1) Jeremiah 51,52

Jeremiah 51

The Destruction of Babylon

1 (Jer 4:11-12; Hos 13:15) Thus says the Lord:

I will raise up against Babylon,

and against those who dwell in Leb Kamai,

the spirit of a destroyer.

2 (Jer 15:7; Mt 3:12) And I will send foreigners to Babylon

that they may winnow her and empty her land.

For in the day of trouble

they will be against her all around.

3 (Jer 46:4; 50:14) Let not him who bends his bow bend it,

and let him not rise up in his scale-armor,

and do not spare her young men;

utterly destroy all her host.

4 (Jer 49:26; Isa 13:15) Thus the slain will fall

in the land of the Chaldeans,

and those who are thrust through in her streets.

5 (Hos 4:1; Jer 33:24-26) For Israel has not been forsaken, nor Judah,

by his God, the Lord of Hosts,

though their land was filled with sin

against the Holy One of Israel.

6 (Jer 50:8; 50:15; 50:28) Flee out of the midst of Babylon,

and each of you deliver his soul!

Do not be cut off in her punishment,

for this is the time of the vengeance of the Lord;

He will render to her a recompense.

7 (Rev 14:8; 17:4; 17:2) Babylon has been a golden cup

in the hand of the Lord,

that made all the earth drunk.

The nations have drunk of her wine;

therefore the nations are mad.

8 (Isa 21:9; Jer 46:11) Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed.

Howl for her.

Take balm for her pain;

perhaps she may be healed.

9 (Isa 13:14; Jer 50:16) We applied healing to Babylon,

but she is not healed.

Forsake her, and let us each go into his own country;

for her judgment reaches to heaven

and is lifted up even to the skies.

10 (Jer 50:28; Ps 37:6) The Lord has brought forth our righteousness.

Come, and let us declare in Zion

the work of the Lord our God.

11 (Jer 46:4; 50:45) Sharpen the arrows.

Gather the shields.

The Lord has raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes.

For His device is against Babylon, to destroy it;

because it is the vengeance of the Lord,

the vengeance of His temple.

12 (Isa 13:2; Jer 51:11) Set up the standard against the walls of Babylon,

make the watch strong,

set up the watchmen,

prepare the ambushes.

For the Lord has both devised and done

that which He spoke against the inhabitants of Babylon.

13 (Rev 17:1; Isa 45:3) O you who dwell by many waters,

abundant in treasures,

your end has come,

and the measure of your end.

14 (Jer 49:13; 50:15) The Lord of Hosts has sworn by Himself,

saying: Surely I will fill you with men, as with locusts,

and they will lift up shouts of victory against you.

[1] Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and

against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a

destroying wind;

[2] And will send unto Babylon fanners, that shall fan her, and shall empty

her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.

[3] Against him that bendeth let the archer bend his bow, and against him

that lifteth himself up in his brigandine: and spare ye not her young men;

destroy ye utterly all her host.

[4] Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and they that

are thrust through in her streets.

[5] For Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the LORD of

hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.

[6] Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not

cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD's vengeance; he

will render unto her a recompence.

[7] Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD's hand, that made all the

earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations

are mad.

[8] Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for

her pain, if so she may be healed.

[9] We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and

let us go every one into his own country: for her judgment reacheth unto

heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.

spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his device is against Babylon, to

destroy it; because it is the vengeance of the LORD, the vengeance of his

[12] Set up the standard upon the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong,

set up the watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for the LORD hath both devised

and done that which he spake against the inhabitants of Babylon.

[13] O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end

is come, and the measure of thy covetousness.

[14] The LORD of hosts hath sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill

thee with men, as with caterpillers; and they shall lift up a shout against

thee.

15 (Job 9:8; Jer 10:12-16) He has made the earth by His power;

He has established the world by His wisdom,

and has stretched out the heaven by His understanding.

16 (Ps 135:7; 18:13; Jnh 1:4) When He utters His voice,

there is a multitude of waters in the heavens,

and He causes the clouds to ascend from the remote parts of the earth;

He makes lightning with rain,

and brings out the wind from His storehouses.

17 (Jer 10:14; Hab 2:18-19) Every man is ignorant by His knowledge;

every founder is humiliated by the graven image,

for his molded image is falsehood,

and there is no breath in them.

18 They are vanity, the work of errors;

in the time of their punishment they will perish.

19 (Jer 10:16; Ps 73:26) The portion of Jacob is not like them,

for He is the former of all things,

and Israel is the rod of His inheritance.

The Lord of Hosts is His name.

20 (Isa 10:5; 41:15-16) He says: You are My battle-ax

and weapon of war:

for with you I will break in pieces the nations,

and with you I will destroy kingdoms;

21 (Ex 15:1) and with you I will break in pieces the horse and his rider;

and with you I will break in pieces the chariot and his rider.

22 (2Ch 36:17; Isa 13:18) With you also I will break in pieces man and woman;

and with you I will break in pieces old and young;

and with you I will break in pieces the young man and the young woman.

23 I will also break in pieces with you the shepherd and his flock;

and with you I will break in pieces the farmer and his yoke of oxen;

and with you I will break in pieces captains and rulers.

24 (Jer 50:15) I will render to Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea

all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight, says the Lord.

25 (Rev 8:8; Zec 4:7; Isa 13:2) I am against you, O destroying mountain,

says the Lord,

who destroys all the earth.

And I will stretch out My hand against you,

and roll you down from the rocks,

and will make you a burned mountain.

26 (Isa 13:19-22; Jer 50:12-13) They will not take of you

a stone for a corner,

or a stone for foundations,

but you will be desolate forever,

says the Lord.

27 (Ge 8:4; 10:3) Set up a standard in the land,

blow the trumpet among the nations,

prepare the nations against her,

call together against her the kingdoms

of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz;

appoint a captain against her.

Cause the horses to come up as the rough locusts.

28 (Jer 51:11) Prepare against her the nations,

the kings of the Medes,

the captains, and all the rulers,

and every land of their dominion.

29 (Jer 8:16; 51:43) So the land trembles and sorrows,

for the purposes of the Lord will be performed against Babylon,

to make the land of Babylon a desolation

without an inhabitant.

30 (Na 3:13; La 2:9; Isa 13:7-8) The mighty men of Babylon

have ceased fighting;

they have remained in their strongholds.

Their might has failed;

they became as women.

They have burned her dwelling places;

the bars of her gates are broken.

31 (2Sa 18:19-31; 2Ch 30:6) One courier will run to meet another,

and one messenger to meet another,

to show the king of Babylon

that his city has been captured from end to end,

32 and the passages have been seized,

and they have burned the reeds with fire,

and the men of war are terrified.

33 (Isa 21:10; Hos 6:11) For thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel:

The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor,

it is time to thresh her;

yet a little while and the time of her harvest will come.

34 (Jer 50:17; 51:44) "Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon

has devoured me and crushed me;

he has made me an empty vessel.

He has swallowed me up like a dragon;

he has filled his belly with my delicacies,

he has cast me out.

35 May the violence done to me and to my flesh be upon Babylon,"

the inhabitant of Zion will say;

and, "May my blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea,"

Jerusalem will say.

36 (Jer 50:38; Ps 140:12) Therefore thus says the Lord:

I will plead your cause,

and take vengeance for you.

And I will dry up her sea,

and make her springs dry.

37 (Rev 18:2; Jer 18:16) Babylon will become heaps,

a dwelling place for jackals,

an astonishment, and a hissing,

without an inhabitant.

38 (Jer 2:15) They will roar together like young lions;

they will growl as lions' whelps.

39 (Jer 51:57; 25:27) When they become heated up,

I will make their feasts,

and I will make them drunk,

that they may rejoice,

and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not awake,

says the Lord.

40 (Jer 50:27) I will bring them down

like lambs to the slaughter,

like rams with male goats.

41 (Jer 25:26; Isa 13:19) How Sheshak has been captured!

And how the praise of the whole earth has been seized!

How Babylon has become an astonishment

among the nations!

42 (Isa 8:7-8; Da 9:26) The sea has come up over Babylon;

she has been covered with the multitude of the waves.

43 (Isa 13:20; Jer 2:6) Her cities have become a desolation,

a dry land and a wilderness,

a land in which no man dwells,

through which no son of man passes.

44 (Jer 51:34; 51:58) I will punish Bel in Babylon,

and I will bring forth from his mouth what he has swallowed up;

and the nations will not flow together any more to him.

Indeed, the wall of Babylon will fall.

45 (Jer 51:6; Isa 48:20) My people, go out of her midst,

and deliver every man his soul

from the fierce anger of the Lord,

46 (2Ki 19:7; Isa 13:3-5) lest your heart grows faint, and you are afraid

for the report that will be heard in the land-

for the report will come one year, and after that in another year will come

another report,

and violence will be in the land,

ruler against ruler-

47 (Jer 50:2; Isa 46:1-2) therefore the days are coming

when I will punish the graven images of Babylon;

and her whole land will be humiliated,

and all her slain will fall in her midst.

48 (Isa 44:23; Rev 18:20) Then the heaven and the earth,

and all that is in it,

shall sing for joy over Babylon;

for the destroyers will come to her

from the north,

says the Lord.

49 (Jer 50:29; 51:24) As Babylon has caused the slain of Israel to fall,

so at Babylon the slain of all the earth will fall.

50 (Jer 44:28; Dt 4:29-31) You who have escaped the sword,

go away, do not stand still.

Remember the Lord afar off,

and let Jerusalem come into your mind.

51 (La 1:10; Ps 44:13-16) We are humiliated

because we have heard reproach.

Shame has covered our faces,

for strangers have come into

the holy places of the house of the Lord.

52 (Jer 51:47; 50:38) Therefore, surely the days are coming, says the Lord,

when I will punish her graven images,

and the mortally wounded shall groan

through all her land.

53 (Jer 49:16; Ge 11:4) Though Babylon should mount up to heaven,

and though she should fortify the height of her strength,

yet from Me will destroyers come to her,

says the Lord.

54 (Jer 50:22; 48:3-5) A sound of an outcry comes from Babylon,

and great destruction

from the land of the Chaldeans,

55 because the Lord has devastated Babylon,

and destroyed the great voice out of her.

When her waves roar like great waters,

a noise of their voice is uttered.

56 (Ps 46:9; 94:1-2) Because the destroyer is coming against her,

even upon Babylon, and her mighty men will be captured,

every one of their bows are broken.

For the Lord is a God of recompense;

He will completely repay.

57 (Jer 46:18; 25:27) I will make her officials drunk, and her wise men,

her captains, and her rulers, and her mighty men;

and they will sleep a perpetual sleep, and not awake,

says the King whose name is the Lord of Hosts.

58 (Jer 51:64; Hab 2:13) Thus says the Lord of Hosts:

The broad wall of Babylon will be utterly broken,

and her high gates will be burned with fire;

and the peoples will labor in vain,

and the nations become exhausted only for fire.

[15] He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by

his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding.

[16] When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the

heavens; and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth: he

maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his

treasures.

[17] Every man is brutish by his knowledge; every founder is confounded by

the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath

in them.

[18] They are vanity, the work of errors: in the time of their visitation

they shall perish.

[19] The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the former of all

fire, and the men of war are affrighted.

[42] The sea is come up upon Babylon: she is covered with the multitude of

the waves thereof.

[43] Her cities are a desolation, a dry land, and a wilderness, a land

wherein no man dwelleth, neither doth any son of man pass thereby.

[44] And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his

mouth that which he hath swallowed up: and the nations shall not flow

together any more unto him: yea, the wall of Babylon shall fall.

[45] My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and deliver ye every man his

soul from the fierce anger of the LORD.

[46] And lest your heart faint, and ye fear for the rumour that shall be

heard in the land; a rumour shall both come one year, and after that in

another year shall come a rumour, and violence in the land, ruler against

ruler.

[47] Therefore, behold, the days come, that I will do judgment upon the

graven images of Babylon: and her whole land shall be confounded, and all

her slain shall fall in the midst of her.

[48] Then the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, shall sing for

Babylon: for the spoilers shall come unto her from the north, saith the

LORD.

[49] As Babylon hath caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall

fall the slain of all the earth.

[50] Ye that have escaped the sword, go away, stand not still: remember the

LORD afar off, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.

[51] We are confounded, because we have heard reproach: shame hath covered

our faces: for strangers are come into the sanctuaries of the LORD's house.

[52] Wherefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will do

judgment upon her graven images: and through all her land the wounded shall

groan.

[53] Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify

the height of her strength, yet from me shall spoilers come unto her, saith

the LORD.

[54] A sound of a cry cometh from Babylon, and great destruction from the

land of the Chaldeans:

[55] Because the LORD hath spoiled Babylon, and destroyed out of her the

great voice; when her waves do roar like great waters, a noise of their

voice is uttered:

[56] Because the spoiler is come upon her, even upon Babylon, and her mighty

men are taken, every one of their bows is broken: for the LORD God of

recompences shall surely requite.

[57] And I will make drunk her princes, and her wise men, her captains, and

her rulers, and her mighty men: and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and

not wake, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.

[58] Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The broad walls of Babylon shall be

utterly broken, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the people

shall labour in vain, and the folk in the fire, and they shall be weary.

59 (Jer 32:12; 36:4) The word which Jeremiah the prophet

commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah,

when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon

in the fourth year of his reign. Now Seraiah was a quartermaster.

60 (Isa 30:8; Jer 30:2-3) So Jeremiah wrote in a single scroll

all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words

that are written against Babylon.

61 Jeremiah said to Seraiah, "When you come to Babylon, then see

that you read aloud all these words,

62 (Jer 50:3; 50:13) and say, 'O Lord, You have spoken against

this place to cut it off, that no one will remain in it,

neither man nor beast, but that it shall be desolate forever.'

63 (Jer 19:10-11; Rev 18:21) It will be that when you have made

an end of reading this scroll that you will bind a stone to it,

and cast it into the midst of the Euphrates,

64 (Jer 51:58; Job 31:40) and say, 'Thus Babylon will sink

and not rise from the disaster that I will bring upon her,

and they will become weary.' "

Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

[59] The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of

Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah

into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. And this Seraiah was a quiet

prince.

[60] So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon,

even all these words that are written against Babylon.

[61] And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When thou comest to Babylon, and shalt

see, and shalt read all these words;

[62] Then shalt thou say, O LORD, thou hast spoken against this place, to

cut it off, that none shall remain in it, neither man nor beast, but that it

shall be desolate for ever.

[63] And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book, that

thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates:

[64] And thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise from

the evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be weary. Thus far are

the words of Jeremiah.

Jeremiah 52

The Fall of Jerusalem Reviewed

2Ki 24:18-20; 25:1-21; 2Ch 36:11-20; Jer 39:1-10

1 (2Ki 24:18; Jos 10:29) Zedekiah was 21 years old when he began to reign,

and he reigned 11 years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name

was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.

2 (1Ki 14:22) He did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord, according to all

that Jehoiakim had done.

3 (2Ch 36:13; Isa 3:4-5) Through the anger of the Lord this came to pass in

Jerusalem and Judah until He had cast them out from His presence.

Then Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

Jeremiah 52

[1] Zedekiah was one and twenty years old when he began to reign, and he

reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Hamutal the

daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.

[2] And he did that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD, according to all

that Jehoiakim had done.

[3] For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and

Judah, till he had cast them out from his presence, that Zedekiah rebelled

against the king of Babylon.

4 (Jer 39:1; Eze 24:1-2) In the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month,

in the tenth day of the month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came,

he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and laid siege to it;

they built a siege wall all around it.

5 So the city was besieged until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.

[4] And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month,

in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came, he

and all his army, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it, and built forts

against it round about.

[5] So the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah.

6 (Isa 3:1; 2Ki 25:3) In the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month,

the famine was so severe in the city that there was no bread for the people

of the land.

7 (2Ki 25:4; Jer 39:4-7) Then the city was breached, and all the men of war

fled and went out of the city by night by way of the gate between

the two walls, which was by the king's garden, though the Chaldeans

were all around the city, and they went by way of the Arabah.

8 (Jer 21:7; 32:4) But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king

and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho,

and all his army was scattered from him.

9 (Nu 13:21; Jer 39:5) Then they took the king and carried him up

to the king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath

where he passed sentence on him.

10 (Jer 22:30; 2Ki 25:7) The king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah

before his eyes; he also slew all the officials of Judah in Riblah.

11 (Eze 12:13) Then he put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and the king of Babylon

bound him in chains and carried him to Babylon and put him in prison

until the day of his death.

[6] And in the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the famine was

sore in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land.

[7] Then the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled, and went forth

out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which

was by the king's garden; (now the Chaldeans were by the city round about:)

and they went by the way of the plain.

[8] But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king, and overtook

Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho; and all his army was scattered from him.

[9] Then they took the king, and carried him up unto the king of Babylon to

Riblah in the land of Hamath; where he gave judgment upon him.

[10] And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes: he

slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah.

[11] Then he put out the eyes of Zedekiah; and the king of Babylon bound him

in chains, and carried him to Babylon, and put him in prison till the day of

his death.

The Temple Burned

12 (2Ki 25:8; Jer 39:9; 52:29) Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day

of the month, which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,

Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard who served the king of Babylon came into

Jerusalem,

13 (2Ch 36:19; Ps 79:1) and burned the house of the Lord,

and the king's house, and all the houses of Jerusalem.

Even all the large houses, he burned with fire.

14 (Ne 1:3; 2Ki 25:10) And all the army of the Chaldeans who were

with the captain of the guard broke down all the walls of Jerusalem

all around.

15 Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive

some of the poorest of the people, and the rest of the people

who remained in the city, and those who fell away, who fell

to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the multitude.

16 (2Ki 25:12) But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left

some of the poorest of the land to be vinedressers and farmers.

When Dr. Lee, my seminary professor, noticed that Benjie, our school

custodian, would be late in joining our lunch gathering, he quietly set aside

a plate of food for him. As my classmates and I talked, Dr. Lee also quietly

placed the last slice of rice cake on a dish for him-adding some grated

coconut as a delicious topping. This kind act of an eminent theologian was one

of many-and what I consider an overflow of Dr. Lee's faithfulness to God.

Twenty years later, the deep impression he made on me remains.

The apostle John had a dear friend who also left a deep impression on many

believers. They talked about Gaius as one who was faithful to God and the

Scriptures, continually walking in "the truth" (3 John 1:3). Gaius showed

hospitality to traveling preachers of the gospel, even though they were

strangers (v. 5). As a result, John said to him, "They have told the church

about your love" (v. 6). Gaius' faithfulness to God and to other believers in

Jesus helped further the gospel.

The impact my teacher had on me and the impact Gaius had in his day are

powerful reminders that we can leave an impact on others-one that God can use

in drawing them to Christ. As we walk faithfully with God, let's live and act

in a way that helps other believers walk faithfully with Him too.

Paul's instruction to the Colossian Church brings us back to God's

value system: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly."

When we give attention to the Word of God, we put ourselves in a position

to hear a higher truth the clamour of immediate demands

and the expectations of the world around us. We can experience peace

in the midst of struggle and rest in a restless environment.

God's Word is a powerful force for good in our lives - not merely

an attractive philosophy, but true power to overcome the pressures

of daily life.

Dwelling on the Word of God, and letting it indwell us, takes many forms.

Scripture memory, music, meditation, talking with others about the

goodness of God all help us keep our attention focused on Christ rather

than on the values of the world around us.

We can choose to listen to Christian radio or tapes. We can take time

daily for quiet meditation on his Word. We can commit the Word to memory

and draw on its power during the day. And as we listen to the voice

of the Spirit rather than the noise around us, we can enter into

his peace and live in communion with him.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month

and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days

of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

Judgment on Ammon

1 (Dt 23:3; 2Ch 20:1) Concerning the Ammonites:

Thus says the Lord:

Does Israel have no sons?

Or has he no heirs?

Why then does their king inherit Gad

and his people dwell in his cities?

2 (Jer 4:19; Dt 3:11) Therefore, surely the days are coming,

says the Lord,

when I will cause an alarm of war

to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites;

Then Israel will be heir

Judgment on Damascus

24 Damascus has become helpless;

she has turned away to flee,

and panic has seized her.

Arise, go up to Kedar,

and destroy the men of the East.

29 (Jer 6:25; 46:5) Their tents and their flocks they will take away.

They will carry away their curtains for themselves,

and all their vessels, and their camels;

and they will call out to one another,

"Terror is on every side!"

30 (Jer 25:9; 27:6) Flee, go far away,

For Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has taken counsel against you,

Judgment on Elam

34 (Ge 10:22; 14:1) The word of the Lord which came to Jeremiah

the prophet against Elam in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah

king of Judah, saying:

I will break the bow of Elam,

the chief of their might.

36Jer 49:32; Eze 5:10 Upon Elam I will bring the four winds

from the four quarters of heaven,

Judgment on Babylon

Jer 10:12-16

1 (Isa 13:1-3; 14:4) The word that the Lord spoke against Babylon

and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet:

2 (Isa 46:1; 21:9; Jer 51:44) Declare among the nations and publish,

and set up a standard;

do not conceal it, but say,

Babylon has been captured.

Bel has been humiliated.

Marduk has been broken in pieces;

her idols have been humiliated;

her images have been broken in pieces.

3 (Zep 1:3; Jer 50:9) For out of the north there comes up a nation

against her,

which will make her land desolate,

and no one will dwell in it.

They will wander away;

they will depart,

both man and beast.

4 (Hos 3:5; 1:11) In those days and at that time,

says the Lord,

the sons of Israel will come,

they and the children of Judah together.

They will go along weeping as they go,

and seek the Lord their God.

5 (Jer 32:40; Isa 55:3; Heb 8:6-10) They will ask for the way to Zion

with their faces in its direction.

They will come that they may join themselves to the Lord

in a perpetual covenant

David turned his difficulties into an opportunity to tell the world about his

faithful God. We can do the same. After all, we rely on the One who turns

darkness into light.

"I can't wait till I get big!" Marc, age 5, declared. "Then I do

We looked forward to that "magic age" - 16, 18, 21 - when we

would be adults: mature, able to make our own decisions.

We find, of course, that adulthood has its own share of

difficulties and conflicts. But even in our spiritual lives

we often long for a "magic moment" of maturity. As one woman

confessed, "Ever since I became a Christian, I've hoped I'd wake up

one morning to find myself mature."

But growth in the spiritual life comes gradually, like growth in

the physical world. In 2 Tim 2:16-17, Paul gives the young pastor

Timothy an important key to spiritual growing up - the Word of God.

The Word is "profitable" or "useful," Paul says, for "teaching" - that is,

for developing a right concept of God. Scripture offers "rebuke" when

we go wrong, "correction" to set us on the right path, and "training

in righteousness" so that we can grow in the image of Christ.

The purpose of Scripture's work in our lives, Paul emphasises,

is that we may be "perfect" - mature, equipped for the good things

God has for us to do. Such maturity does not come easily

or instantaneously, but it does come - sometimes imperceptibly -

as we submit our lives to the transforming power of God's Word.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month

and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days

of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

God Will Save Israel

Judgment on the Philistines

the prophet against the Philistines, before Pharaoh conquered Gaza.

See, waters rise up out of the north

and will be an overflowing flood,

Then the men shall cry out

of his strong horses,

Judgment on Moab

Isa 16:6-12

1 (Nu 32:3; 32:37-38) Concerning Moab:

Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel:

Woe to Nebo, for it is devastated.

Kiriathaim is humiliated and captured;

Misgab [Or the stronghold.] is humiliated and dismayed.

2 (Nu 32:37; Isa 16:14) There is no more praise for Moab;

in Heshbon they have devised evil against her:

"Come and let us cut it off from being a nation!"

Also you will be cut down, O Madmen.

The sword will pursue you.

3 (Isa 15:5; Jer 48:34) A sound of crying will be from Horonaim:

"Devastation and great destruction!"

4 "Moab is destroyed";

her little ones have caused a cry of distress to be heard;

they have heard a cry of destruction.

Therefore his taste remained in him,

says the Lord,

when I will send to him those who tip vessels,

and they will tip him over,

and will empty his vessels

and break his bottles.

13 (Jdg 11:24; Isa 45:16) Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh,

as the house of Israel was ashamed

of Bethel, their confidence.

14 (Ps 33:16; Isa 10:13) How do you say, "We are mighty

and strong men for the war"?

15 (Jer 46:18; 50:27) Moab has been devastated and gone up out of her cities,

and her chosen young men have also gone down to the slaughter,

Joy was apparent in their voices as the high school choir sang the Argentinian

song "El Cielo Canta Alegría." I was enjoying the performance but couldn't

understand the lyrics because I don't know Spanish. But it wasn't long until I

recognised a familiar word as the choir began to jubilantly declare, "Aleluya!"

Repeatedly, I heard "Aleluya," a declaration of praise to God that sounds

similar in most languages around the world. Eager to know the background

of the song, I went online after the concert and discovered the title

translates "Heaven Is Singing for Joy."

In a celebratory passage in Revelation 19, we're given a glimpse of the

reality expressed in that choral song-all of heaven rejoicing! In the apostle

John's vision of the future in the last book of the New Testament, he saw an

enormous gathering of people and angelic creatures in heaven declaring

gratitude to God. John wrote that the chorus of voices celebrated God's power

that overcame evil and injustice, His reign over the whole earth, and eternal

life with Him forever. Over and over again, all the inhabitants of heaven

declare "Hallelujah!" (vv. 1, 3, 4, 6), or "Praise God!"

One day people "from every tribe and language and people and nation" (5:9)

will declare God's glory. And with joy all our voices in every different

language will shout together, "Hallelujah!"

Many of us live out self-fulfilling prophecies. We believe

what we tell ourselves - or what we have been told by others:

We programme ourselves for spiritual failure as well.

"I just can't memorise Scripture," we say. "It comes and goes,

and I can't seem to get it to stay." Yet daily we memorise

volumes of information that is less significant than the

songs lyrics, advertising jingles.

The answer to the dilemma of negativism is not positive

thinking, but right thinking - biblical thinking, according

to what the Bible reveals of God's perspective. God says,

"You are worthwhile. You are valued. You are loved. I created you

just as you are, and whatever I call you to do,

I will give you the strength to do it.

The context of Phillipians 4:13 shows that Paul had learned

this important secret of spiritual strength. Paul had known

poverty and plenty, trouble and victory. But he also knew

he did not have to let circumstances determine his response to God's will.

We need not be controlled by the negative messages life throws in our paths

- even those self-defeating pronouncements we make to ourselves.

Rather, we can respond according to God's perspective, with the

conviction that God has given us strength we need to meet the

challenges we face.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month

and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days

of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

1) Jeremiah 41,42,43,44,45

Jeremiah 41

1 (Jer 40:8; Ps 41:9) In the seventh month Ishmael the son of Nethaniah,

the son of Elishama of the royal seed, and the officials of the king,

even ten men with him, came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah.

While they were eating bread together in Mizpah,

2 (2Ki 25:25; Jer 40:5) Ishmael the son of Nethaniah

and the ten men that were with him arose and struck Gedaliah

the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan with the sword and slew him,

whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.

3I shmael also slew all the Jews who were with him,

even with Gedaliah at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans who were found there,

and the men of war.

4 On the day after he had slain Gedaliah, when no one knew it,

5 (Dt 14:1; Jos 18:1) eighty men came from Shechem, from Shiloh,

and from Samaria, having their beards shaven, and their clothes torn,

and their bodies gashed, with offerings and incense in their hands

to bring them to the house of the Lord.

6 (2Sa 3:16; Jer 50:4) Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went out

from Mizpah to meet them, weeping all along as he went. As he met them,

he said to them, "Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam!"

7 (Ps 55:23; Isa 59:7) Yet it was so when they came into the midst

of the city that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, he and the men who were

with him, slew them and cast them into the midst of the cistern.

8 But ten men were found among those who said to Ishmael, "Do not slay us,

for we have stores in the field, of wheat and barley, and of oil and honey."

So he refrained and did not slay them among their brothers.

9 (Jdg 6:2; 1Sa 13:6) Now the cistern in which Ishmael had cast

all the dead bodies of the men, whom he had slain because of Gedaliah,

was what Asa the king had made because of Baasha the king of Israel.

And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with those who were slain.

10 (Jer 40:14; 40:7) Then Ishmael carried away captive all the rest

of the people who were in Mizpah, even the king's daughters,

and all the people who remained in Mizpah whom Nebuzaradan

the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.

And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive,

and departed to go over to the Ammonites.

11 (Jer 40:7-8; 40:13-16) But when Johanan the son of Kareah

and all the captains of the forces that were with him heard of all

the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done,

12 (2Sa 2:13; Ge 14:14-16) then they took all the men

and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and found him

by the great waters that are in Gibeon.

13 And when all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan

the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces that were with him,

they were glad.

14 So all the people whom Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah

turned about and returned, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah.

15 (Job 21:30; Pr 28:17) But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped

from Johanan with eight men and went to the Ammonites.

16 (Jer 42:8; 43:4-7) Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains

of the forces that were with him took all the remnant of the people

whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah,

after he had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, even mighty men of war,

and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back

from Gibeon.

17 (2Sa 19:37-38; Jer 42:14) And they departed and lived in the habitation

of Geruth Kimham, which is by Bethlehem, intending to go to Egypt,

18 (Jer 40:5; 42:16) because of the Chaldeans. For they were afraid of them,

because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam,

whom the king of Babylon made governor in the land.

Jeremiah 41

[1] Now it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of

Nethaniah the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, and the princes of the

king, even ten men with him, came unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah;

and there they did eat bread together in Mizpah.

[2] Then arose Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and the ten men that were with

him, and smote Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan with the sword,

and slew him, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.

[3] Ishmael also slew all the Jews that were with him, even with Gedaliah,

at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans that were found there, and the men of war.

[4] And it came to pass the second day after he had slain Gedaliah, and no

man knew it,

[5] That there came certain from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria,

even fourscore men, having their beards shaven, and their clothes rent, and

having cut themselves, with offerings and incense in their hand, to bring

them to the house of the LORD.

[6] And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went forth from Mizpah to meet them,

weeping all along as he went: and it came to pass, as he met them, he said

unto them, Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.

[7] And it was so, when they came into the midst of the city, that Ishmael

the son of Nethaniah slew them, and cast them into the midst of the pit, he,

and the men that were with him.

[8] But ten men were found among them that said unto Ishmael, Slay us not:

for we have treasures in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and

of honey. So he forbare, and slew them not among their brethren.

[9] Now the pit wherein Ishmael had cast all the dead bodies of the men,

whom he had slain because of Gedaliah, was it which Asa the king had made

for fear of Baasha king of Israel: and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled

it with them that were slain.

[10] Then Ishmael carried away captive all the residue of the people that

were in Mizpah, even the king's daughters, and all the people that remained

in Mizpah, whom Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had committed to

Gedaliah the son of Ahikam: and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them

away captive, and departed to go over to the Ammonites.

[11] But when Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces

that were with him, heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah

had done,

[17] And they departed, and dwelt in the habitation of Chimham, which is by

Bethlehem, to go to enter into Egypt,

[18] Because of the Chaldeans: for they were afraid of them, because Ishmael

the son of Nethaniah had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of

Babylon made governor in the land.

Jeremiah 42

Jeremiah Warns Against Going to Egypt

1 (Jer 6:13; 40:13) Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son

of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from

the least even to the greatest came near,

2 (Lev 26:22; Jer 36:7) and said to Jeremiah the prophet, "Please let our

supplication be accepted before you, and pray for us to the Lord your God,

even for all this remnant. For we are left but a few out of many, as your

eyes now see us.

3 (Ps 86:11; Pr 3:6) Pray that the Lord your God may show us the way

in which we should walk and the thing that we should do."

4 (Ex 8:29; 1Sa 3:17-18) Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them,

"I have heard you. I will pray to the Lord your God according to your words.

And it shall come to pass, that whatever the Lord will answer you,

I will declare it to you. I will keep nothing back from you."

5 (Ge 31:50; Jdg 11:10) Then they said to Jeremiah, "May the Lord be a true

and faithful witness against us, if we do not act according to all things

for which the Lord your God shall send you to us.

6 (Jer 7:23; Dt 5:29) Whether it is good or whether it is bad, we will

obey the voice of the Lord our God, to whom we send you so that it may

be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God."

7 (Ps 27:14) At the end of ten days the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.

8 (Jer 42:1) Then he called Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains

of the forces that were with him and all the people from the least even

to the greatest,

9 (2Ki 19:4; 19:6) and said to them, "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,

to whom you sent me to present your supplication before Him:

10 (Jer 24:6; 31:28) If you will still abide in this land, then I will build

you up and not pull you down, and I will plant you and not pluck you up;

for I will relent of the disaster that I have brought on you.

11 (Ro 8:31; Isa 43:5) Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon of whom

you are now afraid. Do not be afraid of him, says the Lord. For I am with

you to save you and to deliver you from his hand.

12 (Ne 1:11; Ps 106:45-46) I will show mercies to you so that he may have

mercy on you and cause you to return to your own land.

13 (Jer 44:16; Ex 5:2) "But if you say, 'We will not dwell in this land,'

so as not to obey the voice of the Lord your God,

14 (Jer 4:19; 41:17) saying, 'No, but we will go into the land of Egypt

where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet,

nor have hunger for bread, and there we will dwell,'

15 (Dt 17:16; Jer 44:12-14) now therefore hear the word of the Lord,

O remnant of Judah. Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel:

If you wholly set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to dwell there,

16 (Jer 44:27; Eze 11:8) then it shall come to pass that the sword

which you feared shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt

and the famine of which you were afraid shall follow close after you

there in Egypt. And there you shall die.

17 (Jer 42:22; 24:10) So it shall be with all the men who set their faces

to go into Egypt to sojourn there. They shall die by the sword, by famine,

and by pestilence. And none of them shall remain or escape from the disaster

that I will bring upon them.

18 (Jer 7:20; 18:16) For thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel:

As My anger and My fury have been poured out upon the inhabitants

of Jerusalem, so will My fury be poured out upon you when you go to Egypt.

And you will be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse,

and a reproach. And you shall see this place no more.

19 (Dt 17:16; Ne 9:26) "The Lord has said concerning you, O remnant of Judah,

Do not go into Egypt! Know certainly that I have admonished you this day.

20 For you have only deceived yourselves when you sent me to

the Lord your God, saying, 'Pray for us to the Lord our God. And according

to all that the Lord our God shall say, so declare to us, and we will do it.'

21 (Eze 2:7; Zec 7:11-12) Now I have this day declared it to you.

But you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God,

or anything for which He has sent me to you.

22 (Jer 42:17; Eze 6:11) Now therefore certainly know that you will die

by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, in the place wherever you desire

to go and to sojourn."

Jeremiah 42

[1] Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and

Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even unto

the greatest, came near,

[2] And said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we beseech thee, our

supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the LORD thy God,

even for all this remnant; (for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes

do behold us:)

[3] That the LORD thy God may shew us the way wherein we may walk, and the

thing that we may do.

[4] Then Jeremiah the prophet said unto them, I have heard you; behold, I

will pray unto the LORD your God according to your words; and it shall come

to pass, that whatsoever thing the LORD shall answer you, I will declare it

unto you; I will keep nothing back from you.

[5] Then they said to Jeremiah, The LORD be a true and faithful witness

between us, if we do not even according to all things for the which the LORD

thy God shall send thee to us.

[6] Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the

LORD our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us, when we

obey the voice of the LORD our God.

[7] And it came to pass after ten days, that the word of the LORD came unto

Jeremiah.

[8] Then called he Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the

forces which were with him, and all the people from the least even to the

greatest,

[9] And said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, unto whom ye

sent me to present your supplication before him;

[10] If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not

pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up: for I repent me

of the evil that I have done unto you.

[11] Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not

afraid of him, saith the LORD: for I am with you to save you, and to deliver

you from his hand.

[12] And I will shew mercies unto you, that he may have mercy upon you, and

cause you to return to your own land.

[13] But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land, neither obey the voice

of the LORD your God,

[14] Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see

no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and

there will we dwell:

[15] And now therefore hear the word of the LORD, ye remnant of Judah; Thus

saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; If ye wholly set your faces to

overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye were

afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die.

to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the

pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I

will bring upon them.

[18] For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As mine anger and

my fury hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem; so shall

my fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt: and ye

shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach;

and ye shall see this place no more.

[19] The LORD hath said concerning you, O ye remnant of Judah; Go ye not

into Egypt: know certainly that I have admonished you this day.

[20] For ye dissembled in your hearts, when ye sent me unto the LORD your

God, saying, Pray for us unto the LORD our God; and according unto all that

the LORD our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it.

[21] And now I have this day declared it to you; but ye have not obeyed the

voice of the LORD your God, nor any thing for the which he hath sent me unto

you.

[22] Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the

famine, and by the pestilence, in the place whither ye desire to go and to

sojourn.

Jeremiah 43

Jeremiah Taken to Egypt

1 (Jer 26:8; 42:22) When Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people

all these words of the Lord their God, with which the Lord their God had

sent him to them,

2 (2Ch 36:13; Isa 7:9) Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan

the son of Kareah, and all the proud men said to Jeremiah, "You speak falsely.

The Lord our God has not sent you to say, 'Do not go into Egypt to sojourn

there.'

3 (Jer 36:4; 36:10) But Baruch the son of Neriah sets you against us

to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put us to death

and carry us away captives into Babylon."

4 (Jer 42:5-6; 2Ch 25:16) So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains

of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord to dwell

in the land of Judah.

5 (Jer 40:11-12) But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains

of the forces took all the remnant of Judah who had returned

from all nations wherever they had been driven to dwell in the land of Judah,

6 (Jer 39:10; 40:7) even men, and women, and children,

and the king's daughters, and every person that Nebuzaradan the captain

of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,

and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah.

7 (Jer 2:16; 44:1) So they came into the land of Egypt

because they did not obey the voice of the Lord.

Thus they entered as far as Tahpanhes.

8 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying:

9 Take some large stones in your hand and hide them in the clay

in the brick kiln which is at the entrance of Pharaoh's house in Tahpanhes,

in the sight of the men of Judah,

10 (Ps 18:11; 27:5) and say to them, Thus says the Lord of Hosts,

the God of Israel: I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon,

My servant, and will set his throne upon these stones that I have hid;

and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them.

11 (Jer 15:2; 44:13) When he comes, he shall ravage the land of Egypt

and deliver whoever is meant for death to death, and whoever is meant

for captivity to captivity, and whoever is meant for the sword to the sword.

12 (Jer 46:25; Eze 30:13) I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods

of Egypt and he shall burn them and carry them away captives. And he shall

array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd puts on his garment,

and he shall depart from there in peace.

13 He shall also break the images of Heliopolis that is in the land of Egypt,

and the houses of the gods of the Egyptians he shall burn with fire.

Jeremiah 43

[1] And it came to pass, that when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking unto

all the people all the words of the LORD their God, for which the LORD their

God had sent him to them, even all these words,

[2] Then spake Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah,

and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: the LORD

our God hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to sojourn there:

[3] But Baruch the son of Neriah setteth thee on against us, for to deliver

us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put us to death, and

carry us away captives into Babylon.

[4] So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and

all the people, obeyed not the voice of the LORD, to dwell in the land of

Judah.

[5] But Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, took

all the remnant of Judah, that were returned from all nations, whither they

had been driven, to dwell in the land of Judah;

[6] Even men, and women, and children, and the king's daughters, and every

person that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the

son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the

son of Neriah.

[7] So they came into the land of Egypt: for they obeyed not the voice of

the LORD: thus came they even to Tahpanhes.

[8] Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,

[9] Take great stones in thine hand, and hide them in the clay in the

brickkiln, which is at the entry of Pharaoh's house in Tahpanhes, in the

sight of the men of Judah;

[10] And say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel;

Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant,

and will set his throne upon these stones that I have hid; and he shall

spread his royal pavilion over them.

[11] And when he cometh, he shall smite the land of Egypt, and deliver such

as are for death to death; and such as are for captivity to captivity; and

such as are for the sword to the sword.

[12] And I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt; and he

shall burn them, and carry them away captives: and he shall array himself

with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd putteth on his garment; and he shall

go forth from thence in peace.

[13] He shall break also the images of Beth-shemesh, that is in the land of

Egypt; and the houses of the gods of the Egyptians shall he burn with fire.

Jeremiah 44

Idolatry Leads to Judgment

1 (Jer 46:14; Ex 14:2; Isa 11:11) The word that came to Jeremiah concerning

all the Jews which dwell in the land of Egypt, who dwell at Migdol,

and Tahpanhes, and Memphis, and in the country of Pathros,

[Or the stronghold.] saying,

2 (Isa 6:11; Jer 9:11) Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel:

You have seen all the calamity that I have brought upon Jerusalem

and upon all the cities of Judah. Look at them; today they are a desolation,

and no man dwells in them,

3 (Dt 13:6; 29:26) because of their wickedness, which they have committed

to provoke Me to anger, in that they went to burn incense

and to serve other gods, whom they did not know;

they nor you nor your fathers.

4 (Jer 7:13; 7:25) However, I sent to you all My servants the prophets,

rising early and sending them, saying, "Oh, do not do this abominable thing

that I hate."

5 But they did not listen nor incline their ear to turn from their wickedness,

not to burn incense to other gods.

6 (Isa 51:17; 51:20) Therefore My fury and My anger was poured out

and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem;

and they are ruined and desolate, as it is this day.

7 (Nu 16:38; Jer 51:22) Now thus says the Lord God of Hosts,

the God of Israel: Why are you committing this great evil against your souls,

to cut off from you man and woman, child and infant, out of Judah,

leaving you no one to remain,

8 (Jer 42:18; 25:6-7) provoking Me to wrath with the works of your hands,

burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you have gone

to dwell, so that you might cut yourselves off

and become a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?

9 (Jer 7:17-18) Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers,

and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives,

and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives,

which they have committed in the land of Judah

and in the streets of Jerusalem?

10 (Pr 28:14; Jer 8:12) They are not humbled even to this day,

nor have they feared, nor have they walked in My law

and My statutes that I set before you and before your fathers.

11 (Jer 21:10; Am 9:4) Therefore thus says the Lord of Hosts,

the God of Israel: I will set My face against you for disaster,

and to cut off all Judah.

12 (Jer 42:15-18; Isa 65:15) I will take the remnant of Judah who have set

their faces to go into the land of Egypt to sojourn there,

and they all will be consumed and fall in the land of Egypt.

They will even be consumed by the sword and by the famine.

They will die, from the least even to the greatest, by the sword

and by the famine; and they will be an execration, and an astonishment,

and a curse, and a reproach.

13 (Jer 11:22; 43:11) For I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt,

as I have punished Jerusalem; by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.

14 (Jer 22:26-27; Ro 9:27) So none of the remnant of Judah who have gone

into the land of Egypt to sojourn there will escape or remain,

with the result that they return into the land of Judah

to which they have a desire to return to dwell there.

For no one shall return except those who escape.

15 (Pr 11:21; Isa 1:5) Then all the men who knew that their wives

had burned incense to other gods and all the women that stood by,

a great multitude, even all the people who lived in the land of Egypt,

in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying:

16 "As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord,

we will not listen to you.

17 (Ne 9:34; Jer 7:18) But we will certainly do whatever we have vowed,

to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings

to her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings,

and our officials, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem.

For then we had plenty of food, and were well off, and saw no disaster.

18 (Mal 3:13-15; Nu 11:5-6) But since we left off burning incense

to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her,

we have been in want of all things and have been consumed by the sword

and by the famine."

19 (Jer 7:18; 44:15) The women also said, "When we burned incense

to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings to her,

did we make her cakes to worship her and pour out drink offerings

to her without our husbands?"

[1] The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews which dwell in

the land of Egypt, which dwell at Migdol, and at Tahpanhes, and at Noph, and

in the country of Pathros, saying,

[2] Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Ye have seen all the

evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah;

and, behold, this day they are a desolation, and no man dwelleth therein,

[3] Because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to

anger, in that they went to burn incense, and to serve other gods, whom they

knew not, neither they, ye, nor your fathers.

[4] Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and

sending them, saying, Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate.

[5] But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear to turn from their

wickedness, to burn no incense unto other gods.

[6] Wherefore my fury and mine anger was poured forth, and was kindled in

the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and

desolate, as at this day.

[7] Therefore now this saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel;

Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you

man and woman, child and suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to

remain;

[8] In that ye provoke me unto wrath with the works of your hands, burning

incense unto other gods in the land of Egypt, whither ye be gone to dwell,

that ye might cut yourselves off, and that ye might be a curse and a

[9] Have ye forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of

[10] They are not humbled even unto this day, neither have they feared, nor

walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your

Calamity for the Jews

20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, to the men and to the women,

and to all the people who had given him such an answer:

in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you,

and your fathers, your kings, and your officials,

and the people of the land, did not the Lord remember them

and did they not come into His mind?

because of the evil of your deeds and because of the abominations

which you have committed. Therefore your land is a desolation,

and an astonishment, and a curse, without an inhabitant, as it is this day.

and because you have sinned against the Lord and have not obeyed

the voice of the Lord, nor walked in His law, nor in His statutes,

When the basketball team from Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) took to the

floor for the college basketball tournament, the fans in the stands cheered

for the underdog squad. The team hadn't been expected to make it past the

first round, but they did. And now they heard their fight song blaring from

the stands, though they didn't have a band with them. The University of Dayton

band had learned FDU's song minutes before the game. The band could have

simply played songs they knew, but they chose to learn the song to help

another school and another team.

This band's actions can be seen to symbolize the unity described in

Philippians. Paul told the early church at Philippi-and us today-to live in

unity, or of "one mind" (Philippians 2:2), particularly because they were

united in Christ. To do this, the apostle encouraged them to give up selfish

ambition and consider the interests of others before their own.

Valuing others above ourselves may not come naturally, but it's how we can

imitate Christ. Paul wrote,

"Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of

mind let each esteem other better than themselves" (v. 3). Instead of focusing

only on ourselves, it’s better to humbly look

"to the interests of . . . others" (v. 4).

How can we support others? By carefully considering their interests whether

learning their fight songs or providing whatever they might need.

Is 41:10

Beth had the same recurring nightmare: she was running along a cliff,

then she slipped, and fell headlong, into a bottomless ravine.

Falling, without control, without end, falling, falling, falling...

Beth's dream may be one many of us identify with. The sense

of losing control can be nightmarish, and we may fear falling

without end, without remedy. Financial failure may be the chasm

that we face, or professional disgrace. Personal relationships

may go out of control, and we look into a never-ending

ravine of pain and misunderstanding

But God says, "Don't be afraid; I am holding you up."

Like the father who helps his child learn to swim,

God holds us above the water. We may not feel his hands;

indeed, we may suspect that he lets us go just so we can

do it on our own. But he promises that he doesn't let go.

"I am with you." he declares. "I give you strength

and hold you up."

God's promise never to let go takes on new meaning

in a world where relationships are temporary and life is

uncertain. We do not need to fear, for he is with us.

We can relax and stop striving, for he is our God.

His strength becomes ours; amid all our sin and rebellion,

he undergirds us with his righteousness. We cannot fall,

for he holds us firm.

church was converted into Moncton's 1st mosque. The University of Moncton

also has a Muslim student association hosting prayer services, fellowship

getherings, and outreaches on campus.

Fredericton also has one mosque and a Muslim student association serving the

campuses of the University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University.

Fredericton's Muslim population consists in 2014 of about 50 families,

and between 300 to 400 university students.

Saint John is home to the 1st Muslim Association for the province,

which also helped foster the Islamic associations of Fredericton and Moncton.

a 'musalla', or prayer location that is not officially structured as a mosque,

has been established in the Uptown area with the intention of seeing it grow

into a 2nd official place of Muslim worship. Demand for this new location has

been primarily for university students moving into the area.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month

and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days

of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 12 They were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other,

"What does this mean?"

erminus: A Disappointing Detour

Terminus is often considered a low point in Doctor Who history. While it starts with promise, the story quickly devolves into a claustrophobic and uninteresting tale. The characters are poorly developed, and the plot is both convoluted and predictable.

The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth

in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying,

"Where did this Man get this? What is this wisdom that is given Him,

that even miracles are done by His hands?

the Son of Mary and the brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon?

Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him.

Jon was installed as full professor in a prestigious college. His older

brother David was pleased, but, as brothers do, he couldn't resist teasing

Jon how he'd wrestled him to the ground when they were boys. Jon had gone

far in life, but he'd always be David's little brother.

It's hard to impress family-even if you're the Messiah. Jesus had grown up

among the people of Nazareth, so they struggled to believe He was special.

Yet they were amazed by Him. "What are these remarkable miracles he is

performing? Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary's son . . . ?"

(Mark 6:2-3). Jesus noted, "A prophet is not without honour except in his own

town, among his relatives and in his own home" (v. 4). These people knew Jesus

well, but they couldn't believe He was the Son of God.

Perhaps you were raised in a godly home. Your earliest memories include going

to church and singing hymns. Jesus has always felt like family. If you believe

and follow Him, Jesus is family. He "is not ashamed to call [us] brothers

and sisters" (Hebrews 2:11). Jesus is our older brother in the family of God

(Romans 8:29)! This is a great privilege, but our closeness might make Him

seem common. Just because someone is family doesn't mean they're not special.

Aren't you glad Jesus is family, and more than family? May He become more

personal, and more special, as you follow Him today.

In the Book of Daniel, 3 young men provide one of the world's best-known

Bible stories. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, three of the finest young

men of Israel, were taken into capitivity to Babylon. There King

Nebuchadnezzar, filled with his own importance, commanded that

everyone bow down and worship his image.

When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to worship anyone

except the One True god, they were cast into Nebuchadnezzar's

furnace of fire.

Is 43:2 brings their experience into focus for us. There the Lord says,

"When you pass through the fire ... when you walk through the water ..."

Not if, but when. If we are committed to serving and honouring the Lord,

at some point we will be faced with "passing through the fire" for hm.

We may not face a physical furnace, but we may face the fires of

persecution, anger, hostility or suffering. And God says:

"I will be with you."

When the three young Israelites stepped into the king's furnace, all

the people looked and saw, not three, but four men in the fire, their

bonds burned away, walking freely among the flames. They did not

escape the fate decreed for them. But the Lord was with them in

the fire, as surely as he has promised to be with us in the flood

and the fire, as surely as he has promised to be with us in the

flood and fire tht life brings to us. The promise of god remains:

"I will be with you; the waters will not overflow, nor will the

flames burn you."

Moncton, followed by Fredericton and Saint John, each have a growing Muslim

population in New Brunswick, In 2007, the building that was formerly a Baptist

church was converted into Moncton's 1st mosque. The University of Moncton

also has a Muslim student association hosting prayer services, fellowship

getherings, and outreaches on campus.

Fredericton also has one mosque and a Muslim student association serving the

campuses of the University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University.

Fredericton's Muslim population consists in 2014 of about 50 families,

and between 300 to 400 university students.

Saint John is home to the 1st Muslim Association for the province,

which also helped foster the Islamic associations of Fredericton and Moncton.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month

and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days

of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that

usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,

of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be

decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the

distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of

Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",

which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you

know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions

in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about

unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such

movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three

decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim

relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
