[1] And the chief fathers of the families of the children of Gilead, the son
of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came
near, and spake before Moses, and before the princes, the chief fathers of
the children of Israel:
[2] And they said, The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for an
inheritance by lot to the children of Israel: and my lord was commanded by
the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother unto his
daughters.
[3] And if they be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the
children of Israel, then shall their inheritance be taken from the
inheritance of our fathers, and shall be put to the inheritance of the tribe
whereunto they are received: so shall it be taken from the lot of our
inheritance.

received: so shall their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of

[7] So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe
to tribe: for every one of the children of Israel shall keep himself to the
inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
[8] And every daughter, that possesseth an inheritance in any tribe of the
children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her
father, that the children of Israel may enjoy every man the inheritance of
his fathers.
[9] Neither shall the inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe;
but every one of the tribes of the children of Israel shall keep himself to
his own inheritance.
[10] Even as the LORD commanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelophehad:
[11] For Mahlal, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of
Zelophehad, were married unto their father's brothers' sons:
[12] And they were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son
of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of
their father.
[13] These are the commandments and the judgments, which the LORD commanded
by the hand of Moses unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by

the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre,
10 (Ge 23:16; 49:31) the field that Abraham purchased
from the sons of Heth. There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah.

Isaac lived at Beer Lahai Roi.

Thirty years ago, I participated in an activity at an unemployment workshop
that I still remember today. My fellow laid-off coworkers and I were asked to
write our retirement speeches. Huh? We were looking for work and far from
retirement age. But the facilitator revealed the purpose of the activity by
saying, "Your speech will probably have little to do with your work." She
explained to us that a job really isn't the center of our lives. And while
we may be grieving the loss of a job, our lives mean much more than being
employed.
The details about the end of Abraham's life remind me of this lesson. He died
at a "ripe old age" and had lived a "long and satisfying life"
(Genesis 25:8 nlt). Throughout Scripture, we read about Abraham's
faithfulness in following God's instructions, but we don't read much about
his work. The faith the patriarch displayed (15:6) reminds me of the Teacher's
conclusion in Ecclesiastes: "To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom,
knowledge and happiness" (2:26). The Teacher said this after considering
the meaning of life and how one can find enjoyment in the midst of work
or toil (vv. 24-25).
Even during times of loss and anxiety brought by unemployment, it's helpful
to reflect on Abraham's example and the Teacher's words - pointing us to true
satisfaction found only in God.

Romans 6:23

"I only want my rights," declares the belligerent Big Ghost, one of the
characters in C. S. Lewis's classic, The Great Divorce. "I'm not asking
for anybody's bleeding charity."
"Then do. At once," his angelic friend Len urges. "Ask for the Bleeding
Charity. Everything is here for the asking and nothing can be bought."
Often we are much like the Ghost in Lewis's tale of heaven and hell.
We want "What we deserve," and being blind to our own sin, we think
we deserve praise, or al least mercy. But Paul is very clear on what
we have coming: "The wages of sin is death".
We work for our wages - we've earned our paycheque, and we deserve it.
We don't have to thank anyone for paying us - it's our due, not a gift.
Similarly, the paycheque issued to us in renumeration for our sin is
what we deserve: death.
Yet, if we are willing to lay aside our pride and accept God's gift,
we can live. "The gift of God is eternal life." Nothing we can do or say
can make us worthy of the gift of life. We are sinners by nature and we
rebel against God in our choices. Yet God, in Christ, offers grace to us,
freedom from sin, liberty from the burden of trying to earn his favour.
Ironically, freedom and peace in the Christian life come not through
justifying ourselves and making ourselves look good, but through
acknowledging the depth of our sin ad our ability to do anything about it.
When we realise that we are trapped in out sinful selves and only
Christ can free us, then we are ready to journey toward grace and freedom.

Cities of Refuge
6 (Jos 21:3; 21:13) Among the cities which you will give to the Levites
there will be six cities of refuge, which you will appoint
for the manslayer, that he may flee there,
and to them you will add 42 cities.
7 So all the cities which you will give to the Levites will be 48 cities.
You will give them with their pasturelands.
8 (Nu 26:54; 33:54) The cities which you shall give shall be from
the possession of the children of Israel. From the larger tribes
you shall give many, and from the smaller tribes you shall give few.
Each tribe, in proportion to the inheritance that it receives,
shall give of its cities to the Levites.
9 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
10 Speak to the children of Israel and say to them:
When you are crossing over the Jordan into the land of Canaan,
11 (Ex 21:13; Jos 20:2) then you shall designate cities as
your cities of refuge,
so that a manslayer who unintentionally kills a person may flee there.
12 (Dt 19:6; Jos 20:3-6) The cities will be for you a refuge from
the avenger, so that the manslayer does not die until he stands trial
before the assembly.
13 The cities which you designate shall be your six cities of refuge.
14 You will give three cities across the Jordan, and three cities you
will give in the land of Canaan, which will be cities of refuge.
15 (Nu 15:16) For the children of Israel, and for the stranger,
and for the foreign sojourner among them will be six cities.
These will be for a refuge. Everyone that unintentionally kills

the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.
26 But if the manslayer will go out at any time beyond
the border of the city of his refuge where he fled,
27 and the avenger of blood finds him outside the borders of the city of
his refuge, and the avenger of blood kills the manslayer, he will not
be guilty of blood,
28 because the manslayer should have remained in the city of his refuge
until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest
the manslayer may return to the land of his possession.
29 (Nu 27:11) So these things will be for a statute of judgment to you
throughout your generations in all your dwelling places.

to death by the testimony of witnesses, but one witness will not testify
against a person for death.

Marriage of Female Heirs
Nu 27:1-11
1 (Nu 27:1)And the chief fathers of the families of the children of Gilead
the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph,
came near, and spoke before Moses and before the leaders, the chief fathers
of the children of Israel.
2 (Nu 33:54) And they said, "The Lord commanded my lord to give the land
for an inheritance by lot to the children of Israel,
and my lord was commanded by the Lord to give the inheritance of Zelophehad
our brother to his daughters.
3 If they are married to any of the sons of the other tribes
of the children of Israel, then their inheritance
will be taken from the inheritance
of our fathers and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to
which they are married, so will it be taken from the lot of our inheritance.
4 When the jubilee of the children of Israel happens, then their inheritance
will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they are married,
so their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe
of our fathers."
5 (Nu 27:7) Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word
of the Lord, saying: "The tribe of the sons of Joseph has spoken right.
6 (Nu 36:12) This is the thing which the Lord commands concerning

NUMBERS 34
The Borders of Canaan
1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
2 (Ge 17:8; Ps 105:11) Command the children of Israel, and say to them:
When you are going into the land of Canaan, this is the land that will fall
to you for an inheritance, the land of Canaan with its borders.
3 (Ge 14:3; Eze 47:13) Then your south side will be from the Wilderness
of Zin along by the border of Edom, and your south border will be
the end of the Dead Sea to the east.
4 (Nu 32:8) And your border will turn from the south
to the Ascent of Akrabbim, and continue to Zin, and the end of it will be
from the south to Kadesh Barnea. Then it will continue to Hazar Addar,
and pass on to Azmon.
5 (Jos 15:4; Ge 15:18; Jos 15:47) And the border will circle around
from Azmon to the Brook of Egypt, and the end of it will be
at the Mediterranean Sea.
6 For the western border, you will have the Mediterranean Sea
and its coastline. This will be your western border.
7 (Nu 33:37) This will be your northern border:
From the Mediterranean Sea you will mark a line to Mount Hor;
8 (Nu 13:21; 2Ki 14:25) from Mount Hor you will mark a line of your border
to Lebo Hamath, and the limits of the border will be to Zedad.
9 (Eze 47:17) And the border will go on to Ziphron, and the limits of it will
be at Hazar Enan. This will be your northern border.
10 You will mark a line for your eastern border from Hazar Enan to Shepham.
11 (Dt 3:17; 2Ki 23:33) And the border will go down from Shepham to Riblah,
on the east side of Ain, and the border will go down and will reach the side
of the Sea of Kinnereth to the east.
12 (Nu 34:3) And the border will go down to the Jordan, and the limits of it
will be at the Dead Sea.
This will be your land with its borders all around.
13 Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying:
This is the land which you will possess by lot,
which the Lord commanded to give to the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe
14 (Nu 32:33) because the tribe of the children of Reuben by the house
of their fathers and the tribe of the children of Gad by the house of their
fathers have received their inheritance, and half the tribe of Manasseh
has received their inheritance.
15 The two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance
on this side of the Jordan near Jericho to the east, toward the sunrise.

at Hazar-enan: this shall be your north border.
[10] And ye shall point out your east border from Hazar-enan to Shepham:
[11] And the coast shall go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of
Ain; and the border shall descend, and shall reach unto the side of the sea
of Chinnereth eastward:
[12] And the border shall go down to Jordan, and the goings out of it shall
be at the salt sea: this shall be your land with the coasts thereof round
about.
[13] And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, This is the land
which ye shall inherit by lot, which the LORD commanded to give unto the
nine tribes, and to the half tribe:
[14] For the tribe of the children of Reuben according to the house of their
fathers, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to the house of
their fathers, have received their inheritance; and half the tribe of

of the tribe of Judah,
Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
20 of the tribe of the children of Simeon,
Shemuel the son of Ammihud;
21 of the tribe of Benjamin,
Elidad the son of Kislon;
22 the leader of the tribe of the children of Dan,
Bukki the son of Jogli;
23 the leader of the children of Joseph,
for the tribe of the children of Manasseh,
Hanniel the son of Ephod;
24 the leader of the tribe of the children of Ephraim,
Kemuel the son of Shiphtan;
25 the leader of the tribe of the children of Zebulun,
Elizaphan the son of Parnak;
26 the leader of the tribe of the children of Issachar,
Paltiel the son of Azzan;
27 the leader of the tribe of the children of Asher,
Ahihud the son of Shelomi;
28 the leader of the tribe of the children of Naphtali,
Pedahel the son of Ammihud.
29 These are the ones whom the Lord commanded to divide the inheritance
among the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.
[16] And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
[17] These are the names of the men which shall divide the land unto you:
Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun.
[18] And ye shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land by
inheritance.
[19] And the names of the men are these: Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the
son of Jephunneh.
[20] And of the tribe of the children of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud.
[21] Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon.
[22] And the prince of the tribe of the children of Dan, Bukki the son of

The Levites' Cities
(Dt 4:41-43; 19:1-14; Jos 20:1-9)
1 (Nu 22:1) And the Lord spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab
by Jordan near Jericho, saying:
2 (Jos 14:3-4; Eze 48:8) Command the children of Israel,
and they will give to the Levites of the inheritance of their possession
cities to dwell in, and you will give the Levites pasturelands
around the city.
3 The cities will be for them to dwell in, and their pasturelands will be
for their livestock, and for their property, and for all their animals.
4 The pasturelands of the cities, which you will give to the Levites,
will reach from the wall of the city
and beyond one thousand cubits
(About 1,500 feet, or 450 meters.)
all around.
5 You will measure from without the city on the east side two thousand

They sit side by side on Ball Street in my city - the Grand Ideas Garden and
the county jail. My friend Joann loved both places. She loved to sit in the
garden, thinking about the goodness of God and her love for Him because of
what He'd done in her life. She also loved to share with the women in the jail
and tell her story of God redeeming her life after many bad choices and
wandering far from Him. Often, she would tell me of her passion: her dream
that all the women there would someday understand and experience the love
of God for them personally.
The psalmist told his fellow Israelites to "tell their story" of how God
redeemed them from their enemies (Psalm 107:2). They had "wandered in desert
wastelands," "they were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away"
(vv. 4-5). At times they rebelled against God, and He disciplined them
(vv. 10-12). Yet every time "they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
. . . he delivered them from their distress" (v. 6). They had much to give
God thanks for and to talk about with others. As the Israelites learned, and
we can learn also, He has a love that will never let us go.
We too can take opportunities to "ponder the loving deeds of the Lord" toward
us (v. 43), give thanks to Him, and tell our own story of His rescue.

The Tribes Settling in Gilead

2 the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses,
and to Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the assembly, saying,
3 (Nu 32:34-38; Jos 13:17) "Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah,
and Hesh-bon, and Elealeh, and Sebam, and Nebo, and Beon,

and your servants have livestock."
5 And they said, "If we have found mercy in your sight, let this land
be given to your servants for a possession,

"Will your brothers go to war, and you will dwell here?
7 And why would you discourage the hearts of the children of Israel
from going over into the land which the Lord has given to them?
8 Thus your fathers did, when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.
9 When they went up to the Valley of Eshkol and saw the land,
they discouraged the hearts of the children of Israel so they would not go
into the land which the Lord had given them.
10 (Nu 14:11) And the anger of the Lord was inflamed on that day,
and He swore, saying,
11 (Nu 14:28-30) 'Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt,
from twenty years old and older, will see the ground which I swore
to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they did not completely
follow Me,

and Joshua the son of Nun, because they completely followed the Lord.'

14 "Behold, you have risen up in your fathers' place, an increase of sinful

them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people."
16 They approached him and said, "We will build sheepfolds here for
our livestock and cities for our children.

before the children of Israel, until we have brought them to their place.
Our little ones will dwell in the fortified cities
because of the inhabitants of the land.

or beyond, because our inheritance
fell to us on this side of the Jordan to the east."

be armed before the Lord for war,

until He has driven out His enemies from before Him

that you will return and be exempt before the Lord and before Israel,
and this land will be your possession before the Lord.

of the children of Israel.
29 And Moses said to them, "If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben
will cross over the Jordan with you, each man armed for battle
before the Lord, and the land will be subdued before you, you are
to give them the land of Gilead as a possession.
30 But if they do not cross over with you armed, they will have possessions
among you in the land of Canaan."
31 The children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying,
"As the Lord has said to your servants, so we will do.
32 We will cross over, armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan,
so the possession of our inheritance on this side of the Jordan may be ours."
33 (Jos 12:6; Dt 3:12-17) Moses gave to the children of Gad,
to the children of Reuben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh
the son of Joseph,
the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites
and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land with the cities
within the borders, the cities of the surrounding land.
34 (Dt 2:36; Nu 32:3) The children of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer,
35 (Nu 32:1; 32:3) Atroth Shophan and Jazer and Jogbehah,
36 (Nu 32:3) Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, fortified cities,
and folds for sheep.
37 (Nu 21:27; 32:3) And the children of Reuben built Heshbon
and Elealeh and Kiriathaim,

and Sibmah; and they named the other cities which they built.
39 (Ge 50:23) The children of Makir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead
and captured it and drove out the Amorites who were in it.

and he lived in it.

and captured its small towns and called them Havvoth Jair.
42 Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages
and called it Nobah, after his own name.
Numbers 31
Dividing the Plunder
25 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
26 "Take the count of the plunder that was taken, of man and of beast,
you and Eleazar the priest, and the chief of the fathers of the assembly.
27 (Jos 22:8) And divide the prey into two parts between those that took
the war on themselves, who went out to battle, and between all the assembly.
28 (Nu 18:26; 31:30) And levy a tribute to the Lord
from the fighting men of Israel who went out to battle:
1 person out of 500, of the people and of the oxen, and of the donkeys,
and of the sheep;
29 take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest
as an offering to the Lord.
30 (Nu 3:7-8; 3:25) Of the half of the children of Israel, you will take
one portion of fifty, of the people, of the oxen, of the donkeys,
and of the flocks, of all manner of beasts, and give them to the Levites,
who keep the guard of the tabernacle of the Lord."

32 The plunder, being the rest of the prey, which the fighting men of Israel
had caught, was 675000 sheep,
33 72000 oxen,
34 and 61000 donkeys,

who had not known a man by lying with him.
36 The half, which was the portion of those that went out to war,
was 337500 sheep.
37 And the Lord's tribute of the sheep was 675.
38 The oxen were 36000, of which the Lord's tribute was 72.
39 The donkeys were 30500, of which the Lord's tribute was 61.
40 The people were 16000, of which the Lord's tribute was 32 people.
41 (Nu 18:8; 18:19) Moses gave the tribute which was the Lord's offering
to Eleazar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses.
42 Of the half of the children of Israel,
which Moses divided from the men who fought,
43 the half belonging to the assembly was 337500 sheep,
44 36000 oxen,
45 53500 donkeys,
46 and 16000 people.
47 (Nu 31:30) From the half of the children of Israel Moses took one out
of fifty, of man and of beast, and gave them to the Levites, who kept
the guard of the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.
48 The officers who were over thousands of the army,
the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds,
came near to Moses,
49 and they said to Moses, "Your servants have taken
the count of the fighting men of Israel who are in our hand,
and not a man of us is missing.
50 (Ex 30:12; 30:15-16) We have brought an offering for the Lord,
what every man has gotten of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets,
rings, earrings, and pendants, to make an atonement for ourselves
before the Lord."
51 Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them,
all in the form of fashioned articles.
52 All the gold of the offering that they offered up to the Lord,
of the captains of thousands and of the captains of hundreds,
was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
(About 420 pounds, or 190 kilograms. )
53 (Dt 20:14) The fighting men of Israel had taken plunder,
each man for himself.
54 (Ex 30:16) And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains
of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting
as a memorial for the children of Israel before the Lord.
[25] And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
[26] Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of beast,
thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the congregation:
[27] And divide the prey into two parts; between them that took the war upon
them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation:
[28] And levy a tribute unto the LORD of the men of war which went out to
battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the beeves,
and of the asses, and of the sheep:
[29] Take it of their half, and give it unto Eleazar the priest, for an
heave offering of the LORD.
[30] And of the children of Israel's half, thou shalt take one portion of
fifty, of the persons, of the beeves, of the asses, and of the flocks, of

of the tabernacle of the LORD.

[32] And the booty, being the rest of the prey which the men of war had
caught, was six hundred thousand and seventy thousand and five thousand
sheep,
[33] And threescore and twelve thousand beeves,
[34] And threescore and one thousand asses,
[35] And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of woman that had not known
man by lying with him.
[36] And the half, which was the portion of them that went out to war, was

Unity of the Body

In January 1967, the town of Winneconne discovered it had been mistakenly
omitted from the official Wisconsin state road map, costing the town vital
tourist revenue. So the town decided to secede from Wisconsin and become its
own sovereign state on July 21 of that year. Some say the secession was a
move to embarrass the state government, while others claim it was
a tongue-in-cheek act of humour. In any case, months of negotiations resulted
in state and town coming together again on July 22, 1967.
Most division isn't as good-natured or as easily resolved. Division is such a
threat that the book of Proverbs lists "the person who stirs up conflict"
(6:19) as one of seven things "that are detestable to [God]" (v. 16).
Division may not only cause problems but misrepresents Jesus and His Father.
The night before the cross, Christ prayed that His followers would be one in
Him, "that the world may believe that you have sent me" (John 17:21).
Jesus made it clear that our unity as brothers and sisters in Christ (or lack
of it) impacts the world's belief in Him! Perhaps that's why Paul told the
Ephesians, "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the
bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:3). May we allow the Spirit of Christ to make us
one-that the world may be drawn to Him.

The Law About Vows

of Israel, saying: This is the thing that the Lord has commanded.
2 (Job 22:27; Ps 22:25) If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears
an oath to bind himself with a bond, he will not break his word.
He will do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
3 If a woman makes a vow to the Lord, and binds herself by a bond,
while in her father's house in her youth,
4 and her father hears her vow and her bond with which she has bound
herself, and her father is silent to her, then all her vows will stand,
and every bond with which she has bound herself will stand.
5 But if her father restrains her in the day he hears, none of her vows
or her bonds with which she has bound herself will stand,
and the Lord will forgive her, because her father restrained her.
6 (Ps 56:12) If she had a husband when she vowed, or uttered anything
out of her lips with which she bound herself,

NUMBERS 31
Vengeance on the Midianites
1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
2 (Nu 27:13) "Avenge the children of Israel on the Midianites.
Afterward you will be gathered to your people."
3 (Lev 26:25) Moses spoke to the people, saying,
"Arm some of your men for war, and let them go against the Midianites
to give the vengeance of the Lord against Midian.
4 A thousand from each tribe, throughout all the tribes of Israel,
you will send to the war."
5 So there were delivered from the thousands of Israel
1000 of each tribe, 12000 armed for war.
6 (Nu 14:44; 10:8-9) Moses sent them to the war, a thousand from each tribe,
with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the holy vessels
and the trumpets to sound the alarm in his hand.
7 (Jdg 21:11; 1Ki 11:15-16) They waged war against the Midianites,
as the Lord commanded Moses, and they killed every male.
8 (Nu 25:15; Jos 13:21-22) They killed the kings of Midian,
in addition to the rest of those who were killed:
Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba,
five kings of Midian. Balaam the son of Beor they also killed with the sword.

to meet them outside the camp.
14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army, with the captains

15 (1Sa 15:3) Moses said to them, "Have you saved all the women alive?
16 (2Pe 2:15; Rev 2:14) These caused the children of Israel, through
the word of Balaam, to act unfaithfully against the Lord concerning

him, keep alive for yourselves.
[19] And do ye abide without the camp seven days: whosoever hath killed any
person, and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify both yourselves and
your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.
[20] And purify all your raiment, and all that is made of skins, and all
work of goats' hair, and all things made of wood.
[21] And Eleazar the priest said unto the men of war which went to the
battle, This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD commanded Moses;

lead,

the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah, and Tirzah.
2 They stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest,
and before the leaders and all the assembly by the door of the tent
of meeting, saying,
3 (Nu 26:64-65; 14:35) "Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not
in the company of them that gathered against the Lord, in the company
of Korah, but died in his own sin and had no sons.

Joshua to Succeed Moses

to your people as Aaron your brother was gathered.

Daily Offerings
1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

In a holy place you will pour the strong wine
to the Lord as a drink offering.
8 The other lamb you will offer at evening. As the morning grain offering
and its drink offering, you will offer it as an offering made by fire,
a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

[4] The one lamb shalt thou offer in the morning, and the other lamb shalt

the fourth part of an hin of beaten oil.
[6] It is a continual burnt offering, which was ordained in mount Sinai for
a sweet savour, a sacrifice made by fire unto the LORD.
[7] And the drink offering thereof shall be the fourth part of an hin for
the one lamb: in the holy place shalt thou cause the strong wine to be
poured unto the LORD for a drink offering.
[8] And the other lamb shalt thou offer at even: as the meat offering of the

Sabbath Offerings
9 On the Sabbath day two lambs in their first year, without blemish,

(Likely about 7 pounds, or 3.2 kilograms; and in vv. 12, 20, and 28.)
of flour as a grain offering, mixed with oil, and its drink offering -
10 (Eze 46:4-5) this is the burnt offering of every Sabbath, in addition
to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.
[9] And on the sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two

[10] This is the burnt offering of every sabbath, beside the continual burnt

Monthly Offerings
11 (Nu 10:10; Eze 46:6) At the beginnings of your months you will offer
a burnt offering to the Lord: two young bulls, one ram, seven lambs in
their first year, without blemish;
12 (Nu 15:4-12) 3/10ths of an ephah
(Likely about 11 pounds, or 5 kilograms; and in vv. 20 and 28.)
of flour as a grain offering, mixed with oil, for one bull; and 2/10ths
of an ephah of flour as a grain offering, mixed with oil, for one ram;
13 and 1/10 of an ephah of flour mixed with oil as a grain offering
for one lamb; as a burnt offering of a pleasing aroma, a sacrifice made
by fire to the Lord.
14 Their drink offerings will be 1/2 a hin (About 2 quarts, or 1.9 liters. )
of wine for a bull, and one-third of a hin
(About 1 1/3 quarts, or 1.3 liters.)
for a ram, and 1/4 of a hin for a lamb. This is the burnt offering
of each month throughout the months of the year.
15 (Nu 28:3; 15:24) Also one male goat as a sin offering to the Lord shall
be offered, besides the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.

of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.
3 (Jos 22:17; Hos 9:10) Israel joined himself to the Baal of Peor,
and the anger of the Lord was inflamed against Israel.
4 (Dt 13:17; 4:3) The Lord said to Moses, "Take all the chiefs of the people
and hang them before the Lord in the sun, that the fierce
anger of the Lord turn from Israel."
5 (Ex 18:21) Moses said to the judges of Israel,
"Kill each of the men who have aligned themselves with the Baal of Peor."
6 (Joel 2:17; Nu 22:4) Behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought
to his brothers a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight
of all the assembly of the children of Israel, who were weeping

He was chief over a people and of a father's house in Midian.
16 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

for his God and made an atonement for the children of Israel.'"
14 Now the name of the slain Israelite who was slain with the Midianite
woman was Zimri the son of Salu,
a leader of a chief house among the Simeonites.
15 (Nu 31:8; Jos 13:21) The name of the Midianite woman that was slain
was Kozbi the daughter of Zur.
He was chief over a people and of a father's house in Midian.
16 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
17 "Be hostile to the Midianites, and defeat them,
18 (Rev 2:14) because they have been hostile to you with their wiles,
with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor
and in the matter of Kozbi the daughter of a leader of Midian,
their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague because of Peor."
Numbers 25
[1] And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom
with the daughters of Moab.
[2] And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the
people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
[3] And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Israel.

it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
[8] And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of
them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the
plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
[9] And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
[10] And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
[11] Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned
my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake
among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
[12] Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
[13] And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an
everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an

[14] Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with

NUMBERS 26
The Second Census
1 (Nu 25:9) After the plague, the Lord spoke to Moses
and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying,
2 (Ex 38:25-26; Nu 1:2-3) "Take the count of all the assembly
of the children of Israel from twenty years old and older,
throughout their fathers' houses, all that are able to go to war in Israel."
3 (Nu 22:1; 33:48) Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them
in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,
4 (Nu 1:1) "Take the count of the people from twenty years old and older,"
as the Lord commanded Moses.
The children of Israel, who went out of the land of Egypt, were these:
5 (1Ch 5:3; Ge 46:8-9) Reuben, the oldest son of Israel. The children
of Reuben:
of Hanok, from whom comes the family of the Hanokites;
of Pallu, the family of the Palluites;
6 of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites;
of Karmi, the family of the Karmites.
7 These are the families of the Reubenites:
those who were counted were 43730.
8 The son of Pallu was Eliab.
9 (Nu 1:16) The sons of Eliab were Nemuel, and Dathan, and Abiram.
This is that Dathan and Abiram, called out from the assembly, who
argued against Moses and against Aaron in the company of Korah
when they argued against the Lord.
10 (Nu 16:38; 16:31-35; 2Pe 2:6) And the earth opened its mouth
and swallowed them with Korah when that company died,
when the fire devoured 2050, and they became a sign.
11 (Ex 6:24) But the children of Korah did not die.
12 (1Ch 4:24; Ge 46:10) The sons of Simeon by their families were:
of Nemuel, the family of the Nemuelites;
of Jamin, the family of the Jaminites;
of Jakin, the family of the Jakinites;
13 (Ge 46:10) of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites;
of Shaul, the family of the Shaulites.
14 These are the families of the Simeonites: 22200.
15 (Ge 46:16) The children of Gad by their families were:
of Zephon, the family of the Zephonites;
of Haggi, the family of the Haggites;

of Eri, the family of the Erites;

18 These are the families of the children of Gad according
to those by their count: 4500 .
19 (Ge 46:12) The sons of Judah were Er and Onan,
and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.
20 (Ge 46:12; Ne 11:24) The sons of Judah after their families were:
of Shelah, the family of the Shelanites;
of Perez, the family of the Perezites;
of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites.
21 The sons of Perez were:
of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites;
of Hamul, the family of the Hamulites.

[2] And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents
according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him.
[3] And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said,
and the man whose eyes are open hath said:
[4] He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the
Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:
[5] How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel!
[6] As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as
the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as cedar trees
beside the waters.
[7] He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in
many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall
be exalted.
[8] God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of
an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their
bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.

him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth

[10] And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands

[11] Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto
great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour.

beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own

advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.
Balaam's Fourth Prophecy
15 (Nu 23:7; 24:3-4) He took up his parable and said:
"The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor,
and the oracle of the man whose eyes are open;
16 (Nu 24:4) the oracle of the one hearing the words of God,
and knowing the knowledge of the Most High,
who sees the vision of the Almighty,
falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:
17 (Ge 49:10; 2Sa 8:2; Ps 45:6) "I will see him, but not now;
I will behold him, but not near;
a star will come out of Jacob,
and a scepter will rise out of Israel,
and will crush the borderlands of Moab,
and destroy all the children of Sheth.
18 (Am 9:12; Ge 27:29) Edom will be a possession,
and Seir, a possession of its enemies,
while Israel does valiantly.
19 (Ge 49:10; Mic 5:2) One out of Jacob shall have dominion,
and destroy the survivors of the city."
20 (Ex 17:14) Then he looked on Amalek; he took up his proverb and said:
"Amalek was the first of the nations,
but his end will be that he perishes forever."
21 (Ge 15:19) He looked on the Kenites and took up his proverb and said:
"Strong is your dwelling place,
and you put your nest in a rock;
22 nevertheless the Kenite will be wasted.
How long until Ashur carries you away captive?"
23 He took up his proverb and said:
"Alas, who will live when God does this?
24 (Ge 10:4; Nu 24:20) And ships will come from the coasts of Cyprus
and will afflict Ashur and will afflict Eber,
and he also will perish forever."

Luke 8:1-3
Women Who Accompany Jesus
1 (Mt 4:23) Afterward, He went throughout every city and village, preaching
and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. With Him were the twelve
2 (Mt 27:55-56; Mk 15:40-41) and some women who had been healed
of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene,
from whom seven demons had come out,
3 (Lk 24:10) and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna,
and many others, who supported Him with their possessions.
[1] And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and
village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and
the twelve were with him,
[2] And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and
infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,
[3] And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many
others, which ministered unto him of their substance.
After wiping down tables with disinfectant, Shelia stooped to tie a garbage
bag filled with used cups and plates. She heaved the bag over her shoulder
and turned to survey the church's multipurpose room. She'd volunteered to
clean it for the next gathering and wanted to make sure it was ready.
A thought fluttered through her mind: Would anyone notice?
It's easy to wonder if our everyday contributions to the kingdom are valued.
Whether we clean, balance spreadsheets, lead a Bible study, or give money,
so many of us remain unseen in our places of service and unnamed in public
commendations.
In Luke 8:1-2, the historian catalogs the faithful service of women in the
ministry of Jesus. He lists three by name from among the women freed of evil
spirits and diseases: Mary of Magdalene; Joanna the wife of Chuza, who
managed Herod's household; and Susanna. Then Luke says,
"Many others . . . were helping to support [Jesus and His disciples] out of
their own means" (v. 3). Luke spotlights these unnamed women who invested
themselves in supporting the gospel, and so underlines their value.
Just as God includes unnamed women in His account of valuable contributions
to His kingdom, He sees our efforts. He knows our names (John 10:3),
and He sees our investment in His work (Hebrews 6:10).

Joshua 1:8
8 (Ps 19:14; 119:15) This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth.
Meditate on it day and night so that you may act carefully according
to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way successful,
and you will be wise.
8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt
meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according
to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous,
and then thou shalt have good success.
When God spoke these words to Joshua, the young leader's prospects for
"prosperity" and "success" were far from promising. Upon Moses' death,
Joshua was appointed to lead Israel into the Promised Land, to claim
the territory and establish a nation under God's rule.
Joshua was afraid, and for good reason. The people were rebellious
and intractable. And "claiming the land" meant battling many strong enemies.
Yet God told Joshua that his strength would come not in preparing for battle,
but in preparing for battle, but in preparing himself by meditating
on and applying God's word to his life.
We, too, face difficult battles as we seek to enter the "Promised Land"
of God's peace and presence. But his promise is the same as it was to Joshua:
through obedience to the Word, we can find prosperity and success.
God's promise does not necessarily mean financial prosperity
or material success. These victories may come as well, but God's primary
purpose for his people is spiritual success - the victory and joy of living
in fellowship with him. We can be enriched in the knowledge of God and
find power to overcome the enemies of sin and self. The way may not be easy
- after all, there is no victory without conflict - but God promises
that we will succeed as we look to him.
Application
a) What image do I have a personal "Promised Land" that I long
to enter and claim as my own?
b) What enemies will I need to battle in order to enter that land?
c) How can meditation on the Word of God and obedience to him bring me
prosperity and success?
