How Union Representation Works
The Operating Engineers, Local 955 is
your voice in determining your wages, benefits and working
conditions. The Union negotiates your contract with
management. To do this effectively, the Union gathers information
necessary for successful negotiations.
The Union asks its members what issues they want discussed at the bargaining table. Union members form a key part of the negotiating committee. Proposed agreements are always taken to the membership for ratification. The Operating Engineers, Local 955 means job protection. Negotiating a good contract is only the beginning. The Union employs professional Business Representatives to enforce the contract and represent its' members if they are having problems with the Employer.
LIVE BETTER....WORK UNION |
Make YOUR Workplace A Union Workplace
It is your legal right to support, form,
and / or advocate a Union at your workplace. You do not need your
Employer's permission to become Unionized. Remember, it's the
Employees that belong to the Union.... not the Employer.
In order for the Union to be recognized for Collective Bargaining, you must demonstrate to the Alberta Labour Relations Board that a majority of the Employees wish to be represented by the Union. This is accomplished by first signing a petition, or a Union Organizing Card, which is followed by a secret ballot vote, resulting in a 50% (plus one vote) outcome. A successful vote will result in the Alberta Labour Relations Board certifying the Union as the official Bargaining Agent for the Employees. Every Union company was non-union at one time, until the workers joined together and changed things for themselves by Organizing with a Union.
Organizing is a numbers game... If you don't have the numbers, you don't have the POWER! |
So joining a Union makes real sense for the unorganized worker. With prices rising every year, working people need a Union and a collective agreement to protect their living standards. Workers need their own organization to promote and advance their interests for the same reasons that business people, doctors, lawyers, engineers, contractors and others form associations to promote their interests. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain, so why
not check it out today.

After I Join Can I Work Elsewhere? In the construction industry it works like this, if you are laid
off, just register for employment at the Union office. When Union
employers need additional workers they call the Union Dispatcher who in
turn dispatches the required workers to the Employer.
We understand that members sometimes have to work for non-union contractors. We ask the members to let us know which non-union contractors that they are working with. The union may need your assistance while conducting an organizing drive. Remember its you in the union that makes a union strong.
