2 Kings 15
[17] In the nine and thirtieth year of Azariah king of Judah began Menahem
the son of Gadi to reign over Israel, and reigned ten years in Samaria.
[18] And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed
not all his days from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made
Israel to sin.
[19] And Pul the king of Assyria came against the land: and Menahem gave
Pul a thousand talents of silver, that his hand might be with him to confirm
the kingdom in his hand.
[20] And Menahem exacted the money of Israel, even of all the mighty men of
wealth, of each man fifty shekels of silver, to give to the king of Assyria.
So the king of Assyria turned back, and stayed not there in the land.
[21] And the rest of the acts of Menahem, and all that he did, are they not
written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
[22] And Menahem slept with his fathers; and Pekahiah his son reigned in his
stead.
Pekahiah, King of Israel
23 In the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekahiah the son of Menahem

of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin.

not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
25 But Pekah son of Remaliah, his officer, conspired against him
and struck him in Samaria, in the palace of the king's house, with Argob,
Arieh, and fifty men of the Gileadites with him. He killed him a

26 Now the rest of the deeds of Pekahiah and all that he did, behold,
they are written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel.

and smote him in Samaria, in the palace of the king's house, with Argob and
Arieh, and with him fifty men of the Gileadites: and he killed him, and

and all the land of Naphtali, and then exiled them to Assyria.
30 Then Hoshea son of Elah made a conspiracy against Pekah son of Remaliah
and struck and killed him. Then he reigned in his place in the twentieth
year of Jotham son of Uzziah.
31 The rest of the deeds of Pekah and all that he did, behold,
they are written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel.

with his fathers in the burial field belonging to the kings because they said,
"He is a leper." And Jotham his son ruled in his place.

The Holy Grail

Matthew 26:20-30
20 (Mk 14:17-21; Jn 13:21) When evening came, He sat down with the twelve.
21 (Jn 13:21; 6:70-71) And as they were eating, He said,
"Truly I say to you, one of you will betray Me."
22 They were very sorrowful, and each of them began saying to Him,
"Lord, is it I?"
23 (Jn 13:18; Ps 41:9) He answered and said, "He who has dipped his hand
with Me in the dish will betray Me.
24 (Mk 9:12; Lk 24:46) The Son of Man goes as it is written of Him,
but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed!
It would have been good for that man if he had not been born."

The Lord's Supper

26 (Mt 14:19) As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it
and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said,
"Take and eat. This is My body."
27 Then He took the cup, and after He gave thanks, He gave it to them, saying,
"Drink of it, all of you.
28 (Mt 20:28; Ex 24:7-8) For this is My blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
29 (Mt 13:43; Mk 14:25) I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit
of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you
in My Father's kingdom."
30 (Mt 21:1; Lk 22:39) And when they had sung a hymn,
they went out to the Mount of Olives.
[26] And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake

[30] And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
For centuries, people have been fascinated by the Holy Grail - the cup Jesus
drank from at the Last Supper. The legends surrounding King Arthur and the
knights of the Round Table detail their obsession over the search for the cup.
They believed it had magical powers. In film, Indiana Jones and his father,
Henry, fulfilled Henry's lifelong pursuit of the Grail.
While this makes for fascinating storytelling, the truth is much more s
traightforward. The cup itself has no special powers. The real power is found
in what it represents. Matthew describes the scene in the upper room the night
before Jesus went to the cross: "Then [Jesus] took a cup, and when he had
given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, 'Drink from it, all of you. This is
my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of
sins' " (26:27-28). The cup is a picture of the blood that Jesus would
shed on our behalf.
John the Baptist introduced Jesus as "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin
of the world" (John 1:29). Hebrews 9:22 tells us, “Without the shedding of
blood there is no forgiveness." And Paul wrote that Christ himself is "our
Passover lamb" (1 Corinthians 5:7). Jesus paid the penalty for our sins.
How thankful we are for the shed blood of our Savior, the Lamb!

Romans 8:15
'For you have not received the spirit of slavery again to fear. But you have
received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, "Abba, Father." '
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have
received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
"I've always been a Daddy's girl," Sandi said proudly, and her relationship
with her father proved it. She was never spoiled, but even as a grown woman,
Sandi maintained a closeness with her father, sharing intimately with him the
important issues of her life. And just her use of the name "Daddy" indicated
that he was, indeed a warm, approachable, affectionate man.
Many people are not so fortunate. Some fathers are stern and harsh;
others absent or uncaring, some even abusive. Few have the king of father
who presents a picture of the loving fatherhood of God.
But whatever our concept of fatherhood, God makes clear that he is everything
we always wanted our fathers to be - loving, forgiving, approachable,
totally accepting of us as we are, encouraging us to become all he has
created us to be.
In Romans 8, Paul calls God our "Abba Father". The Aramaic word for Father,
Abba, is an intimate term that might well be translated, Daddy.
God is our "Daddy," our "Abba" - not a distant, stern patriarch ready
to strike us down at the first sign of transgression, but a gentle,
loving Father who longs for us to climb into his lap and let him comfort us.
When we commit ourselves to Christ, Paul indicates, we do not receive a
"spirit of bondage to fear" but a "spirit of adoption." We are not called
to respond to God out of fear, but out of love and reverence.
We can relax and enjoy his presence, for we are his children,
and he is our loving Daddy.

Amos 9
Destruction of the Sanctuary
1 (Ps 68:21; Am 3:14) I saw the Lord standing upon the altar, and He said:

so that the thresholds shake;
break them off onto the heads of all of them.
Those who remain I will slay with the sword.
Not one of them will get away;
not one fugitive will survive.

Restoration of the Davidic Kingdom

2 He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned 52 years
in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jekoliah from Jerusalem.
3 He did what was right in the sight of the Lord,
according to all that his father Amaziah had done.
4 But the high places were not removed. The people continued sacrificing
and making offerings on the high places.
5 (Lev 13:46; Nu 12:14) The Lord afflicted the king, and he was leprous
until the day of his death. He lived in a separate house. Jotham the king's
son was in charge of the house, judging the people of the land.

Uzziah, King of Judah
2 Ki 14:21-22; 15:1-7
1 (2Ch 22:1) And all the people of Judah took Uzziah
[Also known as Azariah in 2Ki 15.] and made him king in the place
of his father Amaziah when he was sixteen years old.
2 He built Eloth and restored it to Judah
after Amaziah the king slept with his fathers.
3 (2Ki 15:2-3) Uzziah was sixteen years old when he began to reign,
and he was king in Jerusalem for fifty-two years. The name of his mother
was Jekoliah from Jerusalem.
4 And he did what was correct in the eyes of the Lord as everything
his father Amaziah had done.
5 (2Ch 24:2; Da 1:17) And he sought after God in the days of Zechariah,
the one who instructed him in the fear of the Lord. And in the days
that he sought after the Lord, God caused him to succeed.
6 (Isa 14:29) He went out to make war with the Philistines, and he broke
through the walls at Gath and Jabneh and Ashdod. Then he built cities
in Ashdod and among the Philistines.
7 (2Ch 21:16) And God brought him aid against the Philistines and Arabians,
those living in Gur Baal, and the Meunites.
8 (Ge 19:38; 2Sa 8:2) And the Ammonites gave a gift to Uzziah,
and his name spread even to the border of Egypt because he became

at the Valley Gate, and at the corner buttress; and he fortified them.
10 (Ge 26:18-21) And he built towers in the wilderness, and he dug out
many cisterns because he had a large amount of livestock,
both in the lowland Shephelah and in the plain. He also had workers
in the fields and vineyards in the hills and fertile orchards,
for he loved agriculture.
11 And Uzziah had an army prepared for battle, those who went out
for war as companies in the number of their divisions
by the appointment of Jeiel the scribe, and Maaseiah the officer,
and Hananiah a commander of the king.
12 The total number of chief officers of the mighty men of valor
was two thousand six hundred.
13 And under their hand was a mighty army of 307500 who were able to go
to battle as a strong army and to help the king against his enemies.
14 And Uzziah prepared for the entire army shields, long spears,
helmets, scale armor, bows, and slings for stones.
15 In Jerusalem he made war machines by skilled men to be placed
on towers and corners to shoot arrows and large stones.
And his name went out for a great distance.
He received great help until he was even more powerful.
[1] Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old,
and made him king in the room of his father Amaziah.

bands, according to the number of their account by the hand of Jeiel the
scribe and Maaseiah the ruler, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the
king's captains.
[12] The whole number of the chief of the fathers of the mighty men of
valour were two thousand and six hundred.
[13] And under their hand was an army, three hundred thousand and seven
thousand and five hundred, that made war with mighty power, to help the
king against the enemy.
[14] And Uzziah prepared for them throughout all the host shields, and
spears, and helmets, and habergeons, and bows, and slings to cast stones.
[15] And he made in Jerusalem engines, invented by cunning men, to be on the
towers and upon the bulwarks, to shoot arrows and great stones withal. And
his name spread far abroad; for he was marvellously helped,
till he was strong.
Uzziah's Punishment for Pride
16 (2Ch 25:19; Dt 8:14) And as he grew strong, his heart grew more proud,
leading to his destruction. Then he acted unfaithfully against the Lord
his God, for he entered the temple main hall of the Lord to burn
incense on the altar.
17 (1Ch 6:10) But Azariah the priest entered in after him,
and with him were eighty priests of the Lord-men of valor.
18 (Ex 30:7-8; Nu 18:7) And they stood against King Uzziah and said to him,
"It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord for it is
for the priests, the sons of Aaron, who are consecrated to burn incense.
Leave from the sanctuary because you have been unfaithful, and there
will be no honor for you from the Lord God."
19 (Nu 12:10) Then Uzziah was enraged, and in his hand was a censer
for incense. And when he became angry with the priests, leprosy appeared
on his forehead in front of the priests in the house of the Lord,
near the altar of incense.
20 Then Azariah the head priest and all the priests turned to him,
and he had leprosy on his forehead; and they hastened to remove
him from there, and he also hurried to leave because the Lord had struck him.
21 (Lev 13:46) So King Uzziah had leprosy until the day of his death.
He dwelt in a separate house with his unclean disease
because he was cut off from the house of the Lord.
Then Jotham his son was over the house of the king,
and he governed the people of the land.
[16] But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction:
for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the
LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.
[17] And Azariah the priest went in after him, and with him fourscore
priests of the LORD, that were valiant men:
[18] And they withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth
not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests
the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the
sanctuary; for thou hast trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honour
from the LORD God.
[19] Then Uzziah was wroth, and had a censer in his hand to burn incense:
and while he was wroth with the priests, the leprosy even rose up in his
forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, from beside the
incense altar.
[20] And Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon him,
and, behold, he was leprous in his forehead, and they thrust him out from
thence; yea, himself hasted also to go out, because the LORD had smitten
him.
[21] And Uzziah the king was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in
a several house, being a leper; for he was cut off from the house of the
LORD: and Jotham his son was over the king's house, judging the people of
the land.

Shallum, King of Israel

and struck Shallum son of Jabesh in Samaria and killed him.
Then Menahem reigned in his place.

16 Then Menahem struck Tiphsah and all who were in it, and the territories
around Tirzah. Because they did not open up the city to him, he attacked it.

Menahem, King of Israel
17 In the thirty-ninth year of Azariah king of Judah, Menahem son of Gadi
became king over Israel for ten years in Samaria.
18 He did evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not turn aside all his days
from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin.
19 Pul the king of Assyria came against the land, and Menahem gave Pul
a thousand talents of silver, that he might help him strengthen
his control of the kingdom.
20 Menahem exacted the money from Israel, from all the very wealthy men,
fifty shekels of silver each, to give to the king of Assyria.
So the king of Assyria left and did not stay there in the land.
21 The rest of the deeds of Menahem, and all that he did, are they not written

Plague of Locusts

of the land, I said, "O Lord God, please forgive.

Fire

Plumb Line

The Priest Tries to Banish Amos
10 (Jer 38:4; 26:8-11) Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent a message
to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you
at the very center of the house of Israel. The country cannot endure
all his words.
11 For this is what Amos said:
'Jeroboam will die by the sword,
and Israel will surely be exiled
away from its land.' "
12 (Mt 8:34; 1Sa 9:9) So Amaziah said to Amos, "O seer, go,
flee back to the land of Judah.
Earn your sustenance there, and prophesy there.
13 (Am 2:12; 1Ki 12:29) But do not prophesy any more at Bethel,
for it is the king's sanctuary and a royal temple."
14 (2Ki 2:5; 4:38) But Amos answered Amaziah: "I am no prophet,
and I am no prophet's disciple. Rather, I am a herdsman
and a dresser of sycamore trees.

surely be led away captive out of their own land.
[12] Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the
land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
[13] But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king's
chapel, and it is the king's court.
[14] Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I
a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:

Amos 8
Basket of Fruit

Then the Lord said to me, "The end has come upon My people Israel.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,
"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even on My menservants and maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below:
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,

"My name is Kam. I'm 29 years of age, and I grew up Sikh. As a teenager,
I struggled with depression, brokenness, and addiction to
cannabis. I didn't know how to stop or how to get help.
Then a friend invited me to church. As I spent time with Christians
and heard the message of the Gospel, I experienced the
love of Jesus Christ, and it was like nothing I'd known before.
One night I had a dream where I saw Him - a figure surrounded by
light who I knew was Jesus, the light of the world.
As I began to understand the gospel message, I encountered a reassuring and

to my sin problem, and I gave my life to Christ.
Slowly, God began to heal my broken heart and my addiction.
Nine years have passed, and I am a devoted husband and a father
to two beautiful boys. I grow deeper in love with Jesus each day.
I ask you to continue praying with me, and others around the world, for Sikhs.
God is the only one who can draw people to Himself. He works in and through
the prayers of His people. I want Sikhs to know the freedom
and healing that is only available through Jesus Christ."

The Wisdom of Solomon

and I bore a child with her in the house.
18 Three days after I gave birth, she also had a child, and we were together.
There was no one else with us in the house, only the two of us were
in the house.
19 "Then this woman's child died during the night
because she rolled over on it.
20 She got up at midnight and took my son from beside me while your servant
slept and laid him at her bosom and laid her dead child at my bosom.
21 When I rose in the morning to feed my child, it was dead.
But when I looked closely in the morning light, I recognized
that it was not my son whom I bore."

24 So the king said, "Bring me a sword." And they brought a sword
before the king.
25 The king said, "Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one

As a child, I brought home a report card with all S's, which stood for
Satisfactory. My sister, who was five years older than me, had a mixture
of A’s and B’s. I thought our report cards proved I was smarter because I
had what I thought was the equivalent of all A's. My older brother then
proceeded to offer us a test. He went to my parents' bookshelf and pulled out
a book. He asked me to read a passage. I stumbled, only recognizing a few
words. My sister read the passage flawlessly. My brother declared
her the smartest.
Lesson learned. His test proved to be wise.
The people in Israel learned a lesson on wisdom from King Solomon. Two women
had delivered babies. One baby died when his mother accidentally "lay on him"
(1 Kings 3:19). This mother then tried to claim the living baby as her own.
The women went to Solomon to ask who should keep the baby. When he heard the
complaint, he ordered that the living baby be cut in two so both women could
have a half of the child (v. 25).
The woman who was not the mother agreed to this order, but the true mother
said, "Give her the living baby! Don't kill him!" (v. 26). When she spoke up
to save the child, Solomon ruled that she was the mother and said to give her
the baby (v. 27). Solomon's God-given wisdom was on full display.
As God helps us, our actions can show others the true wisdom
that comes from Him too (Proverbs 2:6).

Romans 8:38-39

Separation is a fact of human life. Relationships disintegrate,
children grow up, loved ones die, husbands and wives divorce,
friends changes and drift apart. We may resist change and separation,
but we must deal with them nevertheless.
Separation sometimes is a natural result of growth and development;
sometimes it is a violent, cataclysmic shaking of an individual's life.
2 lifelong friends go separate ways to college or into future careers;
a church splits over doctrinal differences; a wife finds out a hidden
secret in her husband's past.
But with God, there is no separation, no death, no breaking of vows,
no growing beyond the relationship. Nothing, says Paul, can separate
us from the love of God. A skeleton in my closet, once revealed, may
cost me the trust of those I thought were my friends. But God knows
all my past, all my sin; he forgives, and it cannot separate me from him.
My present personal struggles may cause trouble in my job and result in
the loss of that income, but God understands what I'm going through,
and even when I'm angry at him, he can take it without drawing away
or striking back. My present problems cannot separate me from the Lord.
And God knows, too, the plan he has established for my future. I cannot
walk away from him, grow beyond my need for him, or outrun him into
tomorrow.
She may separate me from my awareness of God's presence in my life,
but it cannot set me beyond his reach. There is no power that is greater
than God's love, and no place I can go that will separate me
from that love.
Application

Amos 3
First Pronouncement of Punishment
1 (Am 2:10; Jer 8:3) Hear this word that the Lord has spoken against you,

of all the families of the earth;
therefore I will punish you
for all your iniquities.

Third Pronouncement of Punishment
1 (Eze 19:1; Jer 7:29) Hear this word which I take up as a dirge against you,
O house of Israel:
2 (Jer 14:17) Fallen, no more to rise
is maiden Israel;
forsaken on her land,
with no one to raise her up.
3 For thus says the Lord God:
The city that went out with a thousand
will be left with a hundred,
and the one that went out with a hundred
will be left with ten for the house of Israel.
4 (Isa 55:3; 2Ch 15:2) Indeed, thus says the Lord to the house of Israel:
Seek Me and live!
5 (Am 4:4; 8:14) But do not seek Bethel,

or cross over to Beersheba;

of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth
for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth:
The LORD is his name:
[9] That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled
shall come against the fortress.
[10] They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that
speaketh uprightly.
[11] Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take
from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall
not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards,
but ye shall not drink wine of them.
[12] For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they
afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the
gate from their right.
[13] Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an
evil time.
[14] Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD,
the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
[15] Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate:
it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of
Joseph.
[16] Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord, saith thus; Wailing
shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways,
Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning,
and such as are skillful of lamentation to wailing.
[17] And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through thee,
saith the LORD.
The Day of the Lord Is Darkness

Amos 6
Woe to the Complacent

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 : 17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,
"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even on My menservants and maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below:
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
21 And whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."[a]

intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 for kings,
and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable
life in all godliness and honesty. 3For this is good and acceptable
in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 who will have all men to be saved,
and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
II) Pray for the churches of the province, that they would be lighthouses
beaming forth the illuminating truth of God's Word.
III) Pray that the Lord would use the Finding the Hope Campaign and booklet
to turn many hearts to Jesus
Conclusion:
Pray to the Lord and and pray to honour him in the work you do in gladness
and understand his mercies.
Pray to the Lord: "Dear God, I've gone so long in this dark time.
There is no joy. Please help me to dance again."

Jonah 4
Jonah's Anger and the Lord's Compassion
1 Now this greatly displeased Jonah, and he became angry.
2 He prayed to the Lord and said, "O Lord! Is this not
what I said while I was still in my own land?
This is the reason that I fled before to Tarshish,
because I knew that You are a gracious God and merciful,
slow to anger, abundant in faithfulness, and ready to relent from punishment.
3 Therefore, Lord, take my life from me,
for it is better for me to die than to live."
4 Then the Lord said, "Is it right for you to be angry?"
5 So Jonah went out of the city and sat down east of the city
and made for himself a booth there. He sat under it in the shade,
waiting to see what would happen to the city.
6 Then the Lord God appointed a plant, and it grew up over Jonah to provide
shade over his head, to provide comfort from his grief.
And Jonah was very happy about the plant.
7 But at dawn the next day, God appointed a worm to attack the plant
so that it withered.
8 When the sun rose, God appointed a scorching east wind,
and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah so that he became
faint and asked that he might die.
He said, "It is better for me to die than to live."
9 Then God said to Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?"
And Jonah replied, "It is right for me to be angry, even to death."
10 The Lord said, "You are troubled about the plant
for which you did not labor and did not grow.
It came up in a night and perished in a night.
11 Should I not, therefore, be concerned about Nineveh,
that great city, in which there are
more than a hundred and twenty thousand people,
who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many animals?"
[1] But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
[2] And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this
my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto
Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to
anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
1Ch 13:1-14; 15:25-16:3
9 (Ps 119:120) David feared the Lord that day, and he thought,
"How can the ark of the Lord come to me?"
10 (1Ch 26:4-8) So David did not allow the ark of the Lord
to be brought to him in the City of David. Instead,
David redirected it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.
11 (Ge 30:27; 39:5) The ark of the Lord remained at the house of Obed-Edom
the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-Edom
and his entire household.
2 Samuel 6
[9] And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and said, How shall the ark
of the LORD come to me?
[10] So David would not remove the ark of the LORD unto him into the city of
David: but David carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
[11] And the ark of the LORD continued in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite
three months: and the LORD blessed Obed-edom, and all his household.

12 (1Ki 8:1) When it was reported to King David,

Obed-edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So
David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into
the city of David with gladness
[13] And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the LORD had gone
six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings.
[14] And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was
girded with a linen ephod.
[15] So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD
with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.
Zoologists describe what they call "turtle dancing" - the charming behaviour
of loggerhead turtles when they are in the presence of food. The turtles
tilt their bodies vertically, open their mouths, clap their front flippers,
and spin around in the water. But research has shown that radio-wave
interference can disrupt the turtle's internal "GPS." It confuses their
navigation, distracts them from their food source, and, sadly,
stops their dancing.
The Bible tells of a time when David danced. The ark of the covenant
conveyed the very presence of God. At a certain time, the ark was brought to
Jerusalem and "David was dancing before the Lord with all his might"
(2 Samuel 6:14). But years later, the king became distracted. He sinned with
Bathsheba, sending her husband to death in war (11:4, 14-15). Now the child
he'd borne with her was dying. In remorse and anguish, David
"fasted and spent the nights lying in sackcloth on the ground" (12:16).
Like David, we thrive in the presence of God, but our sin distracts us from
Him, and we stop "dancing." How can we find our joy again? By turning from the
sin that confuses our connection to God. When we repent, we find hope in Him.
David himself writes of God's mercy: "You turned my wailing into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy" (Psalm 30:11).
God, after all, is the true Lord of the dance.
Reflect & Pray
When have you "danced" for God? What has led you away from that?
Dear God, I've gone so long in this dark time.
There is no joy. Please help me to dance again.

"Dad, can I ask you something?" Jimmy leaned across the back of his
father's chair. His father lowered the newspaper and reached around,
settling Jimmy on his lap.
"Sure. Son," he answered. "You can ask me anything you want. The answer
might not be Yes, but you always have the right to ask."
For many who have grown up in homes where the father was absent, or when
present, abusive or silent, the scenario of Jimmy and his father may
seem unrealistic. Often we aren't given the right by our parents to ask
what we want, to communicate openly, to express our needs and desires.
But god clearly indicates that no matter what our human families have been
like, in his family there are no barriers to belonging,
to open communications. When we commit our lives to Christ and submit to his
lordship, we have the right to become the sons and daughters of God.
In Christ, we have the right to approach him, to pray, to seek wisdom,
to ask advice, to make requests, to verbalise our needs and desires. We don't
have to be afraid of sounding stupid or being rejected, because in Christ
we belong to him, and he loves us.
The KJV uses the word "power" in verse 12 - "to them gave he power to become
the sons of God." Power implies ability, that we are equipped by the Spirit
to be children of the King. We have the right and we have the power to become
who God has called us to be - his children.
Application
a) Under what circumstances in my life have I felt that I didn't
have the right to express my wishes or feelings?
b) How do today's verses give me confidence in approaching God?

Jonah 1
The Call of Jonah
1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying,
2 "Get up, go to Nineveh, the great city, and cry out against it,
because their wickedness has come up before Me."
3 But Jonah got up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.
He went down to Joppa and found there a ship going to Tarshish.
He paid its fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish
from the presence of the Lord.
4 But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and a mighty storm
came upon the sea, so that the ship was in danger of breaking up.
5 Then the sailors were afraid, and each cried to his god.
They tossed the ship's cargo into the sea in order to lighten the load.
But Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship, had lain down,
and was fast asleep.
6 The captain came to him and said, "What are you doing asleep?
Get up, call to your god! Perhaps your god will consider us,
so that we will not perish."
7 The sailors said to one another, "Come, let us cast lots
that we may know on whose account this disaster has come upon us."
So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
8 Then the sailors said to Jonah, "Tell us why this disaster has come
upon us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from?
What is your country? And from what people are you?"
9 Jonah replied, "I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord,
the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land."
10 Then the men were very afraid and said to him,
"What is this you have done?" For the men knew that he was fleeing
from the presence of the Lord because he had told them.
11 Then they said to Jonah, "What shall we do to you, so that the sea
may quiet down for us?" For the sea was growing stormier.
12 So Jonah said to them,"Pick me up and toss me into the sea.
Then the sea will quiet down for you. For I know that it is
on my account this great storm has come upon you."
13 Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to bring the ship to land,
but they could not do it, for the sea grew more tempestuous against them.
14 Then they cried to the Lord and said, "Please, Lord, do not let us perish
for this man's life, and do not make us guilty for innocent blood,
for You, Lord, have done as it pleased You."
15 So they picked up Jonah and tossed him into the sea.
Then the sea ceased from its raging.
16 Therefore the men were very afraid of the Lord,
and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.

Jonah 2
1 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish.
2 He said:
"I called to the Lord out of my distress,
and He answered me.
Out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
and You heard my voice.
3 You cast me into the deep,
into the heart of the seas,
and the flood surrounded me.
All Your billows and Your waves
passed over me.
4 Then I said, 'I am cast away
from Your sight;
yet I will look again
to Your holy temple.'
5 The waters encompassed me; even to my soul
the deep surrounded me;
weeds were wrapped around my head.
6 I went down to the foundations of the mountains;

Jonah 3
Jonah Preaches at Nineveh
1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying,
2 "Get up, go to Nineveh, the great city,
and proclaim to it the message that I tell you."
3 So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord.
Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three-day journey across.
4 Jonah began to enter the city, going a day's walk.
And he cried out, "In forty days' time, Nineveh will be overthrown!"
5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast.
And everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.
6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne,
removed his robe, covered himself in sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7 Then he made a proclamation in Nineveh:
"By decree of the king and his nobles:
No man or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything.
They shall not eat or drink water.
8 Both man and animals shall cover themselves with sackcloth
and cry mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways
and from the violence that is in their hands.
9 Who knows? God may relent and change His mind.
He may turn from His fierce anger, so that we will not perish."
10 When God saw their actions, that they turned from their evil ways,
He changed His mind about the disaster that He had said He would bring
upon them, and He did not do it.
[1] And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
[2] Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the
preaching that I bid thee.
[3] So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the
LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.
[4] And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried,
and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
[5] So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and
put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
[6] For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne,
and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in
ashes.
[7] And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the
decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd
nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
[8] But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto
God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence
that is in their hands.
[9] Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce
anger, that we perish not?
