Pray to the Lord to stop being proud and anxious.

Pray to the Lord: "Dear Jesus, I've tasted and seen that You and

the Scriptures are good. Please help me love and embrace You more and more."

Pray to the Lord and pray to know you are a sinner

and Jesus is the only one who can cleanse you.

Pray to the Lord and pray to do your work in the name of the Lord.

Pray to the Lord and pray to know the Lord and Light and Salvation.

- for Muslims who are encountering believers and responding

- Pray for, and offer generous hospitality to, those you know who are serving

There is a growing Muslim population in Quebec City and a smattering

of Muslims scattered around the rest of the province, yet the vast majority

of Muslims live in the greater Montreal area. n fact, 23% of Canada's Muslim

population live in Quebec. Why is that? It is largely because Francophone

African Muslims are attracted to La Belle Provence.

And here's an interesting, perhaps even shocking fact: There are more

Muslims in Montreal than there are evangelical Christians.

This is one demographic factor creates a challenging environment for churches

and believers here: The size of the available 'workforce' is small

by comparison to begin with. Believers are already is a host culture that

is often either indifferent to religion or resistant to it. And now

this 'new' religious community of Muslims - many of whom do not visibly

or socially conform to Quebec society - are a growing population. It might br

easy for Christians to feel overwhelm by this cultural double-whammy,

yet God has always worked miracles through the small, the few.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month

and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days

of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,

"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;

your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.

18 Even on My menservants and maidservants

I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.

19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below:

blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,

and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.

Ahab Dies in Battle

2Ch 18:28-34

29 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah

went up to Ramoth Gilead.

30 (2Ch 35:22) The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,

"I will disguise myself and enter into the battle, but you wear your robes."

And the king of Israel disguised himself and went into the battle.

31 (1Ki 20:24; 2Ch 18:30) But the king of Aram ordered his 32 commanders

who had control over his chariots, saying,

"Fight neither against small nor great, but only against the king of Israel."

32 So when the commanders of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said,

"Surely it is the king of Israel." And they turned aside to fight against him,

and Jehoshaphat cried out.

33 When the commanders of the chariots realized that it was not

the king of Israel, they turned away from pursuing him.

34 (2Ch 35:23) A certain man drew a bow at random

and struck the king of Israel between the joints of the armor,

and because of this, he said to the driver of his chariot,

"Turn around and carry me out of the battle, for I am wounded."

35 The battle intensified that day, and the king was propped up in his chariot

against the Arameans and died that evening, and the blood ran

out of the wound into the floor of the chariot.

[29] So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to

Ramoth-gilead.

[30] And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself,

and enter into the battle; but put thou on thy robes. And the king of Israel

disguised himself, and went into the battle.

[31] But the king of Syria commanded his thirty and two captains that had

rule over his chariots, saying, Fight neither with small nor great, save

only with the king of Israel.

[32] And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat,

that they said, Surely it is the king of Israel. And they turned aside to

fight against him: and Jehoshaphat cried out.

[33] And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots perceived that

it was not the king of Israel, that they turned back from pursuing him.

[34] And a certain man drew a bow at a venture, and smote the king of Israel

between the joints of the harness: wherefore he said unto the driver of his

chariot, Turn thine hand, and carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.

[35] And the battle increased that day: and the king was stayed up in his

chariot against the Syrians, and died at even: and the blood ran out of the

wound into the midst of the chariot.

2 Chronicles 18:28-34

The Death of Ahab

1Ki 22:29-36

28 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up

to Ramoth Gilead.

29 (1Sa 28:8) Then the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,

"I will disguise myself and go into battle, but you will put on your clothes."

So the king of Israel disguised himself, and they both entered into battle.

30 And the king of Aram ordered the commanders of his chariots,

"Do not wage war with the small or great but with the king of Israel alone."

31 (2Ch 13:14) And it happened when the commanders of the chariots saw

Jehoshaphat they said, "It is the king of Israel."

So they turned on him to wage war. But Jehoshaphat cried out,

and the Lord helped him, then God drew them away from the king.

32 And it happened when the commanders of the chariots saw that he was

not the king of Israel, then they turned away from him.

33 But a man pulled his bow at random and struck the king of Israel

between his armor scales and body armor. He said to the commander

of the chariot, "Turn and remove me from the battle because I am wounded."

34 And the battle continued on that day, and the king of Israel

was set up in his chariot before the Arameans until evening.

Then he died when the sun set.

[28] So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to

Ramoth-gilead.

[29] And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself,

and will go to the battle; but put thou on thy robes. So the king of Israel

disguised himself; and they went to the battle.

[30] Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of the chariots that

were with him, saying, Fight ye not with small or great, save only with the

king of Israel.

[31] And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat,

that they said, It is the king of Israel. Therefore they compassed about him

to fight: but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; and God moved

them to depart from him.

If you want to bring a smile to Jarrett's face, ask him about his bees. He's

an apiarist - a beekeeper. Though our meetings in his backyard are not about

bees, it's not uncommon for "apiculture" lessons to be a stimulating part of

our conversations. But even better than "bee talk" is the nature-fresh, sweet

taste of the golden-colored honey produced by Jarrett's hardworking bees.

Mm, mm, good!

In Psalm 119:103, the psalmist exclaims, "How sweet are your words to my

taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Closer examination

of verses 97-104 reveals that the "sweeter than honey" comparison is just one

of several phrases the writer uses to accent the supreme value of Scripture:

"Your commands are always with me and make me wiser than my enemies. I have

more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. I have

more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts" (vv. 98-100).

The bottom line is that wholeheartedly embracing what God has revealed

through the words of the Bible situates us to live well in this world.

Similarly, when Jesus, the living Word (see John 1:1-14), is experienced

and valued, His followers, empowered by the Holy Spirit, are well-positioned

to live in ways that honor God and serve His purposes.

A distinguished middle-aged man stood trembling before his church

to give his testimony. Years before, in the grip of a mental illness

that nearly destroyed his life, he had taken the life of his own daughter

and tried to kill himself. But he did not die; tried and convicted, he

spent years in prison, and even longer in the prison of his own guilt.

After the service, a young woman walked up to him and simply said,

"Thank you for sharing. I've sinned, too."

We've all sinned, too - lest we forget or rationalise, the Bible reminds

us in no uncertain terms. And the writer of these verses was no stranger

to sin: he was the Pharisee, the holier-than-thou religious leader

who officiated at the stoning death of Stephen. He was the Jew who had

scattered and killed the followers of this heretic called Christ. He

thought he was righteous while he murdered God's people.

Christians tends to establish a "hierarchy" of sin - sexual sin is "worse"

than pride: murder is "more horrible" than slander. Yet the Bible gives

no indication that god acknowledges our hierarchy. Sin is sin; all have

sinned, and if we are guilty at one point, we are guilty of all.

Rather than rationalise our individual sins as being "less bad"

than someone else's, we need to openly confess our dilemma as sinners

and turn to God for his remedy. We cannot and do not need to earn or

deserve that grace - it is a gift from God.

Application

a) Have I ever compared my sin with someone else's in order

to make myself fell like a better person? Why is such

comparison not a valid remedy for sin?

b) Why do I need to acknowledge my sin honestly before I can

receive justification?

There is a growing Muslim population in Quebec City and a smattering

of Muslims scattered around the rest of the province, yet the vast majority

of Muslims live in the greater Montreal area. n fact, 23% of Canada's Muslim

population live in Quebec. Why is that? It is largely because Francophone

African Muslims are attracted to La Belle Provence.

And here's an interesting, perhaps even shocking fact: There are more

Muslims in Montreal than there are evangelical Christians.

This is one demographic factor creates a challenging environment for churches

and believers here: The size of the available 'workforce' is small

by comparison to begin with. Believers are already is a host culture that

is often either indifferent to religion or resistant to it. And now

this 'new' religious community of Muslims - many of whom do not visibly

or socially conform to Quebec society - are a growing population. It might br

easy for Christians to feel overwhelm by this cultural double-whammy,

yet God has always worked miracles through the small, the few.

Agree in prayer for :

- The people of Quebec, Muslim or otherwise, to be open to the Gospel

- for Muslims who are encountering believers and responding

-for a new group of Muslim background believers who are meeting

together for worship!

- For pastors and believers to be full of passion, faith and vision for

reaching Muslims in Quebec.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month

and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days

of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,

"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;

your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.

18 Even on My menservants and maidservants

I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.

19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below:

blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,

and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.

The Person and Work of Christ

Trees in cold climates prepare for winter through a process called

"hardening." Water drains from cells so they won't freeze, expand, and burst

the tree. The water that remains between the cells is too pure for ice

crystals to attach. Its temperature may now drop to forty degrees below zero

without cracking the tree. Trees harden at the same time each year because

they take their cues from the fixed calendar of shortening days. They don't

stake their lives on the weather, which may be unseasonably mild.

They trust the sun, their one sure thing.

The Son who made the sun is surer yet. He is "the image of the invisible God,

the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created," and "in

him all things hold together" (Colossians 1:15-17). Who tells trees when to

harden each year? The same Son who makes the sun rise each morning and puts it

to bed each night, pulls tides with the moon, whirls electrons in every cell,

pumps your heart and inflates your lungs, and holds you when your heart

is broken.

What holds the world together isn't a force within nature but a person outside

it. A person who entered the world He'd made so he could "reconcile to himself

all things," including you (v. 20). In this unpredictable world, you've got

one sure thing. Jesus will "present you holy in his sight, without blemish

and free from accusation" (v. 22).

Proverbs 4:4,7

Establishing priorities is a popular topic of conversation in our

generation. We carry appointment calendars and attend goal-setting

strategy seminars. We let machines answer our telephones so that

we won't miss any important messages, or so that we can screen calls

before we answer them. We order our lives so that we can "get ahead".

"Getting ahead" in God's kingdom, however, involves other priorities

than the ones we may set for ourselves. "Wisdom is supreme," the

principal thing, says Proverbs 4:7, "Get wisdom. Though it cost

all you have, get understanding."

Wisdom is defined as "an understanding of what is true, right, or lasting."

Biblical wisdom is not merely the accumulation of facts about God and his

teaching, but the application of those truths of life, taking on

the character of God as we mature in the image of Christ.

Such wisdom may, indeed, come at great cost. Jesus calls us to "lay

down our lives" to follow him - perhaps not literally to die, but to die

to self-centered priorities, to allow the Holy Spirit to establish

his value system in us.

"Keep my commandments and you will live," Proverbs 4:4 says. Real life -

rich, fulfilling, significant, abundant life - comes only through union

with God. The success offered by the world, the acclaim of others, material

prosperity and convenience cannot satisfy us once we have tasted

the joy of life with God in Christ.

A Prophet Condemns Ahab

35 (1Ki 13:17-18; 2Ki 2:15) Speaking in the word of the Lord,

a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his neighbor,

"Strike me, please." But the man refused to strike him.

36 Then he said to him, "Because you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord,

as soon as you leave me, a lion will kill you."

And as soon as he left him, a lion found and killed him.

37 Then he found another man and said, "Strike me, please."

And the man struck him so that he was wounded.

38 (1Ki 14:2) So the prophet departed and waited by the road for the king

and disguised himself with ashes on his face.

39 (2Ki 10:24) As the king passed by, he cried to the king and said,

"Your servant went out into the midst of the battle, and a man turned

aside and brought a man to me and said, 'Keep this man,

and if by any means he goes missing, then your life shall be given

for his life, or else you shall pay a talent

[About 75 pounds, or 34 kilograms.] of silver.'

40 As your servant was busy here and there, he disappeared."

And the king of Israel said to him,

"So shall your judgment be; you have decided it yourself."

41 He quickly took the ashes away from his face, and the king of Israel

Naboth's Vineyard

1 (Jdg 6:33; 1Ki 18:45-46) Now Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard

in Jezreel right by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.

2 (1Sa 8:14) And after this Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, "Give me

your vineyard, so that I can have it for a garden of herbs,

because it is near to my house, and I will give you a better vineyard

for it, or if you prefer, I will give you its worth in money."

3 (Lev 25:23; Nu 36:7) Naboth said to Ahab, "The Lord forbid that I should

give you the inheritance of my fathers."

4 (1Ki 20:43) Ahab returned home angry and depressed because of the answer

Naboth the Jezreelite had given him, for he had said, "I will not give you

the inheritance of my fathers." He lay down on his bed and sulked

and would not eat any bread.

5 But Jezebel his wife came to him and said,

"Why is your spirit so sad that you refuse to eat bread?"

6 And he said to her, "Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite

and said to him, 'Give me your vineyard for money; or else, if you prefer,

I will give you another vineyard for it.'

And he answered, 'I will not give you my vineyard.' "

7 Jezebel his wife said to him, "Are you not the governor of the kingdom

of Israel? Get up and eat bread, and let your heart be happy,

for I will get the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite for you."

8 So she wrote letters in Ahab's name and sealed them with his seal

and sent the letters to the elders and to the nobles that were in the city

where Naboth lived.

9 In the letters she wrote,

"Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people,

10 (Ex 22:28; Ac 6:11) and set two men, sons of Belial,Or, evil men.

before him, to bear witness against him, saying, 'You blasphemed God

and the king.' And then carry him out and stone him, so that he will die."

11 The men of his city, the elders and the nobles who lived in his city,

did as Jezebel had sent word to them, as it was written in the letters

that she had sent to them.

12 (Isa 58:4) They proclaimed a fast and set Naboth on high among the people.

13 (2Ki 9:26) Two men, children of Belial, came in and sat in front of him,

and the men of Belial witnessed against Naboth in the presence of the people,

saying, "Naboth blasphemed God and the king."

Then they carried him out of the city and stoned him to death.

14 Then they sent word to Jezebel,

saying, "Naboth has been stoned and is dead."

15 When Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead,

she said to Ahab, "Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth

the Jezreelite, which he refused to sell to you for money,

for Naboth is not alive, but dead."

16 When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up to go down to the vineyard

of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.

vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.

The Lord Condemns Ahab

17 (Ps 9:12) The word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying:

18 Arise, go down to meet Ahab, king of Israel, who is in Samaria.

He is now in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone down to possess it.

19 (1Ki 22:38; 2Sa 12:9) You shall speak to him, saying, "Thus says the Lord:

Have you killed and also taken possession?" And you shall speak to him,

saying, "Thus says the Lord: In the place where dogs licked

the blood of Naboth, dogs will lick your own blood!"

20 (1Ki 18:17; 21:25) Ahab said to Elijah, "Have you found me, my enemy?"

And he answered, "I have found you, because you have sold yourself

to work evil in the sight of the Lord.

21 (1Ki 14:10) 'See, I will bring disaster upon you and will take away

your posterity and will cut off all your males, both free and slave,

who are left in Israel,

22 (1Ki 16:3; 14:16) and will make your house like the house of Jeroboam

the son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah,

for the provocation with which you have provoked Me to anger

and made Israel to sin.'

'The dogs will eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.'

will be eaten by dogs, and those who die in the field will be eaten

25 (1Ki 21:20; 16:30-33) But there were none compared to Ahab,

who sold himself to evil deeds in the sight of the Lord,

which Jezebel his wife stirred up.

26 (Ge 15:16; 2Ki 21:11) He performed the most abominable act in following

idols like the Amorites, whom the Lord cast out before the children of Israel.

28 The word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,

Because he humbles himself before Me,

I will not bring the disaster during his lifetime,

but during his son's lifetime I will bring the disaster on his household."

[17] And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,

1 Kings 20

Ben-Hadad Attacks Samaria

1 (1Ki 15:18; 15:20) Now Ben-Hadad the king of Aram gathered his army

together. 32 kings were with him, with horses and chariots, and he went up

and besieged Samaria and fought against it.

2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel and said to him,

"Thus says Ben-Hadad:

3 Your silver and gold is mine, as are your

most attractive wives and children."

4 The king of Israel answered, "My lord, O king, just as you have said,

I and all that I own are yours."

5 The messengers came again and said, "Thus says Ben-Hadad:

Although I have said that you must give me your silver and gold,

your wives and your children,

6 instead I will send my servants tomorrow about this time,

and they will search your house and the houses of your servants,

and whatever is precious to you, they will put it in their hands

and take it away."

7 (2Ki 5:7) Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land

and said, "Please notice how this man is looking for trouble,

for he has demanded I give him my wives and children

and my silver and gold, and I have not denied his request."

8 All the elders and all the people said to him,

"Do not listen to him or consent to his demands."

9 Therefore he said to the messengers of Ben-Hadad,

"Tell my lord the king: I will comply with the first request of your servant,

but this thing I will not do." And the messengers departed

and brought him word again.

10 (1Ki 19:2; Ex 11:8) Then Ben-Hadad sent messengers to him and said,

"The gods do to me and then some if the dust of Samaria shall suffice

for handfuls for all the people who follow me."

11 (Pr 27:1) The king of Israel answered, "Tell him: Let not he who puts

on his armor boast himself as he who takes it off."

12 (1Ki 16:9; 20:16) When Ben-Hadad heard this message as he was drinking

with the kings in the pavilions, he said to his servants, "Station yourselves!"

And they stationed themselves against the city.

Syria Attacks Israel

1 And Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there

were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and he went up

and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.

2 And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said unto

him, Thus saith Ben-hadad,

3 Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children,

even the goodliest, are mine.

4 And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy

saying, I am thine, and all that I have.

5 And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Ben-hadad, saying,

Although I have sent unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver,

and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;

6 yet I will send my servants unto thee to morrow about this time, and they

shall search thine house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be,

that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand,

and take it away.

7 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark,

I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for

my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold;

and I denied him not.

8 And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken not unto him,

nor consent.

9 Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lord the king,

All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this

thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.

10 And Ben-hadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more

also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people

that follow me.

11 And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that

girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.

12 And it came to pass, when Ben-hadad heard this message, as he was drinking,

he and the kings in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set

yourselves in array. And they set themselves in array against the city.

Ahab Defeats Ben-Hadad

13 (1Ki 20:28) Then a prophet came to Ahab king of Israel, saying,

"Thus says the Lord: Have you seen this great multitude?

See, I will deliver it into your hand this day,

and you shall know that I am the Lord."

14 Ahab asked, "By whom?" And he said, "Thus says the Lord:

By the young leaders of the provinces." Then he said,

"Who shall order the battle?" And he answered, "You."

15 Then he counted the young leaders of the provinces,

and they were 232, and after them he counted all the people,

all the children of Israel, and had 7000.

16 They went out at noon. But Ben-Hadad and the 32 kings

who helped him were getting drunk in the pavilions.

17 The young leaders of the provinces went out first.

Ben-Hadad sent out scouts, and they told him,

"Men from Samaria have come out."

18 (2Ki 14:8-12) He said, "If they have come out peacefully, take them alive,

and if they have come out for battle, take them alive."

19 So these young leaders of the provinces came out of the city,

followed by the army.

20 Each one killed his man, and the Arameans fled with Israel pursuing them,

but Ben-Hadad, the king of Aram, escaped on a horse with the horsemen.

21 The king of Israel went out and attacked the horses and chariots

and killed a great number of Arameans.

22 (2Sa 11:1; 1Ki 20:13) The prophet came to the king of Israel and said,

"Go, strengthen yourself and prepare, and see what you do,

for next year the king of Aram will come up against you."

13 And, behold, there came a prophet unto Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus

saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will

deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.

14 And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Even by the young

men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle?

And he answered, Thou.

15 Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they

were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people,

even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.

16 And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in

the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.

17 And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and

Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out

of Samaria.

18 And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or

whether they be come out for war, take them alive.

19 So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city,

and the army which followed them.

20 And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued

them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the horsemen.

21 And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots,

and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.

22 And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go,

strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest:

for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.

23 (1Ki 14:23) The servants of the king of Aram said to him,

"Their gods are gods of the hills. That is why they were stronger than us,

but if we fight against them in the plain,

we will surely be stronger than they.

24 Do this: Dismiss the kings, each from his position,

and put commanders in their places,

25 and assemble an army like the army that you lost,

horse for horse and chariot for chariot, and we will fight them in the plain

and will surely be stronger than they." And he listened to their advice

and followed it.

26 (2Ki 13:17; 1Ki 20:22) The next year Ben-Hadad assembled the Arameans

and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.

27 (Jdg 6:5; 1Sa 13:5-8) The children of Israel were assembled and were all

present, and they went against them, and the children of Israel camped

in front of them like two little flocks of kids, while the Arameans filled

the country.

28 (1Ki 20:13; 17:18) A man of God came and spoke to the king of Israel

and said, "Thus says the Lord: Because the Arameans have said,

'The Lord is God of the hills, but He is not God of the valleys,'

I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand,

and you will know that I am the Lord."

29 They camped opposite each other for seven days, and on the seventh day,

the battle was joined. The children of Israel killed a hundred thousand

Aramean footmen in one day.

30 (1Ki 22:25; 2Ch 18:24) But the rest fled into the city of Aphek,

where a wall fell on 27000 of the men who were left.

And Ben-Hadad fled and came into the city into an inner chamber.

31 (Ge 37:34; 2Sa 3:31) His servants said to him, "We have heard that

the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings.

Please let us put sackcloth on our loins and ropes on our heads

and go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life."

32 (1Ki 20:3-6) So they girded sackcloth on their loins and put ropes

on their heads and came to the king of Israel and said,

"Your servant Ben-Hadad says, 'Please let me live.' "

And he said, "Is he still alive? He is my brother!"

33 Now the men were diligently looking for a positive sign

and quickly took hold of it, and they said, "Your brother Ben-Hadad!"

Then he said, "Go. You bring him." Then Ben-Hadad came to him

and got into the chariot.

34 (1Ki 15:20) Ben-Hadad said to him, "I will restore the cities

which my father took from your father, and you shall make streets

for yourself in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria."

Then Ahab said, "I will send you away with this covenant."

So he made a covenant with him and sent him away.

[23] And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are

gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight

against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.

[24] And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place,

and put captains in their rooms:

[25] And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for

horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain,

and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their

voice, and did so.

[26] And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben-hadad numbered

the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.

[27] And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and

went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two

little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.

[28] And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and

said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of

the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all

[29] And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was,

to come up into the chariot.

[34] And Ben-hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy

father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as

my father made in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will send thee away with this

covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.

There is a growing Muslim population in Quebec City and a smattering

of Muslims scattered around the rest of the province, yet the vast majority

of Muslims live in the greater Montreal area. n fact, 23% of Canada's Muslim

population live in Quebec. Why is that? It is largely because Francophone

African Muslims are attracted to La Belle Provence.

And here's an interesting, perhaps even shocking fact: There are more

Muslims in Montreal than there are evangelical Christians.

This is one demographic factor creates a challenging environment for churches

and believers here: The size of the available 'workforce' is small

by comparison to begin with. Believers are already is a host culture that

is often either indifferent to religion or resistant to it. And now

this 'new' religious community of Muslims - many of whom do not visibly

or socially conform to Quebec society - are a growing population. It might br

easy for Christians to feel overwhelm by this cultural double-whammy,

yet God has always worked miracles through the small, the few.

Agree in prayer for :

- The people of Quebec, Muslim or otherwise, to be open to the Gospel

- for Muslims who are encountering believers and responding

-for a new group of Muslim background believers who are meeting

together for worship!

- For pastors and believers to be full of passion, faith and vision for

reaching Muslims in Quebec.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month

and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days

of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,

"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;

your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.

18 Even on My menservants and maidservants

I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.

19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below:

blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,

and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.

21 And whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."[a]

John 10:28 - I give them eternal life. They shall never perish,

nor shall anyone snatch them from My hand.

28 and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish,

neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

In C.S. Lewis's The Great Divorce, one of the Spirits in heaven, identifying

himself as George MacDonald, makes some startling statements on the nature of

eternal life. Depending upon the individual's choice for or against Christ,

MacDonald says, everything in life takes on the character of haven or hell.

"At the end of ALL THINGS, when the sun rises here (in heaven) and the twilight

turns to blackness down there, the Blessed will say, 'We have never lived

anywhere except in Heaven,' and the Lost, 'We were always in Hell.'

And both will speak truly" - From the Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis.

Lewis was not trying to make a theological case, but to demonstrate

a principle: eternal life begins now.

The choices that we make for or against obedience to God, the life we live,

the patterns we establish, all move us in one direction of the other.

And when we have decided to choose obedience to God (the forsakeness of sin),

when we give ourselves fully into his hands, he is able to take the worst of

circumstances and redeem them for our good, use them to mature us in his image.

Again Jesus says in John 10:28

"I give them eternal life. They shall never perish,

nor shall anyone snatch them from My hand. "

In Christ is a very secure place to be. No experience is lost, no pain is

wasted. Everything in our lives is redeemed by God for our benefit.

Eric, age 4, somehow lost his mother in a large and busy department store.

Found sobbing under a coat rack, the boy tried to tell the security guard

where he was when he got separated from his mother. Finally the guard said,

"what's your name, Son? Who do you belong to?"

The child brightened a bit, gave the guard his name, and within minutes

the frantic mother was reunited with her lost son.

One of the first questions we are asked, both as children and adults, is

"What is your name?" - that is, "Who are you? Who do you belong to?"

Children bear the name of their parents, and most women,

except for professional reasons,

take the name of their husbands when they marry.

Our names are our primary method of identification;

they connect us with our heritage and those we love.

In Isaiah 43:1, God declares that we belong to him.

The Lord who created us and formed us says,

"I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine." God's

right of ownership in our lives extends beyond the bond of family and friends,

of parent, child, or spouse. We belong first to him;

we are called by him into oneness with him.

The Scripture is filled with images of the Lord's care for us;

when we are lost, he does

not wait for us to find him,

but takes the initiative, like a loving parent

to seek us out. That declaration of belonging can give us

a strong sense of security in our lives. God loves us;

he will never let us go.

Elijah and the Prophets of Baal

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.

17 (Jos 7:25; 1Ki 21:20) When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him,

"Are you he that troubles Israel?"

18 (2Ch 15:2; 1Ki 9:9) And he answered, "I have not troubled Israel, but you

and your father's house, in that you have forsaken the commandments

of the Lord and you have followed the Baals.

19 (Jos 19:26; 1Ki 16:33) Now send word out and gather for me all Israel

on Mount Carmel, along with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal

and the four hundred prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel's table."

20 So Ahab called out all the children of Israel a

nd gathered the prophets together on Mount Carmel.

21 (Jos 24:15; 2Ki 17:41) Elijah came to all the people and said,

"How long will you stay between two opinions?

If the Lord is God, follow Him, but if Baal, then follow him."

And the people did not say a word.

22 (1Ki 19:10; 19:14) Then Elijah said to the people, "I alone remain

a prophet of the Lord, but Baal's prophets number 450 men.

23 Therefore, let them give us two bulls, and let them choose one bull

for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on some wood, but do not

light a fire under it, and I will prepare the other bull, lay it on some wood,

and not light a fire underneath it.

24 (1Ki 18:38; 1Ch 21:26) And you call on the name of your gods,

and I will call on the name of the Lord, and the God that answers by fire,

let Him be God." And all the people answered and said, "It is well spoken."

25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose one bull for yourselves

and prepare it first, for there are many of you, and call on

the name of your god, but do not light a fire underneath."

26 (Jer 10:5; 1Co 8:4) They took the bull which was given to them,

and they prepared it and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon,

saying, "O Baal, hear us." But there was no voice, and no one answered.

And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

27 By noon, Elijah mocked them, saying, "Cry out loud, for he is a god.

Either he is talking or is gone away or is on a journey,

or perhaps he is asleep and needs to be awakened."

28 (Lev 19:28; Dt 14:1) They cried out loud and cut themselves with knives

and spears according to their custom until the blood gushed out on them.

29 (Ex 29:41; 1Ki 18:26) And as midday passed, they prophesied

until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice.

But there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention.

30 (1Ki 19:10; 19:14) Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me."

And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord

that was broken down.

31 (Ge 32:28; 35:10) Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number

of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came saying,

"Israel shall be your name,"

32 (Col 3:17) and he built an altar in the name of the Lord with stones,

and he made a trench around the altar, so deep that it could contain two seahs

[Likely about 24 pounds, or 11 kilograms.] of seed.

33 (Ge 22:9; Lev 1:6-8) He arranged the wood and cut the bull in pieces

and laid him on the wood and said, "Fill four barrels with water,

and pour it on the burnt sacrifice and on the wood."

34 He said, "Do it a second time," and they did it a second time.

And he said, "Do it a third time," and they did it the third time.

35 The water ran all around the altar and also filled the trench with water.

36 (Ex 3:6; 1Ki 8:43) At the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice,

Elijah the prophet came near and said, "The Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac,

and of Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel

and that I am Your servant and that I have done all these things at Your word.

37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me, so that this people may know that

You are the Lord God and that You have turned their hearts back again."

38 (Lev 9:24; Jdg 6:21) Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt

sacrifice and the wood and the stones and the dust and licked up the water

that was in the trench.

39 (1Ki 18:24; 18:21) When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces

and said, "The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!"

40 (Dt 13:5; 18:20) Elijah said to them, "Arrest the prophets of Baal,

and do not let one of them escape." And they arrested them,

and Elijah brought them down to the Kishon brook and executed them there.

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art

thou he that troubleth Israel?

18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's

house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast

followed Baalim.

19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel,

and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty,

and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.

Mount Carmel

20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets

together unto mount Carmel.

21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between

two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him.

And the people answered him not a word.

22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet

of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock

for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire

under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no

fire under:

24 and call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of

the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all

the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for

yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of

your gods, but put no fire under.

26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it,

and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal,

hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon

the altar which was made.

27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud:

for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in

a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives

and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the

time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice,

nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people

came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was

broken down.

the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall

be thy name:

32 and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made

37 Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD

God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice,

and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was

in the trench.

39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said,

The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

40 And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them

escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon,

and slew them there.

End of the Drought

41 Elijah said to Ahab, "Get up, eat and drink, for there is a sound

of a heavy rainfall."

42 So Ahab got up to eat and drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel,

and he threw himself down on the ground and put his face between his knees.

43 And he said to his servant, "Go up now, and look toward the sea."

And he went up and looked and said, "There is nothing."

And he said, "Go again," seven times.

44 (Lk 12:54) On the seventh time, he said, "A small cloud as small

as a man's hand is rising out of the sea."

And he said, "Go up and say to Ahab, 'Mount your chariot and get down,

so that the rain does not stop you.' "

45 In the meantime, the sky turned black with clouds and wind,

and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel.

46 (2Ki 3:15; 4:29) The hand of the Lord was on Elijah, and he girded up

his loins and ran ahead of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

41 And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a

sound of abundance of rain.

42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top

of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face

between his knees,

43 and said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up,

and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there

ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up,

say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop

thee not.

45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with

clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode,

and went to Jezreel.

46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins,

and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

1 Kings 19

Elijah Flees From Jezebel

1 (1Ki 18:40) And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done

and how he had executed all the prophets with the sword.

2 (Ru 1:17; 1Ki 20:10) Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying,

"So let the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life

as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time."

3 (Ge 21:31) When he saw that she was serious, he arose and ran for his life

to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

4 (Nu 11:15; Jnh 4:8) But he went a day's journey into the wilderness

and came and sat down under a juniper tree and asked that he might die,

saying, "It is enough! Now, O Lord, take my life,

for I am not better than my fathers."

5 As he lay and slept under the juniper tree, an angel touched him

and said to him, "Arise and eat."

6 (Mt 4:11) He looked, and there was a cake baked on coals and a jar of water

at his head. And he ate and drank and then lay down again.

7 The angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said,

"Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you."

8 (Ex 34:28; 3:1; 24:18) He arose and ate and drank and went in the strength

of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God.

On Mount Horeb

1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had

slain all the prophets with the sword.

2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me,

and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow

about this time.

3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to

Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat

down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die;

and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better

than my fathers.

5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel

touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.

6 And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals,

and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink,

and laid him down again.

7 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him,

and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.

8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that

meat forty days and forty nights unto Hor

Elijah Hears the Lord

9 (Ex 33:21-22; 1Ki 19:13) He came to a cave and camped there,

and the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him,

"Why are you here, Elijah?"

10 (1Ki 18:4; 18:22; Nu 25:13) And he said, "I have been very zealous

for the Lord, Lord of Hosts, for the children of Israel have forsaken

Your covenant, thrown down Your altars, and killed Your prophets

with the sword, and I alone am left, and they seek to take my life."

11 (Ex 24:12; Eze 1:4) He said, "Go and stand on the mountain

before the Lord."

And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind split

the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord,

but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind, an earthquake came,

but the Lord was not in the earthquake.

12 (Job 4:16; Zec 4:6) And after the earthquake, a fire came, but the Lord

was not in the fire, and after the fire, a still, small voice.

13 (1Ki 19:9) When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak

and went out and stood in the entrance to the cave.

And a voice came to him and said, "Why are you here, Elijah?"

14 And he said, "I have been very zealous for the Lord, Lord of Hosts,

because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, thrown down

Your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I alone am left,

and they seek to take my life."

15 (2Ki 8:7-15) The Lord said to him, "Go, return on the road through

the Wilderness of Damascus, and when you arrive, anoint Hazael

to be king over Aram.

16 (1Ki 19:19-21; 2Ki 2:9) And you shall anoint Jehu, the son of Nimshi,

to be king over Israel, and you shall anoint Elisha, the son of Shaphat

of Abel Meholah, to be prophet in your place.

17 (2Ki 8:12; 13:3) He who escapes the sword of Hazael will be killed

by Jehu, and he who escapes the sword of Jehu will be killed by Elisha.

18 (Hos 13:2) Still, I have preserved seven thousand men in Israel for Myself,

all of whose knees have not bowed to Baal

and whose mouths have not kissed him."

The Call of Elisha

19 (2Ki 2:8; 1Sa 28:14) So he departed from there and found Elisha

the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen

before him and he with the twelfth, and Elijah passed by him

and threw his cloak on him.

20 (Mt 8:21-22; Lk 9:61-62) He left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said,

"Please let me kiss my father and mother, and then I will follow you."

And he said to him, "Go back, for what have I done to you?"

21 (2Sa 24:22) So he returned from following him and took a yoke of oxen

and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes from the oxen

and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he got up and went after Elijah

and ministered to him.

19 So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was

The Good Samaritan

29 (Lk 16:15) But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus,

"And who is my neighbour?"

30 Jesus answered, "A man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho

and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing

and wounded him and departed, leaving him half dead.

31 By chance a priest came down that way. And when he saw him,

he passed by on the other side.

32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to that place, looked at him

and passed by on the other side.

33 (Mt 10:5) But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was.

And when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

34 and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine.

Then he set him on his own donkey and brought him to an inn,

and took care of him.

35 The next day when he departed, he took out two denarii

(Gk. denarius, a coin worth about a day's wage.)

and gave them to the innkeeper and said to him, 'Take care of him.

I will repay you whatever else you spend when I return.'

36 " ow which of these three do you think was a neighbor to him

who fell among the thieves?"

37 (2Co 8:9; 1Pe 2:21) He said, "The one who showed mercy on him."

Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

[36] Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that

fell among the thieves?

[37] And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go,

and do thou likewise.

An elderly woman became unconscious on a hot sidewalk after a terrible fall.

Several people stopped to help. One called 911. Another gently placed a coat

under her head. Others put towels under her arms, and still another held an

umbrella over her head until paramedics arrived. The person who posted the

video wrote that it was an especially heartwarming scene because those who

stopped included people of different ages and ethnicities - all working

together to help someone in distress.

When an expert in God's law asked Jesus who his neighbour was (Luke 10:29) -

that is, who he was obligated to show love to - Jesus told a story of a man

badly beaten by robbers, lying near death by the side of the

road (vv. 30-31). A priest and then a Levite approached, but both passed by on

the other side. Finally, a Samaritan stopped to help. What made this so

unusual was that Jews and Samaritans had a bitter history of scorn for each

other. Yet it was the Samaritan who stopped

and "took pity" on the man (v. 33).

After telling this parable, Jesus asked which was a neighbor to the fallen

man. The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him" (v. 37).

Jesus told him, and us, "Go and do likewise."

May God help us see that everyone we meet is our neighbour,

another human created by Him and deserving of our aid.
