Nahum 1

1 (Isa 13:1; Zep 2:13) An oracle for Nineveh, a writing of the vision

of Nahum, the Elkoshite.



God's Anger With Nineveh



2 (Ex 20:5; Ps 94:1; Zec 8:2) The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;

the Lord avenges and is furious.

The Lord takes vengeance on His enemies,

and He reserves it for His adversaries;

3 (Ex 34:6-7; Ne 9:17) the Lord is slow to anger and great in power,

and the Lord will in no way acquit the guilty.

In gale winds and a storm is His way,

and clouds are the dust of His feet.

4 (Isa 33:9; Ps 106:9) He rebukes and dries up the sea,

and He makes waterless all the rivers.

Bashan and Carmel wither up,

and the sprout of Lebanon wastes away.

5 (Mic 1:4; 2Sa 22:8 )The mountains quake before Him,

and the hills melt;

the land rises up before Him,

the earth and everything that dwells on it.

6 (Mal 3:2; Jer 10:10) Who can stand before His anger?

Who will rise up before His burning wrath?

His heat is poured out like fire,

and the rocks are broken up before Him.

7 (Ps 1:6; Jer 33:11) The Lord is good,

a stronghold in the day of distress;

and He knows those who take refuge in Him.

8 (Isa 8:22; 28:17) As a flood running forth,

He will bring to an end the distress,

and He will pursue His adversaries into darkness.

9 (Na 1:11) Why do you all scheme against the Lord?

He will bring it to an end.

It will not rise up a second time.

10 (Mic 7:4; Mal 4:1) Because they are like interwoven thorns

and as drunkards imbibing,

they are consumed like completely dry stubble.

11 (Na 1:9) Out of you, O Nineveh, comes one,

a worthless counselor,

who devises evil against the Lord.

12 (Isa 37:36) So the Lord says:

"Even though they are full and many,

they will be cut down, and it will pass away.

Even though I have afflicted you,

I will no longer afflict you, O Judah;

13 (Isa 9:4; 10:27) now I will break apart his yoke from over you,

and I will tear apart your bonds."

14 (Ps 109:13; 2Ki 19:37) The Lord has given a command concerning you:

"No longer will your name go forth.

I will cut off the carved image and metal image

from the house of your gods.

I will prepare your grave,

for you are despised."

15 (Isa 52:7; Ro 10:15) Look, on the mountains

come the feet of him who brings good news,

who proclaims peace!

Make your feasts, O Judah,

and complete your vows.

For the wicked one will never again pass through your midst;

he is completely cut down.

them that trust in him.

[8] But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place

thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.

[9] What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end:

affliction shall not rise up the second time.

[10] For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are drunken

as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

[11] There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the LORD, a

wicked counseller.

[12] Thus saith the LORD: Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus

shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through. Though I have afflicted

thee, I will afflict thee no more.

[13] For now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds

in sunder.

[14] And the LORD hath given a commandment concerning thee, that no more of

thy name be sown: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven

image and the molten image: I will make thy grave; for thou art vile.

[15] Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings,

that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows:

for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.



Nahum 2



The Fall of Nineveh



1 (Jer 51:20-23) He who scatters has come to you.

Guard the fortifications!

Watch the road!

Prepare yourself,

and strengthen yourself!

2 (Ps 80:12-13) For the Lord is restoring the prominence of Jacob,

even the prominence of Israel,

for others have certainly

laid waste their vines.

3 (Eze 23:14-15) The shields of his mighty men are soaked red,

even the mighty men are clad in red.

In the day he prepares the chariots,

they are like a fire of iron.

The cypress spears are ready.

4 (Jer 4:13; Isa 66:15) The chariots run wildly through the streets,

they rush to and fro in the open areas;

their appearance is like torches,

they dash to and fro like lightning.

5 (Jer 46:12) He remembers his officers

as they stumble about on the road;

they hurry on to the wall

as the siege tower is set up.

6 The holding gates are opened wide,

and the palace washes away.

7 (Isa 38:14; 59:11) It is decreed:

She is uncovered and led away captive;

her handmaidens shall lead her as with the voice of doves,

beating their chests.

8 Nineveh is like a pool

whose waters run away.

"Halt! Halt!" they cry,

but no one turns back.

9 "Plunder the silver!

Plunder the gold!

There is no limit to the treasure,

or to the wealth of every precious thing."

10 (Ps 22:14; Joel 2:6) She is desolate, empty, and waste!

Hearts melt away, and knees shake;

pain is in all the loins, and all their faces grow pale.

11 (Isa 5:29; Jer 2:15) Where is the den of the lions,

and the feeding place of the young lions,

where the lion and lioness prowl,

and the lion's cub goes, with no one to disturb them?

12 (Jer 51:34) The lion tore enough food for his cubs,

and strangled prey for his lionesses;

he has filled his caves with prey,

and his dens with flesh.

13 (2Ki 19:23; Ps 46:9) I am against you,

says the Lord of Hosts,

and I will burn your chariots in smoke,

and the sword will devour your lions.

I will cut off your prey from the earth,

and the voice of your messengers

will be heard no more.



Nahum 2

[1] He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the munition,

watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily.

[2] For the LORD hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the

excellency

of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine

branches.

[3] The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in

scarlet: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his

preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken.

[4] The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall justle one against

another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run

like the lightnings.

[5] He shall recount his worthies: they shall stumble in their walk; they

shall make hast to the wall thereof, and the defence shall be prepared.

[6] The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be

dissolved.

[7] And Huzzab shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up, and her

maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, tabering upon their

breasts.

[8] But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away.

Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back.

[9] Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold: for there is none

end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture.

[10] She is empty, and void, and waste: and the heart melteth, and the knees

smite together, and much pain is in all loins, and the faces of them all

gather blackness.

[11] Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young

lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion's whelp, and

none made them afraid?

[12] The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for

his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin.

[13] Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her

chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I

will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall

no more be heard.



Nahum 3



Woe to Nineveh



1 (Na 2:12; Hab )2:12 Woe to the bloody city!

It is full of lies

and plunder.

The prey never departs.

2 (Jdg 5:22; Job 39:22-25) The noise of the whip

and the noise of the rattling of the wheels,

galloping horses,

and rushing chariots!

3 (Hab 3:11; Isa 37:36) Horsemen charging

with flashing sword

and glittering spear.

Multitude of slain,

great number of corpses,

dead bodies without end-

they stumble on the corpses-

4 (Isa 47:9; 47:12-13) because of the countless harlotries

of the seductive harlot,

the mistress of sorceries,

who sells nations through her harlotries

and families through her sorceries.

5 (Na 2:13; Jer 13:22) I am against you, says the Lord of Hosts;

I will lift your skirts over your face,

and I will show the nations your nakedness,

and the kingdoms your shame.

6 (Job 9:31; Jer 51:37) I will throw filth on you,

and make you vile,

and make you a spectacle.

7 (Isa 51:19; Jer 15:5) All who look at you will flee from you, and say,

"Nineveh is devastated! Who will lament for her?"

Where shall I seek comforters for you?

8 (Am 6:2; Eze 30:14-16) Are you better than Thebes

that sat by the Nile,

with water around her,

whose rampart was the sea,

and whose wall was the water?

9 (Eze 27:10; 30:5) Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength,

and it was without limit;

Put and Libya were her helpers.

10 (Isa 20:4; Hos 13:16) Yet she went into exile,

she went into captivity;

her young children were dashed to pieces

at the head of every street;

they cast lots for her honorable men,

and all her great men were bound in chains.

you will go into hiding;

you will seek refuge from the enemy.

12 (Rev 6:13) All your fortresses are like fig trees

with first-ripe figs:

If they are shaken,

they fall into the mouth of the eater.

are women in your midst!

The gates of your land

are wide open to your enemies;

fire has devoured your bars.

14 (Na 2:1; 2Ch 32:3-4) Draw water for the siege!

Strengthen your forts!

Go into the clay and

tread the mortar!

Take hold of the brick mold!

15 (Joel 1:4; Na 2:13) There the fire will devour you,

the sword will cut you off;

it will eat you up like the locust.

Multiply yourselves-like the locust!

Multiply-like the grasshopper!

16 You have multiplied your merchants

more than the stars of heaven.

The locust plunders

and flies away.

17 (Jer 51:27; Rev 9:7) Your leaders are like grasshoppers,

your commanders like swarms of locusts,

which camp in the hedges on a cold day;

when the sun rises they fly away,

and the place where they are is not known.

Your nobles lie in the dust.

Your people are scattered on the mountains,

and no one gathers them.

for upon whom has not your wickedness

[1] Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and robbery; the prey

departeth not;

[2] The noise of a whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of

the pransing horses, and of the jumping chariots.

[3] The horseman lifteth up both the bright sword and the glittering spear:

and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and

there is none end of their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses:

[4] Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot,

the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms,

and families through her witchcrafts.

[5] Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts; and I will discover

thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and

the kingdoms thy shame.

[6] And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and

will set thee as a gazingstock.

[7] And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee

from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall

I seek comforters for thee?

[8] Art thou better than populous No, that was situate among the rivers,

that had the waters round about it, whose rampart was the sea, and her wall

was from the sea?

[9] Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim

were thy helpers.

[10] Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children

also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots

for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.

[11] Thou also shalt be drunken: thou shalt be hid, thou also shalt seek

strength because of the enemy.

[12] All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs:

if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.

[13] Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy

land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars.

[14] Draw thee waters for the siege, fortify thy strong holds: go into clay,

and tread the morter, make strong the brickkiln.

[15] There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off, it

shall eat thee up like the cankerworm: make thyself many as the cankerworm,

make thyself many as the locusts.

[16] Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the

cankerworm spoileth, and flieth away.

[17] Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great

grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun

ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.

[18] Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in the

dust: thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them.

[19] There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear

Isaiah 53:1-6



1 (Jn 12:38; Isa 51:9) Who has believed our report?

And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

2 (Isa 52:14; 11:1; Jer 23:5) For he grew up before Him as a tender plant

and as a root out of a dry ground.

He has no form or majesty that we should look upon him

nor appearance that we should desire him.

3 (Isa 49:7; 53:10) He was despised and rejected of men,

a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.

And we hid, as it were, our faces from him;

he was despised, and we did not esteem him.

4 (Mt 8:17; Jn 19:7) Surely he has borne our grief

and carried our sorrows;

Yet we esteemed him stricken,

smitten of God, and afflicted.

For more than 130 years, the Eiffel Tower has stood majestically over

the city of Paris, a symbol of architectural brilliance and beauty.

The city proudly promotes the tower as a key element of its magnificence.



As it was being built, however, many people thought little of it.

Famous French writer Guy de Maupassant, for example, said it had

"a ridiculous thin shape like a factory chimney." He couldn't see its beauty.



Those of us who love Jesus and have entrusted our hearts to Him as our Saviour

count Him as beautiful for who He is and what He's done for us. Yet the

prophet Isaiah penned these words: "He had no beauty or majesty to attract us

to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him" (53:2).



But the towering majesty of what He did for us is the truest, purest form of

beauty that humans will ever know and experience. He "took up our pain

and bore our suffering" (v. 4). He was "pierced for our transgressions,

he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace

was on him, and by his wounds we are healed" (v. 5).



We'll never know anyone as beautiful-as majestic-as the one who suffered for

us on the cross, taking the unspeakable punishment of our sins upon Himself.



That's Jesus. The Beautiful One. Let's look to Him and live.

Week 6 Showing Grace to Others - Day 4 "Formula" for Forgiveness



Luke 17:3 - 4



3 (Lev 19:17; Mt 18:21)"Take heed to yourselves."

"If your brother sins against you, rebuke him. And if he repents,

forgive him.

4 (Mt 18:21-22) If he sins against you seven times in a day,

and seven times in a day turns to you, saying,

'I repent,' you must forgive him."



3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him;

and if he repent, forgive him.

4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day,

and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent;

thou shalt forgive him.



The context of these verses give us an interesting perspective of Jesus'

disciples. In a corollary passage in Matthew 18, the disciples (through

Peter, the designated mouthpiece) ask Jesus,

21 (Mt 18:15; Lk 17:3-4) Then Peter came to Him and said,

"Lord, how often shall I forgive my brother who sins against me?

Up to seven times?" (Matthew 18:21)

The disciples wanted a "formula" for forgiveness: they wanted to be able to

develop a checklist. Once, twice, maybe three times a brother could be

forgiven, but after that, you could write him off. After all, if

he keeps on offending over and over again, he doesn't deserve to be forgiven!

But Jesus says, " Rebuke him - let him know his fault; if he repents,

forgive him - even seven times in the same day!"

And the disciplines' response is predictable: "Lord, increase our faith!" They

were more comfortable with their own formula for forgiveness than with the

outrageous demands of the love that Christ imposed upon them.

We are so like the disciples. We want to draw a line and say. "This far

- no more. I'll forgive you once, but don't do it again. Now that you're

forgiven, you'd better shape up!". Yet God's love doesn't recognise "again".

He forgives, and no matter how often we come to him in repentance

for repeated offenses, his arms of forgiveness are open to us.

That is the way God wants us to forgive. He wants us to lay aside our

checklists, put away our suspicions, abandon our scoreboards, and forgive.

Seven times, or seventy times seven, as often as we have sinned against God

and been forgiven, we are to forgive.



Application



a) Have I ever kept a "scorecard" of performance on someone I

have forgiven ? Why?



b) Why do I need "increased faith" to be able to forgive as

Jesus calls me to?

True Wisdom

Moncton, followed by Fredericton and Saint John, each have a growing Muslim

population in New Brunswick, In 2007, the building that was formerly a Baptist

church was converted into Moncton's 1st mosque. The University of Moncton

also has a Muslim student association hosting prayer services, fellowship

getherings, and outreaches on campus.

Fredericton also has one mosque and a Muslim student association serving the

campuses of the University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University.

Fredericton's Muslim population consists in 2014 of about 50 families,

and between 300 to 400 university students.

Saint John is home to the 1st Muslim Association for the province,

which also helped foster the Islamic associations of Fredericton and Moncton.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month

and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days

of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

As I prepared for my mom's celebration of life service, I prayed for the

right words to describe her "hyphen years"-the years between her birth

and death. I reflected on the good and not-so-good times in our relationship.

I praised God for the day my mom accepted Jesus as her Saviour after she saw

Him "changing" me. I thanked Him for helping us grow in faith together

and for the people who shared how my mom encouraged and prayed for them while

showering them with kindness. My imperfect mom enjoyed a meaningful

hyphen-a life well-lived for Jesus.



Not one believer in Jesus is perfect. However, the Holy Spirit can enable

us to "live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way"

(Colossians 1:10). According to the apostle Paul, the church of Colossae

was known for their faith and love (vv. 3-6). The Holy Spirit gave them

"wisdom and understanding" and empowered them to "[bear] fruit in every

good work, growing in the knowledge of God" (vv. 9-10). As Paul prayed

for and praised those believers, he proclaimed the name of Jesus, the one

"in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins" (v. 14).



When we surrender to the Holy Spirit, we too can grow in our knowledge of God,

love Him and people, spread the gospel, and enjoy a meaningful hyphen-a life

well-lived for Jesus.

Don had lost his job because he stood against his boss and refused to

compromise his Christian principles. Certain friends in the company had

turned against him, choosing to save their own jobs at any cost,

and he felt very alone, abandoned when he most needed the support

of those who cared.

But Don showed no signs of bitterness or unforgiveness. He refused to

recite the details of his firing to those around him, saying simply and

honestly, " I believe my boss was wrong in what he did. But God can show

him." The kindness of Don's heart, and the tenderness with which he

extended forgiveness, became a testimony to all who knew him. Don's

boss never "saw the light", never repented, but Don lived in the freedom of

forgiving.

Comparison is a rare commodity among Christains today. We seem to be

overstocked with judgment and crammed full of condemnation, but we have

little space in the corners of our lives for tenderheartedness. We are quick

to assume that we know another person's heart and have the remedy for

the problem, rather then giving that person the benefit of the doubt,

the room to grow, the freedom to make a mistake and seek forgiveness.

Jesus demonstrated the king compassion necessary in forgiveness when he

looked down at the soldiers who has crucified him, gambling at his feet

for his cloak, and said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what

are doing."

When others hurt and betray us, they often "do not know what they are

doing." we can, in Christ, offer compassionate forgiveness to them -

not condoning their actions or excusing their wrong, but forgiving ,

in the simplicity and purity of God's love.

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

for I am holier than you!"

These are smoke in My nose,

a fire that burns all day.

6 (Ps 50:3; Jer 16:18) See, it is written before Me:

I will not keep silent, but I will recompense,

even recompense into their bosom,

7 (Ex 20:5; Isa 57:7) your iniquities and the iniquities

of your fathers together, says the Lord;

because they have burned incense on the mountains

and blasphemed Me on the hills,

therefore, I will measure their former work

into their bosom.

As the new wine is found in the cluster,

and one says, "Do not destroy it

for a blessing is in it,"

so I will do for the sake of My servants

ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be

thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed:

[14] Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for

sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit.

[15] And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord

GOD shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name:

[16] That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the

God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of

truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid

from mine eyes.



The New Creation



17 (2Pe 3:13; Isa 66:22; Jer 3:16) For I create

new heavens and a new earth;

the former things shall not be remembered

or come to mind.

18 (Ps 98:1-9) But be glad and rejoice forever

in that which I create;

for I create Jerusalem for rejoicing

and her people for joy.

19 (Isa 35:10; 25:8) I will rejoice in Jerusalem

and be glad in My people;

and the voice of weeping shall no longer be heard in her,

nor the voice of crying.

True Worship

1 (1Ki 8:27; Mt 5:34-35) Thus says the Lord:

Heaven is My throne,

and the earth is My footstool.

Where then is the house that you could build for Me?

And where is the place of My rest?

2 (Isa 57:15; Ps 34:18) For My hand made all those things,

thus all those things have come to be,

says the Lord.

But to this man I will look,

even to him who is poor and of a contrite spirit,

and trembles at My word.

3 (Lev 2:2) He who kills a bull

is as if he kills a man;

he who sacrifices a lamb,

as if he breaks a dog's neck;

he who offers a grain offering,

as if he offers swine's blood;

he who burns incense,

as if he blesses an idol.

They have chosen their own ways,

and their soul delights in their abominations;

The Vindication of Zion

Your brothers who hate you,

who cast you out for My name's sake, said,

"Let the Lord be glorified

that we may see your joy."

Yet they shall be ashamed.

the voice of the Lord

who renders recompense to His enemies.

God's Reign and Final Judgment

Prophecies of Persia and Greece



10 (Jer 1:9; Da 8:18) But then a hand touched me, which set me on my knees

11 (Eze 2:1; Da 8:16-17) He said to me, "O Daniel, a man greatly beloved,

understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright, for I have

been sent to you now." And when he had spoken this word to me,

I stood trembling.

12 (Ac 10:30-31; Da 9:20-23) Then he said to me, "Do not be afraid, Daniel.

For from the first day that you set your heart to understand this

and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard,

and I have come because of your words.

13 (Da 12:1; Jude 1:9; Rev 12:7) But the prince of the kingdom of Persia

withstood me for 21 days. So Michael, one of the chief princes,

came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia.

me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have

[17] For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as

for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there

breath left in me.

[18] Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man,

and he strengthened me,

[19] And said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be

strong, yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened,

and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.



Pilgrim is a musical based on The Pilgrim's Progress, an allegory of the life

of a believer in Jesus. In the story, all the unseen forces of the spiritual

world are made visible to the audience. The character of the King,

representing God, is present onstage for almost the entire show. He's dressed

in white and actively blocks attacks from the enemy, tenderly holds those who

are in pain, and nudges others to good works. Despite his indispensable role,

the main human characters can't physically see the King, only the effects

of what He does.



Do we live as if the true King is active in our lives, even when we can't

physically see Him? In a time of need, the prophet Daniel received a vision

from a heavenly messenger (Daniel 10:7) who'd been sent in direct response

to his faithful prayers (v. 12). The messenger explained that spiritual

warfare had delayed his coming and angelic backup had to be dispatched

surrounded by evidence of His care and attention. "Do not be afraid,

you are highly esteemed," the messenger encouraged him (v. 19). At the

end of Pilgrim, when the main character reaches heaven's door after many

tribulations, he joyfully cries out for the first time, "I can see the King!"

Until we see Him with our new eyes in heaven, we look for His action in

our lives today.

Ann had been badly wounded in a relationship that had ended in anger

and accusation. For more than a year, Ann nursed her bitterness, rallying

support for her attitudes from friends and colleagues. Any time she saw

her former friend, Ann put up an icy wall of hostility. She thought she was

"getting over" the hurt, but the very mention of her friend's name brought

back a flood of negative feelings. Ann was trapped, locked in a prison of

unforgiveness , a jail built block by block by her own unwillingness to

forgive. Ann didn't "get over it"; instead, her wounds festered

and her bitterness grew worse.

Then one day - she never knew how - Ann let go of her bitterness. The barriers

of hostility and anger melted away, and when she saw her friend again, she was

able to forgive. And Ann was finally able to turn to the Lord for her own

healing and forgiveness.

"If you do not forgive," Jesus says - and the statement falls hard on

unforgiving hearts, "Neither will you be forgiven." In one sense, God's

forgiveness is unconditional - we do not have to earn or deserve it, and it is

always available to us. But we cannot experience the forgiveness God has

extended to us when we harbour unforgiveness towards others and build walls

of bitterness in our hearts.

When we refuse forgiveness toward those who have hurt or betrayed us, we do

not keep them in bondage, but ourselves. We lock ourselves away for an

awareness of God's loving presence; we imprison ourselves in a cell of

revenge. But when we reach out to forgive, we turn in the lock;

the door is open for our own sins to be forgiven and our own hearts

cleansed and purified.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month

and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days

of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.



For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.



You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"



Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:



- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,

"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;

your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.

18 Even on My menservants and maidservants

12 (Ac 19:35) Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes,

The Return to Antioch in Syria



21 (Ac 13:51; 14:19) When they had preached the gospel to that city

and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra

and to Iconium and to Antioch,

22 (Jn 16:33; 2Ti 3:12) strengthening the minds of the disciples

and exhorting them to continue in the faith, to go through many afflictions

The Consequence of Sin

you and your God,

and your sins have hidden His face from you

The Redeemer of Zion

Then the Lord saw it, and it displeased Him

3 (Isa 49:23; 45:14; Rev 21:24) The nations shall come to your light

and kings to the brightness of your rising.

4 (Isa 49:18; 49:20-22) Lift up your eyes all around, and see:

They all gather themselves together; they come to you;

your sons shall come from afar,

and your daughters shall be carried at your side.

because the abundance of the sea shall be converted to you,

The Lord's Favour



1 (Ps 45:7; Isa 42:7) The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me

because the Lord has anointed me

to preach good news to the poor;

He has sent me to heal the broken-hearted,

to proclaim liberty to the captives,

and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

2 (Isa 34:8; 57:18) to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord

and the day of vengeance of our God;

to comfort all who mourn,

3 (Ps 45:7; 23:5) to preserve those who mourn in Zion,

to give to them beauty

for ashes,

the oil of joy

for mourning,

the garment of praise

for the spirit of heaviness,

that they might be called trees of righteousness,

the planting of the Lord,

that He might be glorified.

4 (Isa 58:12) They shall build the old ruins;

they shall raise up the former desolations,

and they shall repair the waste cities,

the desolations of many generations.

5 (Isa 14:1-2) Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks,

and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.

6 (Ex 19:6; Isa 66:21) But you shall be named the priests of the Lord;

men shall call you the ministers of our God.

You shall eat the riches of the nations,

and in their glory you shall boast.

7 (Isa 40:2; Zec 9:12) Instead of your shame

you shall have double honor,

and instead of humiliation

they shall rejoice over their portion.

Therefore, in their land they shall possess a double portion;

everlasting joy shall be theirs.

8 (Isa 55:3; Ps 11:7) For I, the Lord, love justice,

I hate robbery in the burnt offering;

and I will faithfully give them their recompense

and make an everlasting covenant with them.

9 (Isa 44:3) Their descendants shall be known among the nations

and their offspring among the peoples.

All who see them shall acknowledge them

because they are the descendants whom the Lord has blessed.

my soul shall be joyful in my God;

for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation,

He has covered me with the robe of righteousness,

as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments,

11 (Ps 85:11; Isa 60:18) For as the earth brings forth her buds,

and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth,

so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise

to spring forth before all the nations.

The Salvation of Zion

1 (Pr 4:18; Isa 62:6-7) For the sake of Zion I will not keep silent,

and for the sake of Jerusalem I will not rest

until her righteousness goes forth as brightness

and her salvation as a lamp that burns.

2 (Isa 62:4; 62:12) The nations shall see your righteousness,

and all kings your glory.

And you shall be called by a new name,

which the mouth of the Lord shall name.

3 (Zec 9:16; 1Th 2:19) You shall also be a crown of glory

in the hand of the Lord

and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

4 (Jer 32:41; Zep 3:17) You shall no more be termed Forsaken,

nor shall your land be termed Desolate;

but you shall be called My Delight Is In Her,

and your land Married;

for the Lord delights in you,

and your land shall be married.

5 (Isa 65:19) For as a young man marries a virgin,

so your sons shall marry you;

and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,

so your God shall rejoice over you.

6 (Isa 52:8; Ps 74:2) I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem,

who shall never hold their peace day nor night.

You who remind the Lord,

do not keep silent;

7 (Jer 33:9; Zep 3:19-20 ) give Him no rest until He establishes

and makes Jerusalem a glory in the earth.

8 (Dt 28:33; Jer 5:17) The Lord has sworn by His right hand

and by His strong arm:

Surely I will no longer give your grain

as food for your enemies;

and the sons of the foreigners shall not drink your wine

for which you have labored.

9 (Dt 12:12) But those who have gathered it shall eat it

and praise the Lord;

and those who have brought it shall drink it

in the courts of My sanctuary.

10 (Isa 57:14; 49:22) Go through, go through the gates.

Prepare the way of the people;

build up, build up the highway.

Remove the stones;

lift up a standard over the peoples.

11 (Zec 9:9; Mt 21:5; Rev 22:12) The Lord has proclaimed

to the ends of the earth:

Say to the daughter of Zion,

"See, your salvation comes;

see, His reward is with Him,

and His recompense before Him."

12 (Isa 62:4; 35:9) They shall call them The Holy People,

the Redeemed of the Lord;

The Revenge of God

The Mercy of God Remembered



7 (Ps 51:1; Eph 2:4 ) I will mention the steadfast love of the Lord

which He has bestowed on them

according to His mercy,

and according to the multitude of His kindnesses.

sons who will not lie."

So He became their Savior.

A Prayer of Penitence

Susy wept as she sat outside the hospital's intensive care unit-waves of

paralysing fear sweeping over her. The tiny lungs of her two-month-old baby

were filled with fluid, and doctors said they were doing their best to save

him but gave no guarantees. At that moment she says she "felt the sweet,

gentle nudging of the Holy Spirit reminding [her] to worship God." With no

strength to sing, she played praise songs on her phone over the next three

days in the hospital. As she worshiped, she found hope and peace. Today,

she says the experience taught her that "worship doesn't change God,

but it definitely changes you."



Facing desperate circumstances, David called out to God in prayer and praise

(Psalm 30:8). One commentator notes that the psalmist prayed "for grace issued

in praise and transformation." God turned David's "wailing into dancing" and

he declared that he would "praise [God] forever"-in all circumstances

(vv. 11-12). While it can be hard to praise God during painful times, it can

lead to transformation. From despair to hope, from fear to faith. And He can

use our example to encourage and transform others (vv. 4-5).



Susy’s baby boy was restored to health by God's grace. While not all challenges

in life will end as we hope they will, He can transform us and fill us with

renewed joy (v. 11) as we worship Him even in our pain.

Week 6 Showing Grace to Others - Day 1 - Forgiving as God Forgave



Col 3:13



13 Bear with one another and forgive one another. If anyone

has a quarrel against anyone, even as Christ forgave you, so you must do.



13 forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man

have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.



"No!" Brett slammed his hand against the desk to punctuate his point.

"My wife's infidelity is completely unforgivable. She just wants to make things

look good, to have me condone her new relationship.

I won't do it. I won't forgive her."

Brett was a man in pain, and his perspective on forgiving

his wife is understandable. But unfortunately, many of us are

the victims of "unforgivable" offenses; many of us, as well,

are the perpetrators of such offenses, and we desperately need

to be forgiven.

Brett ultimately came to understand that forgiving and "unforgivable"

hurt is not based on the worthiness of the recipient of forgiveness,

but on the worthiness of Christ himself. The Bible teaches that we are bound

to forgiveness for one simple reason:

because God has forgiven us in Jesus Christ.

"Forgive as the Lord forgave", Paul commands in Col 3:13 . How did Christ

forgive? Freely, completely, without basing his forgiveness on our merit. He

forgave us unilaterally, offering forgiveness before we asked,

before we were aware of our sin and the pain it caused him,

before we came to him in repentance.

Forgiveness does more that release the perpetrator for the bondage of

his wrongdoing. It releases the victim as well. Forgiveness frees

the forgiver from the bondage of anger and bitterness that keeps him distant

from the love of God. We can forgive the most "unforgivable" of offenses

against us when we focus our attention not on the offender, but on Christ,

who forgave us.



Application



a) Have I ever harboured unforgiveness toward another person?

What was the result in my spiritual/emotional life?



b) Is there someone in my life who has hurt me, who I need to forgive?

How can this verse help me extend the forgiveness to that person?

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month

and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days

of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.



For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.



You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"



Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:



- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,

"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;

your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.

18 Even on My menservants and maidservants

I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.

19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below:

blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,

and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.

21 And whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."[a]

I struggled with depression, brokenness, and addiction to
