Mark 15:21-24



The Crucifixion

Mt 27:32-44; Lk 23:26-43; Jn 19:17-27



21 (Mt 27:32; Lk 23:26; Ro 16:13) They compelled a man named Simon

from Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was passing

through from the country, to bear Jesus' cross.

22 (Mt 27:33-44) They brought Him to the place called Golgotha,

which means, "Place of a Skull."

23 (Mt 27:34) They gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink,

but He did not take it.

24 When they had crucified Him, they divided His garments,

casting lots for them, to decide what each man should take.



[21] And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the

country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.

[22] And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being

interpreted, The place of a skull.

[23] And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it

Matthew 27:32-34



The Crucifixion

Mk 15:21-32; Lk 23:26-43; Jn 19:17-27



32 (Mk 15:21; Lk 23:26) As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene,

Simon by name. This man they compelled to bear His cross.

33 When they came to a place called Golgotha, which means

The Place of the Skull,

34 (Ps 69:21; Mt 27:48) they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink.

But when He tasted it, He would not drink it.



[32] And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him

they compelled to bear his cross.

[33] And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a

place of a skull,

[34] They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had

tasted thereof, he would not drink.



Luke 23:26-31



The Crucifixion

Mt 27:32-44; Mk 15:21-32; Jn 19:17-27



26 As they led Him away, they seized Simon of Cyrene, who was coming

from the country, and they laid the cross on him to carry it behind Jesus.

27 (Lk 8:52) A large number of people followed Him, including women

who mourned and lamented Him.

28 Jesus turned to them, saying, "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for Me,

but weep for yourselves and for your children.

29 (Mt 24:19; Hos 13:16) Listen, the days are coming when they will say,

'Blessed are the barren, who never bore and never nursed!'

30 (Isa 2:19; Hos 10:8) Then they will begin to say to the mountains,

'Fall on us,' and to the hills, 'Cover us.'

31 (Pr 11:31) For if men do these things when the tree is green,

what will happen when it is dry?"



[26] And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian,

coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might

bear it after Jesus.

[27] And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which

also bewailed and lamented him.

[28] But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for

me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

[29] For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed

are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave

suck.

[30] Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the

hills, Cover us.

[31] For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the

dry?



John 19:17



17 (Lk 23:33; 14:27; 23:26) He went out, carrying His own cross,

to a place called The Place of a Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.



[17] And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a

skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:



Mark 15:25-32



25 (Mk 15:33; Jn 19:14) Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.

26 (Mt 27:37)The inscription of His accusation was written above:

THE KING OF THE JEWS.

27 With Him they crucified two thieves, one on His right

and the other on His left.

28 And the Scripture was fulfilled, which says, "He was numbered

with the lawless ones." (Isa 53:12.)

29 (Ps 109:25; Mk 14:58) Those who passed by blasphemed Him,

shaking their heads and saying, "Ah, You who would destroy the temple

and build it in three days,

30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!"

31 Likewise the chief priests mocked Him among themselves

with the scribes and said, "He saved others, but He cannot save Himself!

32 (Lk 23:39-43; Mt 27:44) Let the Christ, the King of Israel,

descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe."

Those who were crucified with Him also reviled Him.



[25] And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.

[26] And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF

THE JEWS.

[27] And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and

the other on his left.

[28] And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with

the transgressors.

[29] And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying,

Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,

[30] Save thyself, and come down from the cross.

[31] Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the

scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.

[32] Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may

see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.



Matthew 27:35-44



35 (Ps 22:18) When they crucified Him, they divided His garments

by casting lots to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet,

"They divided My garments among themselves

and for My clothing they cast lots."(Ps 22:18.)

36 (Mt 27:54) And sitting down, they kept watch over Him there.

37 (Mk 15:26; Lk 23:38) They put His accusation over His head, which read:

THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

38 (Isa 53:12) Then two thieves were crucified with Him, one on the right

and another on the left.

39 (Ps 109:25; La 1:12) Those who passed by insulted Him, wagging their heads,

40 (Mt 26:61; 4:3) saying, "You who would destroy the temple

and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God,

come down from the cross."

41 Likewise the chief priests, with the scribes and elders,

mocked Him, saying,

42 (Jn 1:49; Mt 27:37) "He saved others. He cannot save Himself.

If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross,

and we will believe Him.

43 (Ps 22:8) He trusted in God. Let Him deliver Him now, if He will have Him.

For He said, 'I am the Son of God.' "

44 Even the thieves who were crucified with Him insulted Him in the same way.



[35] And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it

might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments

among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

[37] And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING

Luke 23:32-43



32 (Mk 15:27; Mt 27:38; Jn 19:18) Two different men, who were criminals,

also were led with Him to be killed.

33 (Mt 27:33-34; Mk 15:22-23) When they came to the place which is called

The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right

and one on the left.

34 (Ps 22:18; Mt 5:44; Mk 15:24) Jesus said, "Father, forgive them,

for they know not what they do." And they divided His clothes

by casting lots.

35 (Ps 22:17; Isa 42:1) The people stood by watching. But the rulers

with them scoffed, saying, "He saved others. Let Him save Himself

if He is the Christ, the Chosen One of God."

36 (Mt 27:48; Ps 69:21) And the soldiers also mocked Him,

coming to Him and offering Him sour wine,

37 saying, "If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself."

38 (Mt 27:37; Mk 15:26) An inscription was written over Him in letters

of Greek and Latin and Hebrew:

THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

39 (Mt 27:44; Mk 15:32) One of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him,

saying, "If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us!"

40 But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God,

seeing you are under the same sentence?

41 And we indeed, justly. For we are receiving the due reward of our deeds.

But this Man has done nothing amiss."

42 Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom."

43 (Rev 2:7; Isa 53:11; 2Co 5:8) Jesus said to him,

"Truly, I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise."



[32] And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to

death.

[33] And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there

they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the

other on the left.

[34] Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

[35] And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided

him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the

chosen of God.

[36] And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him

vinegar,

[37] And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.

[38] And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and

[39] And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If

[42] And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy

kingdom.

[43] And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be

with me in paradise.



John 19:18-27



18 There they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side,

and Jesus in the middle.

19 (Mt 27:37; Mk 15:26) Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross.

The writing was:

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 (Jn 19:13) Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus

was crucified was near the city. And it was written in Hebrew,

in Greek, and in Latin.

21 (Jn 19:14) The chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate,

"Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but 'He said, I am King of the Jews.' "

22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."

23 (Lk 23:34; Mt 27:35) When the soldiers had crucified Jesus,

they took His garments and divided them into four parts,

a part for each soldier; and also His tunic.

Now the tunic was seamless, woven from top to bottom.

24 (Ps 22:18; Jn 19:28) So they said to one another,

"Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to decide whose it shall be."

This happened to fulfill the Scripture which says:

"They divided My garments among them,

and for My clothing they cast lots." (Ps 22:18.)

Therefore the soldiers did these things.

25 (Lk 23:49; Mt 27:55-56; Mk 15:40-41) But standing by the cross of Jesus

were His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,

and Mary Magdalene.

26 (Jn 13:23; 2:4; 20:2) When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple

whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother,

"Woman, here is your son."

27 (Jn 16:32; 1:11) Then He said to the disciple, "Here is your mother."

From that time, this disciple took her to his own home.



[18] Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one,

and Jesus in the midst.

[19] And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was,

JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

[20] This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was

crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and

Latin.

[21] Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King

of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

[22] Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

[23] Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments,

and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the

coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

[24] They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots

for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which

saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast

lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

[25] Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's

sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

[26] When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom

he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

[27] Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour

that disciple took her unto his own home.



Mark 15:33-41



The Death of Jesus

Mt 27:45-56; Lk 23:44-49; Jn 19:28-30



33 (Mt 27:45; Mk 15:25; Lk 23:44-45) When the sixth hour had come,

there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

34 (Ps 22:1; Mt 27:46; Lk 23:46) And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out

with a loud voice, saying, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which means,

"My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"(Ps 22:1.)

35 Some of those who stood by, when they heard it, said,

"Listen, He is calling Elijah!"

36 (Ps 69:21; Mk 15:23) One man ran and filled a sponge with vinegar,

put it on a stick, and gave it to Him to drink, saying,

"Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down."

37 (Jn 19:30; Mt 27:50) But Jesus cried with a loud voice

and gave up the spirit.

38 (Lk 23:45) And the curtain of the temple was torn

in two from top to bottom.

39 (Mt 27:54; 27:43) When the centurion

(Commander with the rank of captain over 100 soldiers.)

who stood facing Him saw that He cried out and gave up the spirit,

he said, "Truly, this Man was the Son of God."

40 (Ps 38:11; Mt 27:55-56) There were also women looking on from

a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother

of James the Less and of Joseph, and Salome.

41 (Lk 8:2-3) They also had followed Him and had ministered

to Him when He was in Galilee. And many other women who came up

with Him to Jerusalem were there.



[33] And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole

land until the ninth hour.

[34] And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi,

Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why

hast thou forsaken me?

[35] And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he

calleth Elias.

[36] And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed,

to take him down.

cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of

God.

[40] There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary

Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the

less and of Joses, and Salome;

[41] (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto

him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.



Matthew 27:45-56



The Death of Jesus

45 (Am 8:9; Mk 15:33-34) Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour

there was darkness over all the land.

46 (Ps 22:1; Lk 23:46; Heb 5:7) About the ninth hour Jesus cried out

with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which means,

"My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"(Ps 22:1.)

47 Some of those who stood there heard it and said,

"This Man is calling for Elijah."

48 (Ps 69:21; Mt 27:34) Immediately one of them ran, took a sponge,

filled it with wine, and put it on a stick, and gave it to Him to drink.

49 The rest said, "Leave Him alone.

Let us see if Elijah will come to save Him."

50 (Jn 19:30; Mk 15:37) And Jesus, when He had cried out again

with a loud voice, released His spirit.

51 (Mk 15:38; Ex 26:31-37) At that moment the curtain of the temple

was torn in two, from the top to the bottom. And the ground shook,

and the rocks split apart.

52 (1Co 15:20; 1Th 4:14) The graves also were opened, and many bodies

of the saints who had died were raised,

53 (Mt 4:5) and coming out of the graves after His resurrection,

they went into the Holy City and appeared to many.

54 (Mt 27:36; 27:43) When the centurion and those with him,

keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place,

they feared greatly and said, "Truly He was the Son of God!"

55 (Lk 8:2-3) Many women who were there watching from afar followed

Jesus from Galilee, serving Him,

56 (Jn 19:25; Mt 28:1) among whom was Mary Magdalene,

and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.



[45] Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the

ninth hour.

[46] And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli,

Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou

forsaken me?

[47] Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man

calleth for Elias.

[48] And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with

vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.

[49] The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.

[50] Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

[51] And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to

the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

[52] And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept

arose,

[53] And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the

holy city, and appeared unto many.

[54] Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus,

saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly,

saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

[55] And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from

Galilee, ministering unto him:

[56] Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses,

and the mother of Zebedee's children.



Luke 23:44-49



The Death of Jesus

Mt 27:45-56; Mk 15:33-41; Jn 19:28-30



44 (Am 8:9; Mt 27:45) It was now about the sixth hour,

and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour,

45 (Ex 26:31-33; 2Ch 3:14) while the sun was darkened.

And the veil of the temple was torn in the middle.

46 (Jn 19:30; Ps 31:5; Ac 7:59) And Jesus cried out with a loud voice,

"Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit."

Having said this, He gave up the spirit.

47 (Mt 27:54; Mk 15:39) When the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified

God and said, :Certainly, this was a righteous Man."

48 (Lk 18:13) All the crowds who came together to that sight,

witnessing what occurred, struck their chests and ­returned.

49 (Lk 8:2; Ps 38:11; Mt 27:55-56) But all those who knew Him

and the women accompanying Him from Galilee stood at a distance,

seeing these things.



[44] And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the

earth until the ninth hour.

[45] And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the

midst.

[46] And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy

hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

[47] Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying,

Certainly this was a righteous man.

[48] And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the

things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.

[49] And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee,

stood afar off, beholding these things.



John 19:28-37



The Death of Jesus

Mt 27:45-56; Mk 15:33-41; Lk 23:44-49



28 (Ps 69:21; Jn 13:1) After this, Jesus, knowing that everything

was now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said,

"I thirst."

29 (Mt 27:48; Mk 15:36) A bowl full of sour wine was placed there.

So they put a sponge full of sour wine on hyssop and held it to His mouth.

30 (Lk 23:46; Jn 17:4) When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said,

"It is finished." And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.



[28] After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that

the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

[29] Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge

with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

[30] When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished:

and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.



The Piercing of Jesus' Side



31 (Jn 19:14; 19:42; Jos 8:29) Since it was the Day of Preparation,

to prevent bodies from remaining on the cross on the Sabbath day

(for that Sabbath day was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate

that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

32 (Jn 19:18) Therefore the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first

and of the other who was crucified with Him.

33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was dead already,

they did not break His legs.

34 (1Jn 5:6; 5:8) However, one of the soldiers pierced His side

with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

35 (Jn 21:24; 15:27) He who saw it has testified, and his testimony is true.

He knows that he is telling the truth, that you may believe.

36 (Ps 34:20; Ex 12:46; Nu 9:12) For these things happened so that

the Scripture should be fulfilled, "Not one of His bones shall be broken,"

(Ex 12:46; Nu 9:12; Ps 34:20.)

37 (Zec 12:10; Rev 1:7; Ps 22:16-17) and again another Scripture says,

"They shall look on Him whom they have pierced." (Zec 12:10.)



[31] The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies

should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day

was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that

they might be taken away.

[32] Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the

other which was crucified with him.

[33] But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they

brake not his legs:

[34] But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith

came there out blood and water.

[35] And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth

that he saith true, that ye might believe.

[36] For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A

bone of him shall not be broken.

[37] And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they

pierced.



Mark 15:42-47



The Burial of Jesus

Mt 27:57-61; Lk 23:50-56; Jn 19:38-42



42 When the evening had come, because it was the Day of Preparation,

that is, the day before the Sabbath,

43 (Lk 2:25; 2:38) Joseph of Arimathea, an honorable member of the Council,

who also waited for the kingdom of God, came and went in boldly to Pilate,

and requested the body of Jesus.

44 Pilate wondered if He were already dead. And calling for the centurion,

he asked him whether He had been dead for a while.

45 When he learned about it from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

46 (Isa 22:16; 53:9) So he bought fine linen, and taking Him down,

wrapped Him in the linen and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn

out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.

47 (Mk 15:40; 16:1) Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw

where He was laid.



[42] And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that

is, the day before the sabbath,

[43] Joseph of Arimathaea, and honourable counseller, which also waited for

the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the

body of Jesus.

[44] And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the

centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.

[45] And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

[46] And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the

linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled

a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.

[47] And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was

laid.



Matthew 27:57-61



The Burial of Jesus

Mk 15:42-47; Lk 23:50-56; Jn 19:38-42



57 (Jn 19:38-42) When the evening came, there came a rich man of Arimathea,

named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus.

58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him.

59 When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

60 (Mt 27:66; 28:2) and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out of

the rock. And he rolled a large stone to the door of the tomb and departed.

The Burial of Jesus

38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus,

but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might

take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission.

So he came and took away His body.

39 (SS 4:14) Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night,

also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes,

weighing about seventy-five pounds.

(Gk. a hundred litrai or 34 kilograms.)

40 (Jn 11:44; Lk 24:12) Then they took the body of Jesus

and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices,

as is the burial custom of the Jews.

Matthew 27:62-66



The Guard at the Tomb



62 (Mk 15:42; Jn 19:14) The next day, following the Day of Preparation,

the chief priests and Pharisees gathered before Pilate,

63 (Mt 16:21; 17:23) saying, "Sir, we remember that deceiver saying

while He was still alive, 'After three days I will rise.'

64 (Mt 28:13) Therefore command that the tomb be made secure

until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away,

and tell the people, 'He has risen from the dead.'

The last deception will be worse than the first."

65 Pilate said to them, "You have a guard. Go your way.

Make it as secure as you can."

66 (Da 6:17) So they went and made the tomb secure

by sealing the stone and posting the guard.



[62] Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief

priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,

53 (Mt 26:57-68) They led Jesus away to the high priest. And all

the chief priests and the elders and the scribes were assembled with him.

54 (Jn 18:18; Mt 26:3) Peter followed Him at a distance into the courtyard

of the high priest. He sat with the guards and warmed himself by the fire.

55 Now the chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin requested testimony

against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none.

56 Many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.

57 (Mt 26:60-61) Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him,

saying,

58 (Mk 15:29; Jn 2:19) "We heard Him say, 'I will destroy this temple

that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another

not made with hands.' "

59 But still their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus,

"Do You answer nothing? What is it which these men testify against You?"

61 (Isa 53:7; Mt 16:16) But He kept silent and answered nothing.

Again the high priest asked Him, "Are You the Christ,

the Son of the Blessed One?"

63 (Nu 14:6) The high priest tore his robes, saying,

"What need do we have of any further witnesses?

They all condemned Him as guilty unto death.

59 The chief priests and the elders and the entire Sanhedrin searched

for false witness against Jesus to put Him to death,

60 (Dt 19:15; Ps 27:12) but they found none. Yes, though many false witnesses

came forward, they found none.

At last two false witnesses came forward

61 (Mt 27:40; Isa 49:7) and said, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy t

he temple of God and to build it in three days.' "

62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Him, "Do You answer nothing?

What is it these men testify against You?"

63 (Lev 5:1; Mt 16:16) But Jesus remained silent.

The high priest said to Him, "I adjure You by the living God,

tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God."

64 (Ps 110:1; Da 7:13) Jesus said to him, "You have said so. But I say to you,

hereafter you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power

and coming on the clouds of heaven."

65 (Mt 9:3; Jn 10:36) Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying,

"He has uttered blasphemy. What further need do we have for witnesses?

See, now you have heard His blasphemy.

66 (Jn 19:7) What do you think?"

They answered, "He is guilty unto death."

And others slapped Him with the palms of their hands,

what you are saying." Then he went out to the porch, and a rooster crowed.

69 The servant girl saw him again and began to say to those who stood by,

"This man is one of them."

70 (Ac 2:7) But again, he denied it.

A little while later, those who stood by said again to Peter,

"Surely, you are one of them.

For you are a Galilean, and your speech confirms it."

71 Peter began to invoke a curse on himself, and to swear,

"I do not know this Man of whom you speak."

72 (Mk 14:30; 14:68) And the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter called

to mind the word that Jesus said to him,

"Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times."

And when he thought on this, he wept.



[66] And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids

of the high priest:

[67] And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said,

And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.

[68] But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou

[69] And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This

is one of them.

[70] And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said

again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and

that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me

57 But he denied Him, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him."

58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them."

Peter said, "Man, I am not!"

59 About an hour later another man firmly declared,

"Certainly, this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean."

60 Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are saying."

Immediately, while he was yet speaking, the rooster crowed.

61 (Lk 22:34) The Lord turned and looked at Peter.

Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him,

"Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."

[61] And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the

word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt

The Mocking and Whipping of Jesus

and departed. And he went and hanged himself.

to put them into the treasury, because this is the price of blood."

He answered, "You truly say so."

and to the people, "I find no fault in this Man."

5 (Mk 1:14; Mt 4:23) But they insisted, saying, "He stirs up the people,

teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to here."



[1] And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.

[2] And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting

the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself

is Christ a King.

[3] And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he

answered him and said, Thou sayest it.

[4] Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault

in this man.

[5] And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people,

teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.



Jesus Before Herod



6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the Man was a Galilean.

7 (Lk 3:1; 13:31) When he learned that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction,

he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.

8 (Mt 14:1; Mk 6:14) When Herod saw Jesus, he greatly rejoiced,

for he had desired to see Him for a long time, because he had heard

many things of Him, and he was hoping to see some miracle performed by Him.

9 (Mt 27:14) He questioned Him with many words, but He gave no answer.

10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing Him.

11 (Mk 9:12) Then Herod with his soldiers despised Him, and mocked Him,

and dressed Him in a fine robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.

12 (Ac 4:27) On the same day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other,

having previously been at enmity with each other.



[6] When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.

John 18:28-40



Jesus Before Pilate

Mt 27:1-2, 11-14; Mk 15:1-5; Lk 23:1-5



28 (Jn 18:33; 19:9; Mt 27:27) Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas

to the Praetorium. It was early. Yet they themselves did not enter

the Praetorium, so that they might not be defiled,

but might eat the Passover.

29 Pilate then went out to them and said,

"What accusation do you bring against this Man?"

30 They answered him, "If He were not an evildoer,

we would not have handed Him over to you."

31 Then Pilate said, "Take Him and judge Him according to your law."

The Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,"

32 (Mt 20:19; 26:2) that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled

which He spoke, signifying what death He would die.

33 (Jn 19:9) Again Pilate entered the Praetorium, called Jesus,

and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?"

34 Jesus answered him, "Are you speaking of your own accord,

or did others tell you about Me?"

35 Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation

and the chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?"

36 (Jn 6:15; Da 2:44) Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world.

If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would fight,

that I would not be handed over to the Jews.

But now My kingdom is not from here."

37 (Jn 8:47; 1Jn 4:6) Therefore Pilate said to Him, "Then are You a king?"

Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king. For this reason

I was born, and for this reason I came into the world, to bear witness

to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."

38(Jn 19:4; Lk 23:4; Jn 19:6) Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?"

When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them,

"I find no guilt in Him at all.



[28] Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was

early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should

be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

[29] Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye

against this man?

[30] They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would

not have delivered him up unto thee.

[31] Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to

your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put

any man to death:

[32] That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying

what death he should die.

[33] Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and

said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

[34] Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others

tell it thee of me?

[35] Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests

have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

[36] Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of

this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to

the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

[37] Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered,

Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause

came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one

that is of the truth heareth my voice.

[38] Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he

went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at

all.



Jesus Sentenced to Die

39 (Mt 27:15-18) "But you have a custom, that I should release someone

to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you

the King of the Jews?"

40 They all shouted again, "Not this Man, but Barabbas!"

[39] But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the

passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

[40] Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now

Jesus Sentenced to Die

6 (Jn 18:39-40) Now at the feast he always released to them one prisoner,

whomever they requested.

7 There was one named Barabbas, who had committed murder

in the insurrection and was bound with the rebels.

8 The crowd began crying aloud, asking Pilate to do as he had always

done for them.

9 He answered them, "Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"

10 For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over out of envy.

11 (Ac 3:14) But the chief priests stirred the people,

so that he should instead release Barabbas to them.

12 Pilate answered them again, "What then would you have me do to Him

whom you call the King of the Jews?"

13 They again cried out, "Crucify Him!"

14 (Lk 23:41) Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has He done?"

But they cried out even more, "Crucify Him!"

15 (Mt 27:26; Jn 19:1) So Pilate, resolving to satisfy the people,

released Barabbas to them. And when he had scourged Jesus,

he handed Him over to be crucified.



[6] Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they

desired.

[7] And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had

made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.

[8] And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever

done unto them.

[9] But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the

King of the Jews?

[10] For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.

[11] But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release

Barabbas unto them.

[12] And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I

shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?

[13] And they cried out again, Crucify him.

[14] Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried

out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.

[15] And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto

them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

18 (Pr 27:4) For he knew that they had handed Him over out of envy.

19 (Mt 27:24; Lk 23:47) When he was sitting on the judgment seat,

his wife sent word to him, "Have nothing to do with that righteous Man,

for I have suffered much today in a dream on account of Him."

20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas

and kill Jesus.

21 The governor answered, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?"

They said, "Barabbas."

22 Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus

who is called Christ?"

They all said to him, "Let Him be crucified!"

23 The governor said, "Why, what evil has He done?"

But they cried out all the more, "Let Him be crucified!"

24 (Mt 27:4; Ps 26:6) When Pilate saw that he could not prevail,

but rather that unrest was beginning, he took water

and washed his hands before the crowd, saying,

"I am innocent of the blood of this righteous Man. See to it yourselves."

25 (Jos 2:19; Ac 5:28) Then all the people answered, "His blood be on us

and on our children!"

26 (Jn 19:1; Isa 53:5) Then he released Barabbas to them.

But when he had scourged Jesus, he handed Him over to be crucified.

Jesus Sentenced to Die

14 and said to them, "You have brought this Man to me as one who incites

the people. And truly, I, having examined Him before you, have found

15 No, neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, nothing worthy

of death has been done by Him.

16 (Mt 27:26; Mk 15:15) I will therefore chastise Him and release Him."

17 For he was obligated to release one man to them at the feast.

18 (Ac 3:14; 21:36) But they all cried out at once saying,

"Take this Man away and release Barabbas to us!"

19 (Ac 3:14) This man had been thrown in prison for an insurrection

in the city and for murder.

20 Therefore Pilate spoke to them again, desiring to release Jesus.

21 But they cried out, "Crucify Him! Crucify Him!"

22 (Lk 23:14; 23:16) He said to them a third time, "Why, what evil has

He done? I have found in Him no cause worthy of death.

I will therefore chastise Him and release Him."

23 But they insisted with loud voices, asking that He be crucified.

And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed.

24 (Ex 23:2) So Pilate gave the sentence as they demanded.

25 He released to them the man who was thrown in prison for insurrection

and murder, whom they asked for. But he sentenced Jesus according

to their will.



[13] And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the

rulers and the people,

[14] Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that

perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have

found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:

[15] No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of

death is done unto him.

[16] I will therefore chastise him, and release him.

[17] (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)

[18] And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release

unto us Barabbas:

[19] (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast

into prison.)

[20] Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.

[21] But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

[22] And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I

have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let

him go.

[23] And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be

crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.

[24] And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.

[25] And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast

into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.



John 19:1-16



John 19



1 (Isa 50:6; 53:5) Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged Him.

2 The soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head,

and they put a purple robe on Him.

3 (Mt 27:29) They said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they hit Him

with their hands.

4 (Jn 18:38; 19:6) Again Pilate went out and said to them,

"Look, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that

I find no guilt in Him."

5 (Jn 19:2) Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns

and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Here is the Man!"

6 (Jn 18:31; 19:4) When the chief priests and officers saw Him,

they cried out, "Crucify Him! Crucify Him!"

Pilate said to them, "Take Him yourselves and crucify Him,

for I find no guilt in Him."

7 (Jn 5:18; Lev 24:16; Mt 26:63-66) The Jews answered him,

"We have a law, and by our law He ought to die,

because He made Himself the Son of God!"

8 When Pilate heard these words, he was more afraid,

9 (Jn 18:33) and entered the Praetorium again, and said to Jesus,

"Where are You from?" But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Pilate said to Him, "Are You not speaking to me?

Do You not know that I have power to release You, and power to crucify You?"

11 (Ro 13:1; Mt 27:2) Jesus answered, "You would have no power at all over Me,

unless it were given to you from above.

Therefore he who handed Me over to you has the greater sin."

12 (Jn 18:33-36) From then on, Pilate tried to release Him.

But the Jews cried out, "If you release this Man, you are not Caesar's friend.

Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar!"

13 (Mt 27:19) When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out

and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement

(which in Hebrew is Gabbatha).

14 (Mt 27:62; Mk 15:25) It was the Day of Preparation of the Passover

and about the sixth hour.

He said to the Jews, "Here is your King!"

15 (Lk 23:18; Ac 21:36) But they shouted,

"Away with Him! Away with Him! Crucify Him!"

Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?"

The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar!"

16 Then he handed Him over to them to be crucified.

[2] And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and

they put on him a purple robe,

[3] And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

[5] Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe.

And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

[6] When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out,

saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and

crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

[7] The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die,

because he made himself the Son of God.

[8] When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

16 (Jn 18:28; 19:9) The soldiers led Him away to Praetorium Hall,

and they called together the entire battalion.

17 (Lk 23:11) They clothed Him with a purple robe. And they wove a crown

of thorns and put it on His head,

18 and began to salute Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

19 (Mk 14:65) They struck His head with a staff and spit on Him.

And bowing their knees, they worshipped Him.

20 When they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off of Him

and put His own garments on Him. Then they led Him out to crucify Him.



[16] And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and

they call together the whole band.

[17] And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and

put it about his head,

[18] And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

27 (Jn 18:28; 18:33) Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into

the Praetorium, and gathered the whole detachment of soldiers before Him.

28 (Mk 15:17; Lk 23:11) They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him,

29 (Isa 53:3; Mt 20:19) and when they wove a crown of thorns, they put it

on His head and put a staff in His right hand. They knelt before Him a

nd mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

30 (Mt 26:67; Mk 15:19) They spit on Him, and took the staff

and hit Him on the head.

31 (Isa 53:7) After they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him,

put His own garments on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.



[27] Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and

gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.

[28] And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.

[29] And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head,

and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked

The Eastern Tribes Return Home



1 Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites,

and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

2 (Jos 1:12-18) He said to them, "You have done everything that Moses

the servant of the Lord commanded you and have obeyed me in everything

that I have commanded you.

3 You have not left your brothers these many days down to this day,

and you have observed the obligations

of the commandment of the Lord your God.

4 (Jos 13:8) Now the Lord your God has given rest to your brothers,

as He had said to them. So now, turn and go to your homes,

to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord

gave you on the other side of the Jordan.

5 (Dt 6:17; 11:22) Only carefully obey the commandment

and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you:

to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to obey

His commandments, to cling to Him, and to serve Him

with all your heart and soul."

6 (Jos 14:13; Ge 47:7) Joshua blessed them and sent them off,

and they went to their tents.

7 (Jos 17:1-12) Moses had assigned land in Bashan

to half the tribe of Manasseh, and to the other half Joshua

assigned land among their brothers on the west side of the Jordan.

When Joshua sent them also to their homes and blessed them,

8 (Nu 31:27; 1Sa 30:24) he said, "Return home with great wealth,

much livestock, silver, gold, copper, iron, and great quantities of clothing.

Divide the spoil of your enemies among your brothers."

9 (Nu 32:26; 32:29) So the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh

left the children of Israel at Shiloh in the land of Canaan to go

to the land of Gilead, the land of their possession, according to the word

of the Lord through Moses.

10 The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh came

near the Jordan in the land of Canaan and built a very large altar

by the Jordan.

11 (Dt 13:12-14) The children of Israel heard someone say,

"The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh

have built an altar by the land of Canaan by the Jordan

on the Israelite side."

12 When the children of Israel heard this, they assembled

the whole congregation of the children of Israel at Shiloh

to go up against them in war.

13 (Nu 25:7; Ex 6:25) Then the children of Israel sent Phinehas,

son of Eleazar the priest, to the sons of Reuben, to the sons of Gad,

and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead,

14 (Nu 1:4) and with him ten chiefs, one chief each for each father's

household of every tribe of Israel; and each one of them was the head

of his father's house among the thousands of Israel.

15 They came to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh

in the land of Gilead and said to them,

16 "The whole congregation of the Lord says,

'What is this trespass you have committed against the God of Israel?

Today you have turned from following the Lord

by building yourselves an altar to rebel against Him!

17 Is the sin of Peor, from which we have still not purified

ourselves even today, not enough for us, which brought a plague upon

the congregation of the Lord

18 (Nu 16:22; Jos 22:16) that today you have turned away

from following the Lord?

" 'If today you are rebelling against the Lord, then tomorrow

He will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel!

19 (Jos 18:1) If indeed your own land is unclean, then cross over

to the land of the Lord where the tabernacle of the Lord stands

and take land among us. Yet do not rebel against the Lord or rebel

against us by building an altar other than the altar of the Lord our God.

20 (Jos 7:1; 7:5) Did not Achan son of Zerah commit a trespass in the things

under the ban, and wrath fall on all the congregation of Israel?

And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.' "

21 Then the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered

and said to the heads of the Israelite clans,

22 (Dt 10:17; 1Ki 8:39) "The Lord God of gods, the Lord God of gods,

He knows, and may Israel know-if we have acted in rebellion

or disloyalty against the Lord, do not spare us today.

23 (Dt 18:19; 1Sa 20:16) If we have built an altar to turn away

from following the Lord, to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings

or make peace offerings upon it, may the Lord Himself demand an account.

24 (Jos 4:6) "We did this deed because we were worried that in the future

your descendants might say, 'What have you to do with the Lord God of Israel?

25 The Lord made the Jordan a boundary between us and you,

the descendants of Reuben and Gad. You have no share in the Lord!'

In this way your descendants might make our descendants

to stop worshipping the Lord.

26 "So we said to each other, 'Let us build this altar, not for burnt

offering or sacrifice,

27 (Jos 24:27; Ge 31:48) but as a witness for us, for you,

and for the generations after us, that we may perform

the service of the Lord before Him with our burnt offerings,

sacrifices, and peace offerings, and in the future your descendants

will not be able to say to our descendants,

"You have no share in the Lord!" '

28 "Therefore we said, 'In the future, if they say this to us or to our

descendants, we will say, "Look at the replica of the altar of the Lord

that our fathers made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices,

but as a witness between you and us." '

29 (Dt 12:13-14; Jos 24:16) "God forbid that we should rebel against

the Lord by turning from following the Lord today by building

an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, and sacrifices

other than the altar of the Lord God that stands before His tabernacle!"

30 (Jos 22:33) When Phinehas the priest, the leaders of the congregation,

and the heads of the Israelite clans who were with him heard

what the descendants of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh said, it pleased them.

31 (Lev 26:11-12; 2Ch 15:2) Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest said

to the descendants of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, "Today we know

that the Lord is in our midst because you did not violate your obligations

to the Lord in this matter. Indeed, you have delivered the children of Israel

from the judgment of the Lord."

32 Then Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest and the leaders returned

from meeting the descendants of Reuben and Gad in the land of Gilead

to the children of Israel in the land of Canaan. They brought back a report.

33 (1Ch 29:20; Da 2:19) This report was good in the eyes of the children

of Israel, and the children of Israel blessed God.

They decided not to make war against the descendants

of Reuben and Gad to ruin the land in which they lived.

34 (Jos 22:27) The descendants of Reuben and Gad named the altar Witness,

"For it is a witness between us that the Lord is God."



Joshua 22

[1] Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe

of Manasseh,

[2] And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD

commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:

[3] Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have

kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.

[4] And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he

promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and

unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave

you on the other side Jordan.

[5] But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses

the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk

in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and

to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

[6] So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away: and they went unto their

tents.

[7] Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession

in Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren

on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their

tents, then he blessed them,

[8] And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents,

and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and

with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with

your brethren.

[9] And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of

Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh,

which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the

land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the word

of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

[10] And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of

Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of

Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.

[11] And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben

and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar

over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of

the children of Israel.

[12] And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of

the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up to

war against them.

[13] And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the

children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead,

Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,

[14] And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all

the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers

among the thousands of Israel.

[15] And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad,

and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake

with them, saying,

[16] Thus saith the whole congregation of the LORD, What trespass is this

that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from

following the LORD, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might

rebel this day against the LORD?

[17] Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we are not

cleansed until this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of

the LORD,

[18] But that ye must turn away this day from following the LORD? and it

will be, seeing ye rebel to day against the LORD, that to morrow he will be

wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.

[19] Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass

ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD's

tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against the

LORD, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the

LORD our God.

[20] Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing,

and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not

alone in his iniquity.

[21] Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe

of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,

[22] The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he

shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD,

(save us not this day,)

[23] That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if

to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace

offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require it;

[24] And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In

time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have

ye to do with the LORD God of Israel?

[25] For the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children

of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the LORD: so shall your

children make our children cease from fearing the LORD.

[26] Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for

burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:

[27] But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations

after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt

offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your

children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the

LORD.

[28] Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or

to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the

pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt

offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.

[29] God forbid that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn this day

from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat

offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is

before his tabernacle.

[30] And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and

heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that

the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh

spake, it pleased them.

[31] And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of

Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This

day we perceive that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed

this trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel

out of the hand of the LORD.

[32] And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned

from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land

of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought

them word again.

[33] And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of

Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to

destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.

[34] And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed:

for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is God.



JOSHUA 23



Joshua's Charge to the Leaders



1 (Jos 13:1; 21:44) A long time later, after the Lord had given Israel rest

from all their enemies around them, Joshua was old and advanced in years.

2 (Jos 24:1; Dt 31:28) Joshua called for all Israel, their elders,

clan heads, judges, and officials, and said to them,

"I am old and advanced in years.

3 (Ex 14:14; Jos 10:14) You have seen all that the Lord your God did to

all these peoples before you, for it is the Lord your God who has waged

war for you.

4 (Jos 13:2; 13:6-7) See, I have allotted to you as an inheritance the land

of these peoples who remain, along with the land of the peoples

whom I defeated, from the Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.

5 (Ex 33:2; 34:11) The Lord your God will drive them out and dispossess

them from before you, and you will inherit their land,

as the Lord your God told you.

6 (Dt 5:32; 28:14) "Now be very strong to observe and enact all that is

written in the Book of the Law of Moses, so that you do not deviate

from it to the right or the left.

7 (Ex 23:13; Ps 16:4) Do not assimilate with these peoples remaining

among you. Do not invoke the names of their gods, nor swear by, serve,

or worship them.

8 (Dt 10:20; 11:22) Instead, cling to the Lord your God, as you have done

until today.

9 (Dt 11:23; Jos 1:5) "For the Lord has dispossessed before you great

and mighty peoples, and as for you, not a single man has been able

to stand against you until today.

10 (Lev 26:8; Dt 3:22) One man from among you can make a thousand flee,

for it is the Lord your God who wages war for you, as He told you.

11 (Jos 22:5) Now be careful, therefore, to love the Lord your God!

12 (Dt 7:3) "For if you should turn and cling to the remainder

of these peoples who are left with you, and you intermarry

and assimilate with them, and they with you,

13 (Dt 7:16; Ex 23:33; Nu 33:55) know for certain that the Lord your God

will no longer drive out these nations from before you. But they shall

be snares and traps to you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes,

until you perish from off this good ground that the Lord your

God has given you.

14 (1Ki 2:2) "Now, I am going the way of all the earth. You know

in all your hearts and souls that not a single word has failed out

of all the good things that the Lord your God has said concerning

you. All came true for you. Not a single word among them failed.

15 (Dt 28:15-68) So just as every good thing that the Lord your God

said to you came to be, even so the Lord can bring every bad thing

upon you until He has destroyed you from this good land that

the Lord your God gave you.

16 If you break the covenant of the Lord your God that He commanded you,

and go and serve other gods and worship them, the anger of the Lord

will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from

the good land that He gave you."



Joshua 23

[1] And it came to pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto

Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and

stricken in age.

[2] And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their

heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I

am old and stricken in age:

[3] And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto all these

nations because of you; for the LORD your God is he that hath fought for

you.

[4] Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be

an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I

have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.

[5] And the LORD your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive

them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD

your God hath promised unto you.

[6] Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in

the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right

hand or to the left;

[7] That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you;

neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them,

neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:

[8] But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.

[9] For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong:

but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.

[10] One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is

that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.

[11] Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your

God.

[12] Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these

nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with

them, and go in unto them, and they to you:

[13] Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any

of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto

you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish

from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.

[14] And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know

in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of

all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are

come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.

[15] Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon

you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you

all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which

the LORD your God hath given you.

[16] When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he

commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to

them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall

perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.



JOSHUA 24



Covenant Renewed at Shechem



1 (Jos 23:2; 1Sa 10:19) Joshua called for all the Israelite tribes

at Shechem and summoned the elders, clan heads, judges,

and officials of Israel. They presented themselves before God.

2 (Ge 31:53; 31:30) Joshua said to all the people, "Thus says the Lord

God of Israel: Long ago your fathers-Terah father of Abraham and Nahor

-lived beyond the Euphrates (Euphrates River). and served other gods.

3 (Ge 12:1-4; 21:2-3) I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates,

(Euphrates River). brought him through all the land of Canaan,

and gave him many descendants. To him I gave Isaac.

4 (Dt 2:5; Ge 36:8) To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau,

and to Esau I gave Mount Seir for his inheritance,

but Jacob and his descendants went down into Egypt.

5 (Ex 3:10; 7:1-12) "I sent Moses and Aaron, I struck Egypt down

with all I did in their midst, and afterward I brought you out.

6 I brought your fathers out of Egypt, then you came to the sea.

The Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea.

7 (Ex 14:20; 14:10) Your fathers cried out to the Lord, and He placed darkness

between you and the Egyptians. He made the sea come upon them and cover them.

Your own eyes saw what I did to Egypt, and you lived in the wilderness

a long time.

8 (Nu 21:21-35) "I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived

on the other side of the Jordan. They waged war against you,

but I gave them into your hand so that you might inherit their land,

and I destroyed them before you.

9 (Jdg 11:25) Then Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and waged

war against Israel. He called for Balaam son of Beor to curse you,

10 but I refused to listen to Balaam. Therefore he blessed you still,

and I delivered you out of his hand.

11 (Jos 3:14-17; 4:10-12) "You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho.

The leaders of Jericho, along with the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites,

Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites, waged war against you,

but I gave them into your hand.

12 (Ex 23:28; Dt 7:20) I sent the hornet and drove out the two Amorite kings

from before you, but not with your sword or your bow.

13 (Jos 11:13'0 I gave you a land for which you did not work,

and cities that you did not build. You live in them, and you are eating

from the produce of vineyards and olive groves you did not plant.

14 (Jos 24:23; Dt 10:12; 1Sa 12:24) "Now fear the Lord, and serve Him

with sincerity and faithfulness. Put away the gods your fathers

served beyond the River (Euphrates River.) and in Egypt. Serve the Lord.

15 (Jdg 6:10; 1Ki 18:21) If it is displeasing to you to serve the Lord,

then choose today whom you will serve, if it should be the gods

your fathers served beyond the River (Euphrates River.)

or the gods of the Amorites' land where you are now living.

Yet as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

16 The people answered and said, "God forbid that we forsake

the Lord and serve other gods!

17 For it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers out from slavery

in the land of Egypt and performed these great signs in our sight and guarded

us all the way that we went and among all the peoples through whom we passed.

18 The Lord drove out before us all the people, even the Amorites,

who lived in the land. So we will indeed serve the Lord, for He is our God."

19 (Ex 20:5; 23:21) Then Joshua said to the people, "You are not able to serve

the Lord, for He is a holy God. He is a jealous God, and He will not forgive

your transgressions nor your sins.

20 (1Ch 28:9; Ac 7:42) If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods,

then He will turn, bring disaster upon you, and finish you off,

after having been good to you."

21 The people said to Joshua, "No, we will serve the Lord!"

22 (Ps 119:173) Joshua said to the people, "You are witnesses a

gainst yourselves, that you have chosen the Lord, to serve Him."

Then they said, "We are witnesses."

23 (Jos 24:14) "Now then," he said, "put away the foreign gods

in your midst, and stretch out your hearts to the Lord God of Israel!"

24 The people said to Joshua, "It is the Lord our God we will serve,

and His voice that we will obey."

25 (Ex 15:25; 2Ki 11:17) So that day Joshua made a covenant

for the people and established regulations and laws for them at Shechem.

26 (Jdg 9:6; Ge 35:4) Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God.

He took a large stone and set it up

under the oak by the sanctuary of the Lord.

27 (Jos 22:34; Dt 31:19) Joshua said to all the people, "See, this stone

will be a witness for us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord

that He spoke to us. It will be a witness for us, lest you deny your God."

28 (Jdg 2:6) Then Joshua sent the people away, each man to his inheritance.



Joshua 24

[16] And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the

LORD, to serve other gods;

[17] For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out

of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great

signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and

among all the people through whom we passed:

[18] And the LORD drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites

which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is

our God.

[19] And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an

holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor

your sins.

[20] If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and

do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.

[21] And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the LORD.

[22] And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves

that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are

witnesses.

[23] Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you,

and incline your heart unto the LORD God of Israel.

[24] And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and

his voice will we obey.

[25] So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a

statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

[26] And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a

great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of

the LORD.

[27] And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a

witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake

unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.

[28] So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.



Joshua's Death and Burial



29 (Jdg 2:8) After these events took place, Joshua son of Nun,

the servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred and ten.

30 (Jos 19:50) They buried him in the territory of his inheritance

in Timnath Serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim

north of Mount Gaash.

31 (Jdg 2:7; Dt 11:2) Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua

and of the elders who outlived Joshua and had known

all the deeds that the Lord had done for Israel.

32 (Ge 33:19; 50:25) They buried the bones of Joseph, which the children

of Israel had brought out of Egypt, in Shechem in the part of the field

that Jacob bought from the descendants of Hamor the father of Shechem

for one hundred pieces of silver.Heb. a hundred kesitahs;

a kesitah was a coin of unknown weight and value.

It became an inheritance of the descendants of Joseph.

33 (Ex 6:25; Jos 22:13) Eleazar son of Aaron died, and they buried him

at Gibeah, the town of Phinehas his son,

which was in the hill country of Ephraim.



[29] And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the

servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.

[30] And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-serah,

which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.

[31] And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of

the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the

LORD, that he had done for Israel.

[32] And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of

Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of

the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and

it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.

[33] And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in a hill that

pertained to Phinehas his son, which was given him in mount Ephraim.

that he was come from God, and went to God;

[5] After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the

disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

In a tradition starting as early as the thirteenth century, members of the

royal family in the United Kingdom give gifts to people in need on Maundy

Thursday, the day before Good Friday. The practice is rooted in the meaning

of the word maundy, which comes from the Latin mandatum, "command."

The command being commemorated is the new one that Jesus gave to His friends

on the night before He died:

"Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another"

(John 13:34).



Jesus was a leader who took on the role of a servant as He washed His friends'

feet (v. 5). He then called them to do the same: "I have set you an example

that you should do as I have done for you" (v. 15). And in an even greater

act of sacrifice, He lay down His life, dying on the cross (19:30).

Out of mercy and love, He gave Himself that we might enjoy the fullness of life.



The tradition of the British royal family serving people in need continues as

a symbol of following Jesus' great example. We may not have been born into a

place of privilege, but when we place our faith in Jesus, we become members

of His family. And we too can show our love by living out His new command.

As we depend on God's Spirit to change us from within, we can reach out

to others with care, affirmation, and grace.

"If God already knows everything about me, everything I've done,

then why do I need to confess it?" Grant struggled with a common

dilemma for many Christians. Indeed, God, knew all his sin - much

better than Grant did himself. But Grant needed to confess,

not for God's benefit, but for his own. Grant needed to agree with God

that his sin was wrong, and put himself in a position to receive God's

grace in forgiveness.

1 John 1:9 make the process quit clear. We confess,

and God forgives and cleanses. Many of us, however, want to take on

God's part as well. We confess, agreeing with God that our sin is wrong.

But then we proceed to try to 'clean up our act,'bargaining with God,

promising that if he will forgive us just this once,

we won't ever to it again.

The problem is, we can never keep such a promise.

We probably will do it again, and then we are back where we started,

begging for forgiveness, and trying once more to cleanse

ourselves for our unrighteousness.

God offers freedom from such futile performance. He says, "Just confess.

Agree that you sinned. Submit yourself to me. Then I'll take over from there."

God's grace does not give us freedom to keep on sinning, of course - we need

to cooperate with the work of his Spirit in our lives and do all we can

to avoid sin. But we do not have to beg God for forgiveness - forgiveness

is offered to us freely.

We do not have to clean up out act before God will accept us; God can make

the necessary changes in our lives. When we confess, submit ourselves to God,

and allow him to work within us, he is able both to forgive us and to cleanse

us from unrighteousness.

Saskatoon has seen quick growth in its Muslim population over the past

5 years, which maybe as high as 5000 today. Islamic leaders have

focused specifically on this city , having twice already sent cohorts

of about 70 families to start mosques. There are now 7 Islamic centres

of worship and an Islamic madrassah (school) located right next to a

Christian school.

Of particular concern recently is the number of young adults who grew up

in evangelical churches and converted to Islam. Most of these are young

women who were wooed by Muslim man and became emotionally bonded.

Both prior to and after marrying, these women are known to convert to Islam.



Agree in prayer with us for:

- entire congregations and individual believers to catch God's heart

and passion for reaching Muslims in Saskatoon and the other growing

Muslim population centres of Saskatchewan.

- for the eyes and understanding of Canadian youth to be opened to the

spiritual reality of Islam, and not deceived nor manipulated into

converting to a religion which cannot offer assurance of salvation.

- for the few workers among Muslims now engaged there, and for many more

to be raised up into effective witness.

- for prayer and training events that are starting in Saskatoon

to spread and grow to other cities.

At the bus station in Gorgan, the main town of Golestan, we take a taxi to

the settlement area. The taxi driver turns out to be Turkmen. He is very

hospitable and invites us to his home for Iftar - the evening meal for ending

the Ramadan fast. After breaking the fast, we talk about God and the meaning

of faith for Muslims and Christians. It is a conversation with high regard

for each other. It seems this family is meeting people who follow

the Messiah for the first time.



The Turkmen in northeastern Iran live mainly in the Golestan district,

east of the Caspian Sea. You will immediately recognize the Turkmen by their

colourful clothes and their distinct culture. Sadly, they have very few ties

with the Turkmen in next door Turkmenistan. The Turkmen learn Persian

at school, since their own language, Turkmen, is not taught. Therefore,

they can neither read nor write in their mother tongue,

and they often have trouble finding high-paying jobs.





There are no known disciples of Jesus among the approximately 1 million

Turkmen in this province. It is challenging to gain a foothold among them

as a Christian from another culture. To the outside eye, it may seem that

the Turkmen minority of Iran have gone unnoticed. But God sees them

and wants to build His kingdom among them.



How to Pray



Pray that God will speak to village leaders in visions and dreams.



Pray for good spiritual conversations between villagers

and Christ-followers who are passing through their towns.



Ask God that complete villages of people will come to faith in Jesus,

spreading the Good News from town to town,

from the mountain tops to the valleys below.

Washing the Disciples' Feet



1 (Jn 12:23; 16:28) Now before the Passover Feast, ­Jesus knew that His hour

had come to depart from this world to the Father.

Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him.

[12] So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was

set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?

Mark 14:17-26



17 (Lk 22:14) In the evening He came with the twelve.

"Truly I say to you, one of you who is eating with Me will betray Me."

"Take this and divide it among yourselves.

The Dispute About Greatness



24 (Mk 9:34; Lk 9:46) There was also rivalry among them concerning which

of them was to be counted the greatest.

25 (Mt 20:25-28) He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise

lordship over them, and those who exercise authority

over them are called benefactors.

26 (Lk 9:48) But you are not so. Instead, let him who is greatest among

you be as the younger, and he who rules as he who serves.

27 (Mt 20:28; Lk 12:37) For who is greater: he who sits at the table,

or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table?

But I am among you as He who serves.

28 (Heb 2:18; 4:15) You are those who have continued with Me in My trials.

29 (2Ti 2:12; Mt 25:34) And I appoint to you a kingdom as My Father

has appointed one to Me,

30 (Mt 19:28; Lk 14:15) so that you may eat and drink at My table

in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel."



[24] And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be

accounted the greatest.

Jesus Foretells His Betrayal

21 (Mt 26:21; Mk 14:18) When Jesus had said this, He was troubled in spirit,

and testified, "Truly, truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me."

22 (Lk 22:23; Mt 26:22) The disciples looked at one another,

uncertain of whom He spoke.

23 (Jn 19:26; 20:2; 21:7)Now there was leaning against Jesus' bosom

one of His disciples whom Jesus loved.

24 Therefore Simon Peter motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.

25 (Jn 21:20) Leaning back against Jesus' bosom, he said to Him,

"Lord, who is it?"

26 (Mt 26:23) Jesus answered, "It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread

when I have dipped it." When He had dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas

Iscariot, the son of Simon.

27 (Lk 22:3; Jn 13:2) After receiving the piece of bread, Satan entered him.

Then Jesus said to him, "What you are going to do, do quickly."

28 But no one at the table knew why He said this to him.

29 (Jn 12:5-6) Since Judas had the moneybox, some thought that Jesus said

to him, "Buy what we need for the feast," or that he should give something

to the poor.

30 Having received the piece of bread, he then left immediately.

And it was night.



[21] When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and

said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

[22] Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

[23] Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus

loved.

[24] Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should

be of whom he spake.

[25] He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?

[26] Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have

dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the

son of Simon.

[27] And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him,

That thou doest, do quickly.

[28] Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.

[29] For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had

said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or,

that he should give something to the poor.

[30] He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.



John 13:31-38



The New Commandment



31 (Jn 7:39; 14:13) When he had gone out, Jesus then said,

"Now is the Son of Man glorified, and in Him God is glorified.

32 (Jn 12:23; 17:1) If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him

in Himself and will immediately glorify Him.

33 (Jn 7:33-34; 1Jn 2:1) "Little children, yet a little while I am with you.

You will seek Me. And as I said to the Jews, so now I tell you,

'Where I am going, you cannot come.'

34 (Lev 19:18; Eph 5:2) "A new commandment I give to you,

that you love one another, even as I have loved you,

35 (Jn 17:21) By this all men will know that you are My disciples,

Peter's Denial Foretold

36 (2Pe 1:14; Jn 13:33) Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, where are You going?"

Jesus answered him, "Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now.

But you shall follow Me afterward."

37 Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You now?

I will lay down my life for Your sake."

38 (Mk 14:30) Jesus answered Him, "Will you lay down your life for My sake?

Truly, truly I say to you, the rooster shall not crow until you have denied Me

three times."



[31] Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world

be cast out.

[32] And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

[33] This he said, signifying what death he should die.

[34] The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ

abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who

is this Son of man?

[35] Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you.

Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that

walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

[36] While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children

of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from

[37] But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed

not on him:

[38] That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he

spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the

Lord been revealed?

may not fail. And when you have repented, strengthen your brothers."

with You to prison and to death."

Purse, Bag, and Sword

36 He said to them, "But now, let him who has a purse take it and also a bag.

And let him who has no sword sell his garment and buy one.

37 (Isa 53:12) For I tell you, what is written must yet be accomplished in Me,

'And He was numbered with the transgressors.'(Isa 53:12.)

Indeed, what is written concerning Me has a fulfillment."

38 They said, "Lord, look, here are two swords."

Jesus the Way to the Father



1 (Jn 12:44; 16:22-23) "Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God.

Believe also in Me.

2 (Jn 13:33; 13:36) In My Father's house are many dwelling places. If it were

not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you.

3 (Jn 12:26; 14:28) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again

and receive you to Myself, that where I am, you may be also.

4 You know where I am going, and you know the way."

5 (Jn 11:16) Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going.

How can we know the way?"

6 (Jn 10:9; 1:14; Ac 4:12) Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth,

and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

7 (Jn 8:19) If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.

From now on you do know Him and have seen Him."

8 Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father,

and that is sufficient for us."

9 (Heb 1:3; Jn 12:45; Col 1:15) Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you

such a long time, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen

Me has seen the Father. So how can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

10 (Jn 5:19; 10:38) Do you not believe that I am in the Father

and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak

on My own authority. But the Father who lives in Me does the works.

11 (Jn 5:36; 10:38) Believe Me that I am in the Father, and the Father

is in Me. Or else believe Me on account of the works themselves.

12 (Mt 21:21; Jn 14:28) Truly, truly I say to you, he who believes in Me

will do the works that I do also. And he will do greater works than these,

because I am going to My Father.

may be glorified in the Son.

that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do;

The Promise of the Spirit



15 (Eph 6:24) "If you love Me, keep My commandments.

16 (Jn 15:26; 14:26; 1Jn 2:1) I will pray the Father, and He will give you

another Counselor, that He may be with you forever:

17 (Jn 15:26; 16:13; 1Co 2:14) the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot

receive, for it does not see Him, neither does it know Him. But you know Him,

for He lives with you, and will be in you.

18 (Jn 14:3) I will not leave you fatherless. I will come to you.

19 (Jn 7:33; 16:16) Yet a little while and the world will see Me no more.

But you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also.

20 (Jn 10:38; 14:10) On that day you will know that I am in My Father,

and you are in Me, and I am in you.

21 (Jn 14:15; 16:27) He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one

who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father. And I will love

him and will reveal Myself to him."

22 (Lk 6:16; Ac 1:13) Then Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, "Lord, how is it

that You will reveal Yourself to us, but not to the world?"

23 (Jn 14:15; 14:21) Jesus answered him, "If a man loves Me, he will keep

My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make Our home

with him.

24 (Jn 7:16; 14:10) He who does not love Me does not keep My words.

The word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father's who sent Me.

25 "I have spoken these things to you while I am still with you.

26 (Jn 15:26; 16:7) But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father

will send in My name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that

I told you.

27 (Jn 16:33; Php 4:7; Col 3:15) Peace I leave with you.

My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.

Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

28 (Jn 14:12; 14:18) "You have heard Me say to you, 'I am going away

and am returning to you.' If you loved Me, you would rejoice

because I said, 'I am going to the Father,' for My Father is greater than I.

29 (Jn 13:19) Now I have told you before it happens so that, when it happens,

you may believe.

30 (Jn 12:31; 2Co 4:4; Heb 4:15) After this I will not speak much with you,

for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over Me.

John 15:1-17



Jesus the True Vine

1 (Isa 5:1-7; 1Co 3:9) "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.

2 (Mt 3:10; 13:12) Every branch in Me that bears no fruit, He takes away.

And every branch that bears fruit, He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

3 (Jn 13:10; 17:17) You are already clean through the word

which I have spoken to you.

4 (1Jn 2:6; Jn 6:56; Gal 2:20) Remain in Me, as I also remain in you.

As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine,

neither can you, unless you remain in Me.

The World's Hatred



18 (1Jn 3:13; Jn 7:7) "If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me

before it hated you.

19 (Jn 15:16) If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own.

But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world,

the world therefore hates you.

20 (Jn 13:16; Mt 10:24) Remember the word that I said to you: 'A servant

is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also

persecute you. If they kept My words, they will keep yours also.

21 (Mt 10:22; Jn 16:3) But all these things they will do to you for

My name's sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.

22 (Jn 9:41; Ro 1:20) If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not

have had sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin.

23 He who hates Me hates My Father also.

24 (Jn 5:36; 10:37) If I had not performed among them the works

John 16

1 (Mt 11:6) "I have spoken these things to you so that you will not fall away.

2 (Jn 9:22; Ac 26:9-11) They will put you out of the synagogues. Yes, the time

is coming that whoever kills you will think that he is offering

a service to God.

3 (Jn 15:21; 17:25) They will do these things to you, because they have not

known the Father nor Me.

The Work of the Spirit



"I did not tell you these things at the beginning, because I was with you.

asks Me, 'Where are You going?'

6 (Jn 14:1) Rather, sorrow has filled your heart because I have told you

these things.

7 (Jn 14:26; 15:26; 7:39) Nevertheless I tell you the truth:

It is expedient for you that I go away. For if I do not go away,

the Counselor will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.

8 (Jn 8:46) When He comes, He will convict the world of sin

and of righteousness and of judgment:

[7] Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go

away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I

depart, I will send him unto you.

[8] And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of

righteousness, and of judgment:

[9] Of sin, because they believe not on me;

[10] Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

[11] Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

[12] I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

[13] Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into

all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear,

that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

[14] He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it

unto you.

[15] All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he

shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.



Sorrow Will Turn Into Joy



16 (Jn 7:33; 16:17-19) "In a little while you will not see Me. And then after

a little while you will see Me, because I am going to the Father."

17 (Jn 16:5; Mk 9:10) Then some of His disciples said among themselves,

"What is this He is telling us: 'In a little while you will not see Me;

and then after a little while you will see Me,' and, 'because I am going

to the Father'?"

18 Then they said, "What is this He is telling us: 'In a little while'?

We do not know what He is saying."

19 (Jn 2:24-25; 16:30) Then Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him.

So He said to them, "Do you inquire among yourselves concerning what I said:

'In a little while you will not see Me;

and then after a little while you will see Me'?

20 (Mk 16:10; Mt 5:4) Truly, truly I say to you that you will weep and lament,

but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will

be turned into joy.

21 (1Th 5:3) When a woman is giving birth, she has pain, because her hour

has come. But as soon as she delivers the child, she no longer remembers

the anguish for joy that a child is born into the world.

22 (Jn 16:6; 1Pe 1:8) Therefore you now have sorrow. But I will see you

again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

23 (Jn 16:19; Mt 7:7) On that day you will ask Me nothing. Truly, truly I say

to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give it to you.

world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be

turned into joy.

[21] A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come:

but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the

anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

[22] And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your

heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

[23] And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto

you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

[24] Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive,

that your joy may be full.



I Have Overcome the World



25 (Jn 16:2) "I have told you these things in proverbs. But the time is coming

when I will no longer speak to you in proverbs, for I will speak to you

plainly about the Father.

26 On that day you will ask in My name. I am not saying to you that

I shall ask the Father on your behalf.

27 (Jn 14:21; 14:23) For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved

Me, and have believed that I came from God.

28 (Jn 13:3; 8:14) I came from the Father and have come into the world.

As I said, I am leaving the world and am going to the Father."

29 (Jn 16:25) His disciples said to Him, "Yes! Now You are speaking plainly

and with no figure of speech.

30 (Jn 21:17) Now we know that You know everything and do not need anyone

to question You. By this we believe that You came from God."

31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe?

32 (Mt 26:31; Jn 8:29) Listen, the hour is coming. Yes, it has now come that

you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave Me alone.

Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with Me.

33 (Jn 14:27; 1Jn 4:4; Jn 14:1) "I have told you these things so that in Me

you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But be of good

cheer. I have overcome the world."



[25] These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh,

will pray the Father for you:

[29] His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and

speakest no proverb.

[30] Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any

man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

[31] Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

[32] Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered,

every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone,

because the Father is with me.

[33] These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In

the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome

the world.



John 17



The Prayer of Jesus



1 (Jn 11:41; 7:39) When Jesus spoke these words, He lifted His eyes toward

heaven and said:

"Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son,

that Your Son may also glorify You.

2 (Jn 6:37; 6:39) As You have given Him authority over all flesh,

He will give eternal life to all whom You have given Him.

3 (1Jn 5:20; Jn 3:17; 17:25) This is eternal life: that they may know You,

the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.

4 (Jn 4:34; 19:30) I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work

You have given Me to do.

9 Simeon received a portion of the inheritance of Judah,

for the inheritance of Judah was too large for them,

so Simeon inherited land in the midst of the inheritance of Judah.



[1] And the second lot came forth to Simeon, even for the tribe of the

children of Simeon according to their families: and their inheritance was

within the inheritance of the children of Judah.

[2] And they had in their inheritance Beer-sheba, or Sheba, and Moladah,

[3] And Hazar-shual, and Balah, and Azem,

[4] And Eltolad, and Bethul, and Hormah,

[5] And Ziklag, and Beth-marcaboth, and Hazar-susah,

[6] And Beth-lebaoth, and Sharuhen; thirteen cities and their villages:

[7] Ain, Remmon, and Ether, and Ashan; four cities and their villages:

[8] And all the villages that were round about these cities to Baalath-beer,

Ramath of the south. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of

Simeon according to their families.

[9] Out of the portion of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the

children of Simeon: for the part of the children of Judah was too much for

them: therefore the children of Simeon had their inheritance within the

inheritance of them.



Allotment for Zebulun



10 The third lot came up for Zebulun according to their clans.

Their territory extended to Sarid,

11 (Jos 12:22) and their border ascended westward to Maralah,

reaching Dabbesheth and the valley east of Jokneam.

12 From Sarid the border turned east to the border of Kisloth Tabor,

out to Daberath, and up to Japhia.

13 From there it passes east to Gath Hepher and Eth Kazin.

It turns out to Rimmon and turns toward Neah.

14 The boundary turns north to Hannathon

and extends to the Valley of Iphtah El;

15 (Jos 11:1) and Kattath, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah,

and Bethlehem: twelve cities and their villages.

16 This was the inheritance of the tribe of Zebulun

according to their clans: these cities and their villages.



[10] And the third lot came up for the children of Zebulun according to

their families: and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid:

[11] And their border went up toward the sea, and Maralah, and reached to

Dabbasheth, and reached to the river that is before Jokneam;

[12] And turned from Sarid eastward toward the sunrising unto the border of

Chisloth-tabor, and then goeth out to daberath, and goeth up to Japhia,

[13] And from thence passeth on along on the east to Gittah-hepher, to

Ittah-kazin, and goeth out to Remmon-methoar to Neah;

[14] And the border compasseth it on the north side to Hannathon: and the

outgoings thereof are in the valley of Jiphthah-el:

[15] And Kattath, and Nahallal, and Shimron, and Idalah, and Bethlehem:

twelve cities with their villages.

[16] This is the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their

families, these cities with their villages.



Allotment for Issachar



17 The fourth lot came out for Issachar, for the tribe of Issachar

according to their clans.

18 (1Sa 28:4; 2Ki 4:8) Their territory included Jezreel, Kesulloth, Shunem,

19 Hapharaim, Shion, Anaharath,

20 Rabbith, Kishion, Ebez,

21 Remeth, En Gannim, En Haddah, and Beth Pazzez.

22 (Jdg 4:6) The border touches Tabor, Shahazumah, and Beth Shemesh,

then extends to the Jordan: sixteen cities and their villages.

23 This is the inheritance of the tribe of Issachar according

to their clans: the cities and their villages.



[17] And the fourth lot came out to Issachar, for the children of Issachar

according to their families.

[18] And their border was toward Jezreel, and Chesulloth, and Shunem,

[19] And Hapharaim, and Shion, and Anaharath,

[20] And Rabbith, and Kishion, and Abez,

[21] And Remeth, and En-gannim, and En-haddah, and Beth-pazzez;

[22] And the coast reacheth to Tabor, and Shahazimah, and Beth-shemesh; and

the outgoings of their border were at Jordan: sixteen cities with their

villages.

[23] This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar

according to their families, the cities and their villages.



Allotment for Asher



24 The fifth lot came out for the tribe of Asher according to their clans.

25 Their territory included Helkath, Hali, Beten, Akshaph,

26 (1Ki 18:20; 18:42) Allammelek, Amad, and Mishal. On the west their

border touches Carmel and Shihor Libnath.

27 (1Ki 9:13) Then it turns eastward, goes to Beth Dagon, and touches

Zebulun and the Valley of Iphtah El northward to Beth Emek and Neiel;

then it continues in the north to Kabul,

28 (Jdg 1:31; Jos 11:8) Abdon, Rehob, Hammon, Kanah, as far as Greater Sidon.

29 (Jdg 1:31; 2Sa 5:11) Then the border turned to Ramah, reaching

the fortified city of Tyre. Then the border turned to Hosah,

and ended at the Mediterranean Sea by the region of Akzib,

30 Ummah, Aphek, and Rehob: twenty-two cities and their villages.

31 This is the inheritance of the tribe of Asher according

to their clans: these cities and their villages.



[24] And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher

according to their families.

[25] And their border was Helkath, and Hali, and Beten, and Achshaph,

[26] And Alammelech, and Amad, and Misheal; and reacheth to Carmel westward,

and to Shihor-libnath;

[27] And turneth toward the sunrising to Beth-dagon, and reacheth to

Zebulun, and to the valley of Jiphthah-el toward the north side of

Beth-emek, and Neiel, and goeth out to Cabul on the left hand,

[28] And Hebron, and Rehob, and Hammon, and Kanah, even unto great Zidon;

[29] And then the coast turneth to Ramah, and to the strong city Tyre; and

the coast turneth to Hosah; and the outgoings thereof are at the sea from

the coast to Achzib:

[30] Ummah also, and Aphek, and Rehob: twenty and two cities with their

villages.

[31] This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according

to their families, these cities with their villages.



Allotment for Naphtali



32 The sixth lot came out for the tribe of Naphtali according to their clans.

33 (Jdg 4:11) Their border runs from Heleph, from the oak of Zaanannim,

to Adami Nekeb and Jabneel, as far as Lakkum, and extends to the Jordan.

34 (Dt 33:23) The border turns west to Aznoth Tabor, goes out from there

to Hukkok, and touches Zebulun on the south, Asher on the west, and Judah

at the Jordan on the east.

35 (Jos 11:2; Ge 10:18) Their fortified cities were Ziddim, Zer, Hammath,

Rakkath, Kinnereth,

36 (Jos 11:1) Adamah, Ramah, Hazor,

37 Kedesh, Edrei, En Hazor,

38 Iron, Migdal El, Horem, Beth Anath, and Beth Shemesh:

nineteen cities and their villages.

39 This is the inheritance of the tribe of Naphtali according

to their clans: the cities and their villages.



[32] The sixth lot came out to the children of Naphtali, even for the

children of Naphtali according to their families.

Allotment for Dan



40 The seventh lot came out for the tribe of Dan according to their clans.

41 The territory of their inheritance included Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir Shemesh,

42 (Jdg 1:35) Shaalabbin, Aijalon, Ithlah,

43 (Ge 38:12) Elon, Timnah, Ekron,

44 Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath,

45 (Jos 21:24) Jehud, Bene Berak, Gath Rimmon,

46 (Jnh 1:3) Me Jarkon, and Rakkon, along with the territory near Joppa.

47 (Jdg 1:34-35) Yet the tribe of Dan lost their territory, so they went up

to wage war against Leshem and captured it. They attacked it

with the edge of the sword, took possession of it, and settled there.

They called Leshem Dan after the name of Dan their father.

48 This is the inheritance of the tribe of Dan according to their clans:

these cities and their villages.



[40] And the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan

according to their families.

[41] And the coast of their inheritance was Zorah, and Eshtaol, and

Ir-shemesh,

[42] And Shaalabbin, and Ajalon, and Jethlah,

[43] And Elon, and Thimnathah, and Ekron,

[44] And Eltekeh, and Gibbethon, and Baalath,

[45] And Jehud, and Bene-berak, and Gath-rimmon,

[46] And Me-jarkon, and Rakkon, with the border before Japho.

[47] And the coast of the children of Dan went out too little for them:

therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it,

and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt

therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.

[48] This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according

to their families, these cities with their villages.



The Allotment for Joshua



49 When they had finished allotting the land according to its boundaries,

the children of Israel gave an inheritance among them to Joshua son of Nun.

50 (Jos 24:30; Jdg 2:9) According to the word of the Lord, they gave him

the city for which he asked: Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim.

He built up the city and lived in it.

51 (Jos 14:1; 18:10) These are the inheritances that Eleazar the priest,

Joshua son of Nun, and the family leaders of the Israelite tribes assigned

by lot in Shiloh before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

So they completed dividing the land.



[49] When they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their

coasts, the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun

among them:

[50] According to the word of the LORD they gave him the city which he

asked, even Timnath-serah in mount Ephraim: and he built the city, and dwelt

therein.

[51] These are the inheritances which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son

of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of

Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in Shiloh before the LORD, at the

door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing

the country.



JOSHUA 20



Cities of Refuge



Nu 35:9-34; Dt 4:41-43; 19:1-14



1 Then the Lord said to Joshua,

2 (Nu 35:6; Dt 4:41-43) "Say to the children of Israel,

'Choose refuge cities, as I told you through Moses,

3 so that anyone who kills a person without intent

and unknowingly may flee there. They shall be your refuge

from the avenger of blood.

4 (Jer 38:7; Ru 4:1-2) " 'The refugee can flee to one of these cities

then stand at the entrance of the city gate and tell his case

to the city elders. They will take him into the city

and give him a place to stay, and he will live with them.

5 (Nu 35:12) When the avenger of blood comes after him,

they shall not hand over the manslayer to him,

for he struck down his neighbor unintentionally

with no premeditated malice.

6 (Nu 35:12; 35:24-25) He shall live in that city

until he stands before the congregation for judgment,

until the death of the high priest serving at that time.

Then the manslayer may return to his home

and to his city from which he had fled.'"

7 (Jos 21:11; 21:32; 1Ch 6:76) They selected Kedesh in Galilee in the hill

country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim,

and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.

8 (Jos 21:36; 1Ch 6:78) Across the Jordan east of Jericho, theyselected

Bezer in the wilderness plain from the tribe of Reuben,

Ramoth in Gilead from thetribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan

from the tribe of Manasseh.

9 (Nu 35:15) These were the cities designated for all the children

of Israel and resident foreigners living among them,

to which anyone who killed someone inadvertently could flee

and not die at the hand of the avenger of blood

until he stood before the congregation.



Joshua 20

[1] The LORD also spake unto Joshua, saying,

[2] Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint out for you cities of

refuge, whereof I spake unto you by the hand of Moses:

[3] That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may

flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

[4] And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the

entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of

the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and

give him a place, that he may dwell among them.

[5] And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not

deliver the slayer up into his hand; because he smote his neighbour

unwittingly, and hated him not beforetime.

[6] And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation

for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those

days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his

own house, unto the city from whence he fled.

[7] And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in

mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah.

[8] And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in

the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in

Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of

Manasseh.

[9] These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for

the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person

at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of

blood, until he stood before the congregation.



JOSHUA 21



Cities for the Levites



(1Ch 6:54-80)



1 (Jos 14:1; 17:4) The family leaders of the Levites approached Eleazar

the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the family leaders of the Israelite tribes.

2 (Jos 18:1) At Shiloh in the land of Canaan they said to them,

"Through Moses the Lord commanded that we be given cities

in which to live and grazing lands for our livestock."

3 So according to the word of the Lord, out of their inheritance

the children of Israel gave the Levites these cities and their grazing lands.

4 The lot came out for the clans of the Kohathites,

so the Levites who were descendants of Aaron received an allotment

of thirteen cities from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.

5 (Jos 21:20-26) The remaining descendants of Kohath received an allotment

of ten cities from the clans of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan,

and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

6 (Jos 21:27-33) The descendants of Gershon received an allotment of thirteen

cities from the clans of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali,

and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.

7 (Jos 21:34-40) Descendants of Merari by their clans received an allotment

of twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.

8 (Jos 21:3) The children of Israel allotted the Levites these cities

and their grazing lands, as the Lord commanded through Moses.

9 From the tribes of Judah and Simeon they assigned

the following cities with these names.

10 (Jos 21:4) They were assigned to the descendants of Aaron,

to the clans of the Kohathites of the tribe of Levi,

for theirs was the first lot.

11 (1Ch 6:55; Lk 1:39) They assigned them Kiriath Arba

(Arba was the father of Anak), which is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah,

and the grazing lands around it.

12(Now they had assigned the city's fields and its surrounding villages

to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his property.)

13 (Jos 15:42; 10:29) So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they assigned

Hebron (a refuge city for people who committed manslaughter),

Libnah with its pastures,

14 (Jos 15:48; 15:50) Jattir, Eshtemoa,

15 (Jos 15:49; 15:51) Holon, Debir,

16 (Jos 15:10; 15:55) Ain, Juttah, and Beth Shemesh, together with the grazing

lands of each: nine cities from these two tribes.

17 (Jos 9:3; 18:24-25) From the tribe of Benjamin they assigned Gibeon, Geba,

18 Anathoth, and Almon, together with the grazing lands of each: four cities.

19 Altogether the descendants of Aaron received thirteen cities

and their grazing lands.

20 (1Ch 6:66) The rest of the Levites from the clans of the descendants

of Kohath received cities allotted from the tribe of Ephraim.

21 (Jos 20:7) They assigned them Shechem (a refuge city for people

who committed manslaughter) in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer,

22 Kibzaim, and Beth Horon, together with the grazing lands

of each: four cities.

23 From the tribe of Dan they assigned Eltekeh, Gibbethon,

24 Aijalon, and Gath Rimmon, together with the grazing lands

of each: four cities.

25 From the half-tribe of Manasseh they assigned Taanach and Gath Rimmon,

together with the grazing lands of each: two cities.

26 Altogether the rest of the clans of the descendants of Kohath

received ten cities and their grazing lands.

27 (1Ch 6:71) From the half-tribe of Manasseh they assigned

to the descendants of Gershon (one of the Levite clans):

Golan in Bashan (a refuge city for people who committed manslaughter)

and Be Eshterah, together with the grazing lands of each: two cities.

28 From the tribe of Issachar they assigned Kishion, Daberath,

29 Jarmuth, and En Gannim, together with the grazing lands

of each: four cities.

30 From the tribe of Asher they assigned Mishal, Abdon,

31 Helkath, and Rehob, together with the grazing lands of each: four cities.

32 (Jos 20:7; 1Ch 6:76) From the tribe of Naphtali they assigned Kedesh

in Galilee (a refuge city for people who committed manslaughter),

Hammoth Dor, and Kartan, together with the grazing lands

of each: three cities.

33 Altogether the Gershonites according to their clans received

thirteen cities and their grazing lands.

34 (1Ch 6:77) From the tribe of Zebulun they assigned to the descendants

of Merari (the remaining Levites): Jokneam, Kartah,

35 Dimnah, and Nahalal, together with the grazing lands of each: four cities.

36 (Jos 20:8; Dt 4:43) From the tribe of Reuben they assigned Bezer, Jahaz,

37 Kedemoth, and Mephaath, together with the grazing lands

of each: four cities.

38 (Ge 32:2) From the tribe of Gad they assigned Ramoth in Gilead

(a refuge city for people who committed manslaughter), Mahanaim,

39 Heshbon, and Jazer, together with the grazing lands

of each: four cities in all.

40 So twelve cities were allotted for the descendants of Merari

according to their clans (the remaining Levite clans).

41 Altogether the Levites received 48 cities and their grazing lands

within the possessions of the children of Israel.

42 Each of these cities had grazing lands surrounding them.

It was this way with all these cities.

43 (Ge 13:15; 28:4) The Lord gave Israel all the land that He swore

to give to their fathers. They took possession of it and lived in it.

44 (Jos 11:23) The Lord gave them rest all around, according to all

that He swore to their fathers. Not a man among their enemies stood

before them, and the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hands.

45 (Jos 23:14-15; 1Ki 8:56) Not a single word of all the good things

that the Lord had spoken to the children of Israel failed.

They all came to pass.



Joshua 21

[1] Then came near the heads of the fathers of the Levites unto Eleazar the

priest, and unto Joshua the son of Nun, and unto the heads of the fathers of

the tribes of the children of Israel;

[2] And they spake unto them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, The

LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the

suburbs thereof for our cattle.

[3] And the children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their

inheritance, at the commandment of the LORD, these cities and their suburbs.

[4] And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites: and the

children of Aaron the priest, which were of the Levites, had by lot out of

the tribe of Judah, and out of the tribe of Simeon, and out of the tribe of

Benjamin, thirteen cities.

[5] And the rest of the children of Kohath had by lot out of the families of

the tribe of Ephraim, and out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half tribe

of Manasseh, ten cities.

[6] And the children of Gershon had by lot out of the families of the tribe

of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of

Naphtali, and out of the half tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities.

[7] The children of Merari by their families had out of the tribe of Reuben,

and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.

[8] And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities

with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.

[9] And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the

tribe of the children of Simeon, these cities which are here mentioned by

name,

[10] Which the children of Aaron, being of the families of the Kohathites,

who were of the children of Levi, had: for theirs was the first lot.

[11] And they gave them the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is

Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about

it.

[12] But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to

Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.

[13] Thus they gave to the children of Aaron the priest Hebron with her

suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Libnah with her suburbs,

[14] And Jattir with her suburbs, and Eshtemoa with her suburbs,

[15] And Holon with her suburbs, and Debir with her suburbs,

of the children of Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot out of the

tribe of Ephraim.

[21] For they gave them Shechem with her suburbs in mount Ephraim, to be a

city of refuge for the slayer; and Gezer with her suburbs,

[22] And Kibzaim with her suburbs, and Beth-horon with her suburbs; four

cities.

[23] And out of the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh with her suburbs, Gibbethon with

her suburbs,

[25] And out of the half tribe of Manasseh, Tanach with her suburbs, and

children of Kohath that remained.

[27] And unto the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, out

of the other half tribe of Manasseh they gave Golan in Bashan with her

suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Beesh-terah with her

suburbs; two cities.

[28] And out of the tribe of Issachar, Kishon with her suburbs, Dabareh with

her suburbs,

[29] Jarmuth with her suburbs, En-gannim with her suburbs; four cities.

[30] And out of the tribe of Asher, Mishal with her suburbs, Abdon with her

suburbs,

[34] And unto the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the

[35] Dimnah with her suburbs, Nahalal with her suburbs; four cities.

[36] And out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer with her suburbs, and Jahazah

with her suburbs,

[37] Kedemoth with her suburbs, and Mephaath with her suburbs; four cities.

[38] And out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs, to be a

city of refuge for the slayer; and Mahanaim with her suburbs,

[39] Heshbon with her suburbs, Jazer with her suburbs; four cities in all.

[40] So all the cities for the children of Merari by their families, which

were remaining of the families of the Levites, were by their lot twelve

cities.

[41] All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of

Israel were forty and eight cities with their suburbs.

[42] These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them: thus

were all these cities.

[43] And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto

their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.

[44] And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware

unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before

them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.

[45] There failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto

the house of Israel; all came to pass.



1 Chron 6:54-81



54 (Ge 25:16) And these are their dwelling places according to their walled

settlements in their territory, for they were given to them, namely

to the sons of Aaron and to the families of the Kohathites, by lot.

55 (Jos 14:13) They gave them Hebron in the land of Judah,

and its surrounding outlands.

56 (Jos 15:13) But the open fields of the city, and its villages,

they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

The Cursing of the Fig Tree

if perhaps He might find anything on it. When He came to it,

He found nothing except leaves, for it was not the season for figs.

The Cleansing of the Temple

Mark 11:20



The Lesson From the Fig Tree

Mt 21:20-22



20 In the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered

from the roots.

Cindy was excited for her new job in a nonprofit company. What an opportunity

to make a difference! She soon discovered her coworkers didn't share her

enthusiasm. They mocked the company's mission and made excuses for their poor

performance as they looked elsewhere for more lucrative positions. Cindy

wished she'd never applied for this job. What looked great from afar

was disappointing up close.



This was Jesus' problem with the fig tree mentioned in today's story

(Mark 11:13). It was early in the season, yet the tree's leaves signaled it

might have early figs. Nope. The tree had sprouted leaves, but it hadn't yet

produced fruit. Disappointed, Jesus cursed the tree, "May no one ever eat

fruit from you again" (v. 14). By the next morning the tree had

entirely withered (v. 20).



Christ once fasted fourty days, so He knew how to go without food.

Cursing the fig tree was not about His appetite. It was an object lesson.

The tree represented Israel, which had the trappings of true religion

but had lost the point. They were about to kill their Messiah,

the Son of God. How more barren could they be?



We may look good from afar, but Jesus comes near, looking for fruit that

only His Spirit can produce. Our fruit need not be spectacular. But it must

be supernatural, such as love, joy, and peace in hard times (Galatians 5:22).

Relying on the Spirit, we can bear fruit even then for Jesus.

Marcy was afraid of the dark. As a child she slept with a nightlight on,

and even she matured, she still had a fear of dark places.

When she was at home alone, she kept all the lights on,

and a small lamp at her bedside glowed through the night.

The psalmist David reflects that common fear of darkness when he says

"The Lord is my light and my salvation - whom shall I fear?"

David does not say, "The Lord brings light," but "The Lord is my light".

God is the source of understanding and security in our lives.

He is the One who can expose and deal with our fears.

When we are afraid - afraid of losing a job or a loved one,

afraid of making mistakes, afraid of being hurt, afraid of what others may

say about us - we can turn to the Lord who can handle our fears.

He is a "stronghold", a fortress of protection around us,

and in him we are safe.

Often we turn to other places for our security - to the bank account,

to a spouse or loved one, to the approval of the world.

We mistakenly think that these sources can provide a foundation of defence

against uncertainty of life. But when we find that people disappoint us, money

loses its value, and the praise of others is fleeting,

we must turn again to the true source of security, God alone.

Saskatoon has seen quick growth in its Muslim population over the past

5 years, which maybe as high as 5000 today. Islamic leaders have

focused specifically on this city , having twice already sent cohorts

of about 70 families to start mosques. There are now 7 Islamic centres

of worship and an Islamic madrassah (school) located right next to a

Christian school.

Of particular concern recently is the number of young adults who grew up

in evangelical churches and converted to Islam. Most of these are young

women who were wooed by Muslim man and became emotionally bonded.

Both prior to and after marrying, these women are known to convert to Islam.



Agree in prayer with us for:

- entire congregations and individual believers to catch God's heart

and passion for reaching Muslims in Saskatoon and the other growing

Muslim population centres of Saskatchewan.

- for the eyes and understanding of Canadian youth to be opened to the

spiritual reality of Islam, and not deceived nor manipulated into

converting to a religion which cannot offer assurance of salvation.

- for the few workers among Muslims now engaged there, and for many more

to be raised up into effective witness.

- for prayer and training events that are starting in Saskatoon

to spread and grow to other cities.

The destructive earthquakes of early 2023 were traumatic for many people in

both Turkey and Syria. In Turkey, there were at least 50783 deaths

and 107204 injuries recorded. In Syria, there were over 8000 deaths

and over 5000 injuries. Adding to this tragedy, millions of Turks and Syrians

lost their homes, as hundreds of thousands of buildings, clinics,

and hospitals were destroyed.



The survivors are still suffering from the implications of the trauma they

experienced. Many have lost their hope for the future, in addition to homes

and loved ones. Particularly in Syria, where hardly any help arrived and

people in need were helpless in the face of massive destruction.



Yet even in this chaos, God has been working. Christians in Syria and Turkey

opened their hearts and offered refuge to the homeless survivors

in monasteries and churches. And stories of miraculous rescues spread far

and wide.



Sahin, the first follower of Christ in his family, was despised by his family

and friends because of his faith. But when he and his family lost their home

in the earthquake, Sahin's Christian friends helped to organize tents for him

and his relatives, friends, and neighbors. Their helpfulness impressed

Sahin's family and friends and opened their hearts to the message of Jesus.



How to Pray



Pray that those affected by the earthquake will receive the help

they need including new infrastructure and homes, and physical

and mental healing.



Pray for God to continue to pour out comfort, grace,

and care on victims in Turkey and Syria.



Pray that churches will be a testimony of love, mercy,

and goodness and that people will become open to the gospel

as a result of their love and testimony.





My paternal side is of Muslim heritage and will offer this section to further

call for Muslim converts to Christian and any other converts to Christianity

(Hindus, Jews, aboriginals Canadian, ...) .
