Deuteronomy 1



[26] Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the

commandment of the LORD your God:

[27] And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the LORD hated us, he

hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand

of the Amorites, to destroy us.

[28] Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart,

saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and

walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims

there.

[29] Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.

[30] The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you,

according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;

[31] And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God

bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye

came into this place.

[32] Yet in this thing ye did not believe the LORD your God,

[33] Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your

tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a

cloud by day.

[34] And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware,

saying,

[35] Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see

that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers,

[36] Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I

give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he

hath wholly followed the LORD.

[37] Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt

not go in thither.

[38] But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in

thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

[39] Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your

children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they

shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess

it.

[40] But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by

the way of the Red sea.

[41] Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the LORD, we

will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us.

And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go

up into the hill.

[42] And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for

I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.

[43] So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the

commandment of the LORD, and went presumptuously up into the hill.

[44] And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you,

and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.

[45] And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not

hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.

[46] So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode

there.



DEUTERONOMY 2



The Wilderness Years



1 (Nu 21:4; 14:25) Then we turned, and set out toward the wilderness

by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord spoke to me, and we circled

Mount Seir for many days.

2 Then the Lord spoke to me, saying,

3 (Dt 1:6) "You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north.

4 (Nu 20:14-21; Ex 15:15) Command the people, saying: You are to pass

through the territory of your brothers the children of Esau, who dwell

in Seir, and they shall be afraid of you. So carefully watch yourselves.

5 (Ge 36:8; Jos 24:4) Do not provoke them, for I will not give you any

of their land, no, not so much as a footprint, because I have given

Mount Seir to Esau for a possession.

6 You may buy food from them with money so that you may eat,

and you may also buy water from them with money so that you may drink.

7 (Dt 8:2-4; Job 23:10) "For the Lord your God has blessed you in all

the works of your hands. He knows your wanderings through this

great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you.

You have lacked nothing."

8 (1Ki 9:26; Jdg 11:18) So we passed by our brothers, the children of Esau,

who lived in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath and from

Ezion Geber, and we turned and passed by the way of the Wilderness of Moab.

9 (Ge 19:36-37; Nu 21:15) The Lord said to me, "Do not harass the Moabites,

nor contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land

for a possession, because I have given Ar

to the children of Lot as a possession."

10 (Ge 14:5) (The Emites lived there in times past, a people as great

and as many and as tall as the Anakites.

11 These people, as well as the Anakites, also were regarded as giants,

(About 14 feet long and 6 feet wide, or 4 meters long and 1.8 meters wide.)

but the Moabites call them Emites.

12 (Dt 2:22; Ge 14:6) The Horites also formerly lived in Seir,

but the children of Esau dispossessed and destroyed them,

and settled there in their place, just as Israel did to the land

of its possession, which the Lord gave to them.)

13 (Nu 21:12) "Cross over the Zered Valley." So we went over the Zered Valley.

14 (Dt 1:34-35; Nu 13:26) Now the length of time it took for us to come to

Kadesh Barnea until we crossed over the brook Zered was 38 years,

until all the generation of the men of war perished from among

the army, just as the Lord swore to them.

15 (Ps 106:26) For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them,

to destroy them from among their midst, until they were gone.

16 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were gone

and dead from among the people,

17 then the Lord spoke to me, saying,

18 "Today, you are to pass over through Ar, the border of Moab.

19 (Dt 2:9) When you come close to the Ammonites,

do not harass them or provoke them,

for I will not give you any of the land of the Ammonites

as a possession, because I have given it

to the children of Lot for a possession."

20 (Ge 14:5) (That also is considered the land of giants.

Giants formerly lived there, but the Ammonites

call them Zamzummites.

21 They were a great people, as numerous and tall as the Anakites.

But the Lord destroyed them before the Ammonites.

Then they dispossessed them and lived in their place,

22 (Ge 36:8; 14:6) just as He had done for the children

of Esau, who lived in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites

from before them, and they dispossessed them,

and lived in their place even to this day.

23 (Ge 10:14; Jos 13:3) And the Avvites, who lived in villages

as far as Gaza, the Caphtorites, who came out of Caphtor,

destroyed them, and lived in their place.)



[1] Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of

the Red sea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many

days.

[2] And the LORD spake unto me, saying,

[3] Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.

[4] And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of

your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be

afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:

[5] Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so

much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a

possession.

[6] Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also

buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.

[7] For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he

knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the

LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.

[8] And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which

dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from

Ezion-gaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

[9] And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend

with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a

possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a

[11] Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call

their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the LORD

gave unto them.

[13] Now rise up, said I, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over

the brook Zered.

[14] And the space in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come

over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation

of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware

unto them.

[15] For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from

among the host, until they were consumed.

[16] So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from

among the people,

[17] That the LORD spake unto me, saying,

[18] Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day:

[19] And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress

them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the

children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children

of Lot for a possession.

[20] (That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old

time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;

[21] A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD

destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their

stead:

[22] As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he

destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in

which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)



King Sihon Defeated



24 "Arise, set out, and cross the River Arnon.

See, I have given Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon,

and his land into your hand. Begin to possess it

and contend with him in battle.

25 (Ex 15:14-16; Dt 11:25) This day I will begin to put

the dread of you and the fear of you on the nations

that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear

the report of you, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of you."

26 (Jos 13:18) I sent messengers out of the Wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon,

king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying,

27 (Jdg 11:19) "Let me pass through your land. I will only go

on the main road. I will not turn aside to the right or the left.

28 (Nu 20:19) You shall sell me food for money so that I may eat,

and give me water for money so that I may drink,

only allow me to pass through on foot,

29 (Nu 20:18; Dt 23:3-4) just as the children of Esau who dwell in Seir

and the Moabites who dwell in Ar did for me, until I pass over

the Jordan into the land which the Lord our God is giving us."

30 (Ex 4:21; Nu 21:23) But Sihon, king of Heshbon,

would not let us pass by him, for the Lord your God hardened

his spirit and made his heart obstinate, so that He might deliver

him into your hand as he is to this day.

31 (Dt 1:8) The Lord said to me, "See, I have begun to give Sihon

and his land to you. Begin to possess it, so that you may inherit his land."

32 (Nu 21:23-30) Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people,

to fight at Jahaz.

33 (Dt 7:2) Then the Lord our God delivered him over to us, and we struck

him down with his sons and all his people.

34 (Dt 7:2; 3:6) We took all his cities at that time and utterly destroyed

the men, the women, and the children of every city. We left no survivors.

35 We took only the livestock for plunder

and the spoils of the cities which we took.

36 (Jos 13:9; Dt 3:12; 4:48) From Aroer, which is on the bank

of the River Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley,

all the way to Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us.

The Lord our God delivered all to us.

37 (Ge 32:22; Nu 21:24) Only you did not come near the land of the Ammonites,

nor to any place on the River Jabbok, nor to the cities in the hill country,

nor to any place the Lord our God had forbidden us.

The Command to Leave Horeb



1 (1Sa 25:1) These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel

on the other side of the Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain

opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel and Laban

and Hazeroth and Dizahab.

2 (Nu 13:26; 32:8) (It is an eleven-day journey from

Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea.)

3 (Nu 33:38) In the fortieth year, in the eleventh month,

on the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel,

according to all that the Lord had commanded him to give to them.

4 (Nu 21:21-35; Ne 9:22) It was after he had slain

Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon,

and Og the king of Bashan, who lived at Ashtaroth in Edrei.

5 Across the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to declare

this law, saying:

6 (Ex 3:1; Nu 10:11-13) The Lord our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying,

"You have dwelt long enough at this mountain.

7 (Dt 11:24; Jos 10:40) Turn, and take your journey, and go to the mountains

of the Amorites, and to all their neighbors, in the plain, in the mountains

and in the lowland, in the Negev and by the seacoast, to the land of the

Canaanites and to Lebanon, as far as the great river, the River Euphrates.

8 (Ge 12:7; 15:18) See, I have set the land before you. Go in and possess

the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac,

and Jacob, to give to them and to their descendants after them."

them and to their seed after them.



Leaders Appointed



9 (Ex 18:18) I spoke to you at that time, saying,

"I am not able to bear you by myself.

10 (Ge 15:5; Dt 10:22) The Lord your God has multiplied you, and surely

you are this day as numerous as the stars of heaven.

11 (Ge 22:17; Ex 32:13) May the Lord, the God of your fathers, make you

a thousand times more numerous and bless you, just as He has promised you!

12 How can I myself bear your load and your burden and your strife?

13 (Ex 18:21; Nu 11:16-17) Choose wise, discerning, and knowing men,

among your tribes, and I will appoint them as leaders over you."

14 You answered me, and said,

"The thing which you have said is good for us to do."

15 So I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and well-known men,

and appointed them as leaders over you, leaders over thousands,

and leaders over hundreds, and leaders over fifties,

and leaders over tens, and officers among your tribes.

16 (Jn 7:24; Lev 24:22) I charged your judges at that time, saying,

"Hear the issues between your countrymen, and judge righteously

between every man and his fellow countryman, and the foreigner

that is with him.

17 (Ex 18:26; Lev 19:15) You shall not show partiality in judgment,

but you shallhear the small as well as the great. You shall not be afraid

in any man's presence, for the judgment is God's. The case that is too

hard for you, you shall bring it to me, and I will hear it."

18 At that time, I commanded you all the things you should do.



[9] And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you

myself alone:

[10] The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as

the stars of heaven for multitude.

[11] (The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as

ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!)

[12] How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your

strife?

[13] Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and

I will make them rulers over you.

[14] And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good

for us to do.

[15] So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them

heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and

captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your

tribes.

[16] And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between

your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and

the stranger that is with him.

[17] Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small

as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the

judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me,

and I will hear it.

[18] And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.



Israel Sends Spies



19 (Dt 1:2; 8:15; Jer 2:6) When we departed from Horeb, we went through

all that great and terrible wilderness, which you saw by the way of the

mountain of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us,

and we came to Kadesh Barnea.

20 I said to you, "You have come to the mountains of the Amorites,

which the Lord our God is giving to us.

21 (Jos 1:9) See, the Lord your God has set the land before you.

Go up and possess it, just as the Lord, the God of your fathers,

spoke to you. Do not fear or be discouraged."

22 So all of you came near to me and said,

"Let us send men before us, so that they shall scout out the land,

and bring back to us word concerning what way we should go up

and into what cities we shall come."

23 The thing pleased me, and I took twelve men from you,

one out of each tribe.

24 (Nu 13:21-27) They turned and went up into the hill country

and came to the Valley of Eshkol and scouted it out.

25 They took the fruit of the land in their hands,

and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, and said,

"It is a good land which the Lord our God is giving us."



[19] And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and

terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the

Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.

[20] And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites,

which the LORD our God doth give unto us.

[21] Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and

possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not,

neither be discouraged.

[22] And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men

before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by

what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.

[23] And the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a

tribe:

[24] And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley

of Eshcol, and searched it out.

[25] And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it

down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which

the LORD our God doth give us.



Israel Rebels



26 (Nu 14:1-4) Yet you were not willing to go up,

but rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God.

27 (Dt 9:28; Nu 14:3) You murmured in your tents, and said,

"Because the Lord hates us, He has brought us out of the land

of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.

28 (Dt 9:1-2; Nu 13:28-33) Where shall we go up? Our brothers have

discouraged our hearts, saying, "The people are greater and taller than we.

The cities are great and walled up to heaven.

And moreover, we have seen the sons of the Anakites there.' "

29 Then I said to you, "Do not be terrified, or afraid of them.

30 (Ex 14:14; Ne 4:20) The Lord your God who goes before you,

He shall fight for you, just as all that He did for you

in Egypt before your eyes,

31 (Isa 46:3-4; 63:9) and in the wilderness, where you saw how

the Lord your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all

the way that you went, until you came to this place.-

32 (Ps 106:24; Jude 1:5) Yet in this thing you did not believe

the Lord your God,

33 (Nu 10:33; Ps 78:14) who went in the way before you,

to find you a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night

and in a cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go.

34 The Lord heard the sound of your words, and was angry, and vowed, saying,

35 "Not one of these men of this evil generation will see the good

land which I swore to give to your fathers.

36 (Nu 14:24) The exception will be Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

He shall see it, and to him I will give the land upon which he has walked,

and to his children, because he has wholly followed the Lord."

37 (Nu 20:12; Dt 4:21) Also the Lord was angry with me on your account,

saying, "You also shall not go in.

38 (Nu 14:30; Dt 3:28) But Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you,

he shall go in. Encourage him, for he will cause Israel to inherit it.

39 (Nu 14:3; Isa 7:15-16) Moreover, your little ones, who you said would

be a prey, and your children, who in that day had no knowledge

41 Then you answered and said to me,

"We have sinned against the Lord. We will go up and fight,

just as the Lord our God commanded us."

So each of you girded on his weapons of war and you thought

it easy to go up into the hill country.

42 Then the Lord said to me, "Tell them,

'Do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you;

lest you be defeated before your enemies.' "

43 (Nu 14:44) So I spoke to you, but you would not listen. Instead,

you rebelled against the commandment of the Lord

and went presumptuously up into the hill country.

44 (Ps 118:12; Nu 14:45) The Amorites, who lived in the hill country,

came out against you, and chased you as bees do,

and destroyed you in Seir as far as Hormah.

45 Then you returned and wept before the Lord,

but the Lord would neither listen to your voice nor give ear to you.

46 (Nu 20:1; 20:22) So you dwelt in Kadesh many days,

according to the days you dwelt there.

Conclusion:



Pray to the Lord and pray that the Lord will lay

a righteous foundation in your life.



Pray to the Lord: "Dear God, please remind me to live faithfully

as I walk with You - experiencing satisfaction in Your presence."



Pray to the Lord and pray to the consequences of the Wages of Sin.



Pray to the Lord and pray to know Him as rewarder of obedience.



Pray to the Lord and pray to know Him as love.



Agree in prayer with us for:

- entire congregations and individual believers to catch God's heart

and passion for reaching Muslims in Saskatoon and the other growing

Muslim population centres of Saskatchewan.

- for the eyes and understanding of Canadian youth to be opened to the

spiritual reality of Islam, and not deceived nor manipulated into

converting to a religion which cannot offer assurance of salvation.

- for the few workers among Muslims now engaged there, and for many more

to be raised up into effective witness.

- for prayer and training events that are starting in Saskatoon

to spread and grow to other cities.



Pray that Singaporeans would show warmth and respect to guest

workers in their country.

Pray that believers in Singapore would reach out to Muslim guest

workers with the Good News and warm hospitality.

* Ask that Muslims who love Jesus would share their faith in their

home countries and be beacons of light in their hometowns.



Pray that the Lord will lead the Church in finding ways

to wisely and effectively respond to pressing social issues.



- The Mission Servant Council is planning to send a couple of leaders

to assist some of our long-term overseas workers. Pray that the planning,

logistics, and scheduling would all come together.



- Pray for the 35 foreign workers Calvary supports across all continents

(except Antarctica). Pray for strength over the overworked families,

the weary aged, and isolated singles.



Pray that many Syrians will turn to faith in Christ

through the faithful witness of evangelists.



Pray to the Lord that to know the Holy Spirit.

and Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness



Remember eternity starts now -

Pray for the direction you take to the Ever lasting loving God

Numbers 36

[1] And the chief fathers of the families of the children of Gilead, the son

of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came

near, and spake before Moses, and before the princes, the chief fathers of

the children of Israel:

[2] And they said, The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for an

inheritance by lot to the children of Israel: and my lord was commanded by

the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother unto his

daughters.

[3] And if they be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the

children of Israel, then shall their inheritance be taken from the

inheritance of our fathers, and shall be put to the inheritance of the tribe

whereunto they are received: so shall it be taken from the lot of our

inheritance.

[4] And when the jubile of the children of Israel shall be, then shall their

inheritance be put unto the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they are

received: so shall their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of

the tribe of our fathers.

[5] And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the

LORD, saying, The tribe of the sons of Joseph hath said well.

[6] This is the thing which the LORD doth command concerning the daughters

of Zelophehad, saying, Let them marry to whom they think best; only to the

family of the tribe of their father shall they marry.

[7] So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe

to tribe: for every one of the children of Israel shall keep himself to the

inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

[8] And every daughter, that possesseth an inheritance in any tribe of the

children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her

father, that the children of Israel may enjoy every man the inheritance of

his fathers.

[9] Neither shall the inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe;

but every one of the tribes of the children of Israel shall keep himself to

his own inheritance.

[10] Even as the LORD commanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelophehad:

[11] For Mahlal, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of

Zelophehad, were married unto their father's brothers' sons:

Thirty years ago, I participated in an activity at an unemployment workshop

that I still remember today. My fellow laid-off coworkers and I were asked to

write our retirement speeches. Huh? We were looking for work and far from

retirement age. But the facilitator revealed the purpose of the activity by

saying, "Your speech will probably have little to do with your work." She

explained to us that a job really isn't the center of our lives. And while

we may be grieving the loss of a job, our lives mean much more than being

employed.



The details about the end of Abraham's life remind me of this lesson. He died

at a "ripe old age" and had lived a "long and satisfying life"

(Genesis 25:8 nlt). Throughout Scripture, we read about Abraham's

faithfulness in following God's instructions, but we don't read much about

his work. The faith the patriarch displayed (15:6) reminds me of the Teacher's

conclusion in Ecclesiastes: "To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom,

knowledge and happiness" (2:26). The Teacher said this after considering

the meaning of life and how one can find enjoyment in the midst of work

or toil (vv. 24-25).



Even during times of loss and anxiety brought by unemployment, it's helpful

to reflect on Abraham's example and the Teacher's words - pointing us to true

satisfaction found only in God.

"I only want my rights," declares the belligerent Big Ghost, one of the

characters in C. S. Lewis's classic, The Great Divorce. "I'm not asking

for anybody's bleeding charity."

"Then do. At once," his angelic friend Len urges. "Ask for the Bleeding

Charity. Everything is here for the asking and nothing can be bought."

Often we are much like the Ghost in Lewis's tale of heaven and hell.

We want "What we deserve," and being blind to our own sin, we think

we deserve praise, or al least mercy. But Paul is very clear on what

we have coming: "The wages of sin is death".

We work for our wages - we've earned our paycheque, and we deserve it.

We don't have to thank anyone for paying us - it's our due, not a gift.

Similarly, the paycheque issued to us in renumeration for our sin is

what we deserve: death.

Yet, if we are willing to lay aside our pride and accept God's gift,

we can live. "The gift of God is eternal life." Nothing we can do or say

can make us worthy of the gift of life. We are sinners by nature and we

rebel against God in our choices. Yet God, in Christ, offers grace to us,

freedom from sin, liberty from the burden of trying to earn his favour.

Ironically, freedom and peace in the Christian life come not through

justifying ourselves and making ourselves look good, but through

acknowledging the depth of our sin ad our ability to do anything about it.

When we realise that we are trapped in out sinful selves and only

Christ can free us, then we are ready to journey toward grace and freedom.

Saskatoon has seen quick growth in its Muslim population over the past

5 years, which maybe as high as 5000 today. Islamic leaders have

focused specifically on this city , having twice already sent cohorts

of about 70 families to start mosques. There are now 7 Islamic centres

of worship and an ISlamic madrassah (school) located right next to a

Christian school.

Of particular concern recently is the number of young adults who grew up

in evangelical churches and converted to Islam. Most of these are young

women whowere wooed by Muslim man and became emotionally bonded.

Both prior to and after marrying, these women are known to convert to ISlam.



Agree in prayer with us for:

- entire congregations and individual believers to catch God's heart

and passion for reaching Muslims in Saskatoon and the other growing

Muslim population centres of Saskatchewan.

- for the eyes and understanding of Canadian youth to be opened to the

spiritual reality of Islam, and not deceived nor manipulated into

converting to a religion which cannot offer assurance of salvation.

- for the few workers among Muslims now engaged there, and for many more

to be raised up into effective witness.

- for prayer and training events that are starting in Saskatoon

to spread and grow to other cities.

Pray for Muslims in Singapore



Nearly half a million guest workers, the majority of them Muslim, are

counted in Singapore's population of 6 million. Daud was one of them.

Financial constraints in his family meant he could not continue his

religious studies and fulfill his dream of being an imam. As the

eldest son, he left his family and new bride to join a workforce of

250,000 Bangladeshi migrant workers in Singapore.



Life was very challenging for Daud. As a guest worker with little

knowledge of his legal rights, he was cheated out of agency fees and

he eventually lost his job. Frightened and with nowhere to turn, he

approached some Christians at a local charity for help. He had been

avoiding them, knowing they were from a church, but, at this stage, he

was really was desperate.



The charity staff was generous and caring and treated Daud with respect.



Touched by their care and impressed by what he learned about Isa

Moshiho (Jesus the Messiah), Daud's heart softened. For the first

time, he realized that Allah created him like Himself so that He could

share His thoughts, His will, His plans with him! What an honor - that

God would want a relationship with him! After two months of reading

the Word, Daud received Jesus as His Lord and Saviour and was

baptized.

Daud went on to share what he was learning with his father and his

young wife over the phone, and they too expressed a desire to follow

Jesus. Back at home, Daud immediately started to reach out to his

other relatives. One by one, many came to know the Lord. He testified

that through exploitation and loss, God redeemed him and brought him

from darkness to light. His life became filled with joy once he met

Jesus!



How to Pray



Pray that Singaporeans would show warmth and respect to guest

workers in their country.

Pray that believers in Singapore would reach out to Muslim guest

workers with the Good News and warm hospitality.

* Ask that Muslims who love Jesus would share their faith in their

home countries and be beacons of light in their hometowns.



My paternal side is of Muslim heritage and will offer this section to further

call for Muslim converts to Christian and any other converts to Christianity

(Hindus, Jews, aboriginals Canadian, ...) .

When I was junior-high-aged, I was captivated by aquatic carnivores,

especially sharks and piranhas. I found it exhilarating to watch people swim

in a shiver of sharks without a cage, but rightfully there needed to be a

degree of preparation and fear present. While it is possible to swim

peacefully with these creatures, the diver needed to be clean and free from

any trace of blood, or risk being torn apart.



As we fast, we can rightfully anticipate God's presence, but are we prepared

to be in His presence? Like these courageous divers, we cannot approach God

haphazardly; we need to consecrate ourselves before we step into His power, or

we risk being consumed by His holiness.



Consecration is a fancy way of saying that we dedicate and purify ourselves by

maintaining a singular focus on Him. Often this was expressed through some

kind of outward rituals, like washing oneself with water. A recent modern

equivalent could be the practice of putting on our "Sunday best."



Understandably, we live on the other side of the cross where - unlike

our divers - we are purified by the blood of the Lamb, not by our works.

However, even Jesus said that "those who have had a bath need only wash

their feet." (Jn 13:10 NIV). Furthermore, "if we confess our sins ...

[He] will forgive us our sins and purifies us," (1Jn1:9 NIV, emphasis mine).

Therefore Calvary, let us remove our shoes, fix our gaze, and walk to Him

on the shark-infested waters.

- Pray for the 35 foreign workers Calvary supports across all continents

(except Antarctica). Pray for strength over the overworked families,

the weary aged, and isolated singles.

Cities of Refuge



6 (Jos 21:3; 21:13) Among the cities which you will give to the Levites

there will be six cities of refuge, which you will appoint

for the manslayer, that he may flee there,

and to them you will add 42 cities.

7 So all the cities which you will give to the Levites will be 48 cities.

You will give them with their pasturelands.

8 (Nu 26:54; 33:54) The cities which you shall give shall be from

the possession of the children of Israel. From the larger tribes

you shall give many, and from the smaller tribes you shall give few.

Each tribe, in proportion to the inheritance that it receives,

shall give of its cities to the Levites.

9 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

When you are crossing over the Jordan into the land of Canaan,

your cities of refuge,

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

2 (Ge 17:8; Ps 105:11) Command the children of Israel, and say to them:

When you are going into the land of Canaan, this is the land that will fall

to you for an inheritance, the land of Canaan with its borders.

3 (Ge 14:3; Eze 47:13) Then your south side will be from the Wilderness

of Zin along by the border of Edom, and your south border will be

the end of the Dead Sea to the east.

4 (Nu 32:8) And your border will turn from the south

to the Ascent of Akrabbim, and continue to Zin, and the end of it will be

from the south to Kadesh Barnea. Then it will continue to Hazar Addar,

and pass on to Azmon.

5 (Jos 15:4; Ge 15:18; Jos 15:47) And the border will circle around

from Azmon to the Brook of Egypt, and the end of it will be

at the Mediterranean Sea.

6 For the western border, you will have the Mediterranean Sea

and its coastline. This will be your western border.

7 (Nu 33:37) This will be your northern border:

From the Mediterranean Sea you will mark a line to Mount Hor;

8 (Nu 13:21; 2Ki 14:25) from Mount Hor you will mark a line of your border

to Lebo Hamath, and the limits of the border will be to Zedad.

9 (Eze 47:17) And the border will go on to Ziphron, and the limits of it will

be at Hazar Enan. This will be your northern border.

10 You will mark a line for your eastern border from Hazar Enan to Shepham.

11 (Dt 3:17; 2Ki 23:33) And the border will go down from Shepham to Riblah,

on the east side of Ain, and the border will go down and will reach the side

of the Sea of Kinnereth to the east.

12 (Nu 34:3) And the border will go down to the Jordan, and the limits of it

will be at the Dead Sea.

This will be your land with its borders all around.

13 Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying:

This is the land which you will possess by lot,

which the Lord commanded to give to the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe

14 (Nu 32:33) because the tribe of the children of Reuben by the house

of their fathers and the tribe of the children of Gad by the house of their

fathers have received their inheritance, and half the tribe of Manasseh

has received their inheritance.

15 The two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance

on this side of the Jordan near Jericho to the east, toward the sunrise.

1 (Nu 22:1) And the Lord spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab

2 (Jos 14:3-4; Eze 48:8) Command the children of Israel,

and they will give to the Levites of the inheritance of their possession

cities to dwell in, and you will give the Levites pasturelands

around the city.

3 The cities will be for them to dwell in, and their pasturelands will be

for their livestock, and for their property, and for all their animals.

4 The pasturelands of the cities, which you will give to the Levites,

will reach from the wall of the city

Jesus the True Vine

And every branch that bears fruit, He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

which I have spoken to you.

As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine,

Whenever we leave our homes, we put on layers - like a coat and shoes. We also

put layers over the deeper parts of ourselves - we mask our emotions with

politeness, we cover up the parts of us we don't want the whole world to see.

And then we come home, strip off the extra layers, put away our "going out"

supplies, and settle into home - our safe place. And this is normal! No one

else needs to see my ragged pajamas or crazy bedhead.



We often put these layers of protection between us and God too - we think that

He doesn't need to see us as our most vulnerable selves, before we've put on

our best Christian faces and done something that makes us worthy of His

attention. But we're doing it backwards that way!



I asked the Lord once in my prayer time, "What do you want me to do?"



I heard this: "You already DO; I want you to BE - 'BE still and know that I am

God', BE in My Presence, BE in Me before you DO for me."



Jesus didn't tell us to be fruitful and then come abide in Him. He said,

" Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit,

for apart from me you can do nothing."



Abiding comes when we realise we can be our freshly-woken-up, messy,

unproductive selves with Jesus, because He is our safe place. Fruitfulness

doesn't come from trying harder, doing more, or being better - it comes

from being deeply connected with the Vine, Jesus our Saviour who gives us

life.



We can only be filled and empowered for the task of bearing fruit by

first ... just ... BEING with Jesus.

They sit side by side on Ball Street in my city - the Grand Ideas Garden and

the county jail. My friend Joann loved both places. She loved to sit in the

garden, thinking about the goodness of God and her love for Him because of

what He'd done in her life. She also loved to share with the women in the jail

and tell her story of God redeeming her life after many bad choices and

wandering far from Him. Often, she would tell me of her passion: her dream

that all the women there would someday understand and experience the love

of God for them personally.



The psalmist told his fellow Israelites to "tell their story" of how God

redeemed them from their enemies (Psalm 107:2). They had "wandered in desert

wastelands," "they were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away"

(vv. 4-5). At times they rebelled against God, and He disciplined them

(vv. 10-12). Yet every time "they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,

. . . he delivered them from their distress" (v. 6). They had much to give

God thanks for and to talk about with others. As the Israelites learned, and

we can learn also, He has a love that will never let us go.



We too can take opportunities to "ponder the loving deeds of the Lord" toward

us (v. 43), give thanks to Him, and tell our own story of His rescue.

Week 2 - Saved by Grace - Day 1 - Sin Universal



Romans 3:23-24



23 (Ro 3:9) For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God,

A distinguished middle-aged man stood trembling before his church

to give his testimony. Years before, in the grip of a mental illness

that nearly destroyed his life, he had taken the life of his own daughter

and tried to kill himself. But he did not die; tried and convicted, he

spent years in prison, and even longer in the prison of his own guilt.

After the service, a young woman walked up to him and simply said,

"Thank you for sharing. I've sinned, too."

We've all sinned, too - lest we forget or rationalise, the Bible reminds

us in no uncertain terms. And the writer of these verses was no stranger

to sin: he was the Pharisee, the holier-than-thou religious leader

who officiated at the stoning death of Stephen. He was the Jew who had

scattered and killed the followers of this heretic called Christ. He

thought he was righteous while he murdered God's people.

Christians tends to establish a "hierarchy" of sin - sexual sin is "worse"

than pride: murder is "more horrible" than slander. Yet the Bible gives

no indication that god acknowledges our hierarchy. Sin is sin; all have

sinned, and if we are guilty at one point, we are guilty of all.

Rather than rationalise our individual sins as being "less bad"

than someone else's, we need to openly confess our dilemma as sinners

and turn to God for his remedy. We cannot and do not need to earn or

deserve that grace - it is a gift from God.



Application



a) Have I ever compared my sin with someone else's in order

to make myself fell like a better person? Why is such

comparison not a valid remedy for sin?



b) Why do I need to acknowledge my sin honestly before I can

receive justification?

Saskatoon has seen quick growth in its Muslim population over the past

5 years, which maybe as high as 5000 today. Islamic leaders have

focused specifically on this city , having twice already sent cohorts

of about 70 families to start mosques. There are now 7 Islamic centres

of worship and an ISlamic madrassah (school) located right next to a

Christian school.

Of particular concern recently is the number of young adults who grew up

in evangelical churches and converted to Islam. Most of these are young

women whowere wooed by Muslim man and became emotionally bonded.

Both prior to and after marrying, these women are known to convert to ISlam.



Agree in prayer with us for:

- entire congregations and individual believers to catch God's heart

and passion for reaching Muslims in Saskatoon and the other growing

Muslim population centres of Saskatchewan.

- for the eyes and understanding of Canadian youth to be opened to the

spiritual reality of Islam, and not deceived nor manipulated into

converting to a religion which cannot offer assurance of salvation.

- for the few workers among Muslims now engaged there, and for many more

to be raised up into effective witness.

- for prayer and training events that are starting in Saskatoon

to spread and grow to other cities.

Pray for Uzbekistan



When Ruslan came to faith, he was the first believer in his remote

area. He persevered through so many trials. He was beaten by his father

and brother and left for dead, he was arrested and beaten by the police

and he was stoned when he attempted to attend the funeral of a friend.



Thankfully, however, despite all these events, he saw many Uzbeks come

to faith and several house churches established!



Ruslan's area has very little water and the water that does exist is of

poor quality. Ruslan's wife Imona developed kidney problems as a result

and lost two children during pregnancy. The doctors said she would

never be able to have children. Even his neighbors took this as a bad

omen and commented, "See, that's what happens when you become a

Christian."



Meanwhile, a Christian organisation working in the region saw the need

for clean water in the area of Ruslan's village and decided to help

drill a well. They had to drill very deep, until they hit an

underground river. Now, not only does Ruslan's village have

high-quality drinking water, but the church also makes regular water

deliveries by truck to neighboring villages.



Ruslan invited the police chief, the imam, and all the people who had

persecuted him to the opening ceremony and honored God for his

blessings. Not only do they have clean water, now, but Imona has now

given birth to two beautiful, healthy children.





How to Pray



Pray that Ruslan and his family may find comfort and strength in

their faith.

Pray for more Uzbeks to hear the good news of Jesus in their own

language and dialect.

Cry out for living water to be poured onto thirsty Uzbek hearts by

the Holy Spirit!

Pray that new promises from the government allowing the

registration of churches would be fulfilled.



My paternal side is of Muslim heritage and will offer this section to further

call for Muslim converts to Christian and any other converts to Christianity

(Hindus, Jews, aboriginals Canadian, ...) .

Numbers 32

[1] Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great

multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of

Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;

Recounting Israel's Journey



1 (Ps 77:20; Mic 6:4) These are the journeys of the children of Israel,

who went out of the land of Egypt with their armies under the hand

of Moses and Aaron.

2 (Nu 9:17-23) Moses recorded the starting points of their journeys

at the command of the Lord. These are their journeys according

to their starting points.

3 (Ex 14:8; 12:37) They set out from Rameses in the first month,

on the fifteenth day of the first month. On the day after the Passover

the children of Israel went out with a high hand

in the sight of all the Egyptians,

The Tribes Settling in Gilead

I have a friend who chants to himself, "die to self, die to self," when he is

doing something that he does not want to do for his wife. This is a humourous

thing, but it is a true statement that Jesus calls us to in Luke 9:23: we are

to deny ourselves, give up our own ways, pick up the cross, and follow Him.



This is dying to our old self, not just in changing our actions, but dying to

our old identity. The context of Galatians 2:20 concerns the law and our

inability to fulfill it and be right with God by our own actions. Our identity

is not based on our efforts to do good; it is based on Jesus Christ.

It is trusting Christ to live through you.



Dying to ourselves is relinquishing control of our lives to Christ. It is

accepting God's will over our personal preference, and accepting death to

anything that is not aligned with God. This shift takes away our

self-centeredness and our former self, who was dominated by sin,

is now put to death.



Our new life is now lived by faith in Christ's love and sacrifice,

not by self-directed ambition.



This new identity in Christ can be further studied:



2 Corinthians 5:17,



17 (Jn 3:3; Ro 16:7) Therefore, if any man is in Christ,

he is a new creature. Old things have passed away. Look, all things have

become new.



[17] Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are

passed away; behold, all things are become new.



John 1:12,



12 Yet to all who received Him, He gave the power to become sons of God,

to those who believed in His name,



[12] But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the

sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:



Romans 8:15–16,



15 (Mk 14:36; 1Co 2:12) For you have not received the spirit of slavery

again to fear. But you have received the Spirit of adoption, by whom

Saskatoon has seen quick growth in its Muslim population over the past

5 years, which maybe as high as 5000 today. Islamic leaders have

focused specifically on this city , having twice already sent cohorts

of about 70 families to start mosques. There are now 7 Islamic centres

of worship and an ISlamic madrassah (school) located right next to a

Christian school.

Of particular concern recently is the number of young adults who grew up

in evangelical churches and converted to Islam. Most of these are young

women whowere wooed by Muslim man and became emotionally bonded.

Both prior to and after marrying, these women are known to convert to ISlam.



Agree in prayer with us for:

- entire congregations and individual believers to catch God's heart

Pray for Bangladesh



Five years ago, Rupal and his brother moved to Dhaka, the capital of

Bangladesh, in order to find work. They found an affordable place to

live, with five other men in a small apartment. Rupal thought that one

roommate was different, perhaps because he came from another region.



Aarav ("peaceful") was a peaceful person who never spoke badly about

anyone. But eventually Rupal discovered that this man was reading the

Injil (New Testament) regularly. Rupal tried to talk Aarav out of

reading this book. But Aarav told him that it was different than other

books.



"The Injil changes you!" Aarav said. "When you read it, it seems like a

person talking to you that knows you well."



Rupal wanted to read he Injjil himself, and Aarav allowed him to borrow

his copy. Quickly, Rupal found himself reading it more and more . And

Aarav was proved right. The Injil did seem to change Rupal.



In Matthew 5-7 he found the most beautiful things he had ever heard.

This was the true way! Jesus taught with authority, not like other

teachers. He showed the straight path to God, forgiving enemies and

obeying God, not people.



Rupal decided that he needed Jesus. Some time later, Rupal's brother

started to follow Jesus, too. Now they are seven men following Jesus

and reading together. They love each other and people around them. And,

as they reach out to Bengali people, they show them that the Injil has

not been changed, but that it is the wonderful book that changes you!



How to Pray



Pray for Aarav, Rupal and others, to experience God's wisdom, power

and protection.

Cry out in faith for the more than 135 million Bengali people who

are among the least reached peoples worldwide.

* Pray that the many Bible study groups among the Bengali would

develop into churches glorifying Jesus.

Establishing priorities is a popular topic of conversation in our

generation. We carry appointment calendars and attend goal-setting

strategy seminars. We let machines answer our telephones so that

we won't miss any important messages, or so that we can screen calls

before we answer them. We order our lives so that we can "get ahead".

"Getting ahead" in God's kingdom, however, involves other priorities

than the ones we may set for ourselves. "Wisdom is supreme," the

principal thing, says Proverbs 4:7, "Get wisdom. Though it cost

all you have, get understanding."

Wisdom is defined as "an understanding of what is true, right, or lasting."

Biblical wisdom is not merely the accumulation of facts about God and his

teaching, but the application of those truths of life, taking on

the character of God as we mature in the image of Christ.

Such wisdom may, indeed, come at great cost. Jesus calls us to "lay

down our lives" to follow him - perhaps not literally to die, but to die

to self-centered priorities, to allow the Holy Spirit to establish

his value system in us.

"Keep my commandments and you will live," Proverbs 4:4 says. Real life -

rich, fulfilling, significant, abundant life - comes only through union

with God. The success offered by the world, the acclaim of others, material

prosperity and convenience cannot satisfy us once we have tasted

the joy of life with God in Christ.
