Isaiah 8
The Coming Assyrian Invasion
1 (Isa 30:8) Moreover the Lord said to me, Take for yourself a large book
and write in it with a man's pen: "Swift is the booty, speedy is the prey."
[See v. 3. 22Ki 16:10-11]
2 I will take to Myself faithful witnesses
for testimony, Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberekiah.
3 So I went in to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son.
Then the Lord said to me, Call his name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.
[See v. 1. ]
4 For before the child knows how to cry "My father" and "My mother,"
the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away
before the king of Assyria.
5 The Lord spoke to me again, saying:
6 (Jn 9:7; Ne 3:15) Because this people refuses
the gently flowing waters of Shiloah
and rejoices in Rezin
and the son of Remaliah,
7 (Isa 17:12-13; 7:17) now therefore the Lord certainly
is about to bring upon them
the strong and plentiful waters of the River, [Euphrates River].
even the king of Assyria and all his glory;
and he shall come up over all his channels
and go over all his banks.
8 (Isa 7:14; 30:28) And he shall pass through Judah,
he shall overflow and go over,
he shall reach even to the neck,
and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of your land,
O Immanuel.
9 Be broken, O you peoples, and be broken in pieces.
And give ear, all you from far countries.
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces;
gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces.
10 (Ro 8:31; Job 5:12) Take counsel together, but it shall come to nothing;
speak the word, but it shall not stand for God is with us.
[1] Moreover the LORD said unto me, Take thee a great roll, and write in it
with a man's pen concerning Maher-shalal-hash-baz.
[2] And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and
Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.

[4] For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my
mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away
before the king of Assyria.
[5] The LORD spake also unto me again, saying,
[6] Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly,
and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah's son;
[7] Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the
river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he
shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks:
[8] And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall
reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the
breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.
[9] Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and
give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken
in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.
[10] Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and
it shall not stand: for God is with us.
Fear God
11 (Eze 3:14) For the Lord spoke thus to me with a strong hand
and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:
12 (1Pe 3:14-15) You should not say, "It is a conspiracy,"
concerning all that this people calls a conspiracy,
neither fear their threats
nor be afraid of them.
13 Sanctify the Lord of Hosts Himself,
and let Him be your fear,
and let Him be your dread.
14 (Eze 11:16; Lk 2:34) He shall become a sanctuary,
but a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense
to both the houses of Israel,
and a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 (Isa 28:13; Mt 21:44) Many among them shall stumble
and fall and be broken
and be snared and be taken.
16 (Da 12:4 ) Bind up the testimony;
seal the law among My disciples.
17 (Isa 54:8; Hab 2:3) I will wait on the Lord,
who hides His face from the house of Jacob,
and I will eagerly look for Him.
18 (Ps 9:11; Lk 2:34) See, I and the children whom the Lord has given me
are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the Lord of Hosts who dwells
in Mount Zion.
19 (Isa 19:3; Lev 20:6) When they say to you, "Seek after the mediums
and the wizards, who whisper and mutter," should not a people seek
after their God? Should they consult the dead for the living?
20 (Mic 3:6; 2Pe 1:19) To the law and to the testimony;
if they do not speak according to this word,
it is because there is no light in them.
21 (Isa 9:20) They shall pass through the land hard-pressed and hungry;
when they are hungry, they shall be furious and curse their king
and their God as they look upward.
22 (Isa 5:30; Jer 13:16) Then they shall look to the earth and see trouble
and darkness, gloom of anguish. And they shall be driven away into darkness.
[11] For the LORD spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me

confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.

rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to
the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

[16] Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.
[17] And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of
Jacob, and I will look for him.
[18] Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs

spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people

[20] To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this
word, it is because there is no light in them.
[21] And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall
come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves,
and curse their king and their God, and look upward.
[22] And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness,
dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.
Isaiah 9
The Coming King
1 (2Ki 15:29; 2Ch 16:4) Nevertheless there shall be no more gloom
for her who was in anguish. In the former time He contemptuously
treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
but in the latter time He shall make it glorious,
by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.
2 (Eph 5:8; Mt 4:16) The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwell in the land of the shadow of death,
upon them the light has shined.
3 (1Sa 30:16; Isa 26:15) You have multiplied the nation
and increased the joy;
they rejoice before You
according to the joy of harvest
and as men rejoice
when they divide the spoil.
4 (Isa 14:25; 10:26-27) For You have broken the yoke of his burden
and the bar of his shoulder,
the rod of his oppressor
as in the day of Midian's defeat.
5For all the sandals of the tramping warriors
and all the garments rolled in blood
shall be burned as fuel for the fire.
6 (Isa 7:14; Mt 28:18; Lk 2:11) For unto us a child is born,
unto us a son is given,
and the government shall be upon his shoulder.
And his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
7 (Isa 37:32; Da 2:44) Of the increase of his government and peace
there shall be no end,
upon the throne of David
and over his kingdom,
to order it and to establish it
with justice and with righteousness,
from now until forever.
The zeal of the Lord of Hosts
will perform this.
[1] Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when
at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of
Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the
sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.
[2] The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that
dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
[3] Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy
before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they
divide the spoil.
[4] For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his
shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.
[5] For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments
rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.
[6] For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government
shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful,
Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
[7] Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon
the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it
with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of
the LORD of hosts will perform this.
The Message Against Israel
8 The Lord sent a word against Jacob,
and it falls upon Israel.
9 (Isa 46:12) All the people shall know,
even Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
who say in the pride
and stoutness of heart,
10 (Mal 1:4) "The bricks are fallen down,
but we will build with hewn stones;
the sycamores are cut down,
but we will replace them with cedars."
11 Therefore, the Lord shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him,
and join his enemies together.
12 (2Ch 28:18; Isa 5:25) The Arameans shall be before
and the Philistines behind;
and they shall devour Israel with open jaws.
For all this His anger is not turned away,
and His hand is stretched out still.
13 (Hos 7:10; Isa 31:1) For the people do not turn to Him who struck them,
nor do they seek the Lord of Hosts.
14 (Isa 19:15; Rev 18:8) Therefore the Lord will cut off from Israel head
and tail, branch and bulrush, in one day.
15 (Isa 3:2-3; Mt 24:24) The elder and honorable man, he is the head;
and the prophet that teaches lies, he is the tail.
16 (Isa 3:12; Mt 15:14) For the leaders of this people cause them to err,
and those who are led by them are destroyed.
17 (Isa 10:6; 5:25) Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men,
nor shall He have mercy on their fatherless and widows;
for every one of them is a hypocrite and an evildoer,
and every mouth speaks folly.
For all this His anger is not turned away,
and His hand is stretched out still.
18 (Mal 4:1; Ps 83:14) For wickedness burns as a fire;
it shall devour the briers and thorns,
and shall ignite in the thickets of the forest,
and they shall mount up like rising smoke.
19 (Mic 7:2; 7:6) Through the wrath of the Lord of Hosts
is the land burned up,
and the people shall be as fuel for the fire;
no man shall spare his brother.
20 (Isa 49:26) They shall snatch on the right hand,
but still be hungry;
and they shall eat on the left hand,
and shall not be satisfied;
every man shall eat the flesh of his own arm.
21 (Isa 5:25; 2Ch 28:6-8) Manasseh consumes Ephraim, and Ephraim, Manasseh,
and they together shall be against Judah.
For all this His anger is not turned away,
and His hand is stretched out still.
[8] The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.
[9] And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of

against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is
stretched out still.
Isaiah 10
1 (Ps 58:2) Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees
and who write unjust judgments which they have prescribed
2 (Isa 3:14; 1:23) to turn aside the needy from justice
and to take away the right from the poor of My people,
that widows may be their prey,
and that they may rob the fatherless!
3 (Hos 9:7; Lk 19:44) And what will you do in the day of punishment
and in the desolation which shall come from afar?
To whom will you flee for help,
and where will you leave your wealth?
4 (Isa 5:25; 9:12) Nothing remains but to bow down among the prisoners,
and they shall fall among the slain.
For all this His anger is not turned away,
and His hand is stretched out still.
[1] Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write
grievousness which they have prescribed;
[2] To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from
the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob
the fatherless!
[3] And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation
which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye
leave your glory?
[4] Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall
under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is
stretched out still.
Judgment on Assyria
5 Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger
and the staff in whose hand is My indignation.
6 (Isa 9:17) I will send him against an ungodly nation,
and against the people of My wrath I will give him a command,
to seize the plunder, to take the prey,
and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
7 (Ge 50:20; Mic 4:11-12) However he does not so intend,
nor does he plan so in his heart;
but his purpose is to destroy
and to cut off many nations.
8 (2Ki 18:24) For he says, "Are not my princes altogether kings?
9 (2Ki 16:9; 2Ch 35:20) Is not Kalno as Carchemish?
Is not Hamath as Arpad?
Is not Samaria as Damascus?
10 As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols
whose graven images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11 shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols,
so do to Jerusalem and her idols?"
12 (2Ki 19:31; Jer 50:18) When the Lord has performed all His work
on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say,
"I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria
and the glory of his high looks."
13 (Da 4:30) For he says:
"By the strength of my hand and by my wisdom,
I have done it, for I am prudent;
and I have removed the bounds of the people,
and have robbed their treasures,
and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man.
14 (Job 31:25) And my hand has found as a nest
the riches of the people,
and as one gathers eggs that are left,
I have gathered all the earth
and there was no one who moved the wing
or opened the mouth or peeped."
15 (Isa 10:5; Ro 9:20-21; Isa 45:9) Shall the axe boast itself against
him who hews with it?
Or shall the saw magnify itself against him who wields it?
That is as if the rod wields itself against those who lift it up,
or as if the staff should lift itself up as if it were not wood.
16 (Ps 106:15) Therefore the Lord, God of Hosts,
shall send leanness among his stout ones,
and under his glory he shall kindle a burning
like the burning of a fire.
17 (Nu 11:1-3; Isa 27:4) The light of Israel shall be a fire,
and his Holy One a flame,
and it shall burn and devour
his thorns and his briers in one day,
18 (2Ki 19:23; Isa 10:33-34) and shall consume the glory of his forest,
and of his fruitful field, both soul and body;
and it shall be as when a sick man faints.
19 The rest of the trees of his forest shall be so few
that a child may write them down.
[5] O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine
indignation.
[6] I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people
of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the
prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
[7] Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in
his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.
[8] For he saith, Are not my princes altogether kings?
[9] Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as
Damascus?
[10] As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven
images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;
[11] Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to
Jerusalem and her idols?
[12] Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his
whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the
stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.
[13] For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my
wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and
have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a
valiant man:
[14] And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one

none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

[16] Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones
leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of
a fire.
[17] And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a
flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;
[18] And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field,
both soul and body: and they shall be as when a standardbearer fainteth.
[19] And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may
write them.
The Returning Remnant of Israel
20 (2Ki 16:7; 2Ch 28:20 ) In that day the remnant of Israel
and those who have escaped of the house of Jacob
shall never again depend on him who struck them,
but shall depend on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
21 (Isa 9:6; 7:3) The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob,
to the mighty God.
22 (Ro 9:27-28; Da 9:27 )For though your people, O Israel,
are as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return;
the destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness.
23 For the Lord God of Hosts shall make a complete destruction,
as decreed, in the midst of all the land.
24 (Isa 37:6) Therefore, thus says the Lord God of Hosts:
O My people who dwell in Zion,
do not be afraid of the Assyrian.
He shall strike you with a rod
and shall lift up his staff against you, after the manner of Egypt.
25 (Da 11:36) For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall cease,
and My anger will be directed to their destruction.
26 (Isa 9:4; Jdg 7:25; 2Ki 19:35) The Lord of Hosts shall stir up
a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb;
and as His rod was over the sea, so shall He lift it up
after the manner of Egypt.
27 (Isa 9:4; 14:25) In that day his burden shall be taken away
from off your shoulder, and his yoke from off your neck;
and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing oil.
28 (1Sa 14:2; 13:2) He has come against Aiath,
he has passed through Migron; at Mikmash he has laid up his carriages.
29 (1Sa 7:17; 13:23) They are gone over the pass, they have taken up their
lodging at Geba. Ramah is afraid, Gibeah of Saul has fled.
30 (1Sa 25:44; Jer 1:1) Lift up your voice, O daughter of Gallim.
Listen, Laishah and poor Anathoth.
31 Madmenah has fled, the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to flee.
32 (1Sa 21:1; 22:19) Yet today he shall remain at Nob;
he shakes his fist against the mount of the daughter of Zion,
the hill of Jerusalem.
33 (Am 2:9; Isa 37:38) See, the Lord, the Lord of Hosts,
shall lop the bough with terror;
and the tall ones of stature shall be hewn down,
and the haughty shall be humbled.
34 (Isa 37:24) He shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron,
and Lebanon shall fall by the Mighty One.
[20] And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and
such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him
that smote them; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in
truth.
[21] The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.
[22] For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant
of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with
righteousness.
[23] For the Lord GOD of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in
the midst of all the land.
[24] Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwellest
in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall smite thee with a rod, and
shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.
[25] For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall cease, and mine

Isaiah 11
The Righteous Branch of Jesse
1 (Isa 11:10; 4:2; 53:2) And there shall come forth a shoot
from the stump of Jesse,
and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
2 (Isa 61:1; Mt 3:16; Isa 42:1) The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.
3 (Jn 7:24) He shall delight in the fear of the Lord,
and he shall not judge by what his eyes see,
nor reprove by what his ears hear;
4 (Mal 4:6; Job 4:9; Ps 2:9) but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and reprove with fairness for the meek of the earth.
He shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked.
5 (Eph 6:14; Isa 25:1) Righteousness shall be the belt of his loins,
and faithfulness the belt about his waist.
6 (Isa 65:25; Hos 2:18) The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
and a little child shall lead them.
7 The cow and the bear shall graze;
their young ones shall lie down together;
and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8 The nursing child shall play by the hole of the asp,
and the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper's den.
9 (Hab 2:14; Job 5:23) They shall not hurt or destroy
in all My holy mountain,
for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord,
as the waters cover the sea.
10 (Isa 11:1; Lk 2:32) In that day there shall be a Root of Jesse,
who shall stand as a banner to the peoples. For him shall the nations seek.
And his rest shall be glorious.
11 (Ge 10:22; Mic 7:12) In that day the Lord shall set His hand
again the second time to recover the remnant of His people,
who shall be left, from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros,
from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath,
and from the islands of the sea.
12 (Isa 11:10; 56:8) He shall set up a banner for the nations,
and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel,
and gather together the dispersed of Judah
from the four corners of the earth.
13 (Jer 3:18; Hos 1:11) The envy also of Ephraim shall depart,
and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off;
Ephraim shall not envy Judah,
and Judah shall not harass Ephraim.

After years of discipling Caleb by himself, Mark was dismayed to find out that
a church leader had assigned another mentor to the young man. The leader
remarked, "Finally, Caleb has a mentor."
What did they think I was doing all these years? Mark wondered. Though he had
not expected any reward or recognition, he couldn't help feeling hurt.
Years later, however, Caleb told Mark that he'd entered Caleb's life just when
he most needed spiritual guidance. On hearing these encouraging words, Mark
came to this realisation: God gives believers in Jesus specific gifts
to serve Him differently - without comparing with others - and He oversees
the timing.
In 1 Corinthians 12:4-31, Paul stresses the value of members of the body
of Christ, the church, having different gifts, roles, and assignments.
And in chapter 3, he reminds us of the one who's the ultimate source
of the results: "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has
been making it grow" (v. 6).
Each of us may be given a unique season and opportunity to do God's work.
Unlike people, God doesn't compare our work, for He loves us as individuals.
May we keep our eyes and hearts focused on doing our best in the season that
God has given us - relying completely on His strength and empowerment - and
not worry about what others achieve in their own way and time.

Misty was only 4 when her parents divorced. Her dad moved away,
and the following summer she went with her grandparents to visit him
in his new apartment. In the swimming pool one afternoon, Grandpa stood
Misty on the side of the pool, held out his arm, and called, "Jump!"
But Misty, normally a little fish, suddenly seemed afraid of the water,
and stood trembling on the sidewalk shaking her head.
"Jump, Misty - I'll catch you!"
"Are you sure, Grandpa?"
"Of course I'm sure! Jump!"
But Misty wouldn't jump. Finally Grandpa, a bit irritated, said, "Misty, do
you think I Won't catch you? Do you think I'll just walk away?"
The tears spilled over, and Misty sobbed. "Daddy did!"
Human support systems often fail us. We disappoint those we love, and
are disappointed by them. People simply aren't there for us
when we need them most.
But God promises that with him things are different. He's always there,
always listening, always caring, always ready to support us.
"Underneath his everlasting arms".
Sometimes those arms reach out clothed in flesh, in the warm embrace
of a loved one. Sometimes they support us through the Word, sometimes through
the quiet peace that comes in prayer. Sometimes we are not aware of them
at all, but they still hold us up, supporting, surrounding, loving.
Underneath us are the everlasting arms.
Application
a) Have I ever felt abandoned by someone I loved and depended upon?
b) How have I experienced the faithfulness of God's "Everlasting arms"?
c) Now can this verse help me in times when I feel my supports have given way?

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,
"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even on My menservants and maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below:
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.

for her who was in anguish. In the former time He contemptuously
treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
but in the latter time He shall make it glorious,
by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.
2 (Eph 5:8; Mt 4:16) The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwell in the land of the shadow of death,
upon them the light has shined.
3 (1Sa 30:16; Isa 26:15) You have multiplied the nation
and increased the joy;
they rejoice before You
according to the joy of harvest
and as men rejoice
when they divide the spoil.
4 (Isa 14:25; 10:26-27) For You have broken the yoke of his burden
and the bar of his shoulder,
the rod of his oppressor
as in the day of Midian's defeat.
5For all the sandals of the tramping warriors
and all the garments rolled in blood
shall be burned as fuel for the fire.
6 (Isa 7:14; Mt 28:18; Lk 2:11) For unto us a child is born,
unto us a son is given,
and the government shall be upon his shoulder.
And his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
7 (Isa 37:32; Da 2:44) Of the increase of his government and peace
there shall be no end,
upon the throne of David
and over his kingdom,
to order it and to establish it

The zeal of the Lord of Hosts
will perform this.

The Message Against Israel
8 The Lord sent a word against Jacob,
and it falls upon Israel.
9 (Isa 46:12) All the people shall know,
even Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
who say in the pride
and stoutness of heart,
10 (Mal 1:4) "The bricks are fallen down,
but we will build with hewn stones;
the sycamores are cut down,
but we will replace them with cedars."
11 Therefore, the Lord shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him,
and join his enemies together.
12 (2Ch 28:18; Isa 5:25) The Arameans shall be before
and the Philistines behind;
and they shall devour Israel with open jaws.
For all this His anger is not turned away,
and His hand is stretched out still.
13 (Hos 7:10; Isa 31:1) For the people do not turn to Him who struck them,
nor do they seek the Lord of Hosts.
14 (Isa 19:15; Rev 18:8) Therefore the Lord will cut off from Israel head
and tail, branch and bulrush, in one day.
15 (Isa 3:2-3; Mt 24:24) The elder and honorable man, he is the head;
and the prophet that teaches lies, he is the tail.
16 (Isa 3:12; Mt 15:14) For the leaders of this people cause them to err,
and those who are led by them are destroyed.

nor shall He have mercy on their fatherless and widows;

Judgment on Assyria

and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
7 (Ge 50:20; Mic 4:11-12) However he does not so intend,
nor does he plan so in his heart;
but his purpose is to destroy
and to cut off many nations.
8 (2Ki 18:24) For he says, "Are not my princes altogether kings?
9 (2Ki 16:9; 2Ch 35:20) Is not Kalno as Carchemish?
Is not Hamath as Arpad?
Is not Samaria as Damascus?
10 As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols
whose graven images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11 shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols,
so do to Jerusalem and her idols?"
12 (2Ki 19:31; Jer 50:18) When the Lord has performed all His work
on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say,
"I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria
and the glory of his high looks."
13 (Da 4:30) For he says:
"By the strength of my hand and by my wisdom,
I have done it, for I am prudent;
and I have removed the bounds of the people,
and have robbed their treasures,
and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man.
14 (Job 31:25) And my hand has found as a nest

The Returning Remnant of Israel
20 (2Ki 16:7; 2Ch 28:20 ) In that day the remnant of Israel
and those who have escaped of the house of Jacob
shall never again depend on him who struck them,
but shall depend on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
21 (Isa 9:6; 7:3) The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob,
to the mighty God.
22 (Ro 9:27-28; Da 9:27 )For though your people, O Israel,
are as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return;
the destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness.
23 For the Lord God of Hosts shall make a complete destruction,
as decreed, in the midst of all the land.
24 (Isa 37:6) Therefore, thus says the Lord God of Hosts:
O My people who dwell in Zion,
do not be afraid of the Assyrian.
He shall strike you with a rod
and shall lift up his staff against you, after the manner of Egypt.

The Righteous Branch of Jesse

but God who gives the increase.

After years of discipling Caleb by himself, Mark was dismayed to find out that
a church leader had assigned another mentor to the young man. The leader
remarked, "Finally, Caleb has a mentor."
What did they think I was doing all these years? Mark wondered. Though he had
not expected any reward or recognition, he couldn't help feeling hurt.
Years later, however, Caleb told Mark that he'd entered Caleb's life just when
he most needed spiritual guidance. On hearing these encouraging words, Mark
came to this realisation: God gives believers in Jesus specific gifts
to serve Him differently - without comparing with others - and He oversees
the timing.
In 1 Corinthians 12:4-31, Paul stresses the value of members of the body
of Christ, the church, having different gifts, roles, and assignments.
And in chapter 3, he reminds us of the one who's the ultimate source
of the results: "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has
been making it grow" (v. 6).
Each of us may be given a unique season and opportunity to do God's work.
Unlike people, God doesn't compare our work, for He loves us as individuals.
May we keep our eyes and hearts focused on doing our best in the season that
God has given us - relying completely on His strength and empowerment - and
not worry about what others achieve in their own way and time.

Misty was only 4 when her parents divorced. Her dad moved away,
and the following summer she went with her grandparents to visit him
in his new apartment. In the swimming pool one afternoon, Grandpa stood
Misty on the side of the pool, held out his arm, and called, "Jump!"
But Misty, normally a little fish, suddenly seemed afraid of the water,
and stood trembling on the sidewalk shaking her head.
"Jump, Misty - I'll catch you!"
"Are you sure, Grandpa?"
"Of course I'm sure! Jump!"
But Misty wouldn't jump. Finally Grandpa, a bit irritated, said, "Misty, do
you think I Won't catch you? Do you think I'll just walk away?"
The tears spilled over, and Misty sobbed. "Daddy did!"
Human support systems often fail us. We disappoint those we love, and
are disappointed by them. People simply aren't there for us
when we need them most.
But God promises that with him things are different. He's always there,
always listening, always caring, always ready to support us.
"Underneath his everlasting arms".
Sometimes those arms reach out clothed in flesh, in the warm embrace
of a loved one. Sometimes they support us through the Word, sometimes through
the quiet peace that comes in prayer. Sometimes we are not aware of them
at all, but they still hold us up, supporting, surrounding, loving.
Underneath us are the everlasting arms.
Application
a) Have I ever felt abandoned by someone I loved and depended upon?
b) How have I experienced the faithfulness of God's "Everlasting arms"?
c) Now can this verse help me in times when I feel my supports have given way?

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,
"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even on My menservants and maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below:
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
