disappeared and the Police Box. The Angels appear just after Sally leave her number with DI Shipton, however Shipton disappears to 1969 touched by an angel. There he meets the Doctor and Martha.

The Doctor want Billy Shipton to deliver a message.

Sally Sparrow realising the key could be the key to the Police Box

turns back and notes the Police Box is missing with extra door open.

She is called by Shipton, an older Shipton.

She is surprised to see the older Shipton and even his story is similar to Cathy Nightingale. Shipton makes mention of the list.

Sally is slowly putting the pieces together realizing that the 17 DVDs are all the DVDs she owns and asks Lawrence to meet her at the abandoned mansion in London with the DVDs.

At the Mansion Sally makes sense of the Message with Lawrence only to

realize they are under threat from an alien species that sounds like inverse Medusa.

They note that they were observing a weeping angel only to see it getting closer and looking very hideous.

Lawrence is left to look at the creature while Cathy tries to find a way out.

Cathy finds the cellar (why a light) and Lawrence dashes toward her direction.

3 of the angels are there and then the 4th does appear trying to turn off the light.

Sally and Lawrence fight their way while the menacing angels try to

seize the TARDIS.

Once in, Lawrence and Sally activate the holographic messaging system.

Lawrence has the correct DVD and the angel shake the TARDIS up.

Successful at slotting the DVD, the TARDIS make for 1969 and the Angels

have looked at each other turning themselves into stone.

2008 Lawrence is trying to get Sally to let go of the events of last year.

As Lawrence goes for milk, Sally sees the Doctor and Martha and gives

him the transcript in order to save himself.

The end is rather forboding with the DVD os the Doctor and statues around .

Doctor Who NS3 E9 - The Family of Blood

8/10 or 4/5 .

Both parts 8/10 or 4/5.

PAul Cornell shows us why he is a good DW writer.

Picking up in mid term, the Village dance comes under siege by the Family of Blood.

Tim Latimer has the Doctor's fob and know how to use this properly. Tim does remind me

of the little girl in Fear Her, just that Tim seems to be more confident in himself.

Everyone distracted, Martha grabs the gun and everyone is out.

Tim calls John Smith freaky, but later all should be forgiven.

With most of the villagers running for safety and the Doctor going back to school

the real battle begins.

What ensues is the Martha and Joan, the Matron is trying to sort out where the fob is.

Matron does show what 1913 is like saying black women cannot become medical doctors.

I love it when Martha proves her wrong.

The Doctor, the Headmaster and student are preparing to due battle.

The sister of Blood is sent in as a spy. She confronts Latimer and

she get the essence of Time Lord. So the target is Latimer and the Fob.

The battle begins. The army of scarecrows breaks in.

Can someone tell me why RTD chose a hymn as a backdrop for the

shooting.

The Family of Blood does not care who they kill. Even a headmaster is not spared.

Retreat it is. some student are caught, but Latimer provides enough of a distraction

for everyone to get away. Can you say Nimon every time Doctor John Smith

oes in and tries to find survivors only to find scarecrows?

Finally retreat, the Doctor, Matron Joan and Martha Jones to the Cartwrights.

Tim joins the Doctor and party at the Cartwrtights.

The Family of Blood decides to attack the village and the Doctor

must decide to revert.

Both Matron and the Doctor hold the fob and they both see a possible future.

Matron reading the Doctor's journal help him to make the decision.

Supposedly John Smith shows up at the craft. After you know the doctor makes the

appearance and destroys the craft.

Father of Blood is chained up in dwarf star alloy, reminds me of Warrior's Gate.

Mother of Blood is caught in an event horizon like a Fendahl SKull.

Sister of Blood is trapped in mirrors.

Bother of Blood is a scarecrow through England.

Matron does say farewell and keep The Doctor's diary.

Tim Lamiter says goodbye to the Doctor.

Years later you see Latimer and Hutchison in the trenches of France.

It must be 80 or 90 years later

you see old Latimer with the watch.

You are correct in the UK when you said you enjoyed this.

Doctor Who NS3 E8 - Human Nature

8/10 or 4/5

Reasonable told.

The Start - The Doctor thinks he is John Smith Teacher and dreams of being the Doctor the Adventurer.

Throughout you see the Doctor relationships with humans such as the matron and Martha.

You meet Timothy , doesn't he remind you of the girl in Fear Her.

What about the bully boys and the Family taking people over. Not that frightening until

the end where the Family crashes the party killing 2 people and threatens that the

Doctor back to being human. Timothy still holds the key with the fob watch.

I cannot wait until next week.

Doctor Who NS3 E7 - 42

8/10 or 4/5

Loved this one.

This one ranks up there with Empty Child / Doctor Dances and

The Impossible Planet / Satan Pit and the Pompadour one.

IMHO stick to outer space and time travel and less in the present

tense.

Good mystery and suspense. 42 - well see for yourself otherwise

"It's your fault".

Starship reloads on fuel only to find one BIG MISTAKE.

And the Saxon group is in the shadows.

Were the deaths necessary?

All the beautiful captain needed to do was dump the fuel.

Still good story writing. Please watch!

New Yahoo Doctor Who group

Doctor Who and his Blue Box

Doctor Who NS3 E6 - The Lazarus Experiment

7.25/10 or 3.625/5

Why?

Beginning: Suppose this is the farewell for Martha Jones

Until the Doctor gets involved with the 'change

in humanity'.

Body: This is twisted. Richard Lazarus has to please both the

potential invetors and the mysterious Mr. Saxon.

2 plots: Saxon gets Mrs Jones on his side saying the

Doctor is dangerous.

Saxon using supposed Time Lord Technology

suckered Lazarus into doing this.

Sounds like a masterly plot.

Easy to get into but close attention has to be paid with

to Man in Black seducing Mrs Jones.

Still Lazarus is a victim of his greed and blinded by hubris.

Mrs. Lazarus is like a Lady MacBeth and is doomed as such.

Still the Doctor's solution does work and to Saxon's credit

he covers the greater danger.

Conclusion:

Martha is off with the Doctor and Mrs Jones is

worried about Martha based on Norman Saxon's 'information'.

Doctor Who NS3 E5 - Evolution of the Daleks

8/10

Both Daleks in Manhattan and Evolution of the Daleks 8/10.

This brings back a lot of memory.

The Dalek Human factor, seen in Dalek invasion

of Earth, Evil of the Daleks and even Genesis

work well here.

Dalek Sec is one with the human he merged with.

With the Dalek survival on the line , the Doctor

decides to be a distraction and frees the captives.

They all escape. 2 Daleks from the Cult question

Sec's authority. Similar to anyone

questioning Davros in Genesis. (I love flashbacks).

Hooverville and the battle begins. First the pig slaves

then the Daleks. Solomon offers peace only to get

killed and then the Doctor is next.

Sec orders his fellow cult members not to destroy the Doctor.

Note already the Daleks are questioning Sec and this

order from Sec must be causing doubt.

This reminds me of Genesis of the Daleks.

So the Doctor is carried to Sec and MArtha has the psychic

paper. A trio makes for the Empire State Building

and Sec describes the ultimate plan to the Doctor.

So the Daleks want to infuse humans with merged cells,

or will that happen? The 3 Daleks arrest Sec

and the Doctor.

The Doctor and Laslo escapes. The Battle is on.

The Doctor did delay the development of the Daleks in Genesis.

He does so this time with the lightning strike.

The final Battle is to confront Dalek elements in Manhattan.

Again the Doctor dares the Daleks to kill him, only

to see Sec, 2 members of the cult getting killed as well as the

Dalekified humans.

The Doctor confront Dalek Khan and Khan does the

Emergency Temporal Shift.

Laslo is rescued by the Doctor

and Hoverville is back at peace.
