Matthew 19:23-26



23 (Mt 13:22; Mk 10:23) Then Jesus said to His disciples,

"Truly, I say to you that it will be hard for a rich man

to enter the kingdom of heaven.

24 (Mk 10:24-25; Lk 18:25) And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel

to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man

to enter the kingdom of God."

25 When His disciples heard this, they were greatly amazed, saying,

"Who then can be saved?"

26 (Job 42:2; Lk 1:37; Ge 18:14) But Jesus looked at them and said,

"With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."



[23] Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich

I was inspired while reading a historical fiction account of the life of Mary

McLeod Bethune, founder of Bethune-Cookman University. The stories of her

determination and care for others led me to read more about her. One account

tells how in the early 1900s, she "described" the buildings at her school for

young African American women to a wealthy businessman. But when he visited

the "campus," he found only one building. She'd described her dream to him,

hoping that he would invest in the school. Her faith and vision worked

together to secure funding. Her school eventually

became - and still is - a four-year university.



Bethune is credited with saying: "Without faith, nothing is possible. With it,

nothing is impossible." Her quote is similar to what Jesus told the astonished

disciples who were asking questions about salvation. They were trying to

figure out how people could "enter the kingdom of God," or heaven

(Matthew 19:24). They wanted to know "who then can be saved?" (v. 25). Jesus

shared with His followers that faith in God was the only way,

because "with God all things are possible" (v. 26).



Faith is rooted in a belief in God and His abilities. Faith prompts us to

believe in the possibility of things we don't see yet (see Hebrews 11:1) -

like a dream of a school for the underprivileged or an eternal home for

those who accept Christ. May God help us see what He sees.

Joshua 1:8



8 (Ps 19:14; 119:15) This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth.

Meditate on it day and night so that you may act carefully according

to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way successful,

and you will be wise.



8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt

meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according

to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous,

and then thou shalt have good success.



When God spoke these words to Joshua, the young leader's prospects for

"prosperity" and "success" were far from promising. Upon Moses' death,

Joshua was appointed to lead Israel into the Promised Land, to claim

the territory and establish a nation under God's rule.

Joshua was afraid, and for good reason. The people were rebellious

and intractable. And "claiming the land" meant battling many strong enemies.

Yet God told Joshua that his strength would come not in preparing for battle,

but in preparing for battle, but in preparing himself by meditating

on and applying God's word to his life.

We, too, face difficult battles as we seek to enter the "Promised Land"

of God's peace and presence. But his promise is the same as it was to Joshua:

through obedience to the Word, we can find prosperity and success.

God's promise does not necessarily mean financial prosperity

or material success. These victories may come as well, but God's primary

purpose for his people is spiritual success - the victory and joy of living

in fellowship with him. We can be enriched in the knowledge of God and

find power to overcome the enemies of sin and self. The way may not be easy

- after all, there is no victory without conflict - but God promises

that we will succeed as we look to him.



Application

Treasures in Heaven



Lk 12:33-34



19 (Heb 13:5; Lk 12:21) "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth

where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.

20 (Lk 12:33; Mt 19:21) But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,

where neither moth nor rust destroy

and where thieves do not break in nor steal,

21 (Lk 12:34) for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."



19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth

corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust

doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21 for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

11 (Ro 6:8; 1Th 5:10) This is a faithful saying:

If we die with Him, we shall also live with Him.

If we deny Him, He also will deny us.

He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.

9 wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of

10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also

obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him,

we shall also live with him:

12 if we suffer, we shall also reign with him:

if we deny him, he also will deny us:

13 if we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
